Rank an artist's album openers...
Let's face it, we all love ranking on DiS.
I came up with this thread after Ohm hooked me into the latest Yo La Tengo album. I’d been quite indifferent to their releases since Summer Sun, but Fade is a real return to form (and Ohm a highlight IMHO). I then realised one of the things I love about YLT is the way their opening tracks often ease you into albums which get a lot noisier. I guess you could do this for closing tracks too…
Ohm > Beach Party Tonight > Decora > Big Day Coming > Sea Urchins > Everyday > Return To Hot Chicken > Pass The Hatchet > Detouring America With Horns > Here To Fall > The Cone Of Silence > Can’t Forget
- Relevant artist taggings:
- None

An unusual ranking thread idea, I'll give you that
As with all ranking threads, I'll do The Jesus & Mary Chain:
Just Like Honey > Darklands > Reverance > Here Comes Alice > Dirty Water > I Love Rock n Roll
Pavement
Summer Babe > Stereo > We Dance > Spit On A Stranger > Silence Kit
wut, SK kicks so much ass
Silence Kit > Stereo > Summer Babe > Spit On A Stranger > We Dance
I remember being a bit surprised they played 'We Dance' when I saw them live.
I'd always just considered it an odd opening noise, almost, before the proper first track of Rattled by the Rush.
Silence Kit > Summer Babe > We Dance > Spit On A Stranger > Stereo
pavement was the one i thought of as soon as i saw this thread tho.
Stereo > Summer Babe > We Dance > Silence Kit > Spit On A Stranger
Here To Fall is fucking awesome.
Unnecessary use of echo and strings and vocals like he's being tickled
Not my favourite...
Deftones
Hexagram > Feiticeira > My Own Summer (Shove It) > Swerve City > Hole In The Earth > Diamond Eyes > Bored
Came in here to do this!
Hexagram>Feiticeira>Swerve City>Diamond Eyes>My Own Summer (Shove It)>Bored>Hole in the Earth
Hexagram is MIGHTY
I can't have Hole In The Earth that far down the list
Sorry lads, I can't. Top three for me.
Fucking amazing at opening an album. Pretty much every song here is a classic.
My Own Summer > Hole In The Earth > Swerve City > Hexagram > Feiticeira > Bored > Diamond Eyes
you've done it wrong
Hexagram goes first.
feiticiera >>>>>
Animal Collective
Peacebone > Native Belle > Did You See the Words > Leaf House > Moonjock > In the Flowers > Spirt They've Gone > A Manatee Danse
I've never listened to Hollindagain though.
Did You See The Words > Leaf House >
Peacebone > In the Flowers > Moonjock > Spirit They've Gone > Native Belle > Manatee Danse
Radiohead
2+2=5 > Planet Telex > Airbag > Everything in it's right place > You > 15 Step > The Sardine Song (can't remember what it's called) > Bloom
Those first three are really DAMN good openers
obligatory ah man you are so wrong response
Everything in it's right place > 15 Step > Airbag > Bloom > Planet Telex > 2+2=5 > Packt like sardines in a crushd tin box > You
Everything in its wrong place...
wish I'd thought of that zinger
Regardless of the others, not putting You last is batshit crazy, surely
.
planet telex > everything in its right place > airbag > 15 step > 2+2=5 > bloom > packt like sardines in a crushd tin box > you
Airbag >
2+2=5 > 15 Step > Everything > Bloom > Packt Like Sardines > Planet Telex > You
(love them all though)
Planet Telex > Airbag = 15 Steps > Sardines > 2+2=5 > Everything In It's Right Place > You > Bloom
as openers
enter sandman > blackened > battery > ain't my bitch > hit the lights > fight fire with fire > fuel > frantic > that was just your life
Ain't My Bitch is dangerously high there
Blackened > Fight Fire With Fire > Hit The Lights > Battery > Enter Sandman > Fuel > Ain't My Bitch > Frantic > That Was Just Your Life
Red House Painters
Grace Cathedral Park > Have You Forgotten > Wop-A-Din-Din > Cabezon > Evil > 24
Converge
Concubine > The Saddest Day > First Light/Last Light > My Unsaid Everything > Aimless Arrow > Dark Horse
Would put First Light/Last Light first, then Heartache from No Heroes third
Otherwise sound
=w=
Tired Of Sex > My Name Is Jonas > Don’t Let Go > If You’re Wondering… > American Gigolo > Troublemaker > Memories > Beverly Hills
Always liked Maladroit better than the Green album
So Gigolo would have to be bumped up a few for me, but top two are spot on
Modest Mouse (including EPs)
Never Ending Math Equation > Dramamine > Teeth Like God's Shoeshine > 3rd Planet > The Waydown > World At Large > Worms vs. Birds > March Into The Sea > Wilful Suspension Of Disbelief > Satellite Skin
Too hard, top 4 are basically all equal
3rd planet should probably be top
but then its lightyears ahead of everything else on that record.
like I said, love all the top 4 and could barely separate them
but I have to just give it to Teeth for the manic energy and crazy riff, Dramamine for having one of the best basslines ever and Math Equation for being so perfectly rough and ready and oddly funky. All that said, 3rd Planet has probably some of my fav lyrics from Issac, so it's all equal really.
Oh, and I agree, except that on the odd melancholy days Gravity Rides Everything becomes the most beautifully sad thing to have ever been recorded
Biffy
Bodies In Flight > Glitter and Trauma > Joy Discovery Invention > Living Is A Problem >>>>> The Captain
Joy Discovery Invention > Glitter & Trauma > Living Is A Problem > Different People > Bodies In Flight (easily the worst off a genuinely great album) >>>> The Captain
The Strokes are absolutely amazing at openers
What Ever Happened > Is This It? > You Only Live Once > Machu Picchu
Is This It > YOLO > Machu Picchu > Whatever Happened
Pulp
My Lighthouse > Weeds > Love Is Blind > Joyriders > Mis-shapes > The Fear > Fairground
Never been a great track one band it seems.
Hmmm, I sort of did that objectively
but you tend to rate an album track in its context, so that list is probably a bit skewed.
Incorrect
Weeds>The Fear>Mis-Shapes>My Lighthouse>Joyriders>Love is Blind>Fairground
The Fear is wank
Blur
Beetlebum > Girls & Boys = For Tomorrow = She's So High > Tender > Stereotypes > [hidden track on Think Tank you get from starting it and hitting rewind]
Was waiting for this one...
Beetlebum > She's So High = For Tomorrow > Girls & Boys = Tender > Stereotypes > Hidden Track on Think Tank
Hmm
Beetlebum > Tender > For Tomorrow > Girls & Boys > Ambulance > She's So High > Stereotypes
I went for
Beetlebum > Girls & Boys > For Tomorrow > Tender > She's So High > Ambulance > Stereotypes
tricky...
Beetlebum > For Tomorrow > Girls & Boys > Tender > Ambulance > She's So High > Stereotypes
Elliott Smith
Roman Candle > Sweet Adeline = Needle in the Hay > Speed Trials > Son of Sam
Tool
The Grudge > Stinkfist > Vicarious > Intolerance > Sweat (from Opiate)
The 4 Album openers are monumental!
Can't really argue with that.
...unless we include the Salival odds and sods collection, in which case the live version of Third Eye that opens it would go above Intolerance, possibly level with Vicarious.
Guided By Voices
Over The Neptune/Mesh Gear Fox > A Salty Salute > Man Called Aerodynamics > Fair Touching > Hardcore UFO's > "Wished I Was A Giant" > Everyone Thinks I'm A Raincloud = My Kind Of Soldier > Teenage FBI > Old Battery > We've Got Airplanes > The Future Is In Eggs > King Arthur The Red > Laundry And Lasers > Wire Greyhounds > He Rises! (Our Union Bellboy) > Can't Hear The Revolution > Lips Of Steel > Airshow '88 > Satellite
Nice job!
i've spent too long compiling various GBV lists
it's all second nature now. Also Neptune is probably my favourite opening from any album ever
they have so many ridiculously high quality album openers
hard to decide between neptune and a salty salute but over half of these are incredible. raincloud is very underrated.
yeah, Neptune is a perfect example of Bob's amazing lyrics and how weird musically they can be at times
while Salty Salute encapsulates the other side of them just right - short, catchy, sweet and drunken. And Raincloud really is amazing, this performance always reminds me how triumphant the song is, despite some of the lyrics. And the end to it is so perfect, up there with Huffman Flying Fields for sheer fist-pump beauty
''Every beam I choose is shining alone on you
Shining alone on you, yeah!''
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pETIFwrlRg
A Salty Salute used to be my favourite GBV song, full stop
But now it's Over the Neptune. They really are great at openers. I think My Kind of Soldier is wonderful
he's said he wrote Your Name Is Wild for his daughter (one of their most under-rated tracks)
and I always listen to the chorus of Soldier as if it was sung to his son, makes me all emotional and stuff
i love that
theres loads of really cool bits in the hunting accidents book where bob explains some of his lyrics.
My attempt
Over the Neptune > A Salty Salute > Teenage FBI > My Kind of Soldier > Hardcore UFO's > "Wished I Was a Giant" > Everyone Thinks I'm a Raincloud > Wire Greyhounds > Fair Touching > Man Called Aerodynamics > We've Got Airplanes > Airshow '88 > Old Battery > Lips of Steel > The Future Is In Eggs > King Arthur the Red > Laundry and Lasers > He Rises! (Our Union Bellboy) > Can't Hear the Revolution
the new album's are pretty great, but for some reasons they all have pretty weak openers
which is odd given that that's always been such a strong point for GBV
No you're wrong
LAUNDREY AND LASERS
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Stop > Beat The Devil's Tattoo > Love Burns > Shuffle Your Feet > Took Out A Loan
If Stop
comes on in my car, I seem to end up putting my foot down without realising it. Quite ironic, really.
The Velvets
Who Loves the Sun > Sunday Morning > White Light, White Heat > Candy Says
That was... underwhelming.
Monster Magnet
Dopes To Infinity > Melt > Crop Circle > Pill Shovel > Slut Machine > Cyclops Revolution > Hallucination Bomb > 4-Way Diablo
Death Cab For Cutie
The New Year > Title Track > Bixby Canyon Bridge > Marching Bands Of Manhattan > Bend To Squares > Home Is A Fire > Steadier Footing
I think I agree
I love Steadier Footing though
same, it's just that it'd sound better as an interlude than an opener IMO
If The Photo Album had have opened with A Movie Script Ending then this list would be rather different
The National (including EPs)
Secret Meeting > Fake Empire > Terrible Love > Beautiful Head >
fuck dis
Wasp Nest > You've Done It Again Virginia > Cardinal Song
I'd go
Fake Empire > Secret Meeting >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Wasps Nest > Beautiful Head > Terrible Love > Cardinal Song > Virginia
Sleater Kinney
One Beat>The Fox>Call The Doctor>Dig Me Out>Ballad of a Ladyman>Start Together>Don't Think You Wanna
nah
Start Together>The Fox>Dig Me Out>One Beat>Call the Doctor>Ballad of a Ladyman>Don't Think You Wanna
This is a hard one
Start Together is one of the best album openers ever, One Beat is weird and loopy, Dig Me Out is fierce. But I think The Fox gets it, just for the little half-second of feedback before the song kicks in, twice as loud as anything they'd done before. Instantly says, everything is different now.
As for the rest of the list, no idea.
AGREED SO HARD.
I love that about The Fox. It just DETONATES.
Oceansize (+EPs)
One out of nONE>Charm Offensive>Part Cardiac>Commemorative___T-shirt>Legal Teens>I am the Morning
Commemorative needs bumping at least 2 places.
Nah, I thought about it for ages
so I'm definitely right. One out of nONE and Part Cardiac are NUTS, and Charm Offensive is a brooding, buiding, wonderful thing. Trust me on this one.
assuming you meant bumping up
and you don't just really dislike it!
fucking hell Oceansize is hard to do this for
Accepting that Legal Teens has to be last, I think I find myself in the frankly bizarre position of putting Charm Offensive second-last when it's quite obviously a great song
The rest are joint-first, don't care. Oceansize were a ludicrously strong 'first track' band - to the extent where Part Cardiac is the only great song on its album but still manages to reach all-time heights
where's barnaby, hardly working?
It's in the "oops" category
But it's good, so would be after Everyday
Sufjan Stevens (excluding Christmas EPs and The BQE)
Concerning the UFO Sighting near Highland, Illinois > Flint (For the Unemployed and Underpaid) > Futile Devices = The Avalanche > All Delighted People (Original Version) > All the Trees of the Field Will Clap Their Hands > > We Are What You Say >>>>>>>>> Year of the Asthmatic Cat/Monkey
Yeah, he's a bit good at album openers.
New Order
Age Of Consent > Regret > Love Vigilantes > Fine Time > Crystal > Paradise > Dreams Never End > Who’s Joe?
Wilco
Misunderstood > I Am Trying To Break Your Heart > At Least That's What You Said > Art of Almost >Either Way > Can't Stand It > I Must Be High > Wilco (The Song)
At Least That's What You Said > I Am Trying To Break Your Heart > Misunderstood > Art of Almost > Wilco (The Song) > Either Way > I Must Be High > Can't Stand It
Also kinda love this cover of Break Your Heart, very ramshackle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHl1NJ1PBeA
Wilco are really, really good at opening tracks
I Am Trying To Break Your Heart > Art Of Almost > Can't Stand It > Misunderstood > At Least That's What You Said >>> Either Way > Wilco (The Song)
really tricky...
Misunderstood > At Least That's What You Said > Art Of Almost > I Am Trying To Break Your Heart > Can't Stand It > I Must Be High > Either Way > Wilco (The Song).
My Bloody Valentine (hoping to be obsolete by the end of this week)
Only Shallow > Soft As Snow (But Warm Inside)
Only Shallow > She Found Now > Soft as Snow (But Warm Inside)
;D
:-)
I was waiting for someone (else) to do this - can't keep bumping my own thread!
OASIS
D'Yer Know What I Mean > everything else.
Err, I think you'll find that's Rock'n'Roll Star > everything else.
Belle & Seb
The Stars of Track and Field > Step Into My Office, Baby > The State I Am In > It Could Have Been a Brilliant Career > Act of the Apostle > I Didn't See It Coming > I Fought In a War
YOU SIR ARE CORRECT
on the first one. would have made It Could Have... second best. strange that my ranking accords with the order in which I got their albums.
would've put 'I Fought in a War' higher, I think
Love that song.
"The state that I am in" wins
But...but...
The State I Am In > The Stars Of Track And Field > I Didn't See It Coming > Act Of The Apostle > Step Into My Office, Baby > It Could Have Been A Brilliant Career > I Fought In A War
knew you'd do this
The State I Am In > The Stars of Track and Field > Act of the Apostle > Step Into My Office, Baby > It Could Have Been A Brilliant Career > I Fought In A War > I Didn't See It Coming
Beastie Boys
Jimmy James > Sure Shot > Rhyming and Stealing > Ch Check it Out > To All The Girls > Make Some Noise > B for My Name
The Cure
Open (ooh controversial) > Plainsong > In Between Days = One Hundred Years = 10:15 Saturday Night > Let's Go To Bed > The Kiss > A Reflection = The Holy Hour > Shake Dog Shake > Everything post-Wish
oh boy
ONE HUNDRED YEARS > Shake Dog Shake > Want > Plainsong > The Kiss > 10:15 Saturday Night > Open > The Holy Hour > Lost > Out Of This World > A Reflection > In Between Days > Underneath The Stars
I gave The Cure about 10 seconds thought and then realised how impossible it is
I mean, Inbetween Days is one of the greatest songs ever, but I just doesn't have any of the hallmarks of what I consider to be the best Cure album openers.
It's a tough band to do no doubt about it:
The Kiss > Inbetween Days > Plainsong > Open > 10:15 Saturday Night > The Holy Hour > Lost > Shake Dog Shake > Out of this world > Want > Underneath the stars.
I'm not gonna count Japanese Whispers as an album, think that's all of them. It's a tough shout though, a part of me even thinks things like Lost & Holy Hour on certain days could be the top of that list.
blonde redhead
Luv Machine > 23 > Elephant Woman > I Am There While You Chock Me > Here Sometimes > I Don't Want You > Equally Damaged
darn it
Luv Machine > 23 > Elephant Woman > *Kazuality > I Am There While You Chock On Me > Here Sometimes > I Don't Want You > Equally Damaged
If counting the Eps
in Particular would be 2nd and Messenger 4th
What the fuck is Equally Damaged doing on Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons?
I mean, In Particular is their best song by a zillion miles and here it doesn't get a look in because of a 40s dull intro track.
true - kind of why i mentioned the ep's
Aesthetically within its context as an opener equally damaged is okay, just awful for this thread. melody of.... And ...inexpressible would be my joint top album wise.
R.E.M.
Harborcoat > What's the Frequency, Kenneth? > Radio Free Europe > Drive > Finest Worksong > Radio Song > Begin the Begin > Pop Song 89 > How the West Was Won... >>> Feeling Gravitys Pull > Living Well is the Best Revenge > Airportman >>>>>>>> Discoverer > Leaving New York > The Lifting
My take is...
Begin The Begin > Finest Worksong > Feeling Gravitys Pull > Wolves, Lower > What's The Frequency, Kenneth? > Radio Free Europe > Drive > Harborcoat > Radio Song > Pop Song 89 > Living Well Is The Best Revenge > How The West Was Won And Where It Got Us > Airportman > The Lifting > Discoverer >>>>> Leaving New York
it seems i like their '80s openers a lot
Begin The Begin > Feeling Gravity's Pull > Finest Worksong > Harborcoat > Radio Free Europe > What's The Frequency Kenneth > How The West Was Won > Drive > Living Well Is The Best Revenge > Wolves, Lower > Pop Song 89 > Discoverer > Radio Song > The Lifting > Airportman > Leaving New York
Harborcoat ftw, definitely
think people are being a bit harsh on their late openers, I probably like all of them more than those poppy mid-period ones (even if the albums behind them aren't so hot)
Man, what a band.
Modest Mouse
Dramanine > Teeth Like God's Shoeshine> Neverending Math Equation> 3rd Planet> Horn Intro> March Into The Sea > Worms Vs Birds
3rd Planet = Dramamine > The World At Large >>>> Everything Else
3rd Planet = The World at Large = Teeth Like God's Shoe Shine = Never Ending Math Equation = Dramamine = Worms vs. Birds > March into the Sea
They are fucking incredible at openers.

The Queen Is Dead > Headmasters Ritual > Panic > A Rush and A Push > William > Reel Around the Fountain
(not sure if Hatful of Hollow and The World Won't Listen count as albums though)
The Headmasters Ritual > William, It Was Really Nothing > Reel Around the Fountain > The Queen is Dead > A Rush and a Push > Panic
The Queen is Dead 4th best?
You must be having us on....
William doesn't really count, so third best.

Summer > Hunted By a Freak > White Noise > I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead > Yes! I Am a Long Way From Home > Auto-Rock > Superheroes Of BMX > Sine Wave > Black Spider > Punk Rock:
opinion's and that....
but I'm not having Yes! I Am a Long Way From Home at #5
U mad bro.
Punk Rock last ...
a typo, surely
Punk Rock is barely a song
Yes! has never really done it for me. Favourite album, just not massively into the opener. Jim Morrison is the only song on Hawk I like, and it's mostly there because it is incredible live
but it's so pretty, and add Iggy given one of the best speeches about music ever recorded ...
Queens of the Stone Age
Regular John > Feel Good Hit of the Summer > Millionaire > Turnin' on the Screw > This Lullaby
Simples
Stick Millionaire at the top of that list and you're spot on
From Out of Nowhere
Land of Sunshine > We Care A Lot > We Care A Lot > Collision > Get Out
Head Like A Hole
the rest of them.
Mr Self Destruct runs it very close...
Nine Inch Nails deserve more than this...
Head Like A Hole > Mr Self Destruct > Wish > 1,000,000 > Somewhat Damaged > The Beginning Of The End > The Way Out Is Through > All The Love In The World
with the caveat of excluding short instrumental openers under 2 minutes, missing Ghosts I-IV (too many bits, all instrumental) and discarding remixes (while retaining Broken as a mini-album rather than EP)...
I agree but I couldn't wade through it last night
and I also struggled with the EPs etc. I don't think you can exclude the short openers though. Playing fast and loose with the rules here. Esp Pinion - it's one 6th of the EP (or 8th depending on format).
PS I really like All The Love In the World as an album opener. Shame about the album taht follows, sort of, but it's a good way in.
I didn't really come up with rules, but some of the other posts do/don't include EPs
TBH, that was what put me off doing NIN in the first place. I think because he often hits the 'proper' songs at full volume early in his albums he used short instrumentals to soften the hit (odd choice for someone who came up with the video for Happiness In Slavery, but hey).
Björk
Army of Me > Human Behavior > Hunter > Hidden Place > Earth Intruders > Moon > Pleasure Is All Mine
Pleasure Is All Mine is BRILLIANT
and Earth Intruders is awful.
Thusly:
Pleasure Is All Mine > Hidden Place > Army Of Me > Hunter > Human Behaviour > Moon > Earth Intruders.

The Recognition Scene > Alpha Incipiens > The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton > Tallahassee > 1 Samuel 15:23 > Wild Sage > Jaipur > New Britain > Slow West Vultures > You or Your Memory> Sax Rohmer 1 > Pure Milk > Hello, Old Rabbit > The Garden Song > Then the Letting Go > Amy aka Spent Gladiator 1 > Damn These Vampires > Running Away with What Freud Said
i'll do the ones I've heard...
The Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton > Tallahassee > Sax Rohmer #1 > You Or Your Memory > Alpha Incipiens > Cubs In Five > Slow West Vultures > New Britain > Amy aka Spent Gladiator 1 > Damn These Vampires > Wild Sage

that's better
Smashing Pumpkins
To Sheila > The Everlasting Gaze > Cherub Rock > Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness > I Am One
(Would probably chuck Glass in before Cherub Rock)
Crazy. Cherub Rock is a monster
Cherub Rock > I Am One > Quasar = The Everlasting Gaze = Glass > Doomsday Clock > To Shiela >>>>>>>>>> Mellon Collie
You both missed Soothe
from pisces. if you're going to inc. Machina II Pisces should be in there def.
we could get quite picky and separate the two sides of mellon collie which brings where boys fear to tread into play, in which case
Cherub Rock > I Am One > Where Boys Fear to Tread > Soothe > To Sheila > Glass > Quasar > Everlasting Gaze > Mellon Collie
I thought about Soothe
but it's a compilation, whereas I thought Machina II was a straight out studio album (albeit not released in a conventional way)?
The fact that there's 2 discs to MCIS is a big part of the reason why I listen to it so infrequently that I couldn't have told you what the opening tracks are without having looked it up.

I'm counting EPs as well as albums, but that seems fair, as they only have 3 albums, and all their album/EP openers are great.
so much love for Star Slight <3
Gotta say there are some very questionable choices going on in this thread.
Beck
The Golden Age > Sexx Laws > Loser > E-Pro > Orphans > Devil's Haircut > Pink Noise (Rock Me Amadeus) > Elevator Music > He's A Mighty Good Leader > Cold Brains
cold brains is probably my favourite beck song!
mine would be: cold brains > devil's haircut > the golden age > orphans > sexx laws > elevator music > loser > e-pro > pink noise > he's a mighty good leader
thank fuck! yes, cold brains is my #1 beck song too
That's cool.
I think it's a good thing when someone can see something special in a song that I can't. A lot of songs on Mutations just don't do anything for me. I probably need to go back and give it some careful attention. Enjoyed compaing rankings, but I'm surprised by Orphans being higher in your estimation than Sexx Laws!
yeah absolutely!
thats interesting, i guess thats bound to happen with someone with as varied a body of work as beck's. mutations is probably my favourite! yeah i love orphans, modern guilt was the album that got the 14 year old me into beck so i'll always have a great fondness for it, sexx laws is really awesome tho, especially the banjo solo. apart from that and debra and a couple others i found midnite vultures kinda hard to appreciate as a whole.

Brave man
And great choices. Young Americans and Five Years are my personal faves
Impressive
I'm really in no position to comment since I haven't even heard quite a few of these... but Fantastic Voyage should be higher.
Dinosaur Jr
Little Fury Things > Almost Ready > Freak Scene > Don't Pretend You Didn't Know > Feel the Pain > Pieces > The Wagon > Out There > Forget The Swan > I Don't Think
little fury things is the best.
Little Fury Things > Freak Scene > Almost Ready > The Wagon > Out There > Pieces > Forget The Swan > I Don't Think > Don't Pretend You Didn't Know
shame the recording of Swan is so weak
it kicks ass the way they do it now
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6WLkyxySA0
mane freak scene is like their signature song
i love little fury things but freak scene should be top of the list
Freak Scene was the song that got me into them
but I was listening to it the other day and the production lets it down a little bit, in my opinion.
yeah, when compared to how in-your-face YLAOM is
almost anything else would sound a bit weedy

The Mercy Seat > Tupelo > Do You Love Me > Into My Arms > Get Ready For Love > Muddy Water > Papa Won't Leave You Henry > As I Sat Sadly By Her Side > Your Funeral, My Trial > Foi Na Cruz > Lyre of Orpheus > Dig Lazarus Dig > Song of Joy > Avalanche > Wonderful Life
The Fall, 70s and 80s
The Classical > Psykick Dancehall > Lay Of The Land > New Big Prinz > Middle Mass > Frightened > ROD > Joker Hysterical Face > Pay Your Rates > Eat Y'self Fitter > Mansion > Frenz
Sonic Youth
Schizophrenia > Teenage Riot > Intro/Brave Men Run > Tom Violence > The Empty Page > 100% > (She's in a) Bad Mood > Free City Rhymes > Reena > The Burning Spear > Becuz > Contre le sexisme > Winner's Blues > Pattern Recognition > Dirty Boots > Sacred Trickster
dirty boots and pattern recognition are insanely low
particularly given dirty boots is one of the only good songs off Goo *OPINIONS*
otherwise you're pretty spot on though
There's something a bit too cheesy about Dirty Boots
though maybe my opinion has been twisted by its quite-naff video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XdYnh729IQ
American Music Club
Firefly>Why Won't You Stay>Gratitude Walks>Big Night>Room Above The Club>Here They Roll Down>All My Love>Fearless>Ladies And Gentlemen
god, that was really hard - especially the first three
mclusky/future of the left
Lightsabre Cocsucking Blues > Arming Eritrea > Without MSG I Am Nothing > Sheena Is A T-Shirt Salesman > The Lord Hates A Coward > Joy
I'd have Lord and Without top 3 with Arming Eritrea
Bloody love those 3 tracks
Why? inc. EPs
Crushed Bones > The Vowels Pt.2 >> Miss Ohio's Nameless > Early Whitney > These Hands > Sod in the Seed > Jonathan's Hope > Ferriswheel
Depeche Mode
Barrel of a Gun > World in My Eyes > Leave in Silence > Never Let Me Down Again > Black Celebration > New Life > Something to Do > I Feel You > Dream On > A Pain That I’m Used To > Love in Itself > In Chains
I Feel You at No 8!! One of my faves.
I find it a bit pompous
The moment DM started writing music for the stadiums they'd accidentally found themselves playing in. But admittedly a lot better than what they're doing these days.
This pretty much sums up how I feel about them, and that track, too. If they hadn't been so bloody brilliant up to SOFAD I wouldn't care, mind.
PJ Harvey
To Bring You My Love > Rid Of Me > Let England Shake > Angelene > The Life And Death Of Mr Bad Mouth > Big Exit > The Devil > Oh My Lover
British Sea Power
Men together today > All in it > Ended on an oily stage > Who's in control < Man of Aran
Talking Heads including live albums
Born Under Punches > I Zimbra > Psycho Killer (SMS) > Burning Down The House > Thank You For Sending Me An Angel > Blind > New Feeling (Name of this Band) > Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town > And She Was > Love For Sale
Brand New
Sowing Season (Yeah) > Tautou > Vices = The Shower Scene
Sowing Season > Vices > The Shower Scene > Tautou
Interpol
Untitled > the rest
Untitled = Pioneer to the Falls
> other Interpol songs
Untitled > Pioneer To The Falls > Success > Next Exit
When I did it properly that's the order I came up with
But on balance, I agree with the left side of Hexagram's equation above...
Next Exit is fucking AWESOME
However, yeah, Pioneer to the Falls is absolutely fucking incredible, and totally one of their best songs, or one of the best songs by almost anyone. I don't know what it is, but I adore that track.
I agree SO HARD on Ohm. That song is one of the best I've heard in YEARS, forget about opening a record.
Elbow
Station Approach > Ribcage > Any Day Now > The Birds > Starlings
I like Starlings the best.
Clutch
The Incomparable Mr. Flannery > You Can't Stop Progress > Mercury > American Sleep > The Elephant Riders > A Shogun Called Marcus > Motherless Child > Who Wants To Rock? > Big News I
Hmm...I'd go with
A Shogun Called Marcus > The Incomparable Mr. Flannery > Mercury > The Elephant Riders > Big News I > You Can’t Stop Progress > American Sleep > Who Wants To Rock? > Motherless Child
Not unreasonable
Admittedly I don't have Transnational Speedway League and I hadn't heard Shogun more than once before today. Is the rest of the album as good?
I do hope Earth Rocker is a bit better than their last effort.
Transnational is really good
though much more lairy and angry than their later releases. Have you heard the Impetus or Pitchfork eps? It's a bit a bit like that, with the weirdness and the humour just starting to come to the fore.
I really don't like the title track to Earth Rocker, so I'm not holding out much hope. I wish they'd go back to road testing material instead of just knocking stuff out quickly in the studio.
Explosions in the Sky (excl. The Rescue)
Greet Death > First Breath After Coma > The Birth And Death Of The Day > Last Known Surroundings > A Song For Our Fathers
Springsteen (!)
Thunder Road > Nebraska > Badlands > Racing In The Street ('78) > The E Street Shuffle > Blinded By The Light > Radio Nowhere > Lonesome Day > The Ghost Of Tom Joad > Devils & Dust > The Ties That Bind > Born In The USA > We Take Care Of Our Own > Outlaw Pete > Ain't Got You > Old Dan Tucker
I don't have Lucky Town or Human Touch, and from the sounds of things I'm not missing much.
The Avalanches
Since I Left You > ??????????
:,(
Mark Lanegan
When Your Number Isn’t Up > The River Rise > One Way Street > Gravediggers Song > Carry Home > Mockingbirds > Hospital Roll Call
Ash
Lose control > projects > walking barefoot > return of white rabbit > season > I started a fire > meltdown
Fugazi
Waiting Room > Turnover > Facet Squared > BREAK > Cashout > Do You Like Me? > Exit Only
Unwound
Message Received > New Energy > Entirely Different Matters > Dragnalus > We Invent You > Data
incidentally none of those are even close to my favourites
not a band renowned for strong openers
Black Flag
My War >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Rise Above > Slip It In > Paralyzed > Loose Nut > Family Man
i'm exaggerating but My War >>>> everything
Descendents
Myage> Everything Sux > Descendents > Talking > Enjoy > All(though if it's Coolidge as the first 'song' then in between everything sux and descendents)
Jawbreaker
pretty hard, could easily argue the case for any song being the best
The Boat Dreams From The Hill > Shield Your Eyes > Save Your Generation > Want
Eric B. & Rakim
Follow The Leader > I Ain't No Joke > Let The Rhythm Hit 'Em > What's On Your Mind
The Charlatans
Forever > Oh Vanity > You’re Not Very Well > With No Shoes > You’re So Pretty > Nine Acre Court > Blackened Blue Eyes > I Don’t Want to See the Sights > Up at the Lake > Come in No 21 > Love is Ending
Forever > most of their discography
Why did they not make more songs like this? I was so looking forward to Us And Us Only on the strength of this single, but then most of it turned out to be faux-Dylan country-rock noodle-water.
I'd put Come In No.21 higher, but this is solid.
Scott Walker
It’s Raining Today > Mathilde > The Seventh Seal > Cossacks Are > Farmer in the City > Jacky > Rawhide > Prologue/Little Things > See You Don’t Bump His Head
Sigur Ros
Intro/Svefn-G-Englar > (vaka) > Eg Anda > Gobbledigook > Takk... > Sigur Ros
Did you just sneak Gobbledigook in there
or is that for real?
First track on með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust
Hats off to them...
Intro/Svefn is bending the rules a little!
Could put Glosoli in as well by that measure
David Holmes
I Heard Wonders > My Mate Paul > Compared to What > No Man's Land
(Listen on Let's Get Killed was a skit track, ignoring it)
This is a hard one. They're all great, and all good introductions to their albums. I Heard Wonders gets it for being totally ace after an eight-year break from solo albums (much better than I expected tbh), and for DH having quite a nice singing voice after all.
Ladytron
Black Cat = High Rise > White Elephant > True Mathematics > Mu-Tron
Underworld
Juanita : Kiteless : To Dream of Love > Dark & Long > Cups > Crocodile > Bird 1 > Mo move
Hot Chip
Thieves in the night > Motion sickness > Out at the pictures > Careful > Take care
They're better at 2nd tracks...
Arab Strap
The Shy Retirer > Cherubs > Packs of three > Amor Veneris > Stink > Coming down
Soundgarden
Rusty Cage > Pretty Noose > Flower > Let Me Drown > Been Away too Long > Ugly Truth
I love Ugly Truth
I'd have it after Rusty Cage
Rusty Cage > Ugly Truth > Flower > Let Me Drown > Hunted Down (from Screaming Life/Fopp) > Been Away Too Long
Supergrass
Tales of Endurance > In It For The Money > Moving > I'd Like To Know > Za > Diamond Hoo Ha Man
LUKE HAINES (w/ The Auteurs/Black Box Recorder/solo)
13 The School Song
12 How Could I Be Wrong (Das Kapital version)
11 Suburban Morning
10 Inside The Restless Mind of Rollerball Rocco
09 Show Girl
08 Rock 'n' Roll Communique #1
07 Girl Singing In The Wreckage
06 Baader Meinhof
05 Lenny Valentino
04 The Art of Driving
03 Off My Rocker At The Art School Bop
02 The Rubettes
01 Light Aircraft On Fire
Haven't heard whatever ones I haven't included
Tom Waits
Deep breath...here we go:
Alice > Tom Traubert's Blues > Big in Japan > Ol' 55 > Heartattack & Vine > Chicago > Singapore > Lie To Me > Top of the Hill > New Coat of Paint > Bend Down the Branches > Earth Died Screaming > Somewhere > Hang On St Christopher > Misery is the River of the World > Underground > Emotional Weather Report > What Keeps Mankind Alive > Lucky Day Overture
Good job...
But how can the 'Earth died screaming' be that low down - it's almost the archetypal satanic bone percussion growl that characterises his best period...
I wouldn't say it's THE archetypal late Waits track
and I've got Big in Japan in my top 3. When I tell you that Small Change is my favourite Tom album, & Invitation to the Blues my favourite song, you'll know where I'm coming from.
I know where you're coming from.
Royal Trux
Teeth > Night To Remember > I’m Ready > Waterpark > Air > Don’t Try Too Hard > Zero Dok > Solid Gold Tooth
Haven't heard Hand Of Glory.
Curve
Already Yours > Missing Link > Hell Above Water > Chinese Burn >>>> Answers
Ten Little Girls (Pubic Fruit) > Chinese Burn > Missing Link > Already Yours > Hell Above Water
Left off Pubic Fruit because it was an EP compilation
But would have put Ten Little Girls first if I'd included it.
Already Yours = Missing Link = Hell Above Water = Chinese Burn > Answers
actually, this has just reminded me that I never got round to getting Open Day at the Hate Fest
Better than New Adventures of Curve
But tragically I lost all of the downloads bar three or four (Speedcrash being one of the ones I kept - very good).
Tim Hecker
The Piano Drop > Rainbow Blood = Music For Tundra Pt. 1 > Song Of The Highwire Shrimper > Acephale > 100 Years Ago
It has to be said he makes pretty good openers for drone - they have some real hook to them. And given that Ravedeath is probably my least favourite of those sixth, I was surprised it has the best opener.
Bob Dylan
well top 12 anyway
Like A Rolling Stone > Subterranean Homesick Blues > Girl From North Country > Hurricane > The Times They Are A Changin > Tangled Up In Blue > Blowin In The Wind > All I Really Want To Do > Jokerman > Changing Of The Guard > Duquense Whistle > Love Sick
The Kills
U.R.A. Fever > Superstition > Future Starts Slow > No Wow
Grandaddy
He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's The Pilot > Now It's On > Nonphenomenal Lineage > What Happened
^id say this is how i'd rank their albums also.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Zero > Rich = Gold Lion > Rockers to Swallow
Another New York band that are fantastic at openers (see The Strokes, Interpol, etc)
