Rank an artist's album closers
funkycow's thread is fun. And as suggested, it could be done for album closers too. So I'm going to do R.E.M.
Wendell Gee > Superman > You > Falls To Climb > Me In Honey > Little America > Untitled > Electrolite > Find The River > Oddfellows Local 151 > West Of The Fields > Stumble > Blue > I'm Gonna DJ >>>> Beachball > Around The Sun
- Relevant artist taggings:
- None

Yo La Tengo (very good at epic closers)...
Night Falls On Hoboken > The Story Of Yo La Tengo > I Hear You Looking > Before We Run > Blue Line Swinger > And The Glitter Is Gone > My Little Corner Of The Road > Take Care > Satellite > What Can I Say > Let’s Compromise > Closing Time
(and I know I've missed something...)
It's the story of Yo La 'Tango' but
otherwise...
I thought I'd screwed it up in my itunes library and corrected it
stupid.
and My Little Corner Of The World, obvs
there are some corkers in there
I Heard You Looking is one of my favourite songs ever so that would be one, but other than that fair play
night falls on hoboken no. 1 !
are you out of your mind?
No
It sets up a groove around that bassline and doesn't get boring through its 17 minutes or whatever.
Here's something [probably not] interesting:
I really like that album and I've probably listened to it 20+ times all the way through, but I think I've slept through Night Falls On Hoboken every single time, without fail. Like I've fallen asleep and woken up when the album's finished. Couldn't tell you a thing about it.
Night falls on automatik
Brand New
Soco Amaretto Lime = Play Crack the Sky = Handcuffs = Noro
Seriously, can't choose between them. Brand New are the kings of closing tracks.
Play Crack The Sky > Soco Amaretto Lime > Noro > Handcuffs
if i had to choose
pretty much immediately changed my mind
fuck it
See, difficult to pick one isn't it?
Brand New's closers are always my least favourite songs :(
SFA
Slow Life > Mountain People > Mawrth Oer Ar y Blaned Neifion > Pric > For Now and Ever > Let the Wolves Howl at the Moon > Keep the Cosmic Trigger Happy > Fragile Happiness > Cabin Fever
Cabin Fever last?!!!!
Not having that! Cabin fever is beautiful. The piano finale is heart breaking! I'd have it second only to Mountain People .
slow life is probably my favourite SFA song
I only realised yesterday how fucking boomtastic
slow life is.
Pixies
Gouge Away > Levitate Me > Brick is Red > The Navajo Know > Havalina
Havalina has to be second for me
Otherwise correct
Pearl Jam
Indifference > Release > Inside Job > The End > Around the Bend > All or None > Hey Foxymophandlemama > All Those Yesterdays > Parting Ways
*
Release > Indifference > All Those Yesterdays > Inside Job > All or None > The End > Parting Ways > Around the Bend > Hey Foxymophandlemama
my attempt at this thread crashed and burned :'(
not that I'm jealous or anything ... biatch
Anyway, Modest Mouse, almost as goos as their openers
Styrofoam Boots/It's All Nice On Ice, Alright > The Good Times Are Killing Me > Other People's Lives > Space Travel Is Boring > Karma's Payment > What People Are Made Of > I've Got It All (Most) > I Came As A Rat (Long Walk Off A Short Dock) > Invisible > Blue Cadet-3, Do You Wanna Connect?
Mansun
Being a Girl > Dark Mavis/Lyrical Trainspotter > Goodbye
Radiohead
The Tourist > Motion Picture Soundtrack > Separator > Videotape > Street Spirit (Fade Out) > A Wolf At The Door (It Girl. Rag Doll.) > Blow Out > Life In A Glass House.
Radiohead are great at closers
Motion Picture Soundtrack > Life In A Glasshouse > Videotape > Separator > A Wolf At The Door > The Tourist > Street Spirit > Blow Out
Separator is a great song (mostly because it sounds a bit like the mighty Reckoner)
Street Spirit > Separator > Life In a Glass House > Wolf At The Door > Motion Picture Soundtrack > Videotape > The Tourist > Blow Out
Better than the openers list, mostly as it includes the only good song on Pablo Honey
Pretty good
I think I agree with it, but I put The Tourist under Videotape. Though I feel like Videotape might be their PRETTIEST song.
Life in a Glass House > Motion Picture Soundtrack > Videotape > Wolf at the Door > Street Spirit (Fade Out) > The Tourist > Separator > Blow Out
don't think there will be a better set of closers in this thread.
Sonic Youth
The Diamond Sea > Expressway to yr Skull > Sympathy for the Strawberry > White Kross > Sweet Shine > Creme Brulee > Eliminator Jr > Titanium Expose > Massage the History > Or > Heather Angel > Lightnin’ > Peace Attack > The Good and the Bad > Lee is Free > Echo Canyon
Death Valley 69 is Bad Moon Rising's actual last song
Echo Canyon is the last track on the ep that was addded to the end of Bad Moon for the original cd
therefore doesn't count properly
Doh!
The Diamond Sea > Expressway to yr Skull > Sympathy for the Strawberry > Death Valley 69 > White Kross > Sweet Shine > Creme Brulee > Eliminator Jr > Titanium Expose > Massage the History > Or > Heather Angel > Lightnin’ > Peace Attack > The Good and the Bad > Lee is Free
Given how good they are at sprawling epic art rock mess
SY should be better at closers...
The Cure
Three Imaginary Boys (refusing to count The Weedy Burton) > Faith > End > Pornography > Seventeen Seconds > Sinking > Untitled > Bloodflowers > The Top >>> It's Over >>> Bare >>>>>>>>> Going Nowhere >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Fight
Not counting compilations/non-studio albums of any kind.
My Bloody Valentine
Soon > I Can See It (But I Can't Feel It)
Wonder 2 > Soon > I Can See It (But I Can't Feel it)
Soon = wonder 2 > I Can See It (But I Can't Feel It)
Springsteen
jungleland > new york city serenade > reason to believe > it's hard to be a saint in the city > darkness on the edge of town > wreck on the highway > devil's arcade > my hometown > we are alive > my city of ruins > my beautiful reward > valentine's day > matamoros banks > the last carnival > my best was never good enough > the long goodbye
Velvet Underground
Shit, this is hard
Sister Ray > Oh! Sweet Nuthin' > After Hours > European Son
Actually any order at all works
Sister Ray is definitely the best
can't argue with that
Oh! Sweet Nuthin' > Sister Ray = After Hours > European Son
Mclusky/Future Of The Left
minus hidden tracks
Support Systems > Notes On Achieving Orbit > Lapsed Catholics > Whoyouknow > The Contrarian > World Cup Drumming
Why is The Contrarian so low down?
Lyrically it's the best song he's ever written.
Yeah it's really great and I love it
It just so happens that the ones above it are even better.
Eels are -incredible- at ending albums
PS. You Rock My World > Manchild > On My Feet > Selective Memory* > Ordinary Man > Things The Grandchildren Should Know > Somebody Loves You > Mystery Of Life > What Is This Note?
* E considers "Selective Memory" to be the true final song of Daisies of the Galaxy, which is why he hid "Mr E's Beautiful Blues" at the end after some silence after record company pressure to put it on the album. So I'm going with E's wishes here...
SO MUCH THIS.
Los Campesinos!
Coda: A Burn Scar in the Shape of the Sooner State > 2007, The Year That Punk Rock Broke (My Heart) > Light Leaves, Dark Sees Pt. II
Hello Sadness's closer is probably my least favourite LC! song, period.
There's no way that Sweet Dreams, Sweet Cheeks shouldn't be thought of as HONY's closing track.
Good point, it wouldn't affect my order though. I just realised that I missed out WAB,WAD for some reason, so mine would actually be:
Coda: A Burn Scar in the Shape of the Sooner State > Sweet Dreams, Sweet Cheeks > All Your Kayfabe Friends > Light Leaves, Dark Sees Pt. II
That's a good question
I feel like my list is pretty much that, though Light Leaves, Dark Sees Pt. II is REALLY GOOD.
DAVID FUCKING BOWIE
Strangers When We Meet > The Secret Life of Arabia > Rock'n'Roll Suicide > Lady Grinning Soul > Subterraneans > Fame > Wild is the Wind > Red Money > It's No Game (Pt 2) > The Bewlay Brothers > Heathen (The Rays) > Bring Me the Head of the Disco King > Memory of a Free Festival > The Supermen > Dancing With the Big Boys > Shake It > Where Have All the Good Times Gone > Please Mr Gravedigger > Law (Earthlings on Fire) > The Wedding Song > The Dreamers > Bang Bang > Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family (if you were allowed to count Big Brother this would obviously be way higher)
The Bewlay Brothers
was the first time when listening to an album I thought 'hmm yes, albums should end like this!'
Cardiacs
Everso Closely Guarded Line > Foundling > Wireless > Will Bleed Amen > To Go Off And Things > The Whole World Window
th_strks
Take It Or Leave It > Red Light > Life Is Simple In The Moonlight > I Can't Win
barely anything between them though.
I LOVE I Can't Win though
:(
The Fall 70s - 80s
(I'm using the original vinyl tracklistings to avoid confusion over the Beggars era albums)
And This Day > The NWRA > Hexen Definitive/Strife Knot > Leave The Capitol > Music Scene > Put Away > Last Nacht > To NK Roachment: Yarbles > Shoulder Pads #2 > Oswald Defence Lawyer > Disney's Dream Debased > Papal Visit
New Order
Leave Me Alone > Dream Attack > Face Up > Denial > Avalanche > Every Little Counts > Run Wild > Working Overtime
Big drop-off after the first 3...
The Smiths
Suffer Little Children > Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want > I Won't Share You > Some Girls are Bigger than Others > Meat is Murder
joanna newsom
clam, crab, cockle, cowrie > cosmia > baby birch (> does not suffice > occident)
Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie > Baby Birch > Occident > Does Not Suffice > Cosmia
Really odd because Ys is my favourite of her records...
Baby Birch is all kinds of amazing
Well they all are, cos it's Joanna Newsom, but still
Cosmia > Does Not Suffice > Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie
Baby Birch > Occident
I see 'have one on me' is one whole album though.
John Maus
Believer > And Heaven Turned To Her Weeping > Times Is Weird
Nick Cave
Have to say his openers are better than his closers...
Lucy > Jack the Ripper > Do You Love Me (pt 2) > Babe I’m On Fire > Scum > New Morning > The Carnival is Over > O Children > A Box for Black Paul > Green Eyes > The Six Strings That Drew Blood > Darker With the Day > Death is Not the End > More News from Nowhere > Fable of the Brown Ape
Tindersticks
CF:GF > The Not Knowing > The Turns We Took > Walking > Piano Music > Goodbye Joe > Chilitetime > Running Wild > Sleepy Song
The Magnetic Fields
(assuming 69 Love Songs is three albums)
100,000 Fireflies > Take Ecstasy With Me > From a Sinking Boat > Zebra > It's Only Time > All She Cares About Is Mariachi > I Shatter > Suddenly There Is A Tidal Wave > Courtesans > The Things We Did & Didn't Do > The Dreaming Moon > Dust Bowl
Death Cab for Cutie!
I'm including the reissue of You Can Play These Songs With Chords, so I can include Army Corps of Architects
A Lack of Color > Army Corps of Architects > Scientist Studies > The Ice is Getting Thinner > Stable Song > Line of Best Fit > Debate Exposes Doubt > Stay Young, Go Dancing
Scientist Studies > Army Corps > A Lack Of Colour > Stable Song > Stay Young, Go Dancing > Debate Exposes Doubt > Line Of Best Fit > The Ice Is Getting Thinner
At least we can agree: Army Corps of Architects is a fucking amazing song.
My Bloody Valentine
Soon > I Can See It (But I Can't Feel It)
Soon > Wonder 2 > I Can See It (But I Can't Feel It)
<3
LCD Soundsystem
new york i love you, but yr bringing me down > home > great release
but if we're counting disc 2 of lcd soundsystem, then it's
new york i love you, but yr bringing me down > yr city's a sucker > home
Exactly
To the second one, at least. Yr City's a Sucker is probably in my Top 5 LCD tracks. I hadn't even heard it until I saw them on the This Is Happening tour. That song is a fucking menace.
Those three songs, though. All three of them are absolutely incredible.
Loutallica
Junior Dad > all other music
Blur
Didn't realise until now how shite they were at closing an album. Stupid experimental/joke tracks. Anyway...
Battery in your leg > Resigned > Wear Me Down > Yuko and Hiro > Essex Dogs > Optigan 1 > Lot 105
a list of their penultimate tracks would surely be about a million times better?
I think we need another thread about ranking.
Album openers > tracks 7s > antepenultimate tracks > penultimate tracks > album closers
> hidden tracks
Soundgarden
Like Suicide > Boot Camp > Full On (Reprise) > New Damage > Rowing > Incessant Mace
Elliott Smith
I Didn't Understand > Say Yes > The Biggest Lie > Bye > Kiwi Maddog 20/20
pretty much agree, with A Distorted Reality... after the biggest lie
I didn't understand is heartbreaking.
The version of Distorted Reality which was the b-side to the original release of Pretty (Ugly Before)
is so much better than the one on From a Basement. that one would've been second or third.
Mars Volta
Cassandra Geminni > Take the Veil > Zed with Two Naughts > Conjugal Burns > Luciforms > El Ciervo Vulnerado
Mastodon
The Last Baron > Elephant Man > Battle At Sea > Joseph Merrick > Pendulous Skin > The Sparrow
Turns out Mastodon are a comparatively weak last track band. The Sparrow is last because I can't even remember what it sounds like which has got to be a bad thing. Luckily the Last Baron is one of their all time best songs.
joseph merrick is weak
why would you ever put anything after hearts alive i dunno
Did Led Zep in the openers thread so.....
When The Levee Breaks > How Many More Times > Sick Again > Bring It On Home > Tea For One > The Ocean > I'm Gonna Crawl > Hats Off To (Roy) Harper
Manic Street Preachers
PCP > No Surface All Feeling > Condemned To Rock 'N' Roll > Cardiff Afterlife > Freedom Of Speech Won't Feed My Children > Gold Against The Soul > SYMM > Don't Be Evil > Winterlovers > William's Last Words
Animal Collective
Alvin Row > Brother Sport > De Soto De Son > Turn Into Something > Derek > Amanita > Whaddit I Done > Too Soon > In The Singing Box
Their closing tracks are way better than their opening tracks
Too Soon > Whaddit I Done > Alvin Row > Brother Sport > Amanita Turn Into Something > Derek > In the Singing Box
Rolo Tomassi
Cosmology>Illuminare>Fantasia
Okkervil River
John Allyn Smith Sails > Seas Too Far To Reach > A Glow > Okkervil River Song > Bruce Wayne Campbell... > The Rise
Deftones
Pink Maggit > MX > This Place Is Death > Riviere > Moana > Fist > What Happened To You?
Guided By Voices, like I did for the openers
Huffman Prairie Flying Field > Alright > Non-Absorbing > Captain's Dead > On The Tundra > You're Not An Airplane > An Unmarked Product > Everywhere Is Miles From Everywhere > No Transmission > We Won't Apologise For The Human Race > Privately > How Loft Am I? > Take To The Sky > Father Sgt. Christmas Card > Radio Show > Crocker's Favourite Song > Adverse Wind > Of Mites And Men > Bomb The Bee-Hive
Not as good as I was expecting, another case of a band where their second-to-last tracks might have been much stronger (i.e. Peep-Hole and Redmen And Their Wives)
Wilco.
One Sunday Morning > Reservations > On and On and On > In A Future Age > The Late Greats > Dreamer in my Dreams > Too Far Apart > Everlasting Everything
Morrissey
Speedway > There's A Place In Hell For Me And My Friends > Southpaw > I'm OK By Myself > You Know I Couldn't Last > Margaret On The Guillotine > At Last I Am Born > Tomorrow > Satan Rejected My Soul
oh mannn, Speedway is brilliant
Pavement
Infinite Spark>...and Carrot Rope>Our Singer>Filmore Jive>Western Homes
is Infinite Spark 'Fin'?
if so, that is probably my favourite Pavement song.
the Mountain Goats
Pale Green Things > Ezekiel 7 and the Permanent Efficacy of Grace > Absolute Lipthos Effect > In Corolla > Pigs That Ran Straightaway Into the Water, Triumph Of >Going To Scotland > Quetzalcoatl Is Born > Liza Forever Minnelli > We Were Patriots > It's All Here in Brownsville > Alpha Rats Nest > Michael Myers Resplendent > Cold Milk Bottle > One Frozen River > Keep it On Your Mind > Transcendental Youth > Eleven Bands
First five are amongst his best songs but I think another one where the penultimate tracks are a lot better, generally (Source Decay, The Alphonse Mambo, Oceanographer's Choice, Spent Gladiator 2 etc)
I feel like Pale Green Things might be the best song he's ever written.
The god machine
The piano song>>>>Sunday song
One of the bands best songs vs their worst song.
Weezer
Only In Dreams > Butterfly > every other Weezer closer
I'm only being honest.
The Breeders
Huffer > Mountain Battles > Metal Man > Roi(reprise)
Menomena
The Monkey's Back > West > Light > One Horse > INTIL
Nothing much wrong with INTIL, just a very strong list.
Mogwai
Mogwai Fear Satan > We're No Here > You're Lionel Richie > The Precipice > Punk Rock/Puff Daddy/ANTICHRIST > Stop Coming To My House > Secret Pint
this
apart from swap Secret Pint and Punk Rock..., those first 4 tunes are fucking monsters
The Wave Pictures
Cassius Clay > Live In Europe > American Boom > We Sugared Our Apples > Nothing Can Change This Love > Chinatown > Epping Forest > Long Black Cars > In the City Centre > Slice by Slice
