Hip-Hop/rap – recommend me some great records?
‘Ello, OK, so I’ve decided I like rap more than I thought, on my walk to work I want to start checking out some uplifting, euphoric, lyrically clever rap music. My INCREDIBLY limited taste so far means the only artists I have on my Ipod are:
Kanye West, Jay-Z, Biggie and Jhest … really like those though
- Relevant artist taggings:
- None

Recently started listening to Finally Famous by Big Sean
Loving it. I Do It is MASSIVE.
well the obvious place to start is the 36 Chambers
then work your way from there
always meant to listen to this. Will do.
also try this, my favourite song from Wu-Tang related stuff
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKpIkOXgAmg
It's Gravel Pit. Stop pretending otherwise.
lol no
Gravel Pit is a tune.
Lets not hear anything against it.
i wasn't
but let's not be silly
it's a great pop song
we can all agree on that
This thread is going to get pretty embarrassing pretty quickly.
Loads of middle class suburban white kids pretending they have any idea about a predominately black music genre (and culture).
Just stick with Liquid Swords by GZA (because he once played an ATP promoted concert).
be constructive you beast
Not sure if that's anywhere near as embarassing as spending your life trolling an internet forum
of middle class suburban white kids.
Who do you think buys the majority of hip hop records?
Bit racist
Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientelle
and Fishscale are both amazing.
MF Doom is great to get into too, especially on Take Me To Your Leader by King Geedorah and Madvillainy by Madvillan.
Album of the Year by Black Milk is a great recent one.
For more experimental stuff Clouddead maybe?
The first 4 Outkast albums
Nah, just need the one that's got Shake It Like a Polaroid Picture on it.
Just put 36 Chambers on thanks to whoever said it
Haven't listened to it for about 2 years. Unreal.
I'd recommend Akinyele
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBb35VGOFRY
and
GZA - Liquid Swords
i still like Guerillas in da mist by Da Lench mob, and the first two Pharcyde albums are "Dope".
^ THERE IT IS!
Pharcyde are pretty much
everything a suburban middle class white kid first getting into rap could want:
- plenty of humour and silliness
- social conscience without being preachy
- introspective bedwetter rhymes
- great beatz
MC 900 Ft Jesus - welcome to my dream
No one's got flows like this guy:

The Roots - Things Fall Apart
I'm a big fan of How I Got Over by them too.
Otherwise, Illmatic by Nas, Tical by Method Man, Only Built 4 Cuban Lynx by Raekwon.
I know next to nothing about rap
But bloody love the first Jurassic 5 album and Spectrum by Quannum projects.
Madvilliany by Madvillain
it Takes a Nation of Millions by Public Enemy
Paid in Full by Eric B and Rakim
36 Chambers by Wu Tang Clan
Low End Theory by Tribe Called Quest
Stunts, Blunts and Hip Hop by Diamond
Step in the Arena by Gang Starr
Bizarre Ride II by The Pharcyde
Funcrusher Plus by Company Flow
Should do the job for starters on the classics.
For up to date try Good Kid M.A.A.D City by Kendrick Lamaar
^ this to these suggestions
this year I just can not get enough of El-P - Cancel for Cure. Looking like album of the year material.
uplifting, euphoric =/= lyrically clever
'Uplifting, euphoric' rap music sounds horrible.
I dunno, whoever's collaborating with Calvin Harris this week. Or the shitefest that is Pitbull.
Treat yourself to some classics, if you're just starting out
Get some of:
Outkast - Aquemini
Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde
Mobb Deep - Infamous
Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt/Blueprint
UGK - Ridin Dirty
De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising/De La Soul is Dead
Scarface - The Diary
Nas - Illmatic
Wu-tang Clan - 36 Chambers
The Roots - Things Fall Apart
Snoop Dogg - Doggystyle
Not exhaustive by any means, but that should give you a fairly good cross section of golden era rap.
If you're looking for stuff from the last couple of years, you can't go too wrong with
Kendrick Lamar - good kid, M.A.A.D city
Killer Mike - R.A.P. Music
Danny Brown - XXX

The Infamous
Ctrl+F Aesop Rock
Gah. Supreme middle class white boy here, but Skelethon is easily my album of the year. It has also unlocked the door to hip hop for me and its all i've been listening to fo the past week or two.
Blackalicious
Both Nia and Blazing Arrow.

http://youtu.be/l1FME73L44o
http://youtu.be/P1nxxciXu5Q
I fucking love Blackalicious, one of my favorite acts of any genre, haven't seen them get much love on here though strangely.
Doesn't help that they've been on hiatus for over half a decade
But they got nuff love when they were going, particularly amongst the indie crowd.
Both really strong records though, for sure.
You forgot this one, dude
