The trendy costumes, reverby drums, edge/KoL guitar... and its charlotte church. Just made me cringe a bit. Listening on further into the song it does get better, but I can't bring myself to listen to the indie incarnation of Charlotte church.
i can imagine the album being like bat for lashes
it is a bit jarring that it is charlotte church but her voice sounds a lot more at home doing this than doing that dance-pop stuff she had a go at once before
It seems that the end result is about the combination of attitude and physical ability. So somebody with classical training should still be able to pull off a solid punk tune, if the mindset is there. In fact, how much would you love a band where the singer doesn't show off that power until certain moments where the lyrics need it?
However, this would be a really tough spot to land in. I agree that most folks with amazing technical vocal ability would have trouble keeping a lid on it.
but it's the songwriting that would determine how well her voice could fit into any genre besides, well, opera. And I'm not sold on the songwriting in that piece.
I'm thinking of Adele when I say that culturally we still have a taste for sweeping, powerful female voices, but she's found a comfortable genre to play around in and Charlotte Church doesn't seem to have landed there. I guess we'll see what happens.
Much as I love his early solo records, there are times when his voice is a bit too schmoooove for the material - stuff like The Plague or The Seventh Seal for example.
she'll never be able to "The Shaggs" it up or anything. Maybe if she drank - a LOT - for awhile, she could be like some weathered jazz singer or something. Or maybe a boozer-styled classical singer. THAT could be cool.
why is charlotte church bjork
the whole aesthetic seems a bit try-hard Bjork copying
which I don't entirely like to say because (I don't think) she's doing all this for cynical bandwagonny-jumping reasons
more like bjork-copier-copying though innit
yeah, that's mo accurate
there's definite jarring
couldn't watch more than 10 seconds
why?
hmmm

people who've had uber voice training
will never be able to not sing like that, yeah
while I agree your voice would become conditioned, surely you still have options

bear in mind that she was singing pro 'classical' at age 12
she probably doesn't know how not to sing like it
that vibrato and everything she does
proper singing
real indie
well, she can do what she wants...

wow the lyrics
I've got glitter in my womb
Can't unhear.
That headgear, my word
Like Jamiroquai.
I actually like this "new direction", best of luck to her.
jeff buckley
The indie rock Mariah Carey. Stop warbling and sing the bloody song!
if you want non-showy Jeff
just listen to BSS or whatever, idk.
fucking love Jeff's hystrionics.
I don't hear a technically ''good'' voice...
I do hear a rubbish bit of music with awful lyrics and a lot of faux-pseudo-quasi-etc ''indie'' bs going on though.
Haven't you heard, she's just been shopping

i.e. the contents of a shoebox under any DiSser's bed
Oh god that is actually really embarrassing
Mega-cringe
No one's mentioned Bat For Lashes yet
So, Bat For Lashes
I quite like this FWIW.
Scott Walker

noooooooo
why would anyone say this?!
the old maaaan's back agaai-aaaa-eeeyen...
dwee dubuhduh un dwee dubuduh
I think that is what's great about those records
Hearing him sing 'her sailors stained her cobblestones/with wine and piss and death desire' in that sumptuous voice. Gets me every time.
feel kinda bad for her

I like it
she sounds a bit like the lady from The Cranberries.
Apparently it's *glitter in my wounds* not *womb*, but *womb* is much better!
Possibly, I think this is just an example of a terrible song and a soulless performance
by someone who doesn't really believe in what they're doing.
she wants to believe though
and if the x files has taught me anything, that's what counts
harsh
JK in drag?
