Flaming Lips - The Terror
has there been a thread on this yet?
I'd basically lost interest after most of the garbage they put out last year, but this is unexpectedly brilliant. Really bleak as well.
Fav track at the moment is 'try to explain', and I get the feeling that this is only going to get better with more listens.

The Flaming Lips
GODDAMNIT
I have a fucking podcast to edit, I don't have time to listen to this :(
Are we listening to this...
... via a 'safe for work' source?
High-ish hopes for this album
as everything they've released since Yoshimi has been patchy/dull/self-indulgent or a combination of. I mean, I respect them for trying different things but it's been over a decade since they put out something genuinely amazing.
Oh, and read in MOJO that Wayne's broken up with his missus and been dabbling in substances. Feel sorry for the guy (but hopefully this will make the music better, like when the drummer was a smackhead).
I reckon War with the Mystics was a fairly accessible, carefree album
though half of it was indeed 'dull'. The odd album track off it comes on rotation at work on the company installed hard drive.
The drummer?
You mean the multi-instrumentalist musical genius in the band?
I've been kind of put off
by all the arsing about they've done over the last few years
while the idea of a band free to explore whatever comes to them is appealling I really can't be fucked with some of the shit that it results in
I would like it to be good
thought i'm not sure i'm holding out a lot of hope
I'm guessing there's no thread because it is still a few weeks from release
I would have started one myself as I've had it on constant rotation, but it still hasn't sunk in properly. Nevertheless, some thoughts:
It's funny how, like The Soft Bulletin before, Embryonic has already embodied the style they are going for right now; both Heady Fwends and this mainatin(ed) the heavy/fuzzy psyche vibe from that album. So naturally if you hated that style, this won't be for you, but there are also a few reasons why The Terror is an improvement on Embryonic. Rather than constantly-shifting jammy structure of Embryonic, the songs on The Terror are based upon and built upon single motifs, so it holds together much better. It is also a much more manageable length.
The comnparative viewpoint is a bit reductive though. In reality, it is becoming clear that this is a truly exceptiuonal album. It is strangely melancholy and harrowing, a dimension they have only touched upon in previous releases. Try to Explain really is a highlight, especially when it all reduces to the mechanical hum and Wayne's sighing. It reminds me of Amnesiac. I'd also say the last three songs are a strong point, things get decidely ominous on Turning Violent.
I could write all day on it, tbh. It is really quite stark and glaring, much like the cover, I'd say.
really love this
didnt expect the new flips to sound like this but its a pretty astonishing listen overall.
'you lust' was the standout track for me with that really creepy vocal sample. the last 3 are pretty magnificent too.
i read that their next tour is gonna do away with all the confetti and stuff. really pissed i missed out on tickets to their roundhouse shows, sounds like theyd be seriously impressive/scary.
found it a slog....
and love the flaming lips.
I listened to the first half, up past "You Lust"
I had to go to bed, or else I woulda finished.
I think it's tremendous. I really enjoyed Embryonic a lot. I think that fuzzed-out psych sound that they're going for now really works well for them.
For me the second half is even better
So you've got it all to come.
TBH had written them off of late
Will definately give it a go
Can't wait to hear the album properly.
The rip I have sounds like someone chucked a blanket over my speakers. April 2nd can't come soon enough.
Ok this is really good
At the risk of not being cool
I have to say this is a terrible record
Let's have a full on barney then
Terrible eh? Are you a fan of their previous stuff? Just what to know what you are comparing it to hear to use the word "terrible". And I'd say you run the risk of not being cool if you say you like something, on DiS at least.
I've deleted it on the grounds that....
I now know it's excellent and it'll be nice to pick up when it comes out. Don't understand at all how it's terrible. It really comes to life on decent speakers too.
Well, i have all their records from Soft Bulletin to Embryonic
and i enjoy them a lot, but this one (as someone has mention before) sounds like that really obtuse track on the last Of Montreal record. Is like Embryonic with longer songs and less tunes, at least thats my opinion after three listens.
That track is Exorcism Breeding Knife, yeah?
I mean that was really obtuse to the point of being unlistenable. I don't get that feeling for any of the tracks here, I'd say theyre no more difficult than Convinced of the Hex. There ARE less tunes than Embryonic, but I see the change as a positive one, as they've really taken care of the emotional impact. I like that many songs repeat one motif as well, it's like watching something grow slowly.
Overall it must be disappointing to be a modern Lips fan then to find this terrible.
Fair enough, I guess this new direction doesn't appeal to me
Still i can take my fair share or 'difficult records' but i found that this one is very dark and claustrophobic, without the will to let you in.
It's still a month away from release right?
Is the quality of the leaked version really bad?
192 Kbps
Which is classed as bad, yeah. I mean it'll be discernibly better on release, but it's good enough for me to know I like it.
Same.
I can tell it's a good album (not their best but very enjoyable) but I want to hear it when it's released. Very excited about this.
192 isn't bad.
It's past the point where the human ear can hear compression, unlike 160 or lower. 192 is the sweet spot for mp3 ripping in general if VBR isn't an option.
Not a fan of Embrionic
Directionless and vague, far too self indulgent, can never remember a single damn song off it.
I thought Heady Fwends was a step in the right direction but still felt hollow compared to Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi and to a lesser extent, half of Mystics. And obviously still missing the batshit old magic from the pre-Bulletin days. It felt like a side-step of sorts.
How am I going to find The Terror?
It is more focused than Embryonic and Heady Fwends
Now I'm a fan of all three but from your pointers you'll probably prefer this. They haven't had this cohesion since Yoshimi but also, it is neither as mad as their early stuff nor as kaleidoscopic as The Soft Bulletin. Whether you really like depends on if you like the quite heavy/melancholic style of the record (I love it).
I loved Embryonic.
The best thing they made since The Soft Bulletin and it's definitely in my top five favourite albums of theirs'. The Terror isn't as good but I'd say it's close.
NME in insightful and worthwhile interview shocker

Given this a fair few listens now
I'm really loving it, it's got an amazing dark, dirty psychedelic feel to it. Probably my favourite of theirs in a good few albums (though Embryonic is great too).
