The Fall - Victoria
No fucking way My Way...
Watchtower for sure though
I thought someone would protest about My Way
but the original is sentimental guff sung by that awful arsehole. Sid Vicious sings "I killed a cat, but not in a gay way".
WIN.
interesting you called Frank Sinatra an awful arsehole
In a post about probable murderer Sid Vicious
This is true
Sid Vicious was a cunthead. But I was more talking about the people who worship that rat-pack shit. I should have made myself clearer.
The fact that Sid was an awful person doesn't mean Frank wasn't
They were both pretty loathsome.
The original is actually a French song
called Comme d'habitude, written by Claude Francois. So Sinatra's version is technically a cover too, though Paul Anka rewrote rather than translate the original lyrics.
And Paul Anka rewrote them...
after a young David Bowie had been given the lyrics and done a lousy job - Bowie's bitterness at the song's success pushed him into a solo career and 'Life on Mars' is inspired by My Way
given the lyrics?
I meant 'given the job of rewriting the lyrics'
Coil - Tainted Love
Creaming Jesus - Temple of Shite
Jello Biafra and DOA - We Gotta Get Out of this Place
World Domination Enterprises - I can't Live Without My Radio / Funkytown
Renegade Soundwave - Can't get used to loving you
Orbital - The Saint
Ha! Just listened to that Creaming Jesus cover, it's amazing
http://open.spotify.com/track/61TWQJfcHhOLHp9FZvIJHg
this'd
for Renegade Soundwave
^this to funkytown
actually i don't think it's better than the original but i do like it
Nine Inch Nails - Get Down Make Love
Anthrax - Got The Time
Big Black - The Model
Curve - What A Waste
Curve - I Feel Love
Fishbone - Freddie's Dead
Ministry - The Light Pours Out Of Me
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Higher Ground (I can't stand Stevie Wonder)
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Superstition
Siouxsie & The Banshees - Dear Prudence (I'm no fan of The Beatles)
Van Halen - You Really Got Me
1000 Homo DJ's - Supernaught
Metallica - Am I Evil?
Agred on supernaut and Am I evil?
Disagreed on the model and I feel love.
I haven't heard the last two
But all the rest are wrong.
Rating Fishbone above Curtis Mayfield, Ministry above Magazine, RHCP above Stevie Wonder is just perverse.
I like the Big Black version of The Model but no way is it better than the original.
Personal taste mate.
I'd take Ministry over Magazine any day of the week. I think these covers are better than the original.
I also love Creedence Clearwater Revival's cover of I Heard it Through The Grape Vine better.
Tool's version of Led Zep's No Quarter is also a belter.
Slits version of I Heard it Through the Grapevine is awesome
The original is untouchable though
Anybody who can't stand Stevie Wonder is dead inside.
Sorry, mate.
I'm quite happy at having no Stevie Wonder in my life. No need to apologise.
this cover of Higher Ground by Ellen McIlwaine
is the best cover of the song i have ever heard
beat that
here is the link
i'm an idiot
Ellen McIlwain - Higher Ground
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkJPKt6bzaM
so good
Anthrax Got The Time
is indeed the correct answer, well played Sir
much as I love Curve
Their version of I Feel Love isn't better than the original
Pretty much every cover of a Bob Dylan song
Pretty much every cover of a Leonard Cohen song
hell no
only Cohen can sing Cohen.
Those warbly off-melody soft female vocal a cappellas on all the adverts for the last 2 years.
All of them.
Time to post this again
http://musicgob.tumblr.com/post/13328124658/shit-trends-in-music-2-watery-eyed-indie-chicks
Superchunk - Brand New Love
death cab's version as well
Futureheads - Hounds of Love.
No way!!!!!!
NO FUCKING WAY.
The phones remix of that track is better still.
Cat Power: Red apples.
It's DefinItely by the way. Every time you put an 'a' in the word a fairy dies.
Cat Power - Satisfaction
Cat Power - Wonderwall
yo la tengo - the whole of the law
beats the original by soem way, most ylt covers are better though. on a different not i think the dinosaur jr version of just like heaven is as good as the original.
^this is what I came in here to post
although it doesn't really belong in this thread because there's no "almost" about it.
Spiritualised- Any way that you want me
the Troggs' version is really ponderous
Sleep - Snowblind
Breaking the Law - Therapy
Supersuckers cover is superior.
imo.
For some stupid reason I thought this was referring to record covers
and was about to say that the Kraftwerk re-release covers were much better than the originals...
But I'd say that How To Dress Well's version of R Kelly's I Wish is better than the original (just)
Only Love Can Break Your Heart - Saint Etienne
Take Me To The River - Talking Heads
Johnny Cash - Hurt
and, obviously, Comfortably Numb - Scissor Sisters.
Comfortably Numb was a good cover
but not better than the original. that was iconic. No-ones gonna think much of the Scissor Sister's in 40 years time. It's just a good disco song and that's it.
neither is hurt
sorry, they're both great for different reasons
Heartbeats - Jose Gonzalez
Baby I Love You - Ramones
no way to gonzalez
Hounds of Love - The Futureheads
still no way
I love that you can't bring yourself to this a CG post
Oh, I didn't see that.
STILL NO FUCKING WAY.
Tricky - Black Steel
better than Public Enemy but both great
Dinosaur - Just Like Heaven
so much better than the original
Get out
The original is perfect in every conceivable way
(I do like the Dinosaur Jr version though)
this to the first part
the dinosaur jr version sucks
you guys are crazy
the Cure version is terrible
Dinosaur Jr - Show Me the Way
even though they don't like it themselves, it's better than Frampton
^this one belongs in the "songs where you can't decide which is better: the cover version or the original" thread
Utterly, utterly
laughable opinion.
DJ Sammy- Boys of Summer
WHAT THE ACTUAL FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU

The Lemonheads - Mrs Robinson
Soft Cell - Tainted Love
Oizone - Love Me For A Reason
Manic Street Preachers - Suicide Is Painless (Theme From MASH)
Pop Will Eat Itself - Beaver Patrol
The Sisters Of Mercy - 1969
Absolutely agree re Mr Tambourine Man
A
no to mr tamborine man

Dylan's ltrics and voice and passion and almost-growl and rawness of the guitar makes Mr Tambourine Man great. The Byrds cover is proper 60s chart bollocks.

John Cale's versions of Hallelujah and Heartbreak Hotel
Especially the versions on Fragments of a Rainy Season
massive ^this to Heartbreak Hotel
his version of Pablo Picasso is pretty great as well - not sure if it's better than the original tho
I love the ZZ Top version of this
but the Rapeman version of Just Got Paid is fantastically scuzzy:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-eZ6zBKL2Y
Thom Yorke - All for the best
Ron Sexsmith - I Don't Like Mondays
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1qCmg7f5_k

For shame.
Gutter Twins doing Primal Scream
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=simJezlc4dE
And I love Primal Scream.
Bauhaus: Ziggy Stardust
The realisation of what the piss-weak, poorly produced and borderline-folk original was meant to sound like.
For a classic ALBUM, I still think Ziggy sounds rubbish.
And I say that as a Bowie loon who loves every song on it
Completely agree
Good call, man. Bauhaus fucking nailed that song. I'm also going to say that their version of Third Uncle absolutely obliterates Eno's original, too.
No way
I mean their version of Third Uncle is pretty great but you can't really beat the original
Well, there's no denying Eno's is good.
But their version represents for me, a convergence of everything that I love about Bauhaus: the drumming and bass are top notch, Daniel Ash's guitar sounds incredible, and Peter Murphy's vocals are great. I may be slightly biased as it's probably among my favorite Bauhaus tracks, but I still think it's better than Eno's version.
Ramones - I Don't Want to Grow Up
Love Tom Waits' original but the Ramones absolutely own the song.
was that the ramones or joey ramone's solo album?
Red House Painters - Shock Me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAcJrPQwaH8

Therapy? - Isolation (although that is kinda sacrilegious)
Deftones - Savory
Joy Division Covers
I really like
Nine Inch Nails - Dead Souls
Warrior Soul - Interzone
This'd for the Dead Souls cover.
I don't think it's better than the original, but Reznor definitely captured the spirit of the song, and really did it justice.
I love the Low version of Transmission
Probably not better than the original though
16 Horsepower - Day of the Lords
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoCPZBX2-g4
Truly magnificent.
The Windmills of You Mind - Dusty Springfield
because her voice is so gorgeous.
dusty springfield
suddenly from south wales.
The Toy Dolls - Nellie The Elephant
oooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!!!!!!!
i remember seeing them do this on the tube or something similar when i was very young.
This Mortal Coil's version of Song for the Siren (Tim Buckley)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mUmdR69nbM

Spacemen 3 - When Tomorrow Hits
Galaxie 500 - Don't Let Our Youth Go To Waste
