Paradise Last.fm

Would also like a nice chatty thread this week, what've you been hammering?

Additionally, had a bit of trouble with scrobbling lately (so my weeks' list isn't that accurate). iTunes recognises my iPod plays, but last.fm only picks up on some of it. Should I just reinstall?

    13a PJ Harvey 12

    3) The Vivaldi Recomposed thing. I can see this being top of my chart next week, perfect mix of maximalist and minimalist.
    5) I'm sure I've heard more Grouper this week (damn scrobbler). Wide is actually a very underrated album, but Dragging... remains her best.
6)Not enough time to make a judgement yet
    7)possible AOTY
8b) I think this will appeal to many DiSsers...but it is possibly too reminiscent of The Antlers.

  • Hi

I've actually listened to FlyLo a few times now, very good record that reveals itself with repeated listens. Will certainly be 'bigger' than his last two as it's far more accessible.

The Robert Hood album is great, Aesop Rock is probably my AOTY, and been listening to the Daphne album solidly for the last month or so which is a good sign.

Also been listening to the Tame Impala album a lot, which I think is even better than the debut.

    • It's interesting you say that about FlyLo...

It is apparently taking a few listens to sink in...but then that would seem to be at odds with it being "accesible". I think it'll be bigger purely on the back of the build up.

Second time I've heard someone say Lonerism is better than Innerspeaker. Starting to believe it might actually be true...

      • I guess what I mean, is that it will appeal to a wider audience

It's less abrasive, more subtle and cohesive. People that were big fans of Cosmogramma may find it a little less edgy, but it's still a very immersive listen. I'm not sure where I'd rank it in terms of his discography yet, but it doesn't feel like the disappointment I initially thought it could be.

        • Hmm, yeah

Though I think any gains in crossover audiences will be offset by those disappointed that it isn't Cosmogramma 2.0.

It's not all that relevant so long as we like it :D

  • So

    1 Sufjan Stevens 65
    2 Liars 35
    3 Grizzly Bear 27
    4 Grandaddy

    7 My Bloody Valentine 20
    8 Pink Floyd 19
    9 Boards of Canada 18
    10 Chromatics 15

Revisited Illionoise a couple of times this week. Otherwise Liars new record might just be my favourite of 2012, or the new Grizzly Bear... or Chromatics or... god damnit. Streamed the new Efterklang quiet a lot as well.

    b. Woodsman -

I've not listened to much music lately, I'm not sure why.

    1. I'm a big fan of this album now, really wasn't sure about it on the first few listens because it isn't like Alopecia but then realised I wouldn't just want a repeat of that album. It's so open lyrically that it makes it a really cathartic listen.

    2. Best band for cycling fast through traffic and just generally having a great time.

    3. Really good walking/jogging music when it's sunny and everyone looks happy.

    9. My friends' band just put out an EP and I reckon it's pretty great. They sound quite a lot like Wu Lyf (but, in my opinion, better) with some kind of tropicalia undertones. http://peaceforeverever.co.uk/

    2. always got a lot of love for cam, even when he's in gibberish mode i find it charming. both purple haze and come home with me are classic status to me.

    5. i listened to rhythm-al-ism and safe + sound this week, enjoyed both, but rhythm had a lot of quotable moments. especially enjoyed 'i usedta know her'

    7. damn ciara - basic instinct is a really good album, one of the best things the-dream has been involved with, which is saying something.

    9. great rhythms, really good harmonies, love these dudes.

    09. a i r s p o r t s – 12

this is almost identical to last week so I don't really have much new to chat about.
The Poor Moon album is growing on me. Maybe I do like Fleet Foxes after all. Hmmm.

I am jealous of all you people with Lonerism. I wish I still stole music. Unless you have a legit promo or something. I am itching to hear it, and I have a long drive from Brighton to Cornwall next week where that kind of album is ideal. The Warlocks are probably our family favourite Cornish driving music, especially the Phoenix Album. The kind of music that is made for driving to – unless you're doing the other thing that it is made for, in which case it;s probably best not to operate heavy machinery.

I bought a few albums for the trip – Japandroids – Celebration Rock; Woods – Bend Beyond; Thee Oh Sees – Putrifiers II, and How To Dress Well – Total Loss.

I don't know how good HTDW will be for driving. Inappropriate I expect, But I want it. Haven't listened to it yet, but I played the other three just the once and they are all good. Japandroids possibly really good. Oh Sees, same old same great - more garage bands should use flutes, it works too well. on theother hand, no one else should because it's Dwyers trademark. almost. other than slammming out a set of garage psych every couple of months. Woods is good, I like their sound, it;s nice and easy if not challenging at all.

I wanted the new Moon Duo album too but I don't know if it's out yet. Circles is a great track. Good driving music again.

Unrelatedly: My wife has been hammering Gangnam Style. My brother made a mash-up of all the memey video spoofs. It's pretty good actually. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUT6iMozFOs&feature=youtu.be

and lastly, I got the chance to mess about on the guitar for a bit, for the first time in 3 months it seems from the time between posts to Soundcloud. This is 5 minutes worth of the results
    http://soundcloud.com/meatbreak/minimal-theme-at-home

Is it nice? it;s not supposed to be much more than Nice.

That's my initial chat salvo. over to youze.

    • The HTDW is interesting

I'm in the limbo period atm where I may love it or I may not hear it again after this year. I was always interested in it because I wanted to here his sound without the ear-aching fuzz. And in fairness to him, he hasn't just thrown out a load of hi fidelity indie RnB hits, it's got some good structure and pacing to it. I think I probably will end up loving it tbh.

Thanks for the first comment btw. Really I should've tried reinstalling FIRST, then asked if it still wasn't fixed.

      • something about HTDW annoys me

        it just feels empty

        • Fair enough really

not exactly the sort of criticism that can be rebutted. Sucks to be you, however.

          • you seem upset

            • No, I'll try and be more eloquent

If you feel a record is empty, I could argue that the opposite is true...but really it would centre upon what we each define as empty. As it is more of a feeling I would find it difficult to put into words in any case. By "sucks to be you", I should've really said it's a pity you can't enjoy it, because I am currently enjoying it quite a bit.

              • I have heard it three times now

Crispin, it is a shame you find it hollow, I really don't. It is celestial, elegant. By 'empty' do you mean there is too much quiet and not enough happening in the space to really engage with? I didn't find that at all, even in the silence there's a lot of soul. The liner notes in the album are very sweet and touching too.

Wonton - I wasn't a fan of the first album much. Unlike this one, I did find that there wasn't enough happening. Only Walking This Dumb really connected with me. This is the exact perfect point in between lo-fi and high polish. So far, so wonderful.

                • The more I listen to Total Loss,

the more I'm beginning to decide it has better songs AND production than Love Remains. That record also had a slightly cobbled together feel to it, TL is just perfectly structured all the way through. Just a shame about the cover art...

I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that Crispin referred to the emotional side of things when he said empty (or hollow). So that is why I didn't feel I could argue against it, if you don't believe the music is genuine or heartfelt, it would be difficult for someone to convince you otherwise. I don't find TL empty at all, but in the past I have got that vibe from some much-loved albums (Yeasayer, for example).

New FlyLo has me on a bit of a frenzy. My favourite album of the year so far I think. Blows my mind how re-playable it is, can't see myself getting sick of it anytime soon. Flows really nicely as an album and doesn't demand too much attention, which is nice, not to say there isn't a lot going on under the surface though. Getting back into Nick Drake in a big way too.
