Have you ever bought a record, gone to the counter then changed your mind because you were too embarrassed to buy it?
I did this once, but it was a long, long time ago with the New Radicals' album. I probably liked them just because they wanted a fight with Marilyn Manson, and as a teenager I fucking DESPISED nu-metal.

marilyn manson isn't nu-metal
Apologies to any nu-metal fans
I was just talking about how intolerant of people who didn't like the same musics as myselfs, I was then, not how I am now.
Am I even speaking English here..
you could just be honest
and say you were buying a Skrewdriver record.
No, honest, I meant SWERVEdriver
Not quite this
but I DID used to walk around record shops for HOURS picking up records, walking round with them, thinking i was going to buy them, then seeing something else, picking that up, nearly going to the till, then reconsidering, seeing something else, picking that up too, putting the first one down, walking around clutching the two newer finds, seeing something else, walking around holding three records, going to the till, faltering, changing my mind, and on and on and then putting everything back and picking up the first one again, then seeing something else, and keep on and on and on doing this. I cannot overestimate how long I would spend in shops doing this. With members of staff and security guards taking more and more anxious interest in me which made me panicky and more indecisive. HOURS.
oh man
me too
I still do this, frequently...
God I hope the Nottingham Fopp stays open
Just so I can continue to do this (mind I always ended up buying 2 or 3 records each time in the end).
I do exactly the same tehre!
Wandering aimlessly up and down down the aisles, palms stuffed with random CDs
It's my favourite part of buying music
I bought the first Wolf Parade album from Reveal records (RIP) purely on the basis of it's cover, same for Junior Boys' So This Is Goodbye, made them much more enjoyable as it wasn't me checking out somebody else's recommendations but just taking a risk and getting lucky.
I so miss Reveal
Yeah, it was great...
With HMV going tits up I hope that there is enough demand for smaller stores to fill the niche or else my trips into town will become a lot more boring...
Having never heard the band or song from the OP before
I can quite happily say after listening that I would feel absolutely NO shame in buying a cd with that on, its ace.
This was way back in 2000
but one of my first forays into record shops and the guy (Clitheroe is full of classic rock, middle aged bores) gave me one of those quizzical, "don't get you young uns" look saying "So.. you like New Radicals?" I decided to give it a rest.
Here's the bigger issue: I'd started paying him half the £12.99 price. All in coppers.
Plus I think I was embarrassed by the fact their lead singer
wrote for Ronan Keating
Remember being laughed at by the guy at the counter aged 10
in Virgin Megastore. For buying Ixnay on the Hombre by The Offspring. I think. Dick.
Think I bottled out of buying the Sum 41 album once around that time.
Oh yeah
nearly bottled out of buying Lovesexy on vinyl but it turned out to be one of my best purchases. Everyone thinks the sleeve is hilarious, it's sitting on our living room mantelpiece at the moment.
Yeah, I once bottled buying an album due to the sleeve.
'Battles in the North' by Immortal. There was no way I was handing that over to anyone - Google it, it's dreadful.
I think it's rather nice...
Haha, for Christmas 1999 my parents bought me this.. (nsfw)
http://www.dejkamusic.com/albums/basement_jaxx/remedy/
And also got Wip3out for the Playstation, which my mum insisted on pronouncing "whip three out."
That's pretty damn cool for a 10-year-old.
When I was that age I only listened to Oasis.
I'd rather be seen buying Antichrist Superstar than this. :D
My thoughts, kind of.
I shouldn't really have laid into Marilyn Manson on a thread that wasn't really relevant to him. Sorry, if you're listening out there, old chap. Plus, they also said they were going to beat up women (Courtney Love) and children (Hanson.)
I've never bought music in a shop
I once went to the purchase counter at MVC with Joss Stone's debut album in my hand.
There was a cute, young, indie looking temptress serving on one of the till's; typically it was her checkout that I was called too. Went over and sheepishly mumbled "Hi," then after a few seconds silence, said "this CD is not for me, I'm buying it for mum, as a present," the truth. She smiled and said "It's okay, we don't judge customers on their music taste," she then gave a jokish laugh, then complimented me on my T-shirt, I smiled and then left with a bounce in my step. Their is probably a moral to this story.
Not quite
I go into Zavvi once and found a Mercury Rev album in the sale. In my excitement of finally finding something worth buying at a reasonable price, I sauntered up to the till and shelled out my hard earned £4 (bargain-tastic!). As I walked away from the till, a burning sense of realisation hit me, as I remembered that I'd actually received that album for Christmas but one week before.
I returned, sheepishly, and somewhat embarrassed, to ask for a refund.
Took me several months to finally buy Nevermind
For some reason I thought whoever was at the tills would immediately think 'peado' as opposed to 'guy with decent music taste'.
tbh they'll prob be thinking "Why doesn't this guy already own Nevermind? Surely everybody has a copy?'
^this is what I worry about when buying classic albums
Good point.
In my defence I was buying a physical copy but had burnt a friends copy onto my computer years beforehand.
I had to take my jacket off when I bought Bend Sinister by The Fall in Fopp in London last year
cos I was wearing a Bend Sinister badge on my jacket and I didn't want the man at the till knowing I was wearing a badge of an album I was yet to own.
No.
But I have a whole lot of records I'm too ashamed to take into the Exchange shop to flog.
when i bought The Writings on the Wall by Destinys Child in 1999
i was sweating a lot and really nervous for some reason, bit embarassed maybe as i looked like a nu-metaller, nearly balked but got it done
some cracking tracks on that
less god whaffle would have been nice though
No. never
I'm not embarrassed with anything in my record collection. However, the vast majority of the music I buy know is from the artist themselves at the gigs I go to. I also buy a lot from Amazon. Been a while since I bought Music from an actual record store.
NO
GET A LIFE. MAN.
you get embarrassed to buy it AFTER you've bought it?
No. But I did once buy a Dogs Die In Hot Cars Album in a shop,
take it outside, stick it on my personal CD player, get to about 20 seconds into the second song and then immediately turn round and take it back for a refund.
That's terrible
Instant gratification culture rah rah rah.
Even if I thought an album was crap, if I had it on CD I'd usually give it a few spins and try to like it. And if I couldn't, just chalk it up to experience.
I used to do that. But then I reached a point where I wondered why I was wasting to much time trying really hard to like clearly sub-standard music.
The older I've got, the more convinced I've become that things 'growing' on you is less about some intrinsic but hard to grasp quality to the music and far more a psychological reaction to justify poor decisions to yourself by trying to find value in them retrospectively. I'd rather save time and admit to my fuck-ups.
Nah I've got really good taste
