Sebadoh or Dinosaur Jr. \_(?)_/
it's Sebadoh, though. because they're more emo and less wanky solos.
but yeah, discuss, and by all means disagree if you want.

Dino
done
yes
maybe if you just listen to Lou's songs, this might seem like a seductive opinion.
but on the whole, no?
true, I don't know enough Sebadoh to properly comment
but a wanky J solo is one of the greatest things to happen in music ever. Also I'm pretty sure the intro to The Lung is one of the most perfect things ever recorded, and then when J decides to rip things up ... lovelovelove
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71845ZdJwy8
Then again Lou wrote Brand New Love, so it's all goood
I was joking, s'alright
I love J's guitar playing, it's just that Lou is wired more like me.
what have you heard by Sebadoh then?
Bakesale and Rocking The Forest
also sorta skipped through III and Bubble and Scrape, but not enough to form real opinions on them. Bakesale is a pretty awesome album, but just don't as connected to it's style or ideals as I do to early Dino stuff
give III more time
took me a while to come around to the scrappier tunes.
(it's the best record Lou has ever been involved with)
I'm pretty sure you are wired more like Lou rather than the reverse bro.
well yeah...sure
if you're going to get pedantic about the whole thing.
I'm going to write *such* a song about this.
When are you going to pull your finger out and start this band bro?
well I have a few weeks off work after today
if Viney really wants to play tunes, that's cool. need a least a drummer, too. and a BASSIST.<---
also some kind of four track or whatever.
YES! on that intro.
amazing track
Sebadoh
done
well exactly
in a lot of the best music, it's the basslines that make it special.
but what if the bassist does other stuff too?
checkmate.
Both bands have their fair share of great stuff and mediocre stuff and even bad stuff
I told Lou Barlow this when I met him at ATP. It was 3am. I was really drunk. He was drunk but not as drunk as me. We (I) decided that You're Living All Over Me was the best album he was ever involved with, but on the whole Sebadoh were the better band. We (I) spoke for over half an hour. I was so drunk I saw this as completely normal behaviour. Good times.
You're Living All Over Me is in my top 5 albums of all time but none of the other Dino Jr albums are anywhere near even my top 500. Sebadoh on the other hand have two (III and Bakesale) comfortably in my top 50 and a load of other good stuff across the other albums and EPs.
At the end of the day though a 90 minute live set from each band on form is as totally excellent as each other. And I guess that's what counts.
there's a terrible photo of me grinning with Mascis
I didn't even realise Barlow was there. can't have been good for his self-esteem.
you pretty much validate my point with what you said about the amount of great Sebadoh vs. great Dino Jr., though.
I do love YLAOM, but it's the only record that gets inside me like most Sebadoh.
I just prefer Barlow's more brooding sense of melody and emotional depth. Mascis has a more complex method of emotional expression due to the surface-level simplicity of his songs. I appreciate this, but ultimately it means the depth of feeling isn't effectively conveyed.
i once told lou that happily divided was one of my top 5 songs ever written
and then he told me that jason wrote that one and then i was so embarrassed that i forgot the names of any of the dozens of his songs that i properly love too and stood there with a terrified grin on my face until he went away.
that made my day :D
glad you enjoyed it
because it haunts me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzgTM6ArASI#t=11m12s
at the Explosions in the Sky ATP I accidentally ended up standing next to Lou about six times
he clearly started to recognise me.
to make matters worse on the last night I was walking back from my chalet to the pavilion and he was walking in the opposite direction. he looked more than a little frightened.
With you on a lot of that
But I've too much love for Dino's debut & _Bug_ aswell, & would add 'Doh's _Harmacy_ to the list of their greats.
yeah sebadoh
but dino jr are one of the best bands also
am i the only person who thinks poledo is the second best song on you're living all over me
i'm just wondering
Yep I'm with you there
That said, I much prefer J to Lou overall. Sebadoh have their moments but Lou can be a real fucking drip sometimes.
I actually have to admit to not having ever really listened to much Sebadoh
Truth be told, I've not listened to huge amounts of Dino Jr, either — just Bug and Green Mind, plus the odd single here and there (Just Like Heaven, Feel the Pain).
Won't let that stop me from having an opinion, though.
rectify this!
you haven't heard 'You're Living All Over Me'?? that's the best one.
He's right.
Also little fury things is probably the most visceral start to a pop album ever.
Dinosaur Jr
Sebadoh wrote some great songs but then ruined them by recording them all in a bin
Superchunk's cover of Brand New Love >>>>>>>>>>>> the original
no, that adds to the songs!
I will post examples later, but first...no way. that song sounds amazing in its original form (the full band version). like the emotion is bleeding through the recording.
^this for Brand New Love
but I do love how absolutely HUGE the chorus on the Sebadoh vs Helmet version is
would agree with that
they closed with it at ATP and it was enormo
the electric version is probably Sebadoh's best song
for reals
Folk Implosion
;-)
(that wink makes it look like i think folk implosion are rubbish - i don't, I love 'em, but they're blates not an actual contender.)
Dino. Easily.
But then I consider Where You Been to be Dinosaur Jr's true masterpiece (and easily one of my top 10 albums of all time). So clearly I secretly hate Lou. And all reason.
Dinosaur Jr
Sebadoh wise I've only heard Bakesale which didn't do much for me. Gimme Indie Rock is an awesome tune though.
That said, as much as I dig Dinosaur I've never got why people go quite so batshit over them.
Dinosaur Jr
I only have 4 Dino albums but love them all so much, Sebadoh I have III and Bakesale. Both are good but can't touch Bug or Where You Been.
TOUGH
Sebadoh have more stuff that's worth listening too, but You're Living All Over Me is the best album by them both (love Bug as well)
though Sebadoh's first album expanded version is probably one of the greatest albums of all time as well
was really obsessed with the Eric Gaffney period of Sebadoh for quite a long while
Dinosaur Jr by miles
Bug and YLAOM are both untouchable classics and they have put out at least two more which are great. Not trying to wind anyone up, but I reckon Sebadoh have about one decent album's worth of material total.
I don't know.
You're Living All Over Me and Bakesale are on the same level of brilliance that they make me proclaim both Dinosaur Jr and Sebadoh as two of my favourite bands everevereveretc., even though I'm not wholly in love with other full albums from both bands' back catalogues. Although, there are an abundance of songs by both bands that are truly exceptional and don't feature on either of the aforementioned albums.
I'd say Lou Barlow is the overall winner. Although, J Mascis also has Witch and a turn in Upsidedown Cross too...
all this setting barlow against mascis talk
motherfuckers act like they forgot about J(ason Loewenstein), that dude makes bakesale. stupid good guitarist too.
it's all about Eric Gaffney
brought that weird unexpected edge to their early stuff
The Gaffney material is guff and tedious.
Lowenstein stands apart from Mascis/Barlow. His songs on Bakesale are the superior ones, indeed - particularly 'Dramamine', which is exceptional. Even 'Sixteen' on Bubble & Scrape is a perfectly fucked up injection of utter joy.
yeah I do actually really like him
just think they lost something when Gaffney left - could be Barlow became more tedious or something?
(admittedly Bakesale is the only one I've heard in full post Gaffney)
yeah i never really got into the gaffney stuff, he was good when they played with him the other year though
as the world dies... is proper funny live, bit of a soft spot for scars for eyes too.
every single one of jason's tracks on bakesale would be in sebadoh best of. i never really dug his solo album too much weirdly, shame, he could definitely put out a real killer record.
Close, but I go for Dino J
Especially given their incredible run of form recently. Farm, YLAOM and Where You Been are all exceptional records, and for Sebadoh, I would only put Bubble and Scrape in that kind of bracket. J's solos are one of the main reasons I listen to Dino J. Also, I know nobody agrees with me, but I don't think that Lou has ever written a good Dinosaur song, despite writing loads for Sebadoh.
Came here to post about the new stuff
Call me a wimp, but I just enjoy DJr's newer records a lot more due to the higher ratio of melody to noise. 'Beyond' totally blew me away as I bought it on a whim having never seriously listened to Dino before (also highly enjoyed Farm, but less of a surprise now).
sebadoh while jason is playing guitar
I thought Sebadoh were a metal band.
I guess I should listen? Where to start with?
III if you're willing to humour them a bit (not that it's not great, it's great)
or skip to bakesale for the best and most immediate one.
I heard a splashing around in the bathroom so I went in to see what was happening. My 3 year old son had wet hair and he was standing by the toilet. I asked what he was doing and he said ' 'doing my hair' ' and then went back in for another handful of toilet-water-hair-product.
Anyway, listening to Bakesale now. Kinda jangly, not sure about his voice either (says the Dino J fan). I like Skull, on that one now.
hahahah
in my head he was wearing a leather jacket.
i bloody love lou's voice. i think it might be weird coming into them late cos he's such an archetype, if you've heard all the schmindie already then maybe it just feels a bit humdrum jangle nonsense. but he is THE whiny jangle man, the very pinnacle. fucker can write songs too.
surprised if you didn't like some of jason's tracks though, not too amused and dramamine; those are fucking rock songs.
Yeah my timing is def influencing my
decision. I do like those two you said there. There's plenty to like actually.
III probably has the biggest variety and is the trad place to start - all 3 contribute songs
and it's got a range of production quality as well as acoustic and electric songs. it's kinda a balance between their earlier and later stuff
Bakesale's the most immediate definitely. Freed Man is them at their most self-indulgent (and best I think). Smash Your Head on the Punk Rock (collection of two eps) is probably the most badass, tho it still contains plenty of fucking around (which I like). Bubble and Scrape is somewhere between Smash Your Head and Bakesale I guess?
