Musicians - how does the dynamic in your band work in terms of getting shit sorted?

Do you have different people to do different things, one administrative person, or different people handling bookings, merch, press, songwriting, w/ever?

we all do everything, but some people are better at some things, so they often take the lead. we've all written songs, all booked and arranged gigs, all use the band's (amazing) twitter account http://twitter.com/herparents
sometimes it leads to a few people going "cool, let's book this rehearsal" and it not happening cos everyone assumes someone else is doing it, but that normally gets fixed. better to be slightly haphazard like that then have one person getting shat on when their "area" doesn't go as well.

  • in my band.

guitarist is well good at sorting out practices and he's a bit of a tech geek. i am the opposite and soundcheck usually consists of me going "yo stef, there's no sound coming out of here"

drummer was until last week the only one who could drive. being 20 means that no one will give him a van. i tend to do internet stuff, and deal with most emails and talking to other people about stuff.

it kind of works. we all dabble in other areas of things from time to time. apart from the driving bit. it's not like we're a constant 150 dates a year sort of band so it's never been too huge a problem.

  • I'm in a 2 piece

Other guy mostly writes the music and I help with the putting together of songs.

I then do all the manager type stuff (internet shit, gig booking etc.) and also our rough recordings.

  • 4 piece band

I deal with gig bookings, organise recording, order merch, order pressing of CD's, pay people who need to be paid (for artwork and the like), keep an aye on and update all the social media and web stuff, manage the band's bank account, sort accommodation when we're on tour, arrange for van hire and I'm the only one of us who can actually drive so I drive to every single gig.

One of the other lads books practices and sends out the merch when people buy it online.

The other two do fuck all.

We have a manager too, he also does fuck all. Occasionally turns up at shows to drink the rider and insult people.

The writing is mostly a group effort.

  • that's so weird

I was going to make this exact same thread today!

There's 4 of us in the band. Our singer write all the lyrics and the basic structure of the song and it's normally me who decides to change or rearrange it or whatever.

As for all the other stuff - I do more or less all of it. I book about 90% of the gigs and additionally book travel and accommodation if the promoter doesn't. I'm normally responsible for selling merch although our singer does as well, sometimes. We release a lot of CD-Rs and I normally get the artwork together, get it printed and put them all together myself. I manage the Facebook page and write up any email interviews as our singer is a luddite. I deal with mail order too.

    I do a fair bit.

  • with Manflu

the bass player tends to deal with the money side of things (he has the DD to pay the studio rent and he normally covers the cost of things like cds and we pay him back), drummer drives us everywhere and myself and the singer tend to deal with emails for gig bookings, social networks etc. It's normally me that goes up to the promoter and asks for money at the end of the night too. Keyboard player doesn't really do much but that's fine.

In Sissy we have a manager and a booking agent who deal with admin things, but it tends to be the drummer who does the most out of the 4 in the band, he drives us to gigs as he's the only one who drives and has the technical know how to design sweet looking flyers and artwork. We all contribute to that but it's mainly him. The other guitarist/bass player is good at acting as the engineer/producer/mixer for our demos. I try to help out the drummer as much as I can as well as sort other stuff for example I found our current studio for us and the guy who is gonna produce our album and also sorted out the t shirt printing.

With both bands it's a group effort writing, it's all pretty equal.

  • With my main band I always do the admin side 'cos it's always been seen as 'my' band

It evolved from me playing solo and I do most of the songwriting. Someone else in the band now writes quite a few songs and someone else deals with the music production but I do most of the rest of it though a couple of people chip in on trying to get gigs.

The other band I'm in, I do literally all the writing, music and programming side and the other two members pretty much contribute vocals only. I quite like that arrangement as it means I can quietly get on with it all in my bedroom and just call on them when needed...

  • Normally works in most of the bands I've been in

that I do the logo / image / web presence and some of the general admin / bookings / emails.

Other people do more of the actual music. Meh.

I fucking LOVE designing logos me.

  • I'm an unbearable control freak twat, whch means I can't bear to let anyone do anything

or have to intentionally take a step back and do very little. Though that said the most serious band I was pretty much 50/50 with one other guy and the other three sitting about doing not a lot.

Hey guys, guess what, I'm not currently in a band, don't I sound awesome to work with!

  • I form bands with people who can barely play instruments and know nothing about music.

That way I get full creative control.
