So, Foo Fighters have always had the stench of dadrock about them
that cheesy MOR thing which has seen them reach heights Nirvana would have been unlikely to have reached or maintained properly.
But because of Smiling Dave's history of being in that punk band that time and having built up a fair swell of goodwill by being in Nirvana, Foo Fighters are the cheery face of blandly inoffensive pop-metal that it's still cool to like.
I place Foo Fighters alongside the following acts;
Dire Straits
Chris Rea
Coldplay
The Eagles
Santana

There does need to be a name for music
in which the badn can really play, and rock, yet haven't written any songs.
math-rock?
well then you're a cunt
cheers.
OP speaks da troof
I usually put them alongside Status Quo
what's their Hotel California then
i.e. atmospheric classic that both defines and transcends them
Everlong
Hey, Johnny Park!
Dire Straits - yeah, agree on this one.
Chris Rea - sweet nostalgia for me.
Coldplay - Coldplay are dadrock? U mad?
The Eagles - Don't know who this is
Santana - That one song is brilliant.
What?
The Eagles - Don't know who this is
You're trolling, right?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYf4kqnAWos
Not particularly.
Don't think I've heard that before.
!
Coldplay tick all the right boxes for dadrock
But most dads probably think they're lentil-worshipping nonces.
Does this mean that The Colour and Shape can be my guilty pleasure?
I always wanted one of those!
If White Limo is dad rock then I'm very happy to be a dad.
Pop Metal?
FFS.
I'm sorry but i'm also really struggly to see your point as well. All of the bands you have compared them to are fantastic bands in there own rights and all completely diferent to each other. They're also 5 of the biggest bands of all time so i'd say Dave should be pretty damn proud of himeself from being in a genre and generation defining band and then being able to make his own band into one of the biggest off all time without selling out.
``...without selling out``
Haha, good one.
explain how he has
ah good.
A selling out argument.
And it concerns Dave Grohl. Even better.
In this argument WhiteLightWhiteCity will be taking the role of 'Courtney Love'. Are you good to go or do you need some time in makeup first?
This is more in comparison to Nirvana in a way, which I'm probably given him undue credit for
Foo Fighters arrived fully sold out anyway, which is why I'm laughing at the notion that they have anything left to sell out on.
I'm struggling to understand who this post is aimed at and what you're trying to say.
my post?
Yes your post.
You see how obvious it is from the vertical lines down the side that I was replying to YOUR post.
Just as yours is apparently a reply to MY post. I say apparently because you then run off on some rant that seems more aptly aimed at the person who started this thread rather than me, but you aim the post at 'you', which would be 'me', thanks to how the English language works.
And then you blether on about not selling out or something which is even weirder.
Yeah Theo cause that wasn't an over the top response or anything.
Nevermind, yes my post was aimed at the original post.
I'm sorry for my blatent disregard for social board etiguette and for confusing you. I will try to not do it again.
This is the music board.
damn, got me again.
thanks. I dunno how I survive some days.
And I'm sorry you're being such a whiny bitch.
Please don't be sorry for me...honest, it's fine.
and I really couldn't give a shit about it anyway.
Now run along.
Classic Tito!
Get angry
Feigns indifference
Tries to run away
Couldn't escape!
Lucius used Identify.
Tito's Rage was disabled!
I think I must have missed something somewhere
But thanks anyway.
Proper lads, proper cheerful smiles.
(I like a lot of their songs).
They're totally Slade
They need a christmas song yet...
seen them reach heights Nirvana would have been unlikely to have reached or maintained properly.
Nirvana have sold more than three times as many albums as the Foo Fighters
I really liked the first two foo fighters albums at the time. And I still think they're generally a really good singles band.
What heights then, if not commercial
Surely not artistic.
The first four albums and the recent one all have 2-3 great songs on.
But they have a huge number of forgettable rock dross.
And then there are dull songs like Everlong that people love for some unknowable reason.
sound except i quite like the eagles
and also the first FF album is pretty decent in places
Most recent album is better than the first album.
Just putting that out there.
that may be true
but a band can only be horribly boring for so long before i stop bothering to listen to their new releases
Me too
Hey OP - nothing wrong with the Eagles mate.
nah.
not buying this.
s/t and the colour and the shape are classics of their time. might put on the latter now actually.
I really like the first 3 albums
Don't think I'd refer to any of them as classics though.
The Who Fighters?
Seems to blatantly disregard the ground-breaking nature of Santana at the time they came out...
... plus playing Woodstock off their heads on acid > anything the Foo Fighters will achieve.
Quite partial to The Eagles on a sunny Sunday morning too btw.
Who really cares?
They've made some great songs in the past, some good ones, and some I personally don't like but can see why other people would. No one is forcing you to listen to them (bingo).
all their songs are all the same
except some are fast and some are slow
BORING
Hardly relevatory
I think this thread could've legitimately been posted about 10 years ago
my dad likes all those bands
so yes
my motto
is never trust anyone who likes the foo fighters
no i wouldnt
im sticking with mine
Colplay and The Foos are more like next-generation dadrock.
It'll be dadrock when most of us are dads.
And dubstep will be the new northern soul, a semi-obscure genre to be into to make it look like you don't just listen to Radio 2 all day.
How was it retro?
Most of it was released in the 60's, and re-discovered in the 70's.
My mum likes them.
They have some good songs.
Can't believe no one in this thread has defended Dire Straits
You all need to listen to Making Movies
*Communiqué
Making Movies is a bit self-indulgent.
I don't quite get why people bum Springsteen so much and ignore Knopfler - probably Bruce never did anything country. :D
Didn't see much beef.
But stick me down on the side of the case for the defence if it goes to trial.
What is the point of these threads?
*any thread
keep reading dadrock as haddock
I bet they don't smell too bad
Whatever happened to stool-rock?
Can you still buy stools?
This is such a poor thread
and compared to some of the bland tripe that is infesting the DiS top albums of 2012 - yes Chromatics, I mean you - The Foos are subversive musical revolutionaries
I agree with legendary music boarder thewarn
I guess this means I also agree with shucks.
Raises thy devil horn hands and begins to nod head repeatedly!

Poor whiny baby boy shot himself ...
the insignificant one hit it & quit it. Grohl decided to keep on keepin on, & even though I don't like Foo Fighters, at least he's doing what he wants. Does he "cash in" on past glories? Fuck You, McCartney's singing with his band! McCARTNEY!!! What are YOU doing?
not playing MOR pap to hordes of braying fuckwits.
how about you.
I m gonna have a go at trolling, never done it before and it looks like fun
The National are dad rock
Nah, surely not.
Dads need to keep awake so the last thing they'd need is The National.
yep im crap at trolling.
So why dont we all agree on REO Speedwagon and go home and listen to Something else.
Ridiculous thread.
I genuinely don't know where to start.
