really can't see where they were coming from signing the contract, or breaking it... but i guess it was good publicity.
Honestly I suspect...
1.Signed 'cos loads of money on the table.
2.Broke 'cos loads of money means you can't do whatever you want.
I'm not sure if it's good publicity - obviously people claim'll publicity is good but they already had a large fanbase and it's pretty hard to see how anyone who wasn't aware of them before but is through this will think anything other than 'fuck me - they sound like a bunch of massive twats,'
The whole scenario has definitely been good publicity in the short term
No one cares if musicians are cunts - it never affected bands like Oasis - and all this attention has made them unavoidable in the music press over 2012.
However, in the long term, a major label can pump far more money into your promotion. Furthermore,even most indie's would be scared of touching them now as they work on thinner margins and have more to lose from their antics.

I downloaded that record to have another try. It's all so...monotone. Sure they're brilliant live, but on record...meh.
I don't think it's too much to say that The Money Store is probably a better record, if not that it is certainly a better place to start. Or at least it was for me.

I like them. They don't stick with me much after listening, but the odd blast is still a pretty fun ride. I was only disappointed that they claimed NO LOVE DEEP WEB would be a big departure from the sound of The Money Store, when realistically it was just a little more low key.
Almost certainly a band with a short shelf life, but we'll see.

It certainly seems that there was a whole lot more to the situation
with Epic than first thought. However i still find it stupid that they cancelled their tour because 'the art is more important'!!!! Hmmmmmmmmm.....

There's nothing there that really changes anything though.
I mean it sounds a lot more like Death Grips were naive and not really clear what being a major label involved than being deliberately punk but it still pretty much winds up looking like they made themselves impossible to work with and Epic didn't do much wrong. Sure, it was unlucky that key people left but you can't really blame Epic for not supporting the second album and tour plans given that they pulled out of promoting the first and left everyone in the lurch...

they come across as ok, but there's massive holes in their story. if they'd just fucking, you know, emailed the label once a week to keep on top of things the maybe situation wouldn't have ended up like it did, and it's not like it would have taken enough time to interfere with the album.
also surprised because i always assumed that the third member was the main producer and that zach was more a live member/contributor to the production

The fact they're 'homeless' doesn't negate the fact that they'll have made a solid amount of money doing this recent European tour. Holding them up as some sort of ultra-punk DIY messiahs is ridiculous. They just understand how things work.

in an age when the people with money are largely unwilling to take any kind of risk on interesting or challenging music, Death Grips being on Epic stood out massively. they could've basically done ANYTHING in that position and it sounds like they had people behind them to back them. but, uh, they didn't. they bitched and moaned and wasted their opportunities. it's a little sad really.

but what they could have achieved at that level would have been amazing, and for it to be backed by a major label is, like guntrip says, a staggering result in the current climate. Of course the main people that had supported them at the label had been let go so I see their argument there BUT where was the management and label reps to calmly reassure the band of their options when they were quite obviously freaking out?
I'm not an amazing fan of Death Grips but I do recognise that they could have been a great gateway band for the mainstream to understand both how the musical underground works now, how an audience reacts and how to analyse a minor phenomenon. It does hopefully suggest to the majors that there is a big audience that IS waiting for something a bit more noisy and abstract. The way music cycles work suggest that this is the time for something to blow up and this possibly could have been that (like it or not).

And even in that article the only thing the band mentions is not giving them money to make videos (preferring the band instead, you know, go out and tour as a method of promotion - shock!) and not being willing to insta-release a record as soon as it was finished. Neither of which strike me as being particularly unreasonable.

Major labels and alternative music rarely made great bed fellows
and now recording costs are far lower, they're virtually unnecessary.
Death Grips weren't comfortable working within the parameters the label set, so they were never going to be the band to reignite that particular love affair.
