Local Natives - Hummingbird
Had this on repeat all week and loving it, a strong step forward from their debut.
Heavy Feet, Breakers and Mt. Washington are particular stand out tracks for me.
What's the general consensus?

very good
much more restrained than their debut, doesn't feel like there's any filler. Gutted i missed out on tickets to see them in Leeds.
would have liked to see them in Edinburgh but its the same
night as Desaparecidos! :-(
They're headlining Beacons festival in Skipton this year
Not too far down the road from Leeds...
Just got it last night
Haven't heard it yet properly...snippets seem v promising.
It's not bad but I'm not really liking this
sounds very samey to me, lacking the fun and rhythm changes of the first one. They seem to be going down the Grizzly Bear path.
Also, what's the deal with "Three Months" ? Easily the worst track I've heard this year.
there is a GB
kind feel to it, which i don't mind at all, just sounds a bit more grown up than Gorilla Manor i think.
What's wrong with Three Months?
Still waiting for my 'Pre-order' to arrive
annoying
First listen
Bit disappointed. Sounds like more of the same but not as interesting and more formulaic. Its almost a bit whiny in places.
Shame, I loved Gorilla Manor.
to be fair it did pass over me a bit on first listen as thought it was a
bit samey, but delved into it more and I'm hooked now
Loved Gorilla Manor but...
half a stream of this and I just can't be fucked at the moment.
it's streaming on Spotify and Soundcloud
https://soundcloud.com/local-natives/sets/hummingbird
It is a little downbeat to say the least.
There's some decent tracks (first three songs, Breakers, black balloons ?) but I kind of get the feeling they still haven't fully escaped their influences. Still, going to see them next week in Leeds - see how it pans out live.
I got a little Antlers sound from it.
I'd not over enamoured by this kind of vibe but gone back four times now so there's something to it.
It's not as immediate as Gorilla Manor is it? Or as catchy
but it's a grower, i think. Love the first two tracks and Bowery, but still yet to realise the rest.. Worried it might just be a bit boring in the middle..
I haven't given it enough listens yet
It's definitely a shift in mood from GM, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, and there's nothing to say they can't go back to making an album like that. I guess I'd seen quite a few of these songs live at ATP so that's made it a bit more immediate I guess, but I'm definitely enjoying it, it's just a very different mood. Colombia is absolutely heartbreaking.
proper grower
it's nothing new obvs but i've had it for a while now and still gets better every time. Columbia is SO beautiful..
ps why no album review on here?
.
I think it's more cohesive as an album than GM
but that may be entirely due to the more melancholy air running throughout. I think I liked GM so much becuase it jumped around a lot, it was a bit more eclectic. I'm really enjoying Hummingbird though, prefer GM, but it's still a great album. Completely agree with tishandfipsy that it's a grower too.
Beginning to really fall in love with this album now
Much sadder, melancholy record than I expected
Since I found Gorilla Manor quite sterile this is a huge plus. Only had one listen but even more encouraged now others say its a grower.
melancholic*
Good album but a little too downbeat ?
That said, looking forward to their Beacons Sat night headline slot.
Yeah, I think they'll fit the bill well
A bit different from most other acts there...and have two albums worth of material to build a set out of.
Did I already say I think it's great?
Canna read thru above. Just clicked on this to get into Music Forum.
You said it was "v promising"
so "great" is a whole new level.
very MOR, imo.
How are we feeling about this several months down the road?
I absolutely love it. Three Months is definitely the weakest link, but the rest is excellent, if a bit more downbeat (understandable given the events leading up to the making of the record). Columbia may be one of the most heart-wrenching songs i've heard. Hard not to choke up a bit listening to it.
Three Months is one of my favourite songs on the album.
Really don't get the lack of love for it.
i love his voice
but i find it whiny and grating on this track. it just annoys me
Absolutely love it
Perfect follow up to Gorilla Manor really, just shows have they've matured and dealt with a difficult period. Think Black Balloons is my current favourite. As you say I can barely listen to Colombia, especially on the train in the morning if I'm tired/hungover, far too crushing.
If you'd have told me it would be one of my favourite albums a third into the year
I wouldn't have believed you as Gorilla Manor never clicked for me. I wouldn't say it's an "amazing record" but it's solid quality all the way through, has a lot of heart to it, is produced excellently and features my favourite track this year in Columbia.
for me still the album of the year so far
its amazing. The absolute definition of a grower too. It grows and grows and grows and gets more wonderful each time.
Still a strong contender for album of the year so far...
just awesome!
i'm enjoying this a lot
it ends so well, too. Think Mt Washington might be one of my favourite songs of the year so far, with Columbia close behind it.
I love Ceilings most
Question about Columbia
Do people hear "Every night I ask myself" or "Every night I'll ask myself"? Because I think it's a key distinction; the first is a bit "look at me I'm suffering" (being a bit harsh here) whereas the second is more of a promise to honour is mum this way. I like to think its the second example.
Even if it's 'Every night I ask myself'
which I think it is, surely he's saying that he strives to be better every day (because of his mum)?
Yeah I know
It is still a heartwarming gesture I was just being mean to make the distinction. I just find the second possibility a little less showy.
the former
'Every night I ask myself, am i giving enough?'
if ever there was a song that deserves the minutiae level of analysis given here..
.. this is it. still Song of the Year for me.
really consistent album though, and a proper slow grower
Echoing all the above, probably my favourite album this year
I don't find myself listening to it that much, as it's a really downbeat and draining listen in places, but every time I stick it on I really enjoy it start to finish.
Which is in real contrast to GM, which I felt had a few real great stand-out tracks, but didn't flow too well as an album.
Anyone heard the Spotify session they have done?
Nice stripped versions. Loving this album more and more.
This is nice.
