Anyone go to either/both the Mark Gardener/Robin Guthrie gig or The History Of Apple Pie gig around Old Street earlier?

I saw Mark Gardener as a support act as I'm a big Ride fan I then scurried off to a hugely packed Old Blue Last for The History Of Apple Pie gig. Bloody hell; very very packed but Apple Pie were great. Any Dis-ers go to any of these?

  • history of apple pie too.

bought the album at the end. bit unsure of the support acts. many people at Cargo?

  • The Cargo was ok. For some reason they had a merchandise

desk right next to the arched entrance inside the venue. I guess people didn't know the venue well as the arched entrance was packed but it was very empty near the back where I was. Gardener was good but I'm glad I legged it for Apple Pie. A packed venue (Old Blue Last) but what do you expect for a freebie when you have an excellent album out. Two great sets. A very good night out.

  • went to thoap the weekend gone

on their penultimate show on the tour
& doing mark gardener/ robin guthrie trio this weekend

so not the same shows, but the same tour

  • Mark Gardener played almost all new songs. The only Ride

song was an acoustic version of Vapour Trail; brilliantly performed despite a lot of idiots talking loudly. I missed his last song as I had to get to The Old Blue Last for THOAP.

    • FYI

Robin Guthrie & band were awesome too. Mark did a new work-in-progress-song with them as an encore, fell a bit flat to my ears, as he was kinda drowned out by Robin's beautiful sounds, and he's no Liz Fraser ;)

Didn't he do three Ride songs during his set? definitely "Polarbear". Was nice to see him again, his floppy fringe replaced by a hat, don't look to closely and you can still see him during the Ride years, and I think he made the most with the limited acoustic setup. But, again, Robin Guthrie was the main course that evening and he was just majestic...

  • Gardener did 3 Ride songs at the Nottingham show...

Polar Bear, In A Different Place and Vapour Trail.

  • Yeah. You guys are right. He played more than just Vapour Trail.

I've not heard anything of Robin Guthrie's solo stuff. I saw Liz Fraser at The RFH last year which was great. I was just glad of seeing two different bands at two venues in the same evening.

    • assuming you know what the Cocteaus sounded like...

Robin playing solo pretty much sounds like vintage Cocteaus, but without vocals. No Cocteaus material was played but some of the slower, more languid numbers sounded like something from "Victorialand" though there were some louder/faster numbers too. You seem to mostly hear Robins guitars, often in loops and layers, but the bassist and drummer he's got with him are very good and round it out well. Live it really packs a punch, very powerful...
