Excellent list.
yup
Even the Quietus
managed to order their top 5!
Good thing I know all those albums on that list
:-|
i'v ehardly haedr anything new thi syear
might dig into this
...is everything alright?
except for my own list
The Quietus is always my favourite.
or Second Layer
or Dusted - but they don't do proper lists.
YAY THE PRE NEW!!!!
hello
copy me some cds please
thanks!
hello
o.k.
Record Shop lists are usually the greatest
The Norman one is ace. As is Aquarius Records. And Boomkat is always worth a look.
this is why Dusted is the coolest
Dragged into Sunlight!
That entry alone justified this whole list.
Surprised there's no Menace Ruine though. That's a bit Vatican Shadow x Alexander Tucker x Dragged into Sunlight - like nothing else
I've always assumed that they were a fairly run of the mill black metal band for some reason, but clearly I've been a massive, massive idiot.
Gonna go and check them out now based on that description.
Hmm I'm intrigued by your description of Menace Ruine
Am currently listening to cuts from their new LP as we speak, cheers for the heads up.
hope you enjoy
Salamandra is a good way in; https://soundcloud.com/profoundlorerecords/menace-ruine-salamandra
Disintegrating Grace Slick vocals over the sound of brown acid psych going black
also
surprised there was no Aluk Todolo. Cave dwelling post-metal trance BM. Elevated primitive.
Go on then, how many of these are made up?
69. Motorpsycho And Ståle Storløkken – The Death Defying Unicorn
yessssssss
:D
I don't know half of these albums, it's great!
Still, really happy Swans up there. That is one of my top 5 this year...
Thought i'd heard loads of new records this year.
WTF.
Seemed ok until they put Bish Bosch at number 2.
i've only played it through once but I found it borderline unlistenable
maybe it's just me!
C'mon!
Who's heard of even half of those bands?
The Wire/Quietus try-hard lists are boring because any "OK, I'll check out these couple" reveals just how pretentious they are.
Maybe some people like that kind of music?
Just a thought...
sorry dude
but your opinion is adrift of the quality of those lists.
p.s. I have heard of them all. Haven't heard them all, but I have read about all those albums somewhere on the web in the last 11 months.
wrath
Yeah
Because it's totally worth spending a couple of weeks' worth of thinking time, a whole year's worth of listening hours and a good few days of putting together an album of the year piece, just to impress people on the internet with 'try hard' tastes rather than highlighting music we think is actually worth listening to. Mm-hm.
(Some great stuff in the Wire's lists too)
iquitelikeradiohead and suedehead this'd this
perfect
Nice to see the Neneh Cherry / Thing album in there
A fine record. Shame it wasn't in The Wire's list.
every year this is the most interesting list
spotify link (about twenty of them aren't on there, unsurprisingly):

cool
i thought that anaal nathrakh one was embarrassing in places though, dead surprised to see it on a list nvm that high up.
I really do not get the love for that band.
Overproduced d-beat combined with cheesy symphonic bits. Rubbish.
they used to be mint tbf

/iprefertheirearlierstuff
i assume that will be
Supreme Necrotic Audnance.
it was close
but i went for humanity is cancer. that bouncy thrash riff half way through is one of my favourite things ever.
It all sounds so digital and overly polished though
Codex Necro
doesn't really. After that it starts getting shiny fairly rapidly but the demos and first album are great. Just enough machinery involved to make it sound like there is machinery involved in the annihilation of everything. which there will be, of course.
yeah i can see that but i spent a lot of time listening to strapping young lad growing up
so i might be close to immune from the immersion.
still, just having a wee listen to the new one again and jebus is ."you cant save me, so stop fucking trying" awful; bro slams, major key, emo chorus vocals. bad.
that's how I imagined it would be
kind of like the Dimmu Borgir of whatever kind of metal they started out playing.
Thanks all!
Normally a fan of the more wilfully obtuse lists
but I guess given that I've consumed more music on average this year than most, I've found myself yawning at this stuff somewhat.
The same 'out there' picks, the odd album which just plain isn't that good that we're meant to 'reconsider', the more serious half of RA's recommended list, the album that everyone else has at the top to make the rest of the list somehow seem less silly...
There's a lot of my favourite records here, but not much of a sense of fun in any of it. It's all music is SRSBSNZ, and you'll find yourself coma induced if you stick rigidly to this stuff.
So yeah, good stuff, but mix it up a little.
*than most years, not most people. that'd be even smugger that it already sounds.
i've not heard that many of these records but the ones i have heard are mostly great larks
cherry thing, motorpsycho, goat, sun araw, black breath, bo ningen, rolo tomassi. maybe all the other stuff is srs bz idk.
yeah i'm probably being a bit harsh tbh
I guess there's not that many records in there I consider an absolute party (although, yeah, obvs haven't heard a good number of them), but it's a good mix up, and it's certainly not samey.
Nah I think it's pretty fun
especially compared to The Wire list which really disappointed me this year.
I think I'm being a grump because I've not yet moved past being really impressed
to genuinely loving that Swans record. Agreed that this is preferable to The Wire list and tbf, more up my street than most others. Do wish there was a few dumb fun records (Teklife Vol. 1?) & a bit more hip hop on there though.
Year-end lists bring the worst out of all of us!
Here, listen to this and realize all is right in the world:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-w0tzbKtRuA
That's what I'm talking about
I'm the same with the Swans records
There are moments when it pummels me. And others when it leaves me cold.
Listening to the ZZ Top record right now for the first time. That's dumb and very fun. Would've thought Doran might've rated that.
Also the best thing about Quietus end of year lists is the Doran-approved quota of balls out FUN pysch rock that makes it on there
beak album is v cool.
+ 1,000,000 indie points
Fantastic list
Props to John, Luke and Rory for putting together something which is as interesting as it is validatory (think I just made that word up, but you get it). Feels like people actually picked the records they really loved rather than hitching themselves to a wagon and telling listeners that everything is ok because they were right all along.
This made me chuckle

not the coolest video
fair enough
I don't get it
Not sure what the joke is - that an electronic guy is playing on an empty stage to a half empty room? That's how it fucking goes. Joke's on all the people who miss out on great sounding shows all the time.
That he looks geeky and is playing a cheap casio? Sounds like he can do a hell of a lot with very little to me.
I like Heatsick a lot already, but I'm not biased.
the joke is the guy who played drums along to slowed down Justin Bieber live thinks Heatsick is a dweeb
oh whineyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy you're copping it from the blood puddings
I actually quite like this
:''''''''D
Heatsick fucking rocks
He absolutely destroyed at Unsound and in London at the weekend
Quite like what I've heard of Heatsick
Pretty lame live show from the looks of it, but if he had his head buried in a laptop they'd have thought it was great...
I like Heatsick a lot
also check out a nonplussed Ed Droste in the comments. yeah, alright Ed, but the most recent Grizzly Bear record would sound 10x better with some freaky Casio up in there.
It is certainly an interesting list.
However, of the featured albums which I have actually heard, I'm not enamoured with most of them (Swans, VCMG, Liars, Laurel Halo, John Talabot). I wouldn't suggest The Quietus is being deliberately obtuse or obscure by leaving out other critically acclamed albums (Grimes, Tame Impala, Grizzly Bear, Beach House, Japandroids, FyLo) because it is a very eclectic website...But less obscure lists (like DiS') aren't jumpig on bandwagons or picking popular albums. Just because The Quietus' list is different doesn't mean it is any more genuine.
It is very good for picking out new things though.
Can I just say it's rather depressing
when you spend hours on the internet daily reading and listening to new music a list comes out where you haven't heard of 75% of the bands on there. I'll take the DIS list at least it makes me feel like i've kept up with music.
This is the kind of thing that depresses you?
its a whole new world
I think Aladdin said that
can't fathom this attitude
oh no, a whole list of cool records I haven't heard of.
Yeah I don't really get this outlook at all.
The whole reason I look at these things is to spot gaps I've missed- A ton of cool looking new music collated together in a way that's difficult to do any other way, and which is presented in a manner that already connects them tangentially with other albums you might have heard and liked.
The haters have brought Rory out from the woodwork though at least :D
where bounce?
I would like to see.
in this thread!!
popular and missed user 'dis-integration'
that's Rory?!
*SQUEAL* RORY YOU'RE MY FAVOURITE QUIETUS WILL YOU SIGN THIS PRINT-OUT OF HYPERSPECIFIC??
fanboy alert
i'm a bit like that with doran tbf
IT'S EXHAUSTING.
it's rejuvinating
to hear people praising strange, obscure records, and then to really *listen* to them yourself, to try and hear what advocates hear in them.
*rejuvenating
Finally
A list that gives VCMG & Gravenhurst the credit they deserve. STILL no fucking Tindersticks though. Grrrrrrrrr.
I've not heard Gravenhurst but I absolutely agree re: VCMG
One of the most criminally ignored albums of the year
Indeed
This is the only list that has included it as far as I'm aware.
1 million% agree re VCMG
that album has been played heavily this year. Also fantastic to see Vatican Shadow and Silent Servant high up the ranks...2 more albums that have been criminally overlooked in other polls.
bit mainstream for me
Wow
That Hirsute Pursuit album cover is amazing.
