it's not exactly the comeback anthem i was hoping for, but hopefully that's still coming.
timbo shows some signs that he's can advance on his increasingly rusty sound, but kanye would've been a much better choice for guest mega-rapper on this shit, jay struggles a bit.
Justified - Like I Love You was good, Cry Me A River was better.
FS/LS - SexyBack was good, My Love was way better.
20/20 - Suit and Tie is good, but I'm expecting the real goods to come with his next song.
Actually prefer it to the Black Album, which is just about the most overrated record in hip hop. Good selection of beats, a few bangers, and some lazy attempts at introspection. Snore. Put it 5th after RD, Blueprint, AG & Vol. 1.
What I'm trying to say is that he needs to stick to talking about slinging crack. It was all he was ever really good at... That and talking about being 'the best mayne' which has warn paper fucking thin.
Made quite a bit of sense for once I though. Other than the Bogart bit, but I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and say he was being tongue in cheek for once.
I think they're both very decent, but I get the feeling Mirrors will end up being more preferable over Suit & Tie (even though I could listen to that harp loop all day).
I like how Timabaland is referencing My Love and some of his classic Aaliyah beats with the beatboxing. What with the almost boyband 'soaring' pop chorus it makes me feel nostalgic for R&B's early '00s heyday. I love how it basically transforms into a smooth The-Dream/Kellz style slow jam past 5 minutes too.
Also it totally doesn't feel 8 minutes long. Shit flys by.
A lot of my Twitter feed seems to be taking against it for being long and boring. For me, these spacious, expansive songs were my favourite thing about FutureSex and I'm glad to see him really run with it this time. Sure, he could of gone for more variation, and I think there's definitely an argument that Timbaland isn't actually capable of producing an album of concise pop magic any more, but personally I'm really happy with this direction. 'Don't Hold the Wall' and 'Mirrors' are probably my favourites so far and the last song is really nice too.
Having said that, I'm fully aware that I'm a massive fanboy and not in the best position to view this record with any kind of objectivity. So go ahead and tell me why I'm wrong.
I bet if Prince had released Sign O' The Times in 2013 around 40% of the people listening to it would've probably binned the second disc in favour of a game of Angry Birds or some shit. Instant gratification NOWNOWNOW gangnam harlem yolo iPhone culture etc.
It's brilliant, aside from tracks 1 and 3 which are guff. The songs have room to breath, they evolve naturally, plenty of interesting ideas in there, and some wonderful tender moments too. The last tune is amazing.
I think my earlier claim of it being indistinct is fair though insofar as it's an album-album rather than a collection of songs. It's melting into itself somewhat which is no bad thing.
and i dont know why i didnt expect this to be really great because both FS/LS and Justified hold up really well as full albums that are loaded with hits and are really creative. definite prince influence even moreso than on the other records, pretty much every track was really enjoyable and well put-together.
tunnel vision especially, timbaland went in on that production.
mirrors is probably the best tho.
I was thinking about buying a physical of this but nah, its been over a year since I wasted my money on physical music media. Why start up again, you know?
its so fucking sexy, the productions is ridiculously good. the songs are wonderful. I thought the whole coda in every song thing might be a bit overkill but it just works, even on multiple tracks.
I've just finished my first listen. There were more ideas (with a 80% hit rate, at least) than most artists would manage in an entire career. The only song that didn't work (although the coda was ace) was Let The Groove Get In.
Loved the N*Sync reference at the end of Strawberry Bubblegum :D
Agreed with Vian. JT makes it sound so effortlessly sexy.
Dont Hold The Wall coda/switch-up was made just for me, A+ stuff. The whole song is great, though. Kinda vintage Timbaland but still sounds 2013 fresh. Love the ever-so-slight details that creep in the action over the last few minutes. Talkbox for life.
"fuck, we only 8.1'd FS/LS [at a time when high-ranking pop albums were super fucking rare] and then had it nestled in our top 100 of the 00s plus My Love was no.1 of the year. gotta make amends with the next JT record"
"OMG NEW JT RECORD EVERY1 GET THE BNM READY"
~ Endless stream of JT-related material over the past two months ~
"....ah. well, it's pretty good in parts. what's the lowest we can score it and still award the BPM? 8.2? Nah, better bump it to 8.4 to avoid arousing suspicion"
it just sounds too generic. the rest is pretty good though, especially don't hold the wall and tunnel vision. and the end of pusher love girl rules. i'm just a j-j-j-j-junkie for your love!
Don't hold the wall & Let the groove in were instant favourites but the singles have also grown on me massively, as has Pusher love girl. The lyrics of Strawberry bubblegum make my teeth grind a little but musically it's gorgeous. The only shit thing really is that ballad about 2/3s in and Jay-Z's pointless rap on Suit & tie.
Overall, probably just prefer Futuresexlovesounds in it's entirety, but prefer it to the debut (though obviously the debut has 2 or 3 of his best singles on it).
3... 2... 1... Ta-dah! The new MySpace
http://www.angelfire.com/nj/justinsfanpage/
i put my name in but nothing happened
i can only assume i just put myself onto the world's most comprehensive justin timberlake fan list.
SF
pressed enter too early
Meant to say that the site has a trojan according to my anti virus. Classic angelfire.
This could be good.
kinda wish timbaland and especially jay z had nothing to do with it
but it seems like they do
despite that i just can't believe that it won't be good
His new video has dropped hasn't it?Or maybe I imagined it
THOSE FLASHING LIGHTS COME FROM EVERYWHERE
put on FS/LS, still a stone cold classic
the first half's amazing
tales off really badly for me after what goes around/chop me up.
please let T.I. be on it
new album might be shit but he still knows how to take care of a guest verse, and his effort on my love automatically earns a return spot
atlantic records
for T.I. clearance!
Next up: Jordan Knight!!
JT is so much better as a comedic actor
what about joey fat one?
he's done films too
So the new track is really, really good.
No point posting a YT link cos it'll probably be broken in the morning but yeah. Well worth the wait.
I like the new song
the intro is SHIT but the rest of it is good. I love the summer trumpets on it. Not mindblowingly brilliant, but it's a nice return.
it's pretty decent
it's not exactly the comeback anthem i was hoping for, but hopefully that's still coming.
timbo shows some signs that he's can advance on his increasingly rusty sound, but kanye would've been a much better choice for guest mega-rapper on this shit, jay struggles a bit.
Hey guys, remember when Jay Z 'retired'?
*sighs*
This is really disappointing overall from where I'm sitting.
Really
Disappointing. That jay verse is painful
yeah it's good
hopefully it's more of an introduction to his re-emergence rather than the actual comeback single, if you know what i mean.
As Timberlake's history has shown us
1st single is good, but 2nd single is better.
Justified - Like I Love You was good, Cry Me A River was better.
FS/LS - SexyBack was good, My Love was way better.
20/20 - Suit and Tie is good, but I'm expecting the real goods to come with his next song.
Ha, I disagree with both of those! (the first more than the second example)
While agreeing with the sentiment that this hopefully isnt the best he has to offer anymore.
Jay Z is so fucking lazy atm
I'm beginning to hate him. Worrying.
Its not new news though,
He's been declining since before The Black Album.
Still got love for American Gangster
Actually prefer it to the Black Album, which is just about the most overrated record in hip hop. Good selection of beats, a few bangers, and some lazy attempts at introspection. Snore. Put it 5th after RD, Blueprint, AG & Vol. 1.
What I'm trying to say is that he needs to stick to talking about slinging crack. It was all he was ever really good at... That and talking about being 'the best mayne' which has warn paper fucking thin.
the black album...
...is pretty awesome. his last great statement tho, agreed.
On first listen I thought it was crap
So I expect I'll adore it in a year

WHAT WOULD HUMPHREY BOGART SAY?
This doesn't make a lot of sense now that the post above has disappeared.
But still, it's an important question.
I assume he wasn't deleted for that post.
Made quite a bit of sense for once I though. Other than the Bogart bit, but I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and say he was being tongue in cheek for once.
Ladies and Gents
http://countdown.justintimberlake.com/
He... he's back.
If the whole album's as good as this..... what a treat.
really hate this.
Do you like Robin Thicke's music?
having just googled him,
seems pretty good.
I like his dad better
yay growing pains
a bit mushy in places,
but I like it.
Hey. New song.
http://www.justjared.com/2013/02/11/justin-timberlake-mirrors-listen-now-to-new-song/
Mirrors. 8 minutes long.
Not too sure about this one on first listen either
Hmmm...
after 5.43 it's a killer
Yep.
So it's a shame that the first 5 minutes and 43 seconds are pants. :(
this is good
the intro was scary, sounded like a fucking coldplay ballad was about to kick in
it's a good song, and i enjoy the way it evolves over the 7+ minutes, but it's still missing that kick.
this is great
I think they're both very decent, but I get the feeling Mirrors will end up being more preferable over Suit & Tie (even though I could listen to that harp loop all day).
Apparently he's gonna be headlining Wireless also
100% going if that's true
I really like this one
since the first second.
I like all of this one
I think Mirrors is awesome.
Shit flys by.
i basically agree with this
except i think the production for the first half of the song is a bit too two-dimensional, which is the only problem.
Why does Timbaland do that beatboxing thing still
Immediately sounds like 2002, what a prick
So we're all listening to this, right?
http://search.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZContentLink.woa/wa/link?path=justintimberlake
strawberry bubblegum's the longest song i've ever heard
this sounds good though
i know this is pathetic but i literally can't listen to it as all one track like that
i can wait....i can wait
Yes to the first track. Dayum.
Those guitars.
First listen through
Mirrors is very much the highlight for me so far
The rest of it seems kind of, indistinct?
Just had it on in the office
Can't imagine bothering to listen to it again to be honest.
Suit & Tie - Four Tet Remix....
https://soundcloud.com/four-tet/justin-timberlake-suit-and-tie
lovely stuff
quite boring really isn't it
could do better
So am I alone in really liking this?
A lot of my Twitter feed seems to be taking against it for being long and boring. The amount of people deciding how good or bad it is halfway through one listen is mental.
The last tune is amazing.
noo track 3 is one of the stand outs for me
I'm liking it quite a lot
I think my earlier claim of it being indistinct is fair though insofar as it's an album-album rather than a collection of songs. It's melting into itself somewhat which is no bad thing.
streaming inside itunes is shit
so impressed on first listen
and i dont know why i didnt expect this to be really great because both FS/LS and Justified hold up really well as full albums that are loaded with hits and are really creative. definite prince influence even moreso than on the other records, pretty much every track was really enjoyable and well put-together.
tunnel vision especially, timbaland went in on that production.
mirrors is probably the best tho.
i think that song + reprise formula gets a bit tired when it's used on every track
and it doesn't help that none of them are as good as lovestoned.
i find the lounge style tracks a bit boring
but there are really good moments scattered throughout. and tunnel vision is fantastic.
I thought you were waiting!?
oh the CD version leaked
Nice.
I was thinking about buying a physical of this but nah, its been over a year since I wasted my money on physical music media. Why start up again, you know?
this is very long
i presume the last song on this album is a cover of Body Count by the band Body Count from the album Body Count?
this album is brililant
its so fucking sexy, the productions is ridiculously good. the songs are wonderful. I thought the whole coda in every song thing might be a bit overkill but it just works, even on multiple tracks.
brilliant seems a stretch
but enjoy, by all means
According to Questlove, The 20/20 Experience Vol. 2 comes out in November and will feature 10 more songs.
http://pigeonsandplanes.com/2013/03/justin-timberlake-will-release-another-album-in-novemeber-says-questlove/
Who on earth said that Timbaland was done?!
Think it will reward repeated listens too.
Ace.
It just gets better and better with every listen
Finally digging in here.
Dont Hold The Wall coda/switch-up was made just for me, A+ stuff. The whole song is great, though. Kinda vintage Timbaland but still sounds 2013 fresh. Love the ever-so-slight details that creep in the action over the last few minutes. Talkbox for life.
P4K review is up: 8.4
Which for a chart-pop album is basically 9.0+ from them.
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/17736-justin-timberlake-the-2020-experience/
actually, I disagree
that 8.4 BNM means the following happened:
If their's shit to be smelt, I'd guess you're in the best position.
Shitty puns aside
I'd completely forgotten they gave FS/LS an 8.1!
Sorry that came across a bit dickish
(why can I not avoid arse/dick puns???)
do you genuinely believe this level of conspiracy takes place
no
I dumbed it down a bit for DiSfolk, edited the Jews out etc. too complex otherwise
I've never known P4K not to get a boner for R&B/hip-hop that's palatable for white folk.
Mirrors video is so so so good
http://youtu.be/uuZE_IRwLNI
mirrors is by far the worst song on the album
it just sounds too generic. the rest is pretty good though, especially don't hold the wall and tunnel vision. and the end of pusher love girl rules. i'm just a j-j-j-j-junkie for your love!
looks like he doesn't do don't hold the wall live,
boo.
Yeah so I'm a bit late to the party but I really, really love a lot of this record now
Don't hold the wall & Let the groove in were instant favourites but the singles have also grown on me massively, as has Pusher love girl.
