an American asks: what's the common perception of indie band Sons & Daughters in teh UK?
I don't see them mentioned much here on DiS, yet Pandora radio loves to sprinkle them liberally in all of my indie-related stations. In fact, they sort of interfere with discovering new bands as a result. So are they taken (more or less) seriously, or are they not worth talking about?

they're alright
quite pleasant. I haven't heard anything about them for about five years though, I would have presumed they'd broken up!
they had an album out in 2011
'Mirror Mirror' ... but I haven't heard anything about them since. Maybe their label is just bad with publicity?
I thought they'd split too!
That first mini-album was great.
The 'Lovers' EP from '02, or the 'Love the Cup' short album from '03?
As someone who has been to one of their 'gigs'
and bought one of their 'LPs', er...I don't really have an opinion on them.
:D
'gigs'? The quote marks have me curious.
All I remember about it is that I was surprisingly fat at the time
My belly was protruding.
That makes me sound anorexic
But there was serious overhang. This must have been around 2007. Pretty upset that you've brought it all up again to be honest.
:'D
I remember enjoying their debut
don't remember remembering them until this post though
Wait
they have HOW MANY albums? I thought they only had the one
at least three and an EP, that I'm aware of
I honestly thought they were a band that released 'The Gift'
and disappeared, I was very wrong.
Well, that's pretty much what I thought when I first heard them
It seems they are still in the running for one-hit-wonder status.
Have nearly all of their stuff
Not a band I listen loads to but some of that first full LP and EP still sounds great and they're a very good live act.
yeah
Saw them a few times in 2011. They were very good, but had tiny crowds.
I thought they are very good still, but not really on the radar for most people.
I prefer A Country Practice
They've split up now, did so towards the end of 2012.
I think it was due to a period of inactivity and they just wrapped things up in a fairly undramatic way.
ah, thanks - that explains why none of us knew this.
I remember the Repulsion Box getting really good press
and it still sounds great now.
This Gift, while jangly and tuneful and good, got mixed reviews, many focusing on the curse of getting Bernard Butler to produce you, and sucking all the rawness from your sound. I saw them about the time of that coming out, supporting Battles weirdly at a BBC thing at Koko. Picked up Love the Cup second hand and didn't get Mirror Mirror. The end.
Excellent summary. Consider my question answered!
I like them
but there are better bands doing a similar sort of thing.
Still holding a massive grudge that
I met my hero Josh Homme when S&D supporting QOTSA was called off (7/7 bombings). Fuck you, bombs.
wait, so you met Homme because the show was cancelled? PLEEZ EGGS PLAIN.
i really liked them
Under rated I think. Lesser bands have done better because of publicity, I guess if anything they were unlucky to be on domino who were most likely blowing all their cash on franz ferdinand and arctic monkeys. Very good live but around the last album they hardly toured.
La Lune
Goes on EVERY MIXTAPE I make, without fail. Tune.
An excellent first album. A poor second one. Average live.
Nah...
..I saw Sons and Daughters live a good few times and they were almost always fantastic. Best show was supporting the Delgadoes in Glasgow before they sadly broke up. Just one of these bands that deteriorated in musical quality as time went on, sadly. Didnt even bother with the last CD, though it was sad that they didn't get any attention at all with it.
smaller Glasgow bands sometimes seem to get a bit lost to the rest of the UK
like Zoey Van Goey for instance, they could have easily been Allo Darlin'-sized if they'd been based in London or Manchester.
I saw Sons and Daughters at Bowlie 2 in 2010. They were alright.
Allo Darlin' sized!
There's just no ambition anymore :p
Those obscure brtish indie rock bands inspire to become slightly less obscure, but ultimately still obscure, indie band
at least they'd get to do it as a day job!
That johnny cash song they did was pretty excellent
nothing else they did after that matched up to it

but, but...

LOUD.
I loved the first one, that ryanwilson linked to
thought some of their other stuff was alright too. underrated, yeah. very Scottish.
I liked them. Have their first two albums but haven't listened to them for a couple of years. Quite good live.
the singer won vegetarian of the year once i think.
I'm not UKish, but I like them
Only have the first and latest albums, mind.
