A lack of diversity in music tastes
I noticed that a lot of people like almost exactly the same music: Radiohead, Animal Collective, The Beatles, Joy Division, The Smiths, Belle & Sebastian, Bob Dylan, Sigur Ros, Modest Mouse, Interpol, The National, The Cure, R.E.M., (sometimes) Kanye West and few others (usually Pitchfork approved artists). Almost EXACTLY the same artists on Top Artists over and over, like they have the same brain with exactly the same taste.
I wonder why that happens when you consider that:
1. tons of music are released every year
2. there's a lot of great but quite underground music
3. everyone has a different brain.
Where's the originality?

Mummy Says I'm Special
The Idiot Boy
Saddam Hussein
IMPORTANT: haters, out!
Pretty much all of those acts are masters of their respective genres
So that's probably why lots of people like them all. Cheers.
OK. But why these persons listen a lot to ALMOST ALL those quite different artists?
Why all of them? They really like all these artists of they listen to them just because P4K told them?
It's not like it's the same music for all these artists.
I don't understand why it troubles you really
I just wondered why everyone have the same taste in this age of music diversity...
Let's say that I'm an external observer.
loads of people aren't REALLY as passionate about music as they make out
they're also lazy and need validation
Everyone doesn't have the same taste though
You've created the most specific musical stereotype ever :D
Replace 'Everyone' with 'a lot of people'
This is what I actually meant.
Maybe the people you're referring to are those who are just discovering alternative indie music?
P4K was basically my bible when I was getting into that sort of stuff, until I gradually realised it was a bit shit and started scouting out new music on my own.
ah ha!
people like to feel a sense of community,to feel as though they are part of something, and with "indie" you get a vague sense of intelligense which appeals to some people.
and yet it's pretty funny
that most of the people putting forward ideas like this in this thread are the ones who go to great pains to espouse on here how they either don't like "indie" or listen to a wide variety of music :')
and then there are the people who like Garbage.
Garbage are excellent
And yes, I'm original. Unlike the herd...
:D
Most people can't be bothered to delve deep to find stuff.
They will be aware of the new Coldplay album because it will be promoted everywhere. They won't be aware of the new Pastels album because it will be promoted in low key (ie low cost) places.
no. i reckon the point the op is trying to make, they'd still listen to the pastels are theyre comfortably in the listeners comfort zone
i get the point. people just like indie and music from other genres approved by certain critics.
this is worded terribly
it's not about mainstream promotion. it's about websites like pitchfork (less so DiS or the NME) validating something so it's socially acceptable in indie circles to listen to it
WAKE UP, SHEEPLE
http://xkcd.com/1013/
those are all really good bands
Debatable
fair point, The Smiths are rubbish
I didn't say they're bad
Most of them are great, well-known, established acts. I enjoy the music of some of them, but I'm not a fan (except The Cure).
Hang on
In that other thread you're saying that your don't know why people don't just listen to their favourite music, but here you're saying you don't know why people don't listen to music outside their established favourites. You're not being very consistent.
Hang on
"In that other thread you're saying that your don't know why people don't just listen to their favourite music, but here you're saying you don't know why people don't listen to music outside their established favourites".
I'm asking why the favourites' list is so narrow. Why many people like the same artists over and over. Where's the diversity?
"You're not being very consistent".
I disagree.
there's no diversity in consensus
that is what consensus is designed to arbitrate
Most people don't care or have a desire to dig really deep.
Fair enough to them. Doesn't mean they like music any less or are any lesser of a human. It's just not something they want to spend their time and energy on.
cause people are boring
indie is the boringest genre there is
lol
i'm sorry but it does nothing for me
it's just for teenagers and people who wish they were one
:DDDDDDDDDDDD
impart your wisdom
oh wise one, what should grown ups listen to?
justin beiber
I have been thinking something like this/the opposite of this simultaneously
Like, if you look at last year's end of year lists, they are somewhat 'diverse', in that they are genre spanning, but at the same time they are nearly all really similar to each other.
So,given points 1, 2 and 3 on your list, it surprises me that everyone is basically in agreement that Swans and Frank Ocean made the two best albums of 2012.
If you look at the top 10/20/9000/whatever lists of people that actually make music (I don't mean like we all do, I mean like for a living, touring different countries and shit) there is almost no overlap at all, let alone consensus. Clearly the people who dedicate their lives to music to the extent that they spend more time in van than with their families love music. However, if you're a 'music lover' outside of being actually creative it seems that all of a sudden there are a list of objective 'best' albums that you either like or "don't understand", a criticism that would never be levelled at, say, Bradford Cox, even though his entire creative output is very much along the same lines.
tl;dr: there is a sort of pressure on 'music lovers' (i.e. critics and internet nerds) to demonstrate a love of a kind of agreed-upon diversity that then becomes generic.
Good points
"So,given points 1, 2 and 3 on your list, it surprises me that everyone is basically in agreement that Swans and Frank Ocean made the two best albums of 2012."
This too. How the hell everyone agreed that those are the albums of the year? Everyone have the same brain and I don't know? It's a conspiracy? (jk)
end of year lists are usually the result of compromise
they end up becoming the list of albums that those involved in compiling them have all heard
If we were REALLY diverse
we would listen to music from every country/continent on top of whatever Cementimental listens to.
AND
if we were REALLY diverse we wouldn't want, need or listen to pitchfork telling us what subgenre of music outside of indie it's alright to pretend to like this month
yay, the "pretending to like things" train is here again

possibly a good band name?
Belle and Sebastian cover band?
Not a lot of coin to be made in that though.
To the hater busy adding crappy tags to this topic
Read the first comment. Now.
DiS forum rules #1 and #2
#1 Dont use the word 'hater'
#2 Never get mad about artist tagging
Ha, I missed those rules
i think quite often people mistake an "indie" fan for being some creative obsessive with incredible taste who searches out all this new music,in reality the vast majority are no different to people who listen to the charts or buy all there music in tesco.its all fairly predictable.ties in with what i said about people wanting to be part of a community.music is very rarely just about the music
who even listens to indie any more?

This thread
needs more logic and math.
Actually, can we just have a whole 'logic and math' forum, where Deep-Blue analyses lastfm charts and tells us all what we should/shouldn't be doing?
And also makes fun of user names. That was my favourite part.
Good. I'll be the judge.
what an odd, random assortment of bands to list
and then announce as a definitive guide of the only bands people like.
No idea where you are getting this from, seems more like you wrongly imagine yourself have more varied taste in music than others, and are trying to make that point somehow.

Marketing, Advertising and Audience Targeting.
They are you answers.
Tesc O)))
Don't blame the people for having the same thoughts and tastes - you only notice them together because these industries have rounded this certain demographic into a nice penned in community.
It has very little to do with what a band or artist sound like and everything to do with market-place positioning for the band and the magazines you are reading about them in. Don't get frustrated, just admit you are a member of this group of people. Be relieved that the world is not as homogenised as you think and about 99.9% of the world are not interested in a poxy music mags end of year list.
Your view of who these people that should have different tastes is is extremely narrow.
If you want to talk to the people with a different top 10 to Pitchfork readers, don't hang around the corner of the internet where that musical culture prevails.
What I want to know is - Y U MAINSTREAM GIVE UP ON BLACK METAL WHEN ITZ GETTING GUD AGAIN?

Now that's a funny name. :)
good band

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9Ff8qvCP8A
plus it was really funny that time when the singer called all those other lo-fi bands
(apart from times new viking) a load of shit
great band, might just talk to myself about psychedelic horseshit a bit
I thought he was a little unfair on No Age though
everyone likes No Age. seemed particularly strange when they have so much in common. still, it was funny
fuck wavves though, I heartily agree with that
daddy those men scare me
Give me strength
Sorry to anyone I disagreed with when they said: 'the music board ain't what it used to be'.
Funny you should say that
because I swear we had this thread pretty much weekly circa 2007
Really?
I'd argue these threads have bought about the most interesting discussion the music board has had in quite a while.
The other one did
This is garbage though. I'm surprised people are treating it seriously.
o.O DONT TALK ABOUT GARBAGE
lol
if anyone has actually ever said that, it's probably due to the fucking 'TYPE RAGING SPEEDHORN LYRICS IN CAPITALS' threads and the 'pick a band, change a letter/word threads which, last time I checked, were the fodder of late night local radio phone in shows.
this guy going mental and spaffing out bonkers theories about musical diveristy, and getting people riled... more please.
Hmmm.
I wonder similar things sometimes. But the answeris already said above^ when you poll for the consensus that's what you are going to get - no diversity, because more people will
pick the same thing than doesn't. If you know what I mean.
It's no big thought - it's just what is popular. Popular music is successful in
many ways. There are hundreds of banda and albums that will never make theae lists, and I imagine it doesn't trouble them that much. That's why music is so fucking amazing - it is diverse; I don't need the consensus to be.
It's funny because even if there was a point here, it's being
put forward by someone whose every opinion comes straight from the pages of Rolling Stone.
And also http://i.imgur.com/9Qxts.jpg
<3
does anybody want to talk about music
I like the new Funeral for a Friend record.
I haven't heard the new Funeral For A Friend record. Is it as good as Sigur Ros and The National's recent efforts?
Someone on my facebook was complaining that she had to go to a Funeral For A Friend gig.
local natives are gööd
Good, and swedish?
Yeah, ok
So do you prefer Belle & Sebastian or Modest Mouse?
There are likes, damn likes, and statistics
Modest Mouse tracks on my ipod: 9
Belle & Seba tracks on my ipod: 0
Is that a West Wing reference I see?
because statistics
what you've asked is a question about maths: it has nothing to do with music.
the exact same question could be asked about clothes. or groceries. or websites. or cars. or pets. or porn. or DiS user's mothers.
Don't mention maths around deep-blue
Have you not seen that other thread?
A correct rating ?
Been avoiding it all day, tbh. Just waded through it. <3 deep-blue. chupacabras was just the taster course.
Surely those bands are all quite popular
and therefore will be the bands that a lot of people will have in common in among all the idiosyncrasies? No? Oh ok.
Garbage are shite.
I found him!
You're the perfect example of my first post. Your taste in music is boring like HELL. You're serious, dammit. You don't need to listen to mainstream rock, pop or electronic music or something less pretentious.
Of course. Garbage is shite for a mega-pretentious hipster like you. You probably listened to one of their songs 10 years ago and you have an expert opinion about all their music... Anything too catchy or enjoyable is not allowed for you. It would ruin your reputation.
EXACTLY the bands mentioned by me in my first post (except K.West) are in your profile: http://www.last.fm/user/cathalmcb/charts?rangetype=overall&subtype=artists
Radiohead? check
Animal Collective? check
The Beatles? check
Joy Division? check
The Smiths? check
Belle & Sebastian? check
Bob Dylan? check
Sigur Ros? check
Modest Mouse? check
Interpol? check
The National? check
The Cure? check
R.E.M.? check
What do you want more?
For me, the opinion of a hipster about music is shite. I don't give a rotten onion for that opinion...
haters out, plz
but your own taste in music is very generic
so what is your point here?
I actually don't understand whats wrong with liking music that other people like
explain
So, having posted a list of bands that are popular on here, you attracted replies from 30-40 people and
have found that *one* of that group listens to all the bands in your list? And based on that, that one person is obviously some sort of crowd-follower whose real opinions are obviously non-existent?
Run for the fucking hills, Turing, there's a new king logician in town.
:D
Let's be fair...
there are 329 different artists between Radiohead and The Cure on his last.fm list. He has scrobbled 16 listens of The Cure and I would be surprised if he classed them among his 'Top Artists'.
As many others have said: the artists you have listed are popular, which means many people enjoy listening to them, therefore they are more widely discussed on DiS. Very few will listen to those artists exclusively. Most people will enjoy the music of less well known artists in addition to those that you have listed. However, there are fewer and less popular threads/comments about these artists because they are not as well known.
It is inevitable that trends of this sort will emerge within a culture. Very few people are immune to the way that these trends act upon their taste and the most popular trends naturally become more noticeable. Your tenuous grasp on this subject matter is worrying.
I don't really like The Cure.
According to my last.fm I've only listened to 3 different songs by them
and they are level with David Gray :DDD
Hang on
The number is 328 different artists between Radiohead & The Cure
:DDDD OH MY GOD WHAT IS HAPPENING :DDDD
I'm sort of confused as to whether you're making fun of my taste for being too generic
or not generic enough. You're listing The Beatles and REM while calling me a mega-pretentious hipster. I don't really understand.
You're serious, dammit!
I love how you've been singled out here,.
My dad likes the Beatles, does that make him a mega-pretentious hipster?
Baring in mind that he rang me the other day to tell me that he's going to a model railway exhibition next weekend.
That sounds incredibly hipster tbf
a rotten onion?
Is this the Russian troll? Or an eastern european cousin?
Either way, fair play.
I don't mind liking the same music as lots of other people
not something that keeps me up at night deep blue

remember when you could read some threads on the music board and most of the people talking would be smart and/or informed

It was good.
so sad
I would say that
someone who genuinely enjoys Kanye West, The Smiths, Sigur Ros AND Bob Dylan has pretty diverse tastes.
Nice.
I finally feel justified in my musical tastes. Most opera still leaves me cold, mind...
My Last.FM Top 10:
Flying Lotus
Los Campesinos!
The xx
Iron & Wine
Mercury Rev
Neutral Milk Hotel
Belle and Sebastian
HEALTH
Animal Collective
Modest Mouse
Though those are popular bands, those are incredibly DIFFERENT bands. I don't think listening to bands that are popular with a specific group of people makes those bands unoriginal, or not diverse. Loads of people like Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath and The Beatles, but those are three incredibly different bands.
I think I'm just missing the point. Is it a bad thing that people here really like all of those dissimilar bands?
not as much of a multifarious freak as I thought I was
perhaps.
top 10 overall last.fms:
Washed Out
Wild Nothing
Peaking Lights
Mogwai
Thee Oh Sees
Twin Shadow
Ssaliva
Turbowolf
Oneida
The Soft Moon
Mogwai and Oneida are two of my all time favourite bands, and both to various people to various degrees, difficult to listen to.
This isn't really adding anything - but I think it concurs with thistemporarylife's list in that there's a range of sounds in my regular listening. Not much though really.
anyway, 1 more post towards 150, right d_b?
My top 15
1 Elliott Smith 856
2 The Shins 815
3 PJ Harvey 794
4 Metric 691
5 The Stills 552

12 Cut Copy 419
13 The Kills 393
14 David Bowie 380
15 The Magnetic Fields 374
Odd that some acts that I know have listened to a lot aren't on here and I realise some of it is standard DiS fare but I thought it was an interesting counter to this hive mind concept.
Nobody ever liked what I liked throughout my "musical" life
And I don't care. Well, I DID, but learned that it's all relative. For instance, out of those acts you listed, I think all but about 3 of those are crap. So what? And most people I know like maybe one (guess which one?) from that list. And THEY don't like what I like, either. Ipods keep it real for me, I live in my own world of music.
Me; The National, Finchy; The National...
Gareth; The National, sometimes Arcade Fire. So different bands for different...needs.

1. Buke & Gase

6. TV On The Radio
7. Lotte Kestner
8. Bilal
9. The Embassy
10. Yelle
I can't wait to see the results, I would like a break down of the results as well please.
Your weekly top 10 is unimportant
It's all about whether 13 of a list of 14 particular artists appear in your overall top 330.
Moronic OP
deep-blue: quite adversarial in the old debate
that said i kinda agree a bit, not about your people just listening to stuff but i always find it surprising that there's so much consensus about album of the year across the big blogs. i don't understand why you'd run a website and cover all the same stuff that pitchfork covers. maybe they don't week to week, idk don't really read any of them except to glance over the end of year stuff.
A small quibble:
Why do people use "Pitchfork reader" pejoratively? I read Pitchfork, I know a lot of people who do... I think it's really only a problem if it's ALL you read. Just like if you ONLY go to Stereogum, or The Quietus, or FACTmag, or even jolly ol' DiS.
What is it about Pitchfork that inspires so much ire?
biggest and baddest and most influential
I woulda pegged Rolling Stone for those three.
Maybe 10 years ago.
Pitchfork is def the new rolling stone, not necessarily in content, but in their influence
because there are a lot of insecure people who view music not just as a checklist but also some kind of pissing contest
"oh, you like The National? I only listen to autotuned bee farts and Frank Ocean nyaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"
Would totally be interested in hearing auto-tuned bee farts.
Auto-tuned bee farts

IMO, this is a BAD thing (subject: deep-blue not posting anymore)
Sure, avoiding concepts like logic or thought is never going to end well but it brought an element of debate and entertainment to the boards.
What we going to do, all sit round and agree on everything?
Or worse, why do some people feel the need to be horrible to others just cos they're on an internet forum?
