it's not really punk when the label haven't done anything wrong
if you don't want a big label contract, don't sign one you fucking idiots
Not this
disappointing bunch of norms in this thread
HAHAHA
NORMS.
I think this might be the slowest comeback in DiS history
OR PERHAPS
the thread's revival prompted people who had otherwise missed the thread to read it afresh.
But sure yes okay x
my god you're such a drip
:D
any other bizarre 80s terminology to throw out there along with norms and drip?
Keep being punk4lyf, sunshine.
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4418951#r7170718
really weird scenario from head to tail
really can't see where they were coming from signing the contract, or breaking it... but i guess it was good publicity.
Honestly I suspect...
1.Signed 'cos loads of money on the table.
2.Broke 'cos loads of money means you can't do whatever you want.
I'm not sure if it's good publicity - obviously people claim'll publicity is good but they already had a large fanbase and it's pretty hard to see how anyone who wasn't aware of them before but is through this will think anything other than 'fuck me - they sound like a bunch of massive twats,'
The whole scenario has definitely been good publicity in the short term
No one cares if musicians are cunts - it never affected bands like Oasis - and all this attention has made them unavoidable in the music press over 2012.
However, in the long term, a major label can pump far more money into your promotion. Furthermore, even most indie's would be scared of touching them now as they work on thinner margins and have more to lose from their antics.
this seems like a Brian Pillman to me
post of the
month.
Epic should out punk them
And release a bootleg of the download for Christmas giving them no royalties. This thing could have legs.
epic should fuck them over big time
It's hard to imagine them not suing the arses off them
Still don't get all the fuss about Death Grips
I downloaded that record to have another try. It's all so...monotone. Sure they're brilliant live, but on record...meh.
I don't think it's too much to say that The Money Store is probably a better record, if not that it is certainly a better place to start. Or at least it was for me.
I liked Ex-military when it came out
But it just feels like they have one trick and one trick only. And the trick is getting old.
I can't argue with that
pretty much how i feel about NLDW as well.
Still don't see what all the fuss is about with these guys at all really.
TROO PUNX
Epic fail
Also, as El-P said on twitter
I think Death Grips dropped Epic a while back now
o rly

You gotta hope
Epic paid their transatlantic flight costs for their show next week. Reckon they'll turn up still?
one would hope that their booking agent was sorting out their....
....bookings
I still do see what the fuss is about these guys at all really.
do
Satire.
You do see what the fuss is about at all?
or you don't?
I like them. They don't stick with me much after listening, but the odd blast is still a pretty fun ride. I was only disappointed that they claimed NO LOVE DEEP WEB would be a big departure from the sound of The Money Store, when realistically it was just a little more low key.
Almost certainly a band with a short shelf life, but we'll see.
F5 needed here
I DO
whatashockerbutireallydonthinkthebandgivesashitsoidonthinkishouldeitherilikedthealbumsbuttheyseemlikecollosalbellendstogether
I liked that album they made but they seem like total bells
This, no shows etc
Can't be adminned with them
Good.
They seem like a bunch of petulant shitheads. AND NOT EVEN THE GOOD KIND.
So there's a four page interview in Spin telling all
Interestingly, they don't come across as the DESPERATE TO BE PUNK AS FUCK RETARDS that some people have made them out to be, whether or not you agree with their actions
http://www.spin.com/articles/death-grips-artist-year-2012-no-love-deep-web?page=0
Makes for interesting reading, anyhoo.
no, they just sound like people who brought it all on themselves
through a self-involved desire to be SERIOUS ARTISTES
hmmm
If you look at that and all you see is a dick, I don't really have anything to say, pretty much
interesting indeed, thanks!
The Spin Article
had a reference to MTG, and that was awesome.
It certainly seems that there was a whole lot more to the situation
with Epic than first thought. However i still find it stupid that they cancelled their tour because 'the art is more important'!!!! Hmmmmmmmmm.....
They'll always be ace tho, cos Zach Hill's in them :D
There's nothing there that really changes anything though.
I mean it sounds a lot more like Death Grips were naive and not really clear what being a major label involved than being deliberately punk but it still pretty much winds up looking like they made themselves impossible to work with and Epic didn't do much wrong. Sure, it was unlucky that key people left but you can't really blame Epic for not supporting the second album and tour plans given that they pulled out of promoting the first and left everyone in the lurch...
Ha.
Epic are more punk than Death Grips.
I like how the label was like, "hey, yo, get in the van"
and the band were like, "no, we want to MAKE VIDEOS"
honestly find it embarassing
that people think that gimmick bands like OFWGKTA, Wu Lyf and Death Grips are 'REAL' and not just being marketed the same way as any other band, but from a different angle.
gmcfosho > Death Grips > OFWGKTA
Sure, you can pinpoint the second where the majors got involved with Odd Future
But if Death Grips are still being managed by Epic under some crazy marketing scheme, I'll be rather surprised.
but Wu Lyf have never had anything to do with a major
and have had the same manager and PR guy from day one, which they've never tried to hide.
Sure they are
All those Tesco ads trying to flog OF Tape Vol 2, you couldn't move for them. "I'll stab Bruno Mars in his goddamn oespohagus - Every Little Helps."
Loved Louis Walsh's face when Wu Lyf rocked up to The X Factor in balaclavas and started throwing petrol bombs all over the shop.
And I'm sick of everyone banging on about these 'Death Grips' on constant rotation on Capital FM.
For the next two months the Marmont was the band's Control station
"as they played an illusion game against everyone they were working with. Learning, through "full infiltration," about Hollywood social hierarchy. They subverted the Hollywood dream and wrestled for control."
i.e. they stayed in a nice hotel for two months.
:D
spot on. it's cringe-inducing stuff.
yeah, it's a really horribly written article
they come across as ok, but there's massive holes in their story. if they'd just fucking, you know, emailed the label once a week to keep on top of things the maybe situation wouldn't have ended up like it did, and it's not like it would have taken enough time to interfere with the album.
also surprised because i always assumed that the third member was the main producer and that zach was more a live member/contributor to the production
I dunno
it kind of sounds like Epic weren't actually the EVIL MAJOR LABEL that Death Grips actually made them out to be. They just worked like every other major label would?
Also, the fact they 'blew their advance' on an 'infiltration of Chateau Marmont'? Come on, dudes. The fact they're 'homeless' doesn't negate the fact that they'll have made a solid amount of money doing this recent European tour. Holding them up as some sort of ultra-punk DIY messiahs is ridiculous. They just understand how things work.
*the EVIL MAJOR LABEL that The Internet made out that Death Grips made them out to be.
Ahahahahahah
What a bunch of fuds.
Kinda sounds like they've been indie bedwetters the whole time now...
aren't
Death Grips just a bad version of Goldie Looking Chain?
also
They were on a major record label.
1. cancelling a tour for no good reason
2. putting a penis as cover art
Aren't compatible with that.
Dicks like that just help screw over fans and labels who , in this case, seemed to believe in them
Of all the disappointing norms
you might just have taken the biscuit.
Since when were people so bothered about whether some people in suits made dollar off a band?
FFS, we really do live in the age of the dullards.
oooohhhh
Sorry, i didn't realise we should all let some whiney faux rap/hardcore bands mess people around.
Watch them disappear around the middle of 2013. Unless they cancel thier tours again to film a video or make ANGRY posters.

Alec Empire called, he wants his schtick back
idk, man
in an age when the people with money are largely unwilling to take any kind of risk on interesting or challenging music, Death Grips being on Epic stood out massively. they could've basically done ANYTHING in that position and it sounds like they had people behind them to back them. but, uh, they didn't. they bitched and moaned and wasted their opportunities. it's a little sad really.
``they could've basically done ANYTHING in that position``
except the things that Epic don't permit them to do...
Of course not "anything"
but what they could have achieved at that level would have been amazing, and for it to be backed by a major label is, like guntrip says, a staggering result in the current climate. Of course the main people that had supported them at the label had been let go so I see their argument there BUT where was the management and label reps to calmly reassure the band of their options when they were quite obviously freaking out?
I'm not an amazing fan of Death Grips but I do recognise that they could have been a great gateway band for the mainstream to understand both how the musical underground works now, how an audience reacts and how to analyse a minor phenomenon. It does hopefully suggest to the majors that there is a big audience that IS waiting for something a bit more noisy and abstract. The way music cycles work suggest that this is the time for something to blow up and this possibly could have been that (like it or not).
listening to the Money Store
I don't feel like Epic put any unreasonable requests on the band.
And even in that article the only thing the band mentions is not giving them money to make videos (preferring the band instead, you know, go out and tour as a method of promotion - shock!) and not being willing to insta-release a record as soon as it was finished. Neither of which strike me as being particularly unreasonable.
No, but you're pretty into record labels and whatnot
whereas I think that if a band records music and wants to make it available without having to wait 9 months or whatever for some arbitrary commercial cycle then that should be what happens.
.
Well, if that's what they wanted then why the hell did they sign? That isn't the label's fault - it's not like a musician could enter into a major label contract without knowing that they operate in that way.
No idea really
but as major record labels are largely obstructive, I'm always pleased to see something go against them.
.
I'm not the biggest fan of major labels by any means, but to be honest it doesn't sound like they were the 'largely destructive' party in this situation.
I said largely `obstructive`
and they were obstructive in that No Love Deep Web wouldn't be released at the moment if it was up to them.
in this case
the obstructive major label willing to sign a largely tuneless and hyper aggressive noise rap act. those scoundrels!
hey, you came back!
hi post
I didn't say they were scoundrels, just that they were an obstacle between the music and the audience
while we're quizzing
in what way were Epic unreasonably obstructive towards them?
They didn't want the latest album released, the band did
hence the band putting it up online
I'm hardly saying it's unreasonable full stop
I'm saying it's unreasonable if you sign a record contract where you exchange a large sum of money for a degree of control to then bitch about it.
where did they bitch about it though?
when they leaked the record because the label wouldn't release it until next year
I wouldn't say that was bitching about it, I would say that was doing something about it
so maybe we're at cross purposes here.
leaking your own record then leaking the label's irritated reaction is kind of bitching by proxy IMO
guntrip's just said this
way to go, hive mind
Major labels and alternative music rarely made great bed fellows
and now recording costs are far lower, they're virtually unnecessary.
Death Grips weren't comfortable working within the parameters the label set, so they were never going to be the band to reignite that particular love affair.
the thing is
I don't for one minute believe that Zach Hill was naive enough not to know exactly what those parameters were
Dicks like that :D
http://i.imgur.com/cKI7R.png
I wonder is Zach wrote on his own nob
So did you go with dick cover or censored cover?
Dick
Censored
the banana one

anyone see that video interview
where they talk about how they 'aren't into surface reality'? makes sense really.
i like the way their records sound
they sound good.
who cares about that shit
