DiStape Club - January (new year, fresh start)

I understand that quite a few people are feeling rather disillusioned about DiStape club what with not receiving mixtapes/feedback but I recommend sticking with it because when it works it's lovely.
I'm going to start pairing people up for January now and I'm being fairly liberal with cutting people out. If I've gotten a PM from someone saying they haven't received a mix from you YOU'RE OUT - also I'm going to have a quick check through the last couple of months' threads to see if people have posted at all; if they haven't THEY'RE OUT TOO.

So anyway - January's theme is NATURE. Be as loose with it as seems reasonable, and (just a personal preference) don't think that the theme means just picking songs with nature/nature-related stuff in the name because that's lame.

If you want to join in with DiStape club just PM me with your address and I'll add you in.

i understand wanting to get rid of timewasters but that's a bit severe what with it being the holidays and all. people have a lot on their plates this time of year.

(i haven't sent mine out yet, plan on doing when i'm back at work (i'm an ok person))

- Yeah I'm not cutting out everyone that hasn't sent a mix so far
  
  In more detail, the current system is if someone hasn't received a mix (as in if they've PMd me, I have no other way of knowing) and the person that's supposed to send it hasn't posted in the threads and/or has a suspiciously low post count then I'm cutting them out (they can send me a PM to opt back in at a later date though anyway). I'm cutting anyone out who hasn't sent a mix for November, obviously.
  
  It's difficult to find a line between being too severe and cutting a few people out unfairly and not being severe enough and some people not receiving mixes. I figure the more severe approach is kind of fairer because you can always PM me to ask to be put back in whereas people that don't receive mixes just don't receive them, you know?

    So, if people haven't received the Space mix by 14th January or the Nature mix by the 14th Feb then you can start chasing and then if you don't get any response a week later, cut them out.
    
    I haven't got a November mix or a December mix, but I don't expect the latter to arrive until the 14th, by my own standards. Dunno why no November. Maybe I wrote my address wrong! ha. it could happen.
    
    NB. I am going to finish my Space mix this week, should be in the post on Friday or Saturday.

      I think 14th is quite a good cut off date.

OK, revised plan

I'll pair people that have sent mixes up early on and then come the 14th I'll pair stragglers up and cut the non-senders out. I just don't want that to mean there's like a lag or whatever. Maybe I need to just take everything less seriously; I just don't want people to be sad :'( </3

  I wanted to sit down and listen to it in one go. Totally loved it, especially the Fu Manchu. I've had them mentioned to me a few times before but never listened. Saturn III is great. Nerf Herder was brilliant too. Enjoyed the Shatner and Nimoy tangent. Would have preferred Mars, Bringer of War rather than Uranus, but thats because it's possibly the greatest 5/4 build up ever. I'm just being picky though. Many thanks shucks!

I got my space mix last week

At least I think it was last week...anyhow, I haven't had time to listen to it yet but I just wanted to give props for the awesome cover art. I love it. I also hate it because it made my own look more like a piece of crap than it already did, but y'know.

I received mine my Nature Mix from hanshotfirst today.

I woke up this morning thinking today was going to be a shit day. Blackpool beaten last night, saying good bye to my beloved PS3 this morning followed by 8 hours at work tonight.

NO, a jiffy bag landed on my doorstep this morning (is there a better thing to come through letter boxes than jiffy bags??)

Highly amusing artwork. Half way through disc 1. Already got something to thank you for. For some reason I had always imagined mewithoutYou would sound like me vs. hero or you me at six for whatever reason. Pleased to report that they are very good, will be checking them out further.

Will post further thoughts and track ratings maybe tomorrow.

My nature mix will be going out this weekend. Making CDs is the only, only time I hate that I use Spotify exclusively now.

i received my SPACE MIX, MANY THANKS MCCLASH! I'm listening now, it's great, and the little sleeve art is brilliant :D (also I put on the xx track on my mix too) Thanks!

And in regards to the NATURE MIX, I received that one the other day, but still haven't listened yet. Thankyou keith! I look forward to listening to "A story about camping" after this CD. (also great album art btw aha)

'No Pussy Blues' by Grinderman got cut on the final mix after the Mrs vetoed it for being too tenuously about nature. I thought a song about a middle aged man who had lost his cat was perfect nature material.

Got your nature mix in the post this morning. The packaging is insanely nice - I'm very impressed that you designed a cover and printed it out and even *printed on the CD!*. Amazing, mine pale in comparison. I just got in and am looking forward to it soundtracking my afternoon of playing Oblivion whilst looking out of the window at the abysmal weather.

Looks bad that the past 5 replies to this thread have been me...

Anyway, to the feedback.
I was already a fan of Barn Owl and Attenuated beforehand but they were welcome nonetheless, High Wolf I had tried to listen to before but it didn't stick then for some reason - the song in this mix was ace though and really set the tone for the rest of it. I've had a White Rainbow rip lying around in iTunes for ages but haven't gotten round to listening to it - that song was flipping amazing though (definitely my favourite of the 6 I hadn't heard) so I'll be revisiting them. Basically it was super good, very well mixed together & nice and chilled so I imagine I'll listen to it a fair bit whilst writing essays etc.

- Marquee Moon is probably my favourite song so I'm glad to have any excuse to listen to it. Same goes for Twilight at Carbon Lake but with marginally less enthusiasm. Anyway, I really enjoyed it, it flowed really well, and it was nice to get your note explaining how you'd put it together and stuff. Thanks again!

Spicer: I'm going to listen to yours tomorrow morning but I want to give you ultimate kudos for your packaging - I think it might be my favourite yet. It's so... big.

Finally got my tracklisting sorted for this month. Not gonna lie, it's pretty downtempo.

Guess it's winter or something. Although my space one (which I don't know if anybody ever received) was the opposite, so maybe not.

Anyway, gonna hopefully burn it off tomorrow maybe and post it this weekend. Due to a glitch in the matrix, the guy I'm sending it to is the maker of the first one I got, so if that was you - WATCH OUT.

As I said, I'm a big, big fan of your packaging. CD-wise I'm also a fan - I really liked the segue between the sample of the guy counting down to blast-off & FlyLo. Veyr nearly put James Pants on my CD so was nice to hear Mayer Hawthorne & the man himself. Love BoC and Gang Gang Dance too. Have to admit I HATED the Bearsuit song. Loved Satellite of Love which for some reason I had never heard before. Big fan of the transition between Blur & Caribou and a big fan of that Caribou song in general (it was on my space mix too in fact). All in all a bloody good mix, thanks!

  I was a bit worried when you still hadn't received it that you wouldn't get to see the packaging. Haha fair enough on the Bearsuit, I knew it could go either way but thought that was in the spirit of mix tapes so I kept it on. I was pleased with those transition, I really wanted to mix them in properly but I didn't really have the capabilities to do so.

I'm really enjoying this, keep it up everyone. It's great to come home to a new CD from someone every month.

So how close are we to setting a theme for February?

I'm getting an itch to start compiling a new mix and February is nearly upon us. I know some people are still waiting on CDs - I never received a Space mix - but time waits for no man and all that...

Theme for february-wise

I was thinking 'love' (what with valentines day), 'myths' (suggestion from another thread I think), 'time' or 'science'. What do you guys think. I'd like to do a no US/UK music a lot but that's probably too broad - maybe we could just say bonus points for not including any US/UK music but working within whatever the theme is if you know what I mean.

sorry for the delay. my cd drive has been playing up for a while (i had to send my space mix by mediafire in the end) but i have managed to find out what the problem was. your cd will be sent tomorrow.

also thank you very much to paleeyedbadger for the 'birds' themed mix. really, really loved it. the packaging was ridiculous and wicked and the selection was awesome. highlights were actress, teebs, apparat, BoC, the caretaker, pj harvey and the cornershop cover of the best beatles song. cheers!

additionally, big up to sidrrrs for the space mix which came in the post around the same time. i think i only had heard one or two tunes on the entire playlist beforehand, amazing stuff. loved the ennio morricone ending. nice one!

Sorry to Mcclash, lightcyclerider and brainfeedr for my lack of replies - I've been away on holidays with no internet so haven't been able to listen to your cds or reply to comments. Back now though, plugged in and fully operational.

I should have waited until I had the tracklists to hand before I started this reply, but nevermind. Here goes:

Mcclash - your Names mix is really good, I enjoyed that a lot. a few things I hadn't heard before, some great combinations of tracks. Most enjoyable.

Lightcyclerider - your Nature mix is amazing (sorry mcclash). It felt like it stuck to the theme to me, for the most part. I like the Japanese theme. I knew about 2 of the artists on it so it was a whole learning experience. That Perfume track is incredible - there's about 5 more that I 5-starred in itunes, but I haven't written in the track names. The artwork is nice too. funny.

Brainfeedr - I'm very pleased that you liked the Nature mix I sent. I was worried that I would be the only person into Nu-Age drone enough to enjoy an hour of it, and I felt like I should have written more in my note to explain what I was about to subject you too. I think I did well to restrain myself from including a 20 minute Dolphins Into The Future track. That was my favourite one to make so far, so yeah, really glad you liked it.

Is there a February thread yet? What's the theme?

        I'd like to hear your jap-rock one. will you soundcloud it? I was going to put mine up, started with my Names mix but the Soundcloud gatekeeper took it down for copyright infringement. Whoops. Very clever of them to be able to pick waveforms out of mixes though, I was impressed. But scared. very very scared.

        I'll give it a go but this one's fairly straight - it's basically a playlist not a mix -
        
        so the old waveform recogniser will probably catch me out. It is pretty impressive technology, I wonder how big their database of songs is? Surely some songs have similar waveforms but are totally different songs?

  Glad you've been enjoying it. The Terrorball/Perfume remix album is free from the Terrorball bandcamp. He/she (?) remixes some other classic J-Pop too. Its all fizzy electro fun.
