his street preacher stuff don't always sit comfortably with me, but on this one he's really on point. An angry and sad record in a lot of ways, but one that manages to come across as hopeful and idealist rather than defeated. Jake One did a decent enough job on the beats, but honestly I think Ali is a joy to listen to on this thing.
Not as good as Pilot Talk 1/2, but another good effort for sure. His consistency is almost to his detriment at the moment, makes it hard to really get excited by anything.
it makes it even harder. There's no down time for us to wish we had more work from him, it's just always there, always more you can listen to and no real reason to do it! PT 1&2 (and Covert Coup) were good enough for me not to really need any more for a while.
Rappers kind of have to be so prolific so their name stays relevant and all, but it's definitely hurting the longevity of their careers.
Hemsworth has killed it this year on everything, but this is my favorite thing he's produced. The twenty minute medly this is taken from is a lot of fun, but really just as a beat this has everything I want. I can imagine any number of people sounding fantastic over this.
and my playlists all went the way of the buffalo. I had one with favorite beats but oh well. I think that Tree 'Sunday School' release contains some of the more interesting production Ive heard in some time. I think we should poll our favorite songs at the end of the year and do a countdown, so everyone start compiling favorites to nominate.
There's a few I could include from Sunday School, for sure. That's slowly become one of my favorite tapes of the year actually. I'm definitely up for a favorite songs of the year countdown!
Really liking the production here. Dark. And where the fuck did Krayzie Bone appear from- Gibbs is making music with everyone now. Put out some good stuff this year.
in both album and mixtape form, and they're both a bit different (apparently)
i have the album version and i'm loving it. it's not flawless but there's a good number of tracks that already sound ultra replayable, the initial 10 especially.
in the last thread you(?) asked about who we would like to see pair up. Although this never came to mind, it is totally a great match. I love when rappers step into other regions and different sounds and try different directions out. That's a major reason why the KM&EL-P project was so intriguing.
Where else can I find editorial stuff like this on hip-hop? On an unrelated to hip-hop note, I've just started reading longer pieces on Resident Advisor and really enjoying getting a little more in depth, particularly on stuff I'm not so clued up on.
I think with hip hop, for me at least, it's more about 'quality blogging'. It's good to find the writers you like and start following them. Not sure what you read already, but this might be a good start;
kind of rare, ime. Noz is generally regarded as the one of the best -- if not the best-- hip hop writer at the moment. His old blog cocaine blunts is archived and contains some great work, the comments are a gold mine as well. I would agree with Kyle that finding a set of bloggers you side with is a good move, thats a good list he has there. Just remember that not everything they say is gospel and that its ok to disagree, even with those you have the most in common with. I disagree with these guys all the time. Martorialist is always bagging canonized classic NY stuff to put more fire on whatever underground (usually southern) act he is trying to champion, which usuallu is lol u crazy, but sometimes on the money. David Drake does good work and our pallets are almost identical (especially with classic stuff) but he is a big reason behind this Chief Keef push at the moment :/
noz writing for p4k is an interesting move, curious to see where it goes and who else jumps on because of it.
Yet, while some people could mistake Spaceghostpurrp as something new (given the relative size of the scene), who has considered Joey Badass as anything but a throwback? A good one at that, but I doubt with a title like '1999' kids are thinking he's trying to do something new. Best part of a decade ago I was a fan of 1988 by Blueprint (not really a fan now, but whatev)... that didn't mean I wasn't crate digging still, that I hadn't heard classic and slept on records from that period before laying my hands on that album.
I think there's a fair amount of conjecture here into what kids are and aren't listening to, tbh, and some confusion in the writing (Spaceghostpurrp can download his influence's entire catalogues instantly, but at the same time they're only available through specialist overseas collectors on Youtube?)
I've got friends who are rap fans in there mid-20s who still kill for that Joey-b bapping sound too. Nothing wrong with that, per se. Yet pretty much everyone I know who heard that tape has thought 'hey, kids talented, but he needs to move past that sound'.
While I agree that I wan't to see more than throwbacks, I also don't see how this is more of a 'problem' for hip hop than the supposedly 'stagnant' mainstream rap scene we had at the turn of the last decade (it wasn't, but was often accused of being one dimensional, dozens of clones of every rapper/sound etc). Let people have their homages, and let kids dig them, or dig past them.
lol bro you old. I think his general point is that the stuff that is getting the most press at the moment may not be as deserving/fresh/original as its made out to be. Bringing a little balance to the overall landscape. This is a great article for newjacks
although I think a little opposition to the dominant discourse is always a good thing. As you say, I think most people's writing has recognised that Joey et al are throwbacks, but there's still some crazy hype flying around. Even if I don't agree with every word, it's just nice the odd article adding some context and resisting the tide.
Think it needs touching up, cloud rap feel. Made the music for someone else and this fitted pretty well when the stem for grown up was about. Feedback much appreciated as this is not the finished version
http://soundcloud.com/skellywager/danny-brown-grown-up
Don't get me wrong - I like the dude and he's done some great tracks but I just find him a little bit drab over the course of a long player. Lot of exciting stuff happening in hip-hop right now but you wouldn't know it from this record.
Could be condensed to about 12 tracks and not lose any quality.
I feel as though bigger problem for artists like Gibbs though is maintaining an audience. I've enjoyed everything he's put out so far but with each release I lose a little interest. He's a decent rapper and has an ear for beats but there's not a great deal of variation. It's a cliche but sometimes less is more. You rarely get to anticipate and look forward to a release anymore.
It seems like ideas are increasingly becoming the most valuable commodity in hip-hop and I don't think Gibbs has many in the bank. He's a serviceable rapper with some personality but I'm not sure that's enough these days.
Rappers feel as though they have to put out free music to get attention and this inevitably contains their better ideas/tracks. They then have to continue to release music to keep some sort of buzz and by the time they release an album, if they're lucky enough, they've used their ideas.
I'm not knocking Gibbs but I can't see this continuing for too long. A similar thing happened with KRIT earlier this year.
I'm actually not as clued up on Dirty South as some people, I'm listening to the Koopsta Knicca solo album at the mo and pretty impressed by that. Crazy paranoid and claustrophobic. Know 3 6 isn't so out there though
Think that his Geto Boys album 'Til Death Do Us Part' is pretty underrated, but haven't really heard his stuff, though I recognise Having Things. Good tune.
Definitely overall more clued up on Houston/ATL/New Orleans sounds than Memphis though. Anyway, this is probably one for the other thread.
the last few hip hop 2012 releases I listened to were Billy Woods, Killer Mike and El-P (possibly all released around may or juneish?) but I didn't really bother with anything else around that time
but I dunno, I'm still waiting for him to really blow me away with a new song. This kind of reminds me of something like 'Be Still' off the last album; it's cool, but it doesn't really feel like a single to me. 'She Said OK' I found a little disappointing.
Based on his entire career, I have no reason to doubt Big Boi. But having said that, I hope the next leak is a banger.
But I'm sure it will have a few big tunes. Hopefully She Said OK will get demoted to a bonus track.
As an attempt at a single, this sits somewhere between the zzz fest originally intended to lead off SLLF ('Sumthin's Gotta Give'), and the amazeballs Shutterbugg, which ended up being the lead single after all the delays.
IMO it could've happily fitted on SLLF, but wouldn't have stood out.
These guys are really improving as rappers. Combined with their always excellent ear for beats (this one is no exception, love the horns on the chorus...) and penchant for a good hook (again, present here), I'm expecting big things. Judging by their recent output it looks like they've finally decided to implement a bit of quality control too. The album should be good. It's out in three weeks!
i was a fan of ice cube from the friday films, and decided to check his latest album out. needless to say he has NO chance of crossing over into rap music.
I've been waiting for this one for a while. The tracklist pretty much reads like a who's who of that scene, especially production-wise, where in my opinion they've really drawn from the cream of the crop (Hemsworth, Tree, Friendzone, Keyboard Kid). Like the Main Attrakionz guys, I think Shady Blaze's improvement on the mic has been really notable this year. He's stopped doing the double-time stuff quite so much and actually comes with some real presence now. Still early days on this tape, but the ingredients are all there.
New album drops in a week or so and their recent output has been surprisingly interesting sonically, and diverse.. Kind of lost any sincere interest in OF but did love BlackenedWhite..
Interesting that his new album will be entirely produced by Adrian Younge who put out Something About April, an awesome neo-soul record last year. It plays out like a soundtrack to a non-existent movie, and nods to 90s trip-hoppers like Portishead & Tricky as well as soul legends.
Not hip hop, but highly recommended if you haven't heard it:
plus Younge and RZA will presumably be going for a cinematic/soundtrack feeling. Wasn’t anticipating this record all that much, but think it could be pretty cool now.
just depends where he decides to go production-wise. A prelim track list got released and there was this giant OMG WTF on it in the form of a Lady Gaga guest spot. It is not there on his most recent version so that scared me for a minute and brought all my expectations back down.
He'd always maintained he had full creative control, and that made me think he might have loads of label enforced concessions on it. Seems like it was just a publicity stunt.
Yeah, that's kinda what I was feeling. He's the finished article as a rapper, but maybe could do better with album pacing and more consistent production choices.
12 tracks and only 3 guest MCs on the final tracklist is promising though.
Maybe not as much as 808s... dunno why there's no Silky Johnson, Clams Casino, Friendzone, Squadda B etc production. Nice sounds for sure, but maybe playing it a bit safer for the album release. Anyone checked?
Definitely a bit of a step away from 808s, and I like it for different reasons - Mondre and Squadda sound great on the new one I think. I'm not sure if it's because I'm so settled into the Main Attrakionz sound now, but the whole thing sounds easier on the ears and more like a straight-up rap record to me.
On one hand, it's a shame that there's less of the pretty Friendzone-style beats, but on the other I think this is a good development for them and the beats have more of a bump to them. Favorites are probably On Tour, Wings and Do It For The Bay.
This is brilliant. Great flow, great beat. I know it's cliche to say it but it really does sound like "old" Kanye, College Dropout/ Late Registration era.
Sunday School has ended up being one of my favourite free projects of the year. Lil Ugly Mane and Tree are two truly terrible monikers though - but hey, somebody's gotta fill in for 2 Chainz now he's not using Tity Boi.
The west coast one is great as they are all having fun. Also, the disparity is so noticeable when Mystikal comes in after Mac Miller. That's my favorite part. I miss Mystikal, he needs to make an album pronto.
that the Americans are yacking about in the YouTube comments of the new POS stuff? I've done some preliminary research and he looks like something I might hate... Does anybody have a reason for me to persevere?
Had a listen to that Kendrick fella tonight, seems like I might well be getting his record.
Otherwise Curren$y and Harry Fraud is wonderful. Wish more rappers would copy him and release free EPs rather than mixtapes. Agree with the dude in the Wire who said that Curren$y's greatest strength as a rapper is his selection of beats - he knows what's good and what's making him sound good. And he raps about weed and women and how fly he is. Love it.
Can anyone tell me some other mixtapes I need to download? Got the Gunplay ones and the Domo Genesis/Alchemist one too.
Saw the Madlib Medicine Show Tour last weekend. Pretty sad. Madlib was awful/too high but it still broke my heart to see him booed and jeered off stage. I still love the guy. Surprisingly bored by Freddie Gibbs; impressive technically but lyrically he needs to mix it up more to get my attention. Needs to get back to that midwestboxframe style again for my money. Only so many times I can tolerate a rapper yelling fuck pohlice during a show and trying to amp the crowd. The fact that the crowd was middle class white parisian made it even funnier, mondeo man next to me cheering against the pigs was pretty lolsome.
I made sure I went into it with zero expectations so I wasn't too let down, but still, Madlib playing the Forum just doesn't work. I'm not sure what he's like playing in a smaller venue, but he's certainly not the kind of DJ to rock a crowd like that.
I thought Gibbs was good though. It was my second time seeing him (first time was at East Village) and I think he's shown he can command stages of varying size. Needs to work on his adlibs a bit for sure (the fuck police thing was pretty non-stop both times), but I enjoyed it. As for the crowd, I think you just have to try and zone out of that stuff - if I let crowds get to me too much I just wouldn't enjoy any gigs.
No internet at home at the moment so I'm kinda behind on recent releases - need to hear that Kendrick!
I don't know if it's to do with the fact that I wasn't even expecting him to show up, let alone play a brilliant, varied set. SUPER!
Madlib on the other hand... absolute mess for 45 minutes, sounded like someone trying to recreate a Theo Parrish set with terrible sound issues. I left before Freddie Gibbs came on which was a bit of a shitter as I was really excited about seeing him but I'm sure he'll be back in a smaller venue on his own soon enough, was at Coachella when he played East Village earlier in the year :(
Still, worth the entry price for DOOM alone thankfully.
What I heard was pretty cool tho, was interesting hearing them on cleaner beats I guess but I'm not in a mad rush to hear it again as I would be if it was on their other tip wit hthe freaky floaty business.
His technical ability as a rapper continues to astound me. Too many internal rhymes to get my head around. Still think there is much more to come from him. That first verse is pretty deep- has a 'Bastard' feel to it certainly, which can only be a good thing.
Still think there is a lot more to come from Earl.
Shame, because F&L is still a very good record. He never had much of an ear for beats though, and a tendency towards the cheesy, so I'm not surprised he ended up here.
Could be the last end of year list contender, what with A$AP & Ghostface's records getting pushed back to 2k13, and Big Boi likely to end up in the same place.
Only other thing I can think of that I'm interested in is the Underachievers mixtape.
I'm doing an end-of-year hip hop column for the site and I would like your help.
Basically, it's going to be a series of end-of-year round-ups (best beats / verses / songs / mixtapes / albums) with which I'd like to try and bridge the gap a little between my usual editorial and the discussions we've had in the rolling hip hop threads over the past year. I'm not going to be doing any polls per se, but rather, I'm looking for people to contribute miniature blurbs on their favourite hip hop things from the year. I'm basically trying to arrive at an end-of-year list that feels unique to DiS, taking input from the community and not just listing the same records that are going to be hammered down our throats in every other list once Listogeddon gets under way.
So, if you'd like to contribute, please do get in touch. e-mail me on the address below and I'll respond this week with more details explaining exactly what I'm looking for. It'd be great to see contributions from as many of you guys as possible. Thanks!
I don't have internet at my house at the moment, so I'm sort of thrashing this out in the opportunities I get (read: at work). Thanks to those that have replied already though, will send out e-mails when I can.
By my count we’ve got 7 people (including me) contributing to varying degrees. A couple more and we’ll be looking pretty sweet I reckon…c’moooon, you know you want to.
Lemonbrickcombo and Coolerthantv – send me your e-mails so I can send you the ‘brief’.
Shady Blaze – The Grind, Hustle & Talent
Gun Play – Bogota Rich
Lil Ugly Mane – Mista Thug Isolation
Starlito – For My Foes
Future – Astronaut Status
King Louie – The Motion Picture
100s - Ice Cold Perm
Deniro Farrar & Shady Blaze - Kill or be Killed
Chinx Drugs - Cocaine Riot 2
Lil Durk - I'm Still a Hitta
Can't think what else I've been digging. Need to give the new Main Attrakionz album more of a spin. I see a new King Louie mixtape is around that I've not heard. Kinda wanna give Chief Keef another go, same with the newest Gucci Mane. Not sold on them first few goes tho so maybe not.
He was alright on something last year I seem to remember was he on ASAP Rockys tape? I never heard Spaceghostpurrps album either. Was always into Lil Ugly Mane more on that vibe but I'll give it a go if its worth it.
liked what I heard from him last year I think. Man there aint any good names left in hip-hop are there haha. Can't wait for someone to be called Lil Tree or something. Whats with Lil in names lol.
Meant to reply to your post about Chinx Drugs earlier in the thread - that one kinda passed me by but I listened to some songs on YouTube and it sounded great.
Fat Sax says: `I like to call myself Sylvester the Unskippable, because you could push play on my album - you gonna get an hour's worth of a good time.`
I would say Harry Fraud in terms of the amount of people who used his beats, and Hemsworth just as a producer in general (instrumental stuff/remixes/Hyperbolic Chamber Music).
but I dunno, I think maybe Alchemist won 2012. The guy has been all over the place this year, producing his most interesting work ever. The joint tape with Action Bronson which comes out tomorrow should cap it off nicely.
Well, as far as full projects there's been his Russian Roulette album which I loved, Rappers Best Friend 2 (instrumental collection), Gangrene - Vodka & Ayahuasca, Domo Genesis - No Idols, as well as Action Bronson still to come.
Then he's just had loads of good placements in which he always stands out. Not always flash, but tailored to the emcee while still sounding like Alchemist.
As an all rounder, he's just been fantastic. His beats on Roc Marciano's album, and, yeah, hopefully Action Bronson tomorrow will be the icing on the cake.
Hemsworth is one of the most exciting guys in music for me full stop at the moment, so as much as I like Harry Fraud, I'd say he just about has the edge. Been seeing features on him all over the place, including one in The Guardian recently, so I'm pretty sure he'll be carrying a big wave of hype into 2013.
Shame El-P had a quiet second half, cos he's still there or there abouts just for producing 2 of the years best albums in the space of a week.
Also, El-P is still up there for me, it's just he's a had a different kind of year to the other guys. The nature of what he does means he's been on tour promoting his records rather than being able to work on new projects constantly. By his standards, you'd have to say it's been a productive year. Love the way people are still discovering El for the first time too, in part because of the new connections he made this year.
I've been sucked in by the mystique, and I'm at least curious to hear it. FlyLo says he has a number of beats on it, but I find him hit and miss as a hip hop producer.
Let me just say, track 10 is pretty much my ideal hip hop track. DAT BASSLINE + Bronson and Evidence just murdering it. The singing at the end is something else... "VERY BREATHY" - classic.
Safe to say Bitch I Deserve You is the standout. Might be my favorite Bronson song to date.
More-so than the Big Boi one I posted above actually.
Been really enjoying Dre's recent verses, it's just great to hear him rapping again. Bodes well for whenever he decides to release something of his own.
Roc Marciano - Reloaded
Heems - Wild Water Kingdom
Mr Motherfuckin Exquire - Power and Passion
Boody and LE1F - Liquid ep
E-40 and Too $hort - History Channel
French Montana - Mac and Cheese 3
I'll probably end up listening to most at some point - really excited about Roc Marc in particular. listened to one of the E-40 and Too $hort tracks and it wasn't very good, but who knows. I assume French Montana will be rubbish, but it does seem to have a few Harry Fraud beats.
really need to hear the Action Bronson tape as well
but Reloaded is pretty damn essential. I'm also a fan of the E-40 and Too $hort records - there's a lot to digest, but as ever those guys bring it fairly consistently. Which song didn't you like?
I can't actually remember the E-40/Too $hort song I heard. the first thing that came up on youtube when I put the names in the search bar. think I was probably just in the wrong mood - enjoying this Supercalifragilistic song. I'll definitely give the full thing a listen.
also listened to the Himanshu tape - I like it. then again I'm a complete sucker for anything Das Racist (RIP) related. his rapping covers quite a lot ground he has already - but who care? has production from Harry Fraud, Mike Finito, Keyboard Kid, Beautiful Lou, LE1F.
love this song - really stupid, but also really addictive
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6OvqxOCBRc
Added to the one from the other week, this one is really good as well. Starlito's definitely up there with my favourite mixtape rappers - he's always bringing something slightly different to the table and I love his weary delivery. I especially like him doing sombre, introspective stuff - but then his Step Brothers collab with Don Trip was one of my favorites from 2011. Speaking of which, can't wait for Step Brothers 2 which I think drops quite soon.
or he's gonna oversaturate like Curren$y. But this is good.
Yeah agreed, although I’d argue that’s true of anyone caught in the mixtape system. I find Starlito more interesting than I ever found Curren$y, but yeah, there’s definitely such a thing as ‘too much of good thing’. For me, Funerals and Court Dates is his best and most consistent of the year though.
Didn't even realize it had been released a month or two back. The Preloaded mixtape was fairly recent and really good so I figured it would be like longer versions of those songs, but it's totally different, all new. I think I like the free mixtape better but this is still pretty good. I'm just glad DITC is still putting out good music.
(v.1) for posterity

he's half of G-Side.
Cheers.
I'll give this a listen later
The full Brother Ali release is streaming for a limited time:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLC4xqPUkLs
Gave this a listen yesterday
Enjoyed it on first listen. Heavy 7/light 8 outta 10 probably.
One song in and he seems like he's in a good place.
Yeah, he is in a good place
his street preacher stuff don't always sit comfortably with me, but on this one he's really on point. An angry and sad record in a lot of ways, but one that manages to come across as hopeful and idealist rather than defeated. Jake One did a decent enough job on the beats, but honestly I think Ali is a joy to listen to on this thing.
nice one, brother
you gonna do some sort of general hip hop thread, as previously discussed?
dun

MidaZ The Beast free album thing is kind of cool

Did any of y'all like the Curren$y record?
Not bad I thought if a tad samey
The Stoned Immaculate one?
yeah I liked it alright
He's got his groove and doesnt stray far from it.
He is really good at THAT sound though, so while nothing really jumps out to me much anymore it still works really well.
Better than Weekend At Burnie's which got more attention
Not as good as Pilot Talk 1/2, but another good effort for sure. His consistency is almost to his detriment at the moment, makes it hard to really get excited by anything.
When you are that consistent and THAT prolific
it makes it even harder. There's no down time for us to wish we had more work from him, it's just always there, always more you can listen to and no real reason to do it! PT 1&2 (and Covert Coup) were good enough for me not to really need any more for a while.
Rappers kind of have to be so prolific so their name stays relevant and all, but it's definitely hurting the longevity of their careers.
all ^this
it's hard enough to carry your buzz through to a proper album at the moment.
ie KRIT
God yeah
Not even a bad album, but we've had a wealth of great free KRIT. If it wasn't better than Wuz Here or 4eva, it just wasn't going to register.
This is all I want for Halloween:
http://soundcloud.com/djquik-3/the-demons-carol-revised-dj
Ha, you're on the ball... I hadn't seen this anywhere
Pretty cool. Is this from the new Quik and Kurupt album?
Didnt even know this was a thing
so not sure if there is a full length in the making or what. Cool song though.
Around this time last year Kurupt said they were working on a new album
But since rappers talk about far more projects than actually happen, I didn't get too excited.

What are y'all favorite beats of the year
This is the one for me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5U4IAXx2dGc
Hemsworth has killed it this year on everything, but this is my favorite thing he's produced. The twenty minute medly this is taken from is a lot of fun, but really just as a beat this has everything I want. I can imagine any number of people sounding fantastic over this.
I had to move all my files to a bigger hard drive
and my playlists all went the way of the buffalo.
^thising Hemsworth has killed it this year on everything.
whattaguy.
First leak from Young Dro x DJ Burn One
This is promising http://www.dirtyglovebastard.net/?p=57078
This is going to be good isnt it.
Recent interview he said
that he is only producing 2 tracks on this! Maybe exec producing it though, hopefully it has a unified sound.
New Freddie Gibbs.
Kush Cloud (ft. Krayzie Bone and Spaceghostpurrp)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9XPJvWc1-o&feature=youtu.be
Really liking the production here. Dark. And where the fuck did Krayzie Bone appear from- Gibbs is making music with everyone now. Put out some good stuff this year.
mixtape next week
Sensational
Is my favorite MC right now. Uploads new music to bandcamp / youtube virtually every day it seems!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zP8Tql-BFUM
Think somebody mentioned it in the last thread
but that Late Nights with Jeremih tape is pretty smooth.
Could probably get rid of about 5 or 6 songs from it (there's 18 in total), but after that you'd be left with something pretty great.
Its good, but its an r&b mixtape.
We need an r&b thread I reckon.
yeah, might be an idea
popped it in that thread cause it seemed like the closest fit.
you heard the sammy bananas work on adorn?
Hadn't until just now!
Haven't heard this yet but 773 Love (that's on the Mike Will tape)
is great, listened to that a lot recently.
Anyone wanna listen to Jaden Smith rap?
Sure you do.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ljbhRXjoDjk
He's competent, but it's clear that he's a clean-cut 14 year old and therefore it kinda lacks any sort of substance. Still, bit of fun.
Pretty cool,
if he could pull off the vibe like his dad then that would be good. Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince albums had some great moments.
freddie gibbs - baby face killa is out today
in both album and mixtape form, and they're both a bit different (apparently)
i have the album version and i'm loving it. it's not flawless but there's a good number of tracks that already sound ultra replayable, the initial 10 especially.
how does that work then?
pretty silly move i reckon.
I think the no dj version is for sale.
fair play
he did that with str8 killa too
St8 Killa and Str8 Killa No Filla were different though
The mixtape was much longer and less concentrated. I might be wrong but it seems like this one is just a case of paying to hear it with no tags?
Z-Ro on the new Boxframe Cadillac remix <3
Dj Fresh beat on On Me <3

holy shit
How has this been around for a few weeks, and not been news?
Totally hyped.
Yeah no clue,
in the last thread you(?) asked about who we would like to see pair up. Although this never came to mind, it is totally a great match. I love when rappers step into other regions and different sounds and try different directions out. That's a major reason why the KM&EL-P project was so intriguing.
I've said it before and I'll say it again
The resuscitation of producer/rapper collabos is the best thing to happen to hip hop in forever. Even better when peeps thing outside the box.
Whoa!
This came out of nowhere. Interesting collab for sure, and the two videos have got me psyched.
I'm not really familiar with Mannie Fresh.
Have heard the name but don't think I've heard much of his stuff. Love that New Orleans sound that Mos describes in the second video there though.
What should I listen too?
OH MAN.
I will create a mannie mix for you.
Shipment
This needs to happen. I want in.
Me too
For starters though,
this beat is so tough:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K20fKoSDvTQ
<3 vintage prime wayne
Maybe his biggest classic song if you're not familiar:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9CabmOu-Zk
Still brings the roof down.
I was not familiar.
But this is some good shit. Love that beat. Pretty weird seeing Lil' Wayne with his shirt on and his own teeth.
kendrick
http://soundcloud.com/spiffsociety/kendrick-lamar-art-of-peer
hella dope
got that early outkast vibe a bit.
yeah a little 'art of storytelling' vibe to it
Yeah, Babylon jumped at me too
maybe it's just the bass/titles that bring to mind those 2 though.
He sounds good on this.
Love how many styles he can fit into, very versatile emcee.
Subject matter reminded me of this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHoXg5T9oEs (WARNING: prepare yourself for some sever chipmunk vocals)
Kendrick's a little heavy handed with the message, still good though.
This is a great read
http://pitchfork.com/features/diamonds-wood/8948-revival-tactics/
Basically puts into words what Ive felt about those acts (+many more) for some time but have been reluctant to say.
Yeah, enjoyed this
Good to see they've got Noz over there doing a column.
Good column that.
Where else can I find editorial stuff like this on hip-hop? On an unrelated to hip-hop note, I've just started reading longer pieces on Resident Advisor and really enjoying getting a little more in depth, particularly on stuff I'm not so clued up on.
I think with hip hop, for me at least, it's more about 'quality blogging'. It's good to find the writers you like and start following them. Not sure what you read already, but this might be a good start;
http://passionweiss.com/
http://www.egotripland.com/
http://themartorialist.blogspot.co.uk/
http://tumblinerb.com/
http://www.steadybloggin.com/
Good long-form hip hop writing is
kind of rare, ime.
Yeah, I agree with most of this
Yet, while some people could mistake Spaceghostpurrp as something new (given the relative size of the scene), who has considered Joey Badass as anything but a throwback?
It can more or less boil down to
lol bro you old. I think his general point is that the stuff that is getting the most press at the moment may not be as deserving/fresh/original as its made out to be. Bringing a little balance to the overall landscape. This is a great article for newjacks
Agree with your points lb
although I think a little opposition to the dominant discourse is always a good thing. As you say, I think most people's writing has recognised that Joey et al are throwbacks, but there's still some crazy hype flying around. Even if I don't agree with every word, it's just nice the odd article adding some context and resisting the tide.
All that said...
is the Lil Ugly Mane album any good?
i enjoyed this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_l5t1tfXwyM
Wow. whatadiiiiiiick
but also lol at those questions too. Great scenes, should be some good memes that come from that.
<JAG>I did another Danny Brown remix.
Think it needs touching up, cloud rap feel. Made the music for someone else and this fitted pretty well when the stem for grown up was about. Feedback much appreciated as this is not the finished version
http://soundcloud.com/skellywager/danny-brown-grown-up
other Danny Brown tune.
http://soundcloud.com/skellywager/danny-brown-lie4-skellywager
<JAG/>
Needs a little more depth I think.
The vocals feel uncomfortable against that beat for some reason.
2nd one feels better to me.
yeah think you are right.
the feelings conflict a bit. might hold on to the beat for another time
New Young Dro
Between this and Freddie Gibbs, it's been a pretty good week.
http://www.livemixtapes.com/mixtapes/18801/young-dro-ralph-lauren-reefa.html
I read that he only produced 2 tracks on here?
But every song is tagged with burn ones tag so idk?
Sounds good so far tho.
few shitty tracks near the middle/end
check me out/on set, though <3
Check me out is the one.
2-6 is quality.
I'm not sure what's going on with that
Tapes credited to Burn One and Dro, but on the back cover it says only two Burn One tracks? Did he do some co-producer shit or something?
Only just starting the tape, but first couple of tracks are nice.
New Pharoahe Monch
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5BnEvew0Tw
His flow is all over the place here, but I kinda enjoyed it
I'm having a hard time enjoying the new Freddie Gibbs
Don't get me wrong - I like the dude and he's done some great tracks but I just find him a little bit drab over the course of a long player. Lot of exciting stuff happening in hip-hop right now but you wouldn't know it from this record.
There's just no reason to release such long mixtapes.
Narrow it down! It has its moments though.
Good review
http://stereogum.com/1162552/mixtape-of-the-week-freddie-gibbs-baby-face-killa/franchises/mixtape-of-the-week/
(Yeah I posted a link to Stereogum, lulz).
obviously the first half is better than the second half
but there's still enough good stuff happening to keep me going til the end, especially seventeen which shouldn't work but it does.
I agree about the lengother the tape,
Could be condensed to about 12 tracks and not lose any quality.
Totally agree
It seems like ideas are increasingly becoming the most valuable commodity in hip-hop and I don't think Gibbs has many in the bank. He's a serviceable rapper with some personality but I'm not sure that's enough these days.
It's Catch 22,
Rappers feel as though they have to put out free music to get attention and this inevitably contains their better ideas/tracks. They then have to continue to release music to keep some sort of buzz and by the time they release an album, if they're lucky enough, they've used their ideas.
I'm not knocking Gibbs but I can't see this continuing for too long. A similar thing happened with KRIT earlier this year.
Agreed,
reference this conversation upthread:

Gonna ask again here if it's worth checking out Lil Ugly Mane's record, cos no one's going to read it up thread
Some have told me it's the best of the Memphis revival stuff, and he actually puts his own slant on it, but on the other hand his name is terrible.
Cant help you on this one.
Well this is a dope beat
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4_QEDZC_lc
Will check it at some point.
Nice beat indeed.
All this memphis revivial stuff kind of reminded me to listen to my Frayser Boy - Gone On That Bay album, basically memphis sound from the Bay Area:

Nice
Liking these a lot.
I'm actually not as clued up on Dirty South as some people, I'm listening to the Koopsta Knicca solo album at the mo and pretty impressed by that. Crazy paranoid and claustrophobic. Know 3 6 isn't so out there though
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WND3gAyzO1U&feature=relmfu
Great album.
Check out Big Mike - Somethin' Serious next. Maybe the best/worst album cover ever?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3S3pJTze2Pc
http://youtu.be/Fz7UWu2rNNA
Deep funk hiphop >
Yeah I need to check that Big Mike for sure
Think that his Geto Boys album 'Til Death Do Us Part' is pretty underrated, but haven't really heard his stuff, though I recognise Having Things. Good tune.
Definitely overall more clued up on Houston/ATL/New Orleans sounds than Memphis though. Anyway, this is probably one for the other thread.
And unrelated...
the new Dead Prez :''D
worst thing i've heard in a while.
oh no! haha didnt even
know this was a thing. For the record I think that Dead Prez album that everyone loves is pretty overrated.
agreed
Definitely worth checking out
I've returned to it a lot this year and it's probably my favourite of the Memphis revival stuff.
Some highlights;

Nice, gonna get on this later
Mista Thug Isolation is great, yes
I dunno if this has been discussed yet?
http://pitchfork.com/news/48044-death-grips-say-their-label-shut-down-their-website/
looks like their new album (with great artwork) is still available on soundcloud
oh there's actually a whole thread about it
while I'm here, what's been good these last few months?
the last few hip hop 2012 releases I listened to were Billy Woods, Killer Mike and El-P (possibly all released around may or juneish?) but I didn't really bother with anything else around that time
Hmm, mostly single tracks here or there.
Do you like Aesop Rock?
the only album of his I've heard is Labor Days
I quite like it. I find his voice a bit annoying tho
He's actually changed his voice quite a bit
it's somewhat less nasally now. The album is brilliant.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dbd4h1kaFlY
seems good
I'll give it a go
You may like the LUV NY
album too. Its on spotify.
new big boi
http://www.missinfo.tv/index.php/big-boi-mama-told-me-feat-kelly-rowland/
love it.
on a side note, here's gucci fishing in a jacuzzi: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mamhzsLhjl1rz6olqo1_500.jpg looks like some kind of photoshoot, amazing scenes tho.
Song is ok.
Picture is hilarious.
I really like the new track
you can hear it Flex-bomb free at his Soundcloud
http://soundcloud.com/big-boi/mama-told-me
I quite like it
but I dunno, I'm still waiting for him to really blow me away with a new song.
I really doubt it's going to be an amazing album
But I'm sure it will have a few big tunes. Hopefully She Said OK will get demoted to a bonus track.
As an attempt at a single, this sits somewhere between the zzz fest originally intended to lead off SLLF ('Sumthin's Gotta Give'), and the amazeballs Shutterbugg, which ended up being the lead single after all the delays.
IMO it could've happily fitted on SLLF, but wouldn't have stood out.
Was wondering what happened to Little Dragon on this track
It sounds pretty similar to the original though and Kelly has a good voice
http://pitchfork.com/news/48059-little-dragon-speak-about-failed-big-boi-collaboration-on-mama-told-me/
i didn't really care much for the live version for some reason
but it comes alive on the proper one
New Main Attrakionz.
Feels like it's been forever, by their standards at least:
Do It For The Bay ft. DaVinci (Prod. Harry Fraud)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnjXwqB3mG8&feature=branded
These guys are really improving as rappers. Combined with their always excellent ear for beats (this one is no exception, love the horns on the chorus...) and penchant for a good hook (again, present here), I'm expecting big things. Judging by their recent output it looks like they've finally decided to implement a bit of quality control too. The album should be good. It's out in three weeks!
One of my most anticipated for the rest of the year
no doubt.
Love this beat
LA MUSICA DE HARRY FRAUD
Oh and Supreme Cuts have a production credit on the album
Awesome.
DaVinci has a new free ep out btw.
http://swtbrds.bandcamp.com/album/xlix
I like this beat, Harry Fraud <3 Glad they have eased up off the release schedule they had going last year.
just so you know
in the corner of your eye, (v.2) looks a lot like a pair of ascii boobs

very interesting, s_h
New Liknuts

This is basically everything I dream of.
man this is great
first one in particular
guess I need to check out these Lik fellas, huh
Yessss.
21 & Over, Coast II Coast and Likwidation are all drunken classics (particularly the first two).
Kyle, can you make sure you are the only guy who reviews
rap albums on DiS from here on out?
http://drownedinsound.com/releases/17271/reviews/4145567
I mean.
:(
Wish I had time to cover more hip hop records.
I had a bit of a moan about this as well!
but my righteous anger was compromised a bit when I told him to steer clear of reviewing 'hip hip' records in the future :/
Sheeesh
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l55hhzkTJk
yeah, i know where this cat is coming from
i was a fan of ice cube from the friday films, and decided to check his latest album out. needless to say he has NO chance of crossing over into rap music.
haha
This is Mehodor catnip:

good shit!
Deniro Farrar + Shady Blaze
http://denirofarrar.bandcamp.com/album/kill-or-be-killed
I've been waiting for this one for a while. The tracklist pretty much reads like a who's who of that scene, especially production-wise, where in my opinion they've really drawn from the cream of the crop (Hemsworth, Tree, Friendzone, Keyboard Kid). Like the Main Attrakionz guys, I think Shady Blaze's improvement on the mic has been really notable this year. He's stopped doing the double-time stuff quite so much and actually comes with some real presence now. Still early days on this tape, but the ingredients are all there.
Cheers man, sounds good from the first couple of joints
Will fit the whole thing in later. Have you listened to the latest LWH record? Haven't had time to check that either yet.
Not heard that LWH record
on my list though!
Has anyone been keeping tabs on MellowHype?
New album drops in a week or so and their recent output has been surprisingly interesting sonically, and diverse.. Kind of lost any sincere interest in OF but did love BlackenedWhite..
LP - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4c5fDc9rZWQ

Ghostface, MOP & Pharoahe Monch - Blackout
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fto19hkboqs
Oh yeh, this is from the RZA Soundtrack, not the new Ghost record btw
While I'm on Ghost...
Interesting that his new album will be entirely produced by Adrian Younge who put out Something About April, an awesome neo-soul record last year. It plays out like a soundtrack to a non-existent movie, and nods to 90s trip-hoppers like Portishead & Tricky as well as soul legends.
Not hip hop, but highly recommended if you haven't heard it:
http://soundcloud.com/wax-poetics/sets/venice-dawn-something-about
The Ghost album could be something special.
Oh weird!
I have that Adrian Younge album and its pretty cool, haven't heard anyone talk about it. Could be interesting.
I often I think Ghost is at his best when he’s over that soulful production
plus Younge and RZA will presumably be going for a cinematic/soundtrack feeling. Wasn’t anticipating this record all that much, but think it could be pretty cool now.
Hard to get truly excited for ANY rap album any more, really.
Only a couple a year maybe.
Anticipating that Kendrick, though.
Haha I get sucked in by the hype a bit
Don't think he's the second coming like some people, but I am interested to hear the Jay Electronica album if it ever drops.
I'm trying to keep my hype level down for Kendrick, cos as cool as it was, I still thought he had some way to go on Section.80.
I think HE is there,
just depends where he decides to go production-wise. A prelim track list got released and there was this giant OMG WTF on it in the form of a Lady Gaga guest spot. It is not there on his most recent version so that scared me for a minute and brought all my expectations back down.
Yeah that whole Gaga thing was ridiculous
He'd always maintained he had full creative control, and that made me think he might have loads of label enforced concessions on it. Seems like it was just a publicity stunt.
Yeah, that's kinda what I was feeling. He's the finished article as a rapper, but maybe could do better with album pacing and more consistent production choices.
12 tracks and only 3 guest MCs on the final tracklist is promising though.
^this for Kendrick.
I liked Main Attrakionz new album on first listen
Maybe not as much as 808s... dunno why there's no Silky Johnson, Clams Casino, Friendzone, Squadda B etc production. Nice sounds for sure, but maybe playing it a bit safer for the album release. Anyone checked?
Yeah, been playing it for a while and I'm a fan
Definitely a bit of a step away from 808s, and I like it for different reasons - Mondre and Squadda sound great on the new one I think. I'm not sure if it's because I'm so settled into the Main Attrakionz sound now, but the whole thing sounds easier on the ears and more like a straight-up rap record to me.
On one hand, it's a shame that there's less of the pretty Friendzone-style beats, but on the other I think this is a good development for them and the beats have more of a bump to them. Favorites are probably On Tour, Wings and Do It For The Bay.
Wings was sick
Definitely feeling it on first listen, but will give more thoughts after a few spins.
Gave that Deniro Farrar + Shady Blaze a once over and was feeling that too. So much MA stuff, so little time... back to their old tricks!
Well affiliate shit anyway, you know what I'm talking abut.
Apparently
Friendzone are releasing 2 Main Attrakionz LPs later this year :D
Awesome!
That more than makes up for it if true
so wait
who actually does production on it?
Still a bunch of familiar names
Supreme Cuts, Harry Fraud, Keyboard Kid, Joe Wax, Metro Zu - but also a bunch of new (to me) guys.
Cool news that Friendzone are doing full Main Attrakionz records though. Love those guys and such a good fit for MAz.
Here's a Main Attrakionz feature I just wrote
http://thequietus.com/articles/10367-main-attrakionz-interview
Nice
Gonna forward this to a couple of peeps that need to get into MAz.
Liking Bossalinis & Fooliyones more with each listen too.
Nice little article Kyle_
Good work.
New Ryan Hemsworth mix to listen to while you read it...

Here we go
The Kanye track from the RZA soundtrack
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRZBAvstyxA
Been waiting for this... it's good.
Like.
Wow.
This is brilliant. Great flow, great beat. I know it's cliche to say it but it really does sound like "old" Kanye, College Dropout/ Late Registration era.
Someone needs to do something to this beat:
http://soundcloud.com/fadetomind/fatima-al-qadiri-ghost-raid
Tree doing his cloud rap thing:
http://www.steadybloggin.com/tree-something-mean-ft-blanco-caine-prod-by-tree/
Can we talk about how 'Tree' may be worse moniker than 'Lil Ugly Mane'?
Been on a big Tree kick the last week or two
Sunday School has ended up being one of my favourite free projects of the year. Lil Ugly Mane and Tree are two truly terrible monikers though - but hey, somebody's gotta fill in for 2 Chainz now he's not using Tity Boi.
Sunday School is awesome.
haven't heard it

Roc Marc

and also Gunplay got arrested and may be in for some jail time. So stupid.
Yeah, I saw the video...
Tbh, it didn't look too serious, as far as threatening someone with a firearm goes, but I'm assuming he'll be away for a few years. Pretty ridiculous.
Decent Roc Marc track.
Gunplay is a bit of a dick, isn't he?

The west coast one is great as they are all having fun. Also, the disparity is so noticeable when Mystikal comes in after Mac Miller. That's my favorite part. I miss Mystikal, he needs to make an album pronto.
Wait, T.I.'s signed Chipmunk?
What the actual fuck?
Ugghhh he mentions Ciroc
Christ he's so shit.
I quite like Iggy Azelia though.
FUCKING
CHIPMUNK???
Seriously fucking baffling.
He's also changed his name to 'Chip' now as if that gives him even a shred of credibility.
He musta been one of the guys I skipped over
cos I have no recollection of who you guys are talking about.
Drip Drip
(kendrick)
I think this is going to need its own thread.
awesome.
i'm disappointed to see that gunplay featuring track you played the other night isn't on this
pumped to hear tho
P.O.S. - We Don't Even Live Here is streaming
http://www.prefixmag.com/news/stream-pos-we-dont-even-live-here-in-its-entirety/70702/
The horrible DiS review of the new xzibit
intrigued me enough to listen to it. I kind of like it! Sounds pretty tough to me, I like tough.
gucci mane - trap god
the first 10 tracks nearly sent me to sleep but the following 10 are fun, glad i stayed with it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oE_obKF-o8

also that cover, have to admit when i first saw it i thought those whisks were chicken drumsticks, kinda relieved they're whisks.
full RZA soundtrack is streaming now

Just got through the first 10 tracks and gotta say there's not a dud among them, really strong collection. Kinda hyped for the film now
Sounds good so far.
Some pretty decent stuff on here as it turns out.
Who's this Macklemore joker
that the Americans are yacking about in the YouTube comments of the new POS stuff? I've done some preliminary research and he looks like something I might hate... Does anybody have a reason for me to persevere?
Nope, stay far away.
Some twat posted 'Thrift Store' on facebook with the message
FINALLY SOME RAP LYRICS I CAN RELATE TO.
Put me right off. I'd guess it's hip hop for the 'sensitive' frat bro, but I'm not willing to explore this theory.
I thought as much, cheers.
I've only enough contempt for one of these guys and I'd prefer to direct it all at Mac Miller.
Hello, sticking my head 'round the door for the first time in a while
Had a listen to that Kendrick fella tonight, seems like I might well be getting his record.
Yeah that Madlib show was kinda sad
Did DOOM play?
Shite as usual?
nah; DOOM only did the London leg, this was the Paris show
DOOM was actually amazing in London
I don't know if it's to do with the fact that I wasn't even expecting him to show up, let alone play a brilliant, varied set. SUPER!
Madlib on the other hand... absolute mess for 45 minutes, sounded like someone trying to recreate a Theo Parrish set with terrible sound issues. I left before Freddie Gibbs came on which was a bit of a shitter as I was really excited about seeing him but I'm sure he'll be back in a smaller venue on his own soon enough, was at Coachella when he played East Village earlier in the year :(
Still, worth the entry price for DOOM alone thankfully.

is Riff Raff
the best rapper ever?
:D
Can't stop listening to this one at the moment
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5lh8K0xoQU
suedehead to thread.
aye thats a tune.
this is a beast, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ohbKidZLiA
he cracks me right up, not enough cunts like him about
Oh there's plenty in America.
Bird on A Wire is awesome yeah.
who?
Not like famous rappers or anything.
I just meant that there are lots of dudes *like* him, stylistically, you know?
ahh right, of course.
theres probably a few aye.
RAP GAME BURT REYNOLDS
Starting to get kinda old but its still pretty fun sometimes.
What in the name of...
http://www.datpiff.com/Lil-Poopy-Coke-Aint-A-Bad-Word-mixtape.405214.html
Sad days for humanity.
Today's featured tape on datpiff
I just HAD to listen. It's so bad. So so bad
In reply to your earlier post
check out the Tree mixtape that we talked about here (youtube links included):

busdriver - WERNER HERZOG ft. open mike eagle & nocando
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75jWcoa7Rk0
SERIOUSLY, guys
This is great. You win!
Never really got into Busdriver
but I have a killer collection of Herzog movies...
Yeah, this is a good track!
So Bun B is curating a colouring book
http://rapcoloringbook.tumblr.com/
Seriously how great is this?!
amazing
I hope they actually print these.
New Curren$y tape tomorrow
Goodnight!
http://www.datpiff.com/Curreny-Priest-Andretti-mixtape.410830.html
kinda been losing interest in Curren$y of late
but I listened to this and it was decent. It's got a a couple of tracks with a darker vibe that I enjoyed;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbDx__Ry7Fk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gie2USCTn44
Feeling this new one from Sean P
ft. Freddie Gibbs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSZwYZC0EUw
Bonus track from his new record, 'Mic Tyson'. Out yesterday, wanna hear that.
It's on Spotify.
Not listened yet though. Alchemist produced a few of the tracks, which has piqued my interest further; that guy has been prolific this year.
Chinx Drugs - Cocain Riot 2
Really into this tape at the mo, if your into that kinda thing the title blatently suggests haha.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3LTfrRyciw
Really liking the Main Attraktionz album
fuck the haterz etc.
Do It For The Bay is the bets hip hop track I'mve heard this year by a distance
Me too
Bossalinis and the Shady Blaze x Deniro Farrar tape means Green Ova are getting some serious spins at the moment,
it's really good!
my main criticism is lack of Clams and a few others producing
not listened to the new Shady Blaze thing or LWH
<3 do it for the bay
Not had chance to really dig into it yet
What I heard was pretty cool tho, was interesting hearing them on cleaner beats I guess but I'm not in a mad rush to hear it again as I would be if it was on their other tip wit hthe freaky floaty business.
new Earl Sweatshirt song
http://oddfuture.tumblr.com/post/34785686661/new-track-from-earl-called-chum
Sounding great, good balance between melody and menace
I likes it.
Yeah, this is pretty cool.
His technical ability as a rapper continues to astound me. Too many internal rhymes to get my head around. Still think there is much more to come from him. That first verse is pretty deep- has a 'Bastard' feel to it certainly, which can only be a good thing.
Still think there is a lot more to come from Earl.
He's the only one I am mildly interested in anymore.
This track is nothing super special but he always raps well.
Anyone heard the new Lupe Fiasco?
I'm hearing/reading good things.
lolpe fiasco you mean?
He's dead to me.
So bad now. Everything is so heavy handed and cheesy.
I thought similar but read some decent reviews.
From what i gather, there's flashes of the F&L Lupe
but it's mainly shit.
Shame, because F&L is still a very good record. He never had much of an ear for beats though, and a tendency towards the cheesy, so I'm not surprised he ended up here.
time for mk. iii?
GB, what is this?
Wu-Tang Clan get started on their final LP

Action Bronson x Alchemist arrives next Thursday
http://i.imgur.com/sPlrq.jpg
Could be the last end of year list contender, what with A$AP & Ghostface's records getting pushed back to 2k13, and Big Boi likely to end up in the same place.
Only other thing I can think of that I'm interested in is the Underachievers mixtape.
Oh yeah, and Roc Marciano
Hearing really good tings about this.
Awesome
So excited about that Action Bronson record
I think the cover has only made me more excited.
Ha that cover omg.
ATTN: Rolling hip hoppers
Thanks!
Kyle.ellison1 [at] gmail.com
e-mailed!
Oh, got your email Kyle
Sounds like a good plan all around. Just having a think about what I want to contribute.
Nice one dudes
I don't have internet at my house at the moment, so I'm sort of thrashing this out in the opportunities I get (read: at work). Thanks to those that have replied already though, will send out e-mails when I can.
Will email in the next couple of days
have a few ideas...
Also, while I’m here – New Davinci record is available for free. Oh yes http://swtbrds.bandcamp.com/album/the-moena-lisa
Tryin' to think of the mixtapes I've been into this year so far...
Shady Blaze – The Grind, Hustle & Talent
Gun Play – Bogota Rich
Lil Ugly Mane – Mista Thug Isolation
Starlito – For My Foes
Future – Astronaut Status
King Louie – The Motion Picture
100s - Ice Cold Perm
Deniro Farrar & Shady Blaze - Kill or be Killed
Chinx Drugs - Cocaine Riot 2
Lil Durk - I'm Still a Hitta
Can't think what else I've been digging. Need to give the new Main Attrakionz album more of a spin. I see a new King Louie mixtape is around that I've not heard. Kinda wanna give Chief Keef another go, same with the newest Gucci Mane. Not sold on them first few goes tho so maybe not.
Oh yeah maybe I'll give Kendrik a go
He was alright on something last year I seem to remember was he on ASAP Rockys tape? I never heard Spaceghostpurrps album either. Was always into Lil Ugly Mane more on that vibe but I'll give it a go if its worth it.
Maybe I need to check out more Tree n'all
liked what I heard from him last year I think. Man there aint any good names left in hip-hop are there haha. Can't wait for someone to be called Lil Tree or something. Whats with Lil in names lol.
Some great releases there
Meant to reply to your post about Chinx Drugs earlier in the thread - that one kinda passed me by but I listened to some songs on YouTube and it sounded great.
You heard the new Shady Blaze tape? It's possibly patchier than The Grind, Hustle and Talent, but I think it's also got some of the best stuff he's done on it. This one particularly, I can't get enough of http://shadyblaze.bandcamp.com/track/51-50-feat-deniro-farrar-prod-by-ryan-hemsworth
And yeah, I can see you digging Tree. Give his 'Sunday School' tape a go for sure.
not heard that shady blaze tape nope
only just got on top of Kill or be Killed so will do. I think I have Sunday School by Tree DLed somewhere but can't remember if I've heard it yet.
Chinx Drugs is ace just pure euphoric shiny drum machine addled synthy drug music, ace.
no idea who chinx drugs is mind...
just grabbed it off a recomendation from Slackk on another forum cos he's ace at spotting stuff and found it to be killer.
sayin that
some of the best/catchy/popy bits on this are stright up sample business like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3Yb7rk6B1k
Still not checked that 100s, but been hearing good things all round
Got to get on that.
New Big Boi
Get a feeling this album is gonna be pretty pop happy. Nothing to blow me away yet, but I've liked the last couple of tracks alright
http://soundcloud.com/big-boi/lines
Fat Sax says: `I like to call myself Sylvester the Unskippable, because you could push play on my album - you gonna get an hour's worth of a good time.`
Sylvester the Unskippable :D
Sounds fine.
Not sure about the hook though, and I'm absolutely sick of Asop already..
although this song is 100% in my head all day
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OwKK8d9MII
that hook is just too good
Yeah big tune
Kendrick sounds great again. Kid's on such a roll at the moment
dunno whats worse
ASAP or 2 Chainz
Both kinda vapid, maybe they're just there to make Drake and Kendrick sound more interesting/less vapid?
2 Chainz is way funnier imo,
Asop is just a try hard. Tity Boi has done some pretty good stuff really.
he was funnier yeah
not really showed his personality since getting more attention tho. Your right about asap mind.
best one off the new album
none of it matches up to Sir Left Foot though
Had this on a loop recently
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=P_6g9TFK8LE
New Davinci release is pretty chill.
Yeah, this is ridiculous
http://www.spin.com/blogs/roc-marcianos-reloaded-full-album-stream
It's sick
one listen in, and I ain't afraid to call it one of the best of the year. Repeat listens are called for, I think.
I'm pretty sure that Harry Fraud has won 2012
LA MUSICA DE HARRY FRAUD
It's close between him and Ryan Hemsworth for me
I would say Harry Fraud in terms of the amount of people who used his beats, and Hemsworth just as a producer in general (instrumental stuff/remixes/Hyperbolic Chamber Music).
Harry Fraud does have the best tag though.
get the curren$y ep
just the best
Both would be in my top 5
but I dunno, I think maybe Alchemist won 2012. The guy has been all over the place this year, producing his most interesting work ever. The joint tape with Action Bronson which comes out tomorrow should cap it off nicely.
I actually haven't heard (knowingly, at least) anything he's produced this year
Well, as far as full projects there's been his Russian Roulette album which I loved, Rappers Best Friend 2 (instrumental collection), Gangrene - Vodka & Ayahuasca, Domo Genesis - No Idols, as well as Action Bronson still to come.
Then he's just had loads of good placements in which he always stands out. Not always flash, but tailored to the emcee while still sounding like Alchemist.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tr02ZDfuz6E
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VD_YIdH-DRw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JEz1E7OwCM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRZ_hnJy5mc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDfExECG3mU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zv8_Z9G0ggQ
Oh yeah! dled that Domo Genesis tape, haven't spent a ton of time with it yet though
Haven't yet got the Gangrene record which is weird 'cause I loved the last one.
Will check out the others. V excited by the Bronson album, sounds like a match made in heaven.
Yeah, I mean don't really have strong feelings towards No Idols either way, but that has nothing to do with The Alchemist if y'know what I mean?
He also produced these off the new Roc Marciano record;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7okT-PMd6I
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aR13i_ooRvk
Yeah, Alchemist has had a hell of a 2012
As an all rounder, he's just been fantastic.
Hemsworth has been blowing up, for sure.
Very much looking forward to that Bronson tape
Shame I'm not here for the rescheduled show in December now.
Thursday is the Captain Murphy tape too
I've been sucked in by the mystique, and I'm at least curious to hear it. FlyLo says he has a number of beats on it, but I find him hit and miss as a hip hop producer.
I'm really excited for the Captain Murphy
definitely one of the new artists I find most compelling.
Rare Chandeliers is here
http://noisey.vice.com/en_uk/blog/its-here-download-action-bronson-and-the-alchemists-hotly-anticipated-mixtape-rare-chandeliers
Listening and liking.
So much to say about this record
But so tired. I'll be back tomorrow.
Big Boi finally knocked one out of the park
Tip sounds great on this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_3xjer_KZY
T.I feat Andre 3000 - Sorry
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6SdIu10-9c
Now that's a nice Three Stacks verse.
really disappointed with the amount of excitement this generated
it's cosigned by P4K now peeps, get on it.
I like this track yeah.
I really like this song
More-so than the Big Boi one I posted above actually.
Been really enjoying Dre's recent verses, it's just great to hear him rapping again. Bodes well for whenever he decides to release something of his own.
have we all seen John Boy & Shawty Boy - Drug Dat Hoe - Starring Soulja Boy yeah?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaKZ4ngYq-8 truly a touching piece of art
Oh my. This is no good.
jesus :/
Wu Block anyone?
http://music.aol.com/new-releases-full-cds#/3
It's going down pretty well so far for me, nothing new whatsoever but it's a formula I love so I don't mind them sticking to it.
I'll have to check this out.
Didn't even know this was a thing :/
Me neither
really snuck under the radar. Still, lots of Method Man and an Erykah Badu appearance, might have to check it out
Bossalinis & Fooliyones
Steadily growing and growing on me, initially minorly underwhelmed but it's creeping up on me like only the Attrakionz could...
i usually cringe when scottish people attempt to rap
but this wee guys no bad
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAYMJlR9414
and i still cant reply correctly
I'd like to hear him over some non corny production
are any of these newish albums/mixtapes good?
Roc Marciano - Reloaded
Heems - Wild Water Kingdom
Mr Motherfuckin Exquire - Power and Passion
Boody and LE1F - Liquid ep
E-40 and Too $hort - History Channel
French Montana - Mac and Cheese 3
I'll probably end up listening to most at some point - really excited about Roc Marc in particular. listened to one of the E-40 and Too $hort tracks and it wasn't very good, but who knows. I assume French Montana will be rubbish, but it does seem to have a few Harry Fraud beats.
really need to hear the Action Bronson tape as well
Can't speak for all of those
but Reloaded is pretty damn essential. I'm also a fan of the E-40 and Too $hort records - there's a lot to digest, but as ever those guys bring it fairly consistently. Which song didn't you like?
Supercalifragilistic ex be ala hooligan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZzkdODA-GM
yeh had a quick listen to Reloaded - seems pretty great tbh
definitely will be getting a lot more plays.

Best thing he's done since '98
I miss primetime dmx :(

The Gaslamp Killer Essential Mix
is fucking BANANAS. So good. Not sure if it's strictly hip-hop but whatevs.
http://soundcloud.com/everybodywantstobethedj/the-gaslamp-killer-essential
Gaslamp Killer is more hip-hop than most of the stuff in this thread
He just picks killer beats keeps flipping them. If an MC could keep up they'd be hip-hop too.
I've heard rumours that the new Game album is actually good
Anyone heard?
Cannot confirm or deny.
Interested though.
Can confirm that the Clyde Carson tape STSA is awesome if you like Bay Area raps. Just ten tracks.
Also enjoying the Starlito produced by Coop album.
Also this Jay Rock song YOLA is awesome:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBylbdJI0oQ
I've been really enjoying that new Lito too
Gonna check that Clyde Carson and also the new Game album.
I thought Game was on a bit of a run of form with mixtapes a couple of years ago, but I lost interest after RED album.
Get On Down's latest mantlepiece monument released today
http://www.getondown.com/album.php?id=15691
No extra tracks but it sure looks pretty. If you like your classics to come on gold discs in cherrywood trophy boxes, today is your lucky day...
Wait, there's a new Masta Killa album? Out now?
Damn son!
This is nice. Smooooth
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=QZ5Rbla6jJA
I liked a lot of this album, listened yesterday.
Way more brisk than I imagined it to be.
Melanin 9- real gritty shit from n. london.
Album's sounding dope so far:

Another new Starlito tape
http://www.livemixtapes.com/mixtapes/20137/starlito-funerals-court-dates.html
Added to the one from the other week, this one is really good as well. Starlito's definitely up there with my favourite mixtape rappers - he's always bringing something slightly different to the table and I love his weary delivery. I especially like him doing sombre, introspective stuff - but then his Step Brothers collab with Don Trip was one of my favorites from 2011. Speaking of which, can't wait for Step Brothers 2 which I think drops quite soon.
Some highlights from the new one;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sd0trH1RiE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HltfMH0kzDA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAwd5ZRpXOY
He needs to back off a little too
or he's gonna oversaturate like Curren$y.
YES
https://twitter.com/_FRIENDZONE/status/281244167118675968
This has huge potential
Friendzone always bring the best out of Main Attrakionz in my opinion.
I bought the Showbiz and AG album last week (Mugshot Music).
I think Alpoko Don wins 2012
