music's best screams
here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMbAPx_m6Mo
this one in particular scours my soul. the quiet man, the gentle one, tearing at the seams of his vocal tract.
it's very primal scream, a controlled exorcism, a caustic vent from depths of unutterable sadness. relatable. the kind of scream I would like to do.
people who don't like screaming fuck off fuck off fuck off (sorry).
don't be lazy, label your links and say something. these things do not just speak for themselves. explain your screaming picks.

Jay-Z
standard 'Good Morning, Captain' link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcYFlYFCCRI
whatever Brian was channeling here, he left it all out there on the tape. he must have been spent after, emotionally at least. I'd like to think, anyway.
it was like real hardcore's last scream, kind of. before Kurt was kicked into the spotlight, dragging what was left out with him, sending everyone else scattering in slants.
he was physically sick
I probably knew that.
proper screaming, real vomit.
Ironically you didn't label your link
oh fuck
Opera Mini closed on me, I had to rewrite from memory and forgot that bit.
Still not written it though
riot grrrl came after so I guess those weren't the *last* screams
of proper hardcore. not that schooled in it, though.
cLOUDDEAD - And All You Can Do Is Laugh. (1)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tITTPtlGe3E
I always forget it's there and it never fails to terrify me.

basically, we can be just as scary as foxes or barn owls.
The Cure - Subway Song

Devin Townsend has the best clean-to-scream-to-growl
He basically covers it all here between 9:00-11:00
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CG126BydKHI
Blixa Bargeld
Came here to post this.
'Armenia' is a force of nature. The Cave man still uses a sample of his scream in live performances of Stagger Lee, too.
I wish I knew more off the hook funk or classic rock shrieks/howls
or more esoteric screams, not just painful/despairing ones.
nm.
two Animal Collective ones, anyway.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvnGlY41cmE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7ytPNb75Ho
first one is a scream of someone whose youth is slipping away, always. at least I figure.
second is that guy in a more manic, trting to live but feeling frayed-edge existential.
maybe some metal ones next.
James Brown
This is probably the best one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDwOFThiNnA
Mike Patton
Is my favourite screamer. For example:

Kim Deal is shrugging.
Futureheads - Man Ray
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jjFM1be95A
Tool - The Grudge
(Unsurprising answer from me!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiR1hmpk-x4
From about 6:58 for a full 30 seconds. A Primal Scream like no other.
Maynard is the Master of the scream
(i agree with you,
just can't really be admitting to be a tool fan where people can see, you know?)
I am out and proud to be a TOOL fan!!!
more power to ya
Chino Mereno especially when he goes from whispering to screaming in an instant
Good shout on Bargeld. I thought it was a drill noise on Halber Mensch until I saw them live.
Pink Floyd - careful with that axe, eugene
pixies
any
There's a lot of screaming in Pixies' music
But I don't find it annoying.
Daryl Palumbo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rApjUsW04o
Great track
though I always thought his most affecting vocals were at the end of Eveything You Ever Wanted To Know..., when you can hear him choking in the vocal booth
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3W0F1yeuLZU
THIS IS WHAT'S LIKE TO BE ALONE
Genuinely the most amount of goosebumps ever.
Also, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxTDgJokVMo

Conor for the last bit of "Road To Joy"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18S8D8kHFlE
He gets two really great screams in on that track.
When I saw Bright Eyes at Somerset House
Conor screamed so much he threw up. Amazing gig.
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Skunk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=me09HjhMU2I
Lord Only Knows - Beck
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pizJl6ikfOY
I love the randomness of the intro's quick scream which completely contrasts to the rest of the track's pleasant alt country vibe.
Come to Daddy - Aphex Twin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6Jpdl6HZ-4
The middle section's distorted scream from 2:37 just takes the tune to even more freakish territory.
The scream in Lord Only Knows is so random, I totally forgot it even existed.
Obligatory Converge post...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89STRv9_0Ys
was gonna post this
could be here all day with converge
is it cheating to put in singers who almost always scream?
Can't have a thread called 'music's best screams'
and not expect to see some Jane Doe in there.
This is probably cheating though as it's not even a song, but contains the coolest scream ever:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6r0sENgc5Q
harvey milk - one of uss cannot be wrong
more wailing or howling than screaming but it'll do

half japanese - ball and chain

State Faults
You can hear his throat being ripped up. I haven't a clue how they pull this off live. The whole album's like this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlQssuNaqIY
I know someone also said Chino, but I specifically love Hexagram...
Two great screams in this - www.youtube.com/watch?v=yP4dFHSd-iw
great sneezes too
shit, now I can't un-hear that...
my b
A Dillinger Escape Plan one...
"Farewell, Mona Lisa" - about 2:50 in, the initial screaming has subsided but then the relative calm is shattered by one THE most demonic sounding screams I've heard which just continues to get more and more deranged as the song progresses. In other words, amazing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YY-JkeXK4dU
Too many effects on that one for me
Dimitri's screams hit way harder. So raw.
the chariot
particularly david de la hoz and andy sundwell
or gay for johnny depp - nothing worse than a whining boy
proper sounds like a pained dog
The Birthday Party
Pretty much most of Junkyard, particularly *that* bit in The Dim Locator
Taylor Swift wins
http://youtu.be/HLI4EuDckgM?t=10s
Julie Christmas- Battle Of Mice
Especially this towards the end of Cave Of Spleen (please excuse the pretty poor audio quality):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSIxoWVHnFs
She does that cute-ish whisper through to full throated roar thing but it all sounds so genuinely creepy and affecting, like a genuine exorcism of some pretty heavy shit, especially in tandem with the properly chilling lyrics. I get a genuine physical reaction every time from the holler around the 3:10 mark, and again all through the ending, particularly around the 6 minute mark. To be fair the whole song is wrenching though.
some good choices here
may think of more later but the first to come to mind is Portishead - Half Day Closing
Radiohead-Climbing Up The Walls
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbtZyuOMdHI
Is the first that comes to mind.
That one scream at the end may well be Thom Yorke's finest vocal moment.
Audioslave - Cochise
Is that a scream? Maybe more of a growl, still enjoyable though.
Best enjoyed while watching the stadium rock video, with it's silly posturing and fireworks.
Think there's a helicopter too, although it's a long time since I've seen it.
Sorry, no youtube link.
you don't have to apologise
At about 2:40 of this live performance of Closer
He makes it sound like digital manipulation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEdqqyxoWuA
Flower Travellin' Band - Satori I
immediately springs to mind:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5mMLbF3ts4 (intro)
Ctrl + F 'Knife Party'
eh?
It makes me shiver, makes my toes curl. It is everything I want from music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAP0w51Yjig
oh yeah!
I mean, obviously.
I thought for a while that it was Chino and he had some freaky androgynous vocal prowess.
Eddie Vedder

Nick Oliveri too:

no one has linked a better scream than the ones between 1:15 and 2:15 here, especially at 2:11. always gives me goosebumps
Has nobody mentioned McCartney?
He's got an excellent scream, whips it out on many of the early Beatles classics.
And Lennon is no slouch on the Plastic Ono Band album.
Chris Cornell's voice back in the early days of Soundgarden:
The opening note of Loud Love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0xosEFe8Ik
And obviously, Jesus Christ Pose: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14r7y6rM6zA
