Favourite Hip-Hop/Rap release of 2012?
Now that we've had time to digest all the great albums and mixtapes that came out. Usually takes me longer to work out whether I like a rap album than an 'indie' or dance one. Maybe I'm biased because this was the year I finally let more rap music into my life , but I think it's been a stellar 12 months.
For my pick, I honestly couldn't choose between Schoolboy Q's 'Habits and Contradictions' and Kendrick Lamar's 'good kid, m.A.A.d city'. Both excellent releases from the Black Hippy crew. Have also been enjoying material by Action Bronson and Danny Brown.
Very curious to know what's actually had staying power with people this year?

Killer Mike - R.A.P. Music
^This or 'Blue Chips' by Action Bronson
I feel like it should be El-P but these two have been much better.
El-P, Killer Mike, Schoolboy Q, Kendrick Lamar, Action Bronson, Joey Bada$$, Captain Murphy and Serengeti have impressed me this year. Harry Fraud's probably my favourite producer.
Not heard that Serengeti one before
Have got it on now, really enjoying it! The Alchemist has definitely been my favourite producer.
I've really struggled to understand the appeal of any of the Black Hippy stuff.
But I heard that Kendrick Lamar song on the radio t'other day and I think my ambivalence might be because of my shit laptop speakers and Spotify.
El-P Cancer 4 Cure
Blah blah white suburban male predictable blah blah *yawn*
it is brilliant doe
p4k white boy safe choice ftw btw
Quakers
Play it now
I agree
Still gets played even now
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, Aesop Rock:
http://drownedinsound.com/releases/17355/reviews/4145772
Had a lot of time for El-P too. Curren$y's 'Stoned Immaculate' was nice but samey, Death Grips ok but shouty and Killer Mike explosive but not so long lasting.
A lot of other hip hop I've loved this year didn't come out in 2012.
Aesop is getting faaar fewer mentions than I was expecting
I mean, i know it's massively dense (it might be my album of the year and I still don't really know what the back half of it sounds like) but even so, appears to have been a little forgotten
Kendrick
So, these...
Supreme Cuts and Haleek Maul - Chrome Lips... DOWNLOAD THIS SUCKER, it is great. Check out M00N. Gives me chills.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMriw_YecvA
Haleek Maul's own solo EP, Oxyconteen, is also well worth a download. Predicting big(ger) things for the teenage MC in the next year or two - he's managed by one of the Big Pink (as I understand).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cg20HXY7CcQ
Children of the Night's mixtape is pretty indispensable too. File beside Joey Bada$$'s 1999 (with its own thread) as retro-flavoured vibes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIHuP_8wkww
Massively into (still) the El-P and Killer Mike LPs. One frequently follows the other on the iPod. Angel Haze's Reservation (the one with New York on it) is all the evidence you need for her ongoing ascent. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hKP5ljDar8
Hodgy Beats' Untitled EP: fantastic. Again, a freebie, so not having it is pure stupidity. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBuEXxkIaTk
Kendrick's LP is, honestly, phenomenal... The way it all hangs together, it's got the potential to be a classic. Frank Ocean's too... I'm sure he's this century's Stevie Wonder.
Thought Skelethon ran out of steam a little myself, starts strong though! Cadence Weapon's Hope in Dirt City is 80% awesome - Conditioning is one of my standout tracks of the year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXLrT5zbrGQ
Nas' album had its share of treats. And the Bigg Jus album is pretty ferocious... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgRPcW21QyM
Yeah, OK. That'll do. Enjoyed hip hop > any other music in 2012.
Also really enjoyed the Terry Urban Lana/Biggie mashes...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIf5AWpFf6o
I don't believe in GUILTY pleasures. Nothing guilty about liking this.
The Mick Boogie/Beastie Boys Grand Royal mixtape is a must-have too (Google and thee shall find... features some awesome relative rarities). Features this pretty dang super remix... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LI1CwW-UN4 (which is, for some reason, sped-up on this YouTube post)
That Haleek Maul dude turns up on a few Main Attrakionz affiliat bits...
sounds alright from what I've heard, check Deniro Farrar for the really good shit there tho, he's on one. The beat on New York is insane mainly cos its pretty much this pitched down: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKhj4veZjUw
doesn't really count as..
it was put up free on bandcamp late december last year then removed and is being released jan 13 on anticon but the Young Fathers album has definitely been my most listened to and fav bit of hip hop (maybe next year as well).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXZ2whuVXLs
other than that, i thought Why? was back on form with Mumps etc and have enjoyed Aesop Rock, Busdriver, Bluebird, Curren$y, Cadence Weapon and once you get past/used to sufjan stevens vocoder i enjoyed the s/s/s EP.
Been a great year for hip hop
Killer Mike - RAP Music
El-P - C4C
Aesop Rock - Skelethon
Joey Bada$$ - 1999 (free!)
Action Bronson & Alc - Rare Chandeliers (also free!)
JJ DOOM was... alright
And don't sleep on the amazing new Roc Marciano album - Reloaded. Minimal brilliance.
yep, spot on.
ive enjoyed all these
out of the things that haven't been mentioned I've
really dug Billy Woods' album History Will Absolve Me. it's a bit long overall but it's got some great songs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQOGBHcqQQs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZZBr3jjqX8
I also really like Kool AD - 51 and Heems - Nehru Jackets, tho ymmv depending on whether you dig their style or not
Luv NY's pretty good as well - it's got Kool Keith, Roc Marciano, and OC and AG
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkxST8BvMrs
probably think of some other stuff later
Lil B - God's Father
If you think I'm joking then kindly go fuck yourself
really enjoyed this too
surprised there was so much drama about him because I liked him from the first time I listened to him, it wasn't like i had to work at "getting" him like some people seem to talk about
He's had a strong year - first half in particular
Also an insanely productive one, even for him.
White Flame and God's Father definitely up there with his best. #1 Bitch and Trapped in Basedworld were deranged fun. Rich After Taxes and Obama Basedgod also well worth a look in.
Riff Raff - Birth Of An Icon
rap game albert einstein
*Martha Stewart
I think he's the Furby of rap
Maybe Neopet
2012 has introduced me to rap/hip-hop
Seems to me the most interesting music this year has come from this genre. I second El-P and the fantastic Kendrick Lamar album. Like Bada$$ and Killer Mike, too.
The gags might be a bit too Kiwi for foreign folk but this is well-worth a listen, too. Home Brew: http://homebrew.bandcamp.com/
Checking out the Schoolboy Q album
Menomena sample, wasn't expecting that!
so happy when that piano riff popped up
used really well as well

All free. Nothing more depressing than Action Bronson, Killer Mike, Joey Bada$$ getting plays.
You heard Futures actual album?
Cosign Gunplay, 100s and Chinx Drugs.
HOW DARE YOU ADD KILLER MIKE to that list, jimi, eat a dick etc.
O yeah King Louie one is good too.
He's the only one out of the Chi drill scene that I can get with.
He's damn good
Not sure thats even his best mixtape but it still stands tall. He's one to keep an eye on for sure. Prob one of the best around at the moment alongside Gunplay.
is it really depressing
really
jimi is jones'n, is all.
Those and El-p WILL be the usual suspects though.
and kendrick, of course.
its all a bit Ugly Duckling for me
Now you're just trollin along.
whats that other one too...
Curen$y yeah him too, he sounds like them. Dunno if he's done owt this year tho.
lol but no

vs

basically a carbon copy, right?
pffft
logic
.
Nothing more depressing than Gunplay, IMO.
Although if I'm craving some modern day ign'ant rap, I quite like Troy Ave.
http://www.troyave.com/
Gunplay is too entertaining not to like!
I think the Main Attraktionz album is the one I've stuck with best
on that note, I've been plugging it everywhere but:
Friendzone's 'Collection 1' is hands down best instrumentals package of the year. so, so good
Did that come out this year?
Feels like it's been out for a LONG time.
Rough Top 20 (no particular order)
Aesop Rock - Skelethon
Roc Marciano - Reloaded
Lil Ugly Mane - Mista Thug Isolation
Killa Kyleon & Mouse On Tha Track - Welcome To The Fish Fry
Nas - Life is Good
Killer Mike - RAP Music
SL Jones & Burn One - Paraphanalia
Brother Ali - Mourning in America
Haleek Maul - Oxyconteen
El-P - Cancer For Cure
Action Bronson - Blue Chips > Rare Chandeleirs
Friendzone - Collection 1
Meyhem Lauren Respect The Fly Shit
Angel Haze – Reservation
Main Attrakionz - Bossalinis & Fooliyones
Tree – Sunday School
Alchemist - Russian Roulette
Kendrick Lamar – gKMc
Ab Soul – Control System
Schoolboy Q – Habits & Contradictions
Not albums, but you’re missing out if you haven’t been checking Ryan Hemsworth’s mixes this year, easily up there with my favourite stuff. He released all 12 as a free download the other day, but the Fact one could be my favourite:
http://soundcloud.com/factmag/ryan-hemsworth-fact-mix-2012
On first listen Big Boi’s album is nice enough, but there;s a bit too much Kid Kudi-esque indie baiting for my liking. Could easily grow on me, but doesn't make the cut yet.
Best said though
Of all of those only 3 are properly great IMO - Aesop Rock, Roc Marc and Kendrick.
I think I would add Sunday School to that 'great' list.
MIght just be my favorite release of the year, up there w Kendrick, way different though.
Yeah, I've only had that a few weeks
But I'm really impressed. Once I've given it more time it could be up there.
All that stuff is consistently good-excellent though imo. There's been a lot of slightly patchier mixtapes with some real gems as well.
Yeah, it's interesting to think which ones are actually 'great'
I'd agree with the three you mention, all of which were in my top 5 list I submitted to the staff list. Also, I'd add the Killer Mike record.
Yeah I immediately felt harsh on Killer Mike when I said that
I guess those 4 are what I'd call the potential 'classics', but it's hard to know what people will still be listening to when the dust settles.
...and I left off Deniro Farrar & Shady Blaze which is definitely up there.
Just because no one has mentioned it ...
Kanye West presents Good Music Cruel Summer
think it has some excellent songs on it (Clique, Mercy, Don't like)
Think 2012 been more about the songs than the albums for hiphop, at least for me. Agreed that Kendrick Lemar made a great album though, but I've been enjoying my hiphop mostly through playlists of individual tracks.
Love
Earl Sweatshirt - Chum
Schoolboy Q - There he go
Mr. Muthafuckin' eXuire - The Message 1 & 2
A$AP Rocky - Fuckin' problems
Lil B - I own swag
Angel Haze - New York
House Shoes ft Danny Brown - Sweet
etc etc
Clear Soul Forces
A lot of my favourites have already been mentioned but these guys have stayed on my iPod all year.
Track:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWKLuwR_bFw
Free album: http://clearsoulforces.bandcamp.com/album/detroit-revolution-s
Definitely one of the better boombap releases of 12.
My fav off that:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWirHdqZz4M
Also, on the boom-bap tip
I actually loved Apollo Brown and OC's Trophies. Despite OC's very best attempts to fuck it up.
I thought the production was what let that album down.
Apollo Brown is ok in doses but a full length w him producing is way too one note. boom bap baboomboom BAP soul vocal snippet BAP swelling strings SWELLING STRINGS bap BLARING HORNS BLARING HORNS boomboomBAP. Sometimes it sounds kinda tough but it gets old after a few songs.
These strayed from the formula enough to hold my interest:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mD5-kKs83ZY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGvdhtbt_Dc
Whats your issue with OC on this album?
Hahaha
You've described Apollo Brown incredibly well there.
I think OC has some terrible lyrics on this album. There's a couple of times when I actually cringe at how bad they are. (It's important to note here that I am actually a huge OC fan - I actually once rented a flat because there was a nearby graffiti piece that read 'Word... Life')
I can't provide solid examples right now, but off the top of my head there's this one lyric about avoiding spyware on your laptop... It's bad. FIX UP OMAR.
Hmm Im not a lyrics first type of guy
so I didn't really notice on the first couple listens through. Not sure that album has me caring enough to dig deeper and find out, unfortunately. I do have love for OC as well, though. I love that some of the DITC crew is still at it. Just bought the new Show and AG album last week.
Found that pretty dull, but it's been well recieved
Luv NY definitely did more for me.
The ex Def Jux and Black Hippy guys have definitely nailed it the most
Favorite out of those is Skelethon, but Good Kid... is really great too.
Haven't listened to anything like enough hip hop this year judging by this thread, but did think that everything that Lil Ugly Main put out was ace and Death Grips had a good year too (well, kinda...!)
Only other one that I really liked that no one's mentioned yet is the Triad God mixtape, NXB. Lot of people will probably dismiss it as hipster bullshit or whatever, but it's got an awesome night bus / headphones feel to it. Definitely worth checking, particularly if you liked the Dean Blunt and Inga Copeland stuff this year
I haven't heard of ANY of that stuff in your final para :\
hey Shipment, are you going to do a list?
that's the main reason I keep coming to this thread
Yeah just started throwing stuff together last week,
real heavily last weekend. That's way early for me! I usually get started after Christmas cos there tends to be good releases in December and I'm hella busy from Oct-Jan. Kyle's column request got me going early though and Ive been throwing a couple things together for that, have to finish that up today.
Not that my list will have TOO much different from some of what's itt, on the album front, anyway.
Expect some mixes like I did last year though. This was definitely a year for 'handful of good/great songs' on a release but only a few real full-length standouts. I guess the state of rap has been like that for a while though, really.
I was thinking we should get the DiS rap lovers
to band together and all vote for a partic album that gets no press that we all love to get it placed in the official DiS countdown? Would be kinda fun(ny) maybe.
Yeah.
Mine would be the Roc Marciano album. Although Pitchfork did rate it quite highly.
I'm down with that one.
I think its an album we can all agree on?
Let us do this ting.
killer mike is probably my aoty
but the billy woods album is really really worth a listen. really enjoyed the joey bada$$ mixtape and i feel like the jj doom record isnt getting as much love as it deserves. thought it was great on first listen and better every time since.
Exquire gets verse of the year
for his guest spot on el-p's 'oh hail no'
Been holding off from posting here
because my latest column features most of my favourite rap releases of the year. Writing by me and a bunch of other DiS hip hop regulars;
http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4145820-champion-sound-10--feat-rolling-hip-hop%E2%80%99s-best-of-2012
this is really GOOD
yeah good job eryone
I like that it's there's quite a variety - as in songs, verses, producers, instead of a list of the same ol shite you see everywhere. yeah the selection is MUCH more diverse than the average listy thing - LOADS of stuff particularly in the free section I need to check out still
probably the best 2012 review I've seen yet tbh - tho generally much prefer genre specific ones anyway, as they actually go into reasonable depth
Absolutely - great work Kyle and everybody
Would have really liked to contribute but to be honest didn't listen to nearly enough hip hop this year to add anything useful - it's not like you guys needed the help anyway. Will definitely be trying harder in 2013...
Also, the year end version of The Wire magazine came out yesterday and their hip hop columnists' chart is quite interesting. To be honest, haven't been as into their hip hop column in recent years, but they do always throw up a couple of records that are worth checking. This is the list is (in no particular order I don't think):
1. Chief Keef - 'Back From The Dead'
2. Future - 'Pluto'
3. Gucci Mane - 'Trap Back'
4. Gunplay - 'Bogota Rich: The Prequel'
5. Ka - 'Grief Pedigree'
6. King Louie - 'Val Venis'
7. Kendrick Lamar - 'good kid, m.A.A.d. city'
8. Starlito - 'Post Traumatic Stress'
9. Ty$ & Joe Moses - 'WHOOP!'
10. Shy Glizzy - 'Law'
Great to see 'Trap Back' in there
Gucci was really back on form this year.
Been enjoying Captain Murphy since I got the download
Was hard to digest as a video. Pretty impressive for a first go from FlyLo, kid can definitely rap. Maybe needs to inject a bit of energy, and find his own voice a little (too Tyler meets DOOM atm) but the overall sound is sick.
Captain Murphy should consider hooking up with kindred spirit Quasimoto for a record if you ask me.
YA
Glad we got to be included, I think it helps to bring a variety of perspectives.
Kyle, when are you gonna cut the checks, btw?
Thanks for all the positive comments guys
Really appreciate that. I think lists can generally be a bit corny, and I hope this side-steps that a little bit. Was great having people's contributions included as well, gives it that individual edge rather me writing 40 blurbs about my favourite stuff.
Checks will be in the post a$ap -let me just count up the profit first.
gettng on TREE now
excellent stuff, really cutup and weird
Kyle's DiS 2012 hip-hop review is up
With contributions from myself, badmanreturns, CoolerthanTV, TheShipment, vamos and veridisjoe.
http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4145820-champion-sound-10--feat-rolling-hip-hop%E2%80%99s-best-of-2012
All good stuff up in there.
Ho is veridisjoe, by the way?
One of KiK's joke accounts I think
I think it might be Flying Lotus
or Tyler, the Creator
kyle is a badman
really enjoyed that roundup. Anything with 100s, main attrakionz affiliates Gunplay, harry fraud, tree, lil ugly mane, flylo, future, school boy q and DMX doin roodolf the red nose rain deer has my vote each and every.
sos I couldnt fit in a responce, been to busy with job apps and life in general to get on a review eoy ting too much.
Gunplay
just has that over the top cartoon like intence, energetic, take no prisioners, fun as hell personality that puts him way above most MCs right now for me. I can see why it'd be an aquired taste to indie bed wetters tho ;)
Wasn't going to bother adding to this,
There's already a lot of albums above many of which I haven't heard. I am listeing to Aesop Rock right now though, and it really is an amazing album.
BLUE CHIPS for rhyll.
What am I gonna want to hear from this year
If I like Kendrick, Kanye, Nas, Biggie
.L.W.H. - CIA TV
Took me a while to get onto this, admittedly, but he's landed in the criminally overlooked category for a second year running. Right up there with Friendzone for the best instrumental tape of the year.
Pretty essential stuff for fans of cloud rap/MAz/friendzone and shit. He surprisingly decides to close out the record with an 8 minute New Wave track which he somehow pulls off too... Great stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybFSMosUlTM
http://lwhmusic.bandcamp.com/
Wow, this is wonderful!
Title track is great, so is the cut with Main Attrakionz. I agree with you completely, right up there with Friendzone, maybe even a little better
Yeah I struggle to see how he slips so far under the radar
even in comparison to the rest of the Green Ova lot. The strength of the .L.W.H. record over Friendzone is that rather than a collection of (old) beats it's a properly arranged album.
The MAz cut is great, but somehow I think the record would have been better without any vocal tracks. Minor gripe though.
