the whole aesthetic seems a bit try-hard Bjork copying
which I don't entirely like to say because (I don't think) she's doing all this for cynical bandwagonny-jumping reasons

The trendy costumes, reverby drums, edge/KoL guitar... and its charlotte church. Just made me cringe a bit. Listening on further into the song it does get better, but I can't bring myself to listen to the indie incarnation of Charlotte church.

it is a bit jarring that it is charlotte church but her voice sounds a lot more at home doing this than doing that dance-pop stuff she had a go at once before

It seems that the end result is about the combination of attitude and physical ability. So somebody with classical training should still be able to pull off a solid punk tune, if the mindset is there. In fact, how much would you love a band where the singer doesn't show off that power until certain moments where the lyrics need it?
However, this would be a really tough spot to land in. I agree that most folks with amazing technical vocal ability would have trouble keeping a lid on it.

well, she can do what she wants...
but it's the songwriting that would determine how well her voice could fit into any genre besides, well, opera. And I'm not sold on the songwriting in that piece.
I'm thinking of Adele when I say that culturally we still have a taste for sweeping, powerful female voices, but she's found a comfortable genre to play around in and Charlotte Church doesn't seem to have landed there. I guess we'll see what happens.

Much as I love his early solo records, there are times when his voice is a bit too schmoooove for the material - stuff like The Plague or The Seventh Seal for example.

she'll never be able to "The Shaggs" it up or anything. Maybe if she drank - a LOT - for awhile, she could be like some weathered jazz singer or something. Or maybe a boozer-styled classical singer. THAT could be cool.
