Listening to Underword 'Oblivion With Bells' right now
Hadn't heard them in a while, but heard King Of Snake yesterday somewhere so I thought I would dig them out. Can we talk about them please?

Karl Hyde has a solo album coming out soon.
Didn't really take to the track I heard from it the other day though.
I really liked the Karl Hyde solo track
and have preordered the album. I think as long as people aren't necessarily expecting four-to-the-floor techno then most Underworld fans are on fairly safe territory with it...
Hugely underrated album
IMO. Yeah, let's talk about them!
The first half is stunning.
I have huge respect for how they went underground and experimental after Emerson left the group.
Anyone else enjoy the Riverrun series?
Haven't heard the Karl Hyde solo stuff yet but wouldn't be surprised if it was below-par after the big disappointment of Barking. The Olympics tunes were good but I'll never be sure if they work outside that context; every time I hear Caliban's Dream I can see the torch being lit and feel a little bit patriotic.
Oblivion With Bells is probably Underworld's third best album (after dubnobasswithmyheadman & Second Toughest in the Infants)
Just listened to OWB few days ago.
*Just listened again to OWB few days ago.
Yeah I agree with all this
Brilliant series those Riverrun releases. When I interviewed him for DiS we spoke at length about these but the interview being about 2 hours long was cut down, so not sure if that made the cut. Will google it when I get to a proper computer. But they were very important releases for the band at a time when the industry and traditional way of working restricted their output hugely. They're also great pieces of experimental music making.
OWB is a very solid record too. I adore much of it though due to the crossover much of it has with the Sunshine OST argument, it somehow made it feel slightly less 'new'? 'Beautiful burnout' is inmy top 5 Underworld tunes for sure.
Shame 'Barking' was so dire as those free shows they released on the website had early versions of most of those tracks and they were properly great. 'Scribble' in particular got far worse once they strted collaborating.
Not sure where they go next. I'd be happy for them to ditch the bangers entirely and just put out onelast great, slower release. But they operate on their own terms, when they feel the need to, so guess we'll see.
Here it is

A lot of the Riverrun stuff is still in there actually...
Brilliant, thanks vamos. Will be reading that today.
My favourite Underworld release is the Tokyo live album because it includes some of the Riverrun tracks as well as the oldies. The version of Back In The Fears from that gig is great, 11 minutes rather than the snippet on the studio release. It was probably the most expensive CD I ever bought!
Ahhh I've never heard that
Thought I pretty much had the lot too!
Will have to hunt it down.
Actually, according to their site there is a fair bit of stuff that's snuck out which I must have missed...

Very good article, thanks for the link. Karl Hyde seems like a nice guy and full of ideas - hope you had fun chatting to him. He was also born in my county and not many musicians have that, er, honour!
Cheers fella
He was a delight to talk to, and being one of my favourite acts ever I was terrified. But in the end our 30 minute chat ended up being over an hour. The only reason we finished chatting when we did was because the PR guys pointed out he'd agreed to meet his wife for tea.
One of the things I had to cut was that he told me Rick was working on the most amazing job at the time, but it was totally hush hush. In hindsight, it's pretty obvious that the 'big secret project with Danny Boyle' was the Olympics.
Really hope that residency where they play all the quieter album tracks still comes to something...
I absolute love Beaucoup Fish.
