So, what will DiS' top 5 albums of 2012 be then?
Revealed tomorrow. Can any of you correct predict the top 5?
25-6 went up today http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4145829-drowned-in-sounds-favourite-albums-of-2012--25-6
And this year we've done a countdown from 100 (don't think we've ever done anywhere near that many, but it felt like far too many records adored by our staff and you lot would miss out if we didn't do that many).

correctly*
Chromatics, definitely
Sharon von etten
Blondes (so sean's happy)
Swans
Liars
Guessing the order, though, that's the trick. That's the trick.
this is probably right.
although Sharon von Etten is the only album there deserving of it IMO.
I'll go for:
1. Chromatics
2. Swans
3. Blondes
4. Sharon von Etten
5. Liars
SVE would definitely be a popular choice
Since many DiSsers agree with the staff in this case. I guess Chromatics and Swans are the most likely top two, given that Liars/Blondes seem only loved by a select few.
Yeah I suspect it'll be these 5 too
Order would be:
SVE - Chromatics - Swans - Liars - Blondes
maybe...?
Good to see Aesop Rock in the top 10
Well deserved, innit.
By process of elimination it looks likely to be the five mentioned
Probably:
1. Chromatics
2. Sharon Van Etten
3. Blondes
4. Swans
5. Liars
Of those 5 Swans should win but ESA didn't care for it if I remember correctly.
1. swans - the seer
2. liars - wixiw.
thats the deserving top 2!
None of the five albums mentioned in this thread would be in my top 50 for the year.
Some of you lads really need to investigate more/better music.
In that case, I eagerly await your top 5
To point us in the right direction, at least
Also, it feels a bit odd that DiS is only part way through the Lost 12 of '12
but the top 5 albums will be announced tomorrow. Sort of dimishes the impact of the former. For me the perfect solution would be the move the larger list to a later date, but I predict sean would just argue he's just keeping in line with other publications (doesn't seem to bother pitchfork, which probably remains the most read list).
Not sure this has to be the case
I see the Lost 12 series as something to dip into in spare moments, rather than a big dramatic countdown to be dramatically unveiled with loads of drama. It makes sense that it should sprawl across the length of the month, filling in the gaps where reviews and whatnot are drying up.
Might as well JAG my own, while we’re on the subject. http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4145832-lost-12-of-2012--ryat-totem
kinda makes sense that the lost 12 of '12 is put out with no concern of the rest of the list?
Yeah I guess so,
I think I care more about how early the main list is. I know its like the musical equivalent of complaining about advent calendars in september...but I think I would care more if this was the week before christmas.
Sorry bro
Only doing it this week so that I can take a few days off next week as I haven't taken any holiday this year (unless you count two days visiting a friend a couple of Mondays hungover after festivals?). Not many times a year when things quieten down enough. Also for a heap of January releases to listen to and acts to schedule interviews with ahead of Feb releases. And yeah. Everyone else runs rather "early"!
Sean can I ask for something for next year?
I think it would be nice to have a short, purpose-written paragraph about the releases (at least for the top 20 or so)... The snippets of reviews are good and all, but in a lot of cases, i've already read them, particularly for releases i've enjoyed... What I like about the little blurbs in other lists is the opportunity to put the release into a bit of context for the year or to comment on it after many more listens.
Polite.
Politely seconded.
yeah
I did think about doing that (I do every year), but to be very honest, I like to let our staff vote as late as possible, so only worked out what the top 20 was last weekend when all the votes had come in.
I'm also aware that our year-end list is a chance to drive people who don't usually read the site, into the reviews section to read things they missed.
It's hard to know which balance to strike, and I do worry that it's all already a bit TL;DR
I'm glad this is what people want tho, as it's exactly what I want too!
Sweet
Perhaps 100 words written by someone and then a 50/100 word snippet from the review. Can't imagine that would be too tl; dr (at least for the top end of the list.)
And i'm sure the community would be happy to contribute... I for one would love the shot to try my hand at some music journo thing on a small scale like that...
Why not get each of your staff to write 50-100 words on each of their top five?
That should then cover most of the blurbs for the list without creating loads more extra work.
to make this more interesting
One correct top 5 guesser will win a set of MBV re-issues https://twitter.com/seaninsound/status/276968497756663808
you can double your chances and enter on Facebook too http://facebook.com/drownedinsound
Fair enough evil Sean, I will give it a go...
1. Chromatics
2. Swans
3. Sharon Van Etten
4. Liars
5. Blondes
Make it so. (in fact, don't, as I don't really care for the Chromatics, maybe give it to Liars instead.
This*:
Chromatics
Death Grips
Liars
Sharon Van Etten
Frank Ocean
*) none of these will appear on my end-of-year list, to be published at the end of the year
two of those are already in the 100-6

I love listing things
I don't necessarily totally believe in the hierarchy of a list...but I still like the process of listing. To have all five equal just doesn't make sense to me.
Sorry it doesn't make sense. Did you read my blathering before it? You replied quite quickly, so I would presume not.
just list stuff
it isn't like the world depends on which order you put them
I did list stuff. 5 great records listed alongside each other. 95 more listed before them.
hmm
sharon van etten
blondes
chromatics
swans
liars
just a guess.
I'd guess...
Burial/Kindred
Death Grips/NLDW
GYBE/Allelujah
Stumbleine/Spiderwebbed
Swans/The Seer
