Smoke Ring for my Halo is ace, and large parts of his earlier records are amazing too. Look forward to seeing him again too and hopefully this time he'll be less pissed.

I do like "Smoke Ring For My Halo", but for me The War On Drugs' "Slave Ambient" was by far the better album, and perhaps unfairly shadowed by the former. I can't wait to see what Adam G does next.
I think reception to Slave Ambient was muted at first, but by the end of 2011
it was well represented in year end lists. The songwriting on Smoke Ring For My Halo has more immediate songwriting, so it got more intial hype, but almost 2 years on it is only Slave Ambient that I stll listen to regularly

I've only seen him once
but he was pretty rambly and there were huge gaps of sort of awkward drunk banter between the songs. When he/they were actually playing real songs it was great though.

the acoustic stuff was mostly fine/really good, but i didn't dig the way he re-did Freak Train at all. I mean, I know it's his song and he can play it how he likes, but he took all the drive and passion out of it by singing at weird times and leaving gaps and ... ugh, sadface

The live version of Runner Ups was very flat.
Loved the Smoke Ring album, and Childish Prodigy is a really decent album too..
I think War on Drugs have the edge on him, Slave Ambient and Wagonwheel Blues (just finished listening to it there) are both crackers. Bloody great live as well.
Shai Halperins debut album last year unfortunately faded into obscurity, shame as it was in my top ten for last year.

...think he's playing locally too...Echo in LA...so I'm gonna catch that. (I've only seen him do an acoustic set opening for Built to Spill)

The album is called Sweet Lights by the way, it's great from start to stop.
I haven't seen Kurt Vile live
but it doesn't sound promising. I did see The War On Drugs last year, touring Slave Ambient, and they were incredible. Perfect setlist, great sound, extended jams of their classic songs, and they looked like they were having the time of their lives. One of my favourite gigs of 2012.
Really surprised by a lot of the comments about Kurt Vile live
Only seen him twice - one solo acoustic and one full band - and he absolutely killed both times. Full band show at the Scala was the best gig I saw in 2011, easily. Obviously a lot of people's experiences on here weren't as good as mine but I've never met anyone who's seen him who didn't think he was great.

Downplaying of "acoustic set" wasn't a veiled dismissal of the show. The dude's uber-talented. (Just not as uber-awesome as War on Drugs, to echo earlier comments).

I saw him at The Scala too, loved it!
I agree that he isn't the best for on stage "banter" but that doesn't really bother me for any artist.
I don't necessarily want good banter, I just don't want him rambling drunkenly for 10 minutes at a time between songs.

was a bit dissapointed at first, as I'm not hugely keen on long albums, and I don't really like track 2, but very much into it now - very mesemrising, just washes over you.
It's deceptively complex
So much going on in each song.
Seen a few people not liking track 2 now. I love it, but I'm a sucker for cowbell. Other favs - title track, Goldtone, Air Bud <3
opening track is great - put this on on Sunday afternoon in the sunshine and felt amazing
rest of the album didn't seem to sound as good (as that track, or previous album), but maybe just need to listen more.
yeah, on a basic level I wish some of the songs were shorter
I see myself listen to individual tracks rather than the whole album most of the time, due to the length.
That aside though, the songs are pretty incredible. Wakin On A Pretty Day and Goldtone are perfection, love the motorik beat of Girl Called Alex, Pure Pain sounds most like his old stuff (just updated for his new sound) and Too Hard and Air Bud round it all out nicely. album of the year so far maybe

Totally agree with the album having several great tracks on it..
Only gave it a few listens and it gets better with each listen.
I reckon that'll be in my top five in the half year lists along with Matthew E. White.

Just kind of got it on in the background and it's really great stuff for winding down after enjoying the sunshine.

...definitely grown on me. took a few listens. feels ever so slightly peppier, sunnier than the last one. really feels like he's captured a moment...a blissful one. lovely stuff.
At present he's number one on the best albums of 2013 on Rateyourmusic.
I gave it 9/10, but there are at least 3-4 songs that are 9.510/10.
