Bands/Artists who've lost it, and the release on which they did so.
Inspired by the thread on the new Biffy Clyro album.
Snow Patrol (who were always kinda shit anyway) and Final Straw is the obvious one, isn't it?
Go.

for the record,
I was too young for 'good Biffy' at the time, so I listened to 'Glitter and Trauma' last night, and it was pretty dull.
I think they've aged quite badly, now that we all know what they became
I mean, I hardly listen to Biffy these days anyway, but there was a point when they were my favourite band. But I can't really recommend to anyone why then was so much better than now other than "it just was".
The Vertigo of Bliss is still a great album chocked full of amazing songs, but now they're just a more boring and conventional version, and that's all really.
yep
I find it a bit embarrassing listening to them now, but I used to bum those first three albums so hard as a teenager
I think VOB has aged pretty well
Blackened Sky, not so much
I think Blackened Sky has aged the best of the "three good Biffy albums"
probably because, production aside, it's the nearest in sound to the big pop hooks they have now and it has a grungy influence in it that helps keep it slightly detached from the time it was released.
Unless its just because I listened to the other two more at the time so I've tired them out and they remind me too much of my old university house
BS sounds pretty cheesy now
VOB still doesn't really sound like anyone else - they really carved their own niche with that one. To me, albums that weren't part of any 'trends' age best, and VOB is one of them.
they were never good
just not as popular
TV On the Radio- 'Nine Types of Light'
I think you have to give a band a chance to rebound before jumping to conclusions like that
TVOTR certainly have the talent to write another great album.
that said, I loved Dear Science
probably now second favourite album by them
Final Straw had some hell of good moments on
Eyes Open, though, was unmitigated shite
Except the one with Martha
really liked that.
(The DiS records cut from that track with Martha pretty much funded the Youthmovies album too)
agree with this
Spitting Games is still great
exactly
like Because Of The Times by Kings of Leon, it's one of those occasions were going bigger actually sounds better for the band
The first three Kings of Leon albums were great
I bet if we could easily look back at comments from the time (I know it's technically possible), you'd find that more people on here felt that way than didn't.
and for this thread
Stars - In Our Bedroom, After The War
agreed, BUT:
Bedroom wasn't good at all. But The North has totally won me over, great album.
Heavily disagree, it had some outstanding songs on it.
The first two tracks, man
Pretty much my favourite start to an album ever. Really sounds like it's going to be their heartbreaking, synth-pop masterpiece.
Then it all goes a bit rubbish :(
Oh and Bitches In Tokyo is wonderful <3
The Shins - Port of Morrow
and i had such high hopes based on Simple Song.
I think lost it is a pretty strong term...
but there's certainly been albums where an artist has gone out of sync with my tastes - to repeat myself on something i said yesterday, the last 2 phosphorescent albums have been far too country for my tastes but pride was fantastic and i'm really looking forward to the new album as it's heading back in to my taste zone and away from the country. Lots of people didn't like the change apparat made personally i loved it as it alligned perfectly to my tastes at the time.
Interpol - Interpol.
agree
what's the attraction, besides a cool name?
Always get them mixed up with Snow Patrol, who are also mentioned in this thread
Which ones had the hit song about a dead dog?
Band of Horses
Infinite Arms
Ha, ha that was the first album I heard by them
Now it's the only one as it certainly didn't inspire me to investigate their back catalogue.
The first two are great
Quite what happened with this I don't know. Shame.
Kings of Leon- 'Only By the Night'
It's 'Because of the Times' surely?
British Sea Power - Valhalla Dancehall
Steadily downhill since The Decline IMO, but *really* lost it with that one.
The Gaslight Anthem - American Slang
Nah, that's a great album (though admittedly not as good as 59).
Handwritten isn't bad either.
I'd say
American Slang is an album that shows that the band had found their sound and niche and were relaxing into it whereas the previous releases all showed progress toward a new sound American Slang and Handwritten both show a band refining and settling. They're not bad or unenjoyable albums but, depending on what 'it' is then you could argue they show that the band have lost their spark maybe.
I've tried and tried with both albums,
but get bored after three or four songs. The '59 Sound was much more immediate, and there was a sense of urgency that both later albums have lacked. Handwritten was better than American Slang, but I've just had enough of listening to Brian Fallon singing about listening to his fucking radio.
Weezer - Maladroit
I came here to say exactly this.
Good show.
nah, one earlier
no fucking way
The Green Album is amazing. I will defend it to the death.
so wrong
Maladroit is probably their strangest/most idiosyncratic album - their Wowee Zowee. Plus the solo on Fall Together is one of Rivers best
The solo on Take Control <3
Maladroit is a great album. Make Believe is unmitigated shite.
Make Believe is blatantly where they lost it.
Green and Maladroit are a step down from the first two obviously, but both are still pretty solid. Make Believe is 80% pure shit.
they're a great band
if you're 12.
Death Cab for Cutie - Codes & Keys
It was GOOD, but it... just...
It was a record by a sad bastard who just married every nerdy guy's dream girl. What's that guy got to be sad about? Fucking NOTHING. I want him to give me sad bastard music.
Looking forward to the next DCfC record!
and that marriage certainly worked out well!
really poor album
was properly excited for it too.
Yeah exactly! That marriage was over so damn quick!
I feel like his solo record/retreat back to The Postal Service is a bit of a good sign for the state of the next DCfC record. Codes & Keys is the first one that I didn't obsess over for weeks on end. In fact, I think I stopped listening after I'd written about it.
It's selfish, but I just want my sad bastard musicians to stay angsty, and write me horribly tragic songs. It's why I wish that Aidan Moffat would experience persistent, unending sorrow. Because I want that sorrow to be pressed into records.
Radiohead - OK Computer
do not feed
i'll stand beside you and take the hate Sloame!
Cheers man. Solidarity is the only way we'll keep these fuckers in check.
green day - dookie
*nimrod
*American Idiot
Mercury Rev - All is Dream
Nah
Secret Migration. All is Dream is a solid record.
Mansun - Little Kix
Smashing Pumpkins - Adore
It's okay in places. But it's where the downward spiral began for Corgan.
Also Ramones - Road to Ruin. Just doesn't hold up to the first 3 albums and they never did anything better than those 3 (It's Alive as an exception)
nope sorry
Adore's brilliant.
Idlewild - Warning/Promises
Muse - Black Holes and Revelations
Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
Nope
Dear Catastrophe Waitress. Truly appalling album.
Nope
Write About Love. Previous two are great.
I dunno, it's not classic B&S but I think it's got its moments
for me:
the first three albums + EPs: gold
FYHCYWLAP / storytelling / DCW: patchy but listenable
TLP / write about love: no thanks
the life pursuit is certainly listenable, for what they are tracks like funny little frog, another sunny day and blues are still blue are all terrific. i'm too young to have appreciated any of the earlier records when the came out, though they're my favourite band for what they did between 1996-1998. i think after the 'this is just a modern rock song, ep their early magic was replaced by a polish that's charming but not quite the same, you can see it in [an undeniably great] song like the model, it's great but there's a space to it, that replacing their early bumbling charm. i don't think they've ever made a bad record so it's ahrd to say where they lost it but if pushed i'd say around 'fold your hands ....'
Lies
DCW is one of their best, I may be in the minority, but the songs are great, as is the production.
Dear Catastrophe Waitress is my favorite B&S album.
It's not as good as Tigermilk, sure, but I love the songs on that album so much more. If She Wants Me is one of my favorite songs by them, or almost any band. And Piazza, New York Catcher too. Good god.
Belle & Sebastian don't make bad records. They just make records that are better and worse than other Belle & Sebastian records.
Don't talk shite
they're all pretty great
except for the soundtrack one.
Beck - Guero
Though lost it is a bit strong, all his late period albums are quite enjoyable. But his last great album was Sea Change, and since he's sounded a bit like a (pretty decent) early Beck impersonator.
QOTSA - Lullabies to Paralyze
Efterklang - Magic Chairs
This would split DiS, but this album sounded like they flipped the MOR switch. Piramida marginally better.
New Order - Republic
Pains me to say it as I'm a MASSIVE fan but this was the point where they lost it, both in terms of musical quality control and in terms of their once closely guarded mystique. Went from not even having their name on their album sleeves to promoting the first single from the album on Baywatch FFS. They've had sporadic moments of brilliance since - Crystal, the title track of WFTSC for example - but they've never been the same band.
yep. came in here to post this too
you could make a really great album selecting the tracks released since technique, but not the several albums they have released.
strictly speaking it was from the set of baywatch rather than on baywatch, but yeah, that, football songs, releasing multiple mixes as singles instead of proper non album b sides...
OK let's do it
Regret
Ruined in a Day
Everyone Everywhere
Here to Stay
Crystal
Behind Closed Doors
Turn My Way
WFTSC
Krafty
Guilt is a Useless Emotion
Yep, pretty good album that.
are you nuts?
World In Motion is 100% class
Metallica - The Black Album
blasphemy
I totally agree with you Puds.
I quite enjoyed Black on 1st listen, but I don't like it at all now. And Justice... was such a good record.
Pet Shop Boys - Very
Noooooooooooooo!!!!
Very is a fantastic album. Bilingual is where they really lost it, & didn't really get it back until Yes.
It's been 20 years, I'll give it another listen
nofx - the decline
hilariously
Lil Wayne - Rebirth
He (and Cash Money Records) are slowly becoming the Ed Hardy of rap
It has been so long since he made a good record, I'm having trouble defending him anymore.
It's sad that he hasn't made a properly good record in five years.
Jimmy Eat World - Futures
i don't think they lost it as such
but i do think, after Clarity they suffered massively from diminishing returns, but then they would, Clarity's near perfect.
why is that first comma there, there shouldn't be a comma there
there
Difficult to say with Jimmy, because my tastes began to change a fair bit
in the gap between Futures and Chase This Light, and that change had been so big that I don't even know if there have been any releases since Chase This Light. But I really liked Futures at the time and still have a soft spot for a few tracks from it. Chase This Light, however, is unlistenable. Maybe it's because it doesn't come with nostalgia.
Futures wasn't as good as Bleed American or Clarity, even at the time, but I wouldn't put it down as the point of no return.
Simple Minds - Once Upon A Time
Public Enemy - Muse Sick-n-Hour Mess Age
Minus the Bear
OMNI
Planet of Ice is one of my favourites, i rinsed that SO HARD. But OMNI's just so so bad.
:/
Oasis - Be Here Now
and, no coincidence:
NME - 1997
Oasis - (What's The Story) Morning Glory
Definitely Maybe was a great album, hard as it is to recall that now. Everything since has been horrible. And that includes Morning Glory. Wonderwall and Don't Look Back In Anger were rightly outed as dirges at the time by people that reviewed them... only for them to do an about face when people started singing them, and kept singing them.
This assessment goes as far as "Standing On The Shoulder..." because after that I couldn't even bring myself to listen, so maybe they became ace again. The singles would suggest not.
Heathen Chemistry = 2nd best Oasis album
REM - Chronic Town
I liked them until then.
Depeche Mode - Ultra
They were on an upward trajectory until Ultra, and then they dropped the ball. Subsequent records had peaks but I could never be bothered to listen to them all the way through after Songs of Faith and Devotion.
The Cure
Wild Mood Swings, although I can listen to Bloodflowers and enjoy it.
