BEN FOLDS FIVE ANNOUNCES FIRST UK DATES
REUNITED BAND TO TOUR THE UK IN NOV/DEC
INCLUDES LONDON XMAS SHOW
AS YET UNTITLED ALBUM SET FOR AUGUST RELEASE
This winter original members of Ben Folds Five (Ben Folds, Darren Jessee, Robert Sledge) will return to the UK for the first time since Christmas 1999 playing 8 shows in the UK and Ireland.
The tour is scheduled to begin in Bournemouth on November 23. Ben, Robert and Darren first got back together last summer to record three new songs for a career retrospective 3-CD set released in October of last year. Finding it to be fun and feeling that old magic, the three original members decided to go the distance and record a full new album at Ben’s Nashville studio earlier this year.
The reunited band will debut this summer in the States playing just 4 major gigs in June at Mountain Jam in upstate New York, Chastain Park in Atlanta, the Bonnaroo festival, and wrapping up at Milwaukee SummerFest. Following the upcoming August release of the album, Ben Folds Five will play a full North American tour in September-October, drop down to Australia and then begin the UK/Ireland run of dates.

I have fond memories of their albums. I never got to see them live first time round, so will go.
I turned some friends onto BFF, but were aghast when I suggested that they should next listen to some Andrew Gold, Billy Joel and, errr, early Elton John.
really great band, my uncle was a fan and gave me loads of tapes and CD's in the 90's, they were one of the first real 'indie' bands I got into. Not really followed his solo stuff, but will be a great nostalgia trip. In fact my uncle (bass) me (drums) and brother (piano) have played a couple of tribute sets!!
how people who liked the Five don't like the solo stuff. It's a bit different, but not that much. There's no growling bass but other than that it's still a mixture of the quiet and raucous, the beautiful and occasionally the silly...
but also general tone, especially Silverman onward, you're not allowed to be throwing out 'WRONGs' at me.
I'm a colossal fan. I have every release he's put out in any form bar an annoying elusive Japanese special edition, and I'll probably keep buying his stuff 'til he stops. But: his solo stuff has been on a steady decline. His live performances , however, more than make up for that. It's the new material on *record* I find specifically worse.
but I really love the new stuff. OK, there's the odd (relative) dud on recent stuff such as "Hiroshima", but even that same album also had "Cologne" and "Kylie From Connecticut" on it, for instance...
is still one of the best gigs I have ever been to.
I can't see how a show at Brixton Academy at three times the price, over 12 years on can be better, but I might go along just to make sure. Or I might have a little day trip to somewhere else. Hmm...
didn't that one end in a strop after they ran out of time without completing their set? Even a slightly off-par BFF gig is better than pretty much anything ever.
I freely admit to losing all objectivity over this news. Massively excited.
i was ever so slightly disappointed they didn't play emaline and i'm not super keen on all the new tracks but overall the set list was pretty perfect. if i had enough money i'd try and get to one of the london dates too.
and yes it was brilliant. Initially only a Brixton date had been announced and I made a plan to go to that with friends. But when they added one that I could walk to... it would have been rude not to. Really happy I'm going to see them again.
I guess Emaline got dropped because they could see how they were doing for time. They did a full two hours and the Academy has a strict curfew. And is a shit venue, but there was no way I wasn't going for this.
oh
yeah. Anyone know how much>
£37.50
ouch.
Worth it for the Five I reckon
That's excluding fees so expect a shade over £40
£27.50 for the non London shows.
I saw him at Brixton back in '06 (IIRC)
Amazing show. Will have to try and get tickets for this.
omg yes.
Manchester Apollo

Ben Folds Five as in THE Five (3)?
yup
all back together. Sledge is one of the most intelligent bassists out there IMO, musically at least.
Oh nice!
Haven't listened to them for absolutely years but this'll be a great nostalgia trip

I'm not one for getting excited over reunion shows, but I'll make an exception for them
I have fond memories of their albums. I never got to see them live first time round, so will go.
I turned some friends onto BFF, but were aghast when I suggested that they should next listen to some Andrew Gold, Billy Joel and, errr, early Elton John.
same here
really great band, my uncle was a fan and gave me loads of tapes and CD's in the 90's, they were one of the first real 'indie' bands I got into. Not really followed his solo stuff, but will be a great nostalgia trip. In fact my uncle (bass) me (drums) and brother (piano) have played a couple of tribute sets!!
No nostalgia trip
There's a new record. And if you were a big enough fan to play tribute sets, I'm amazed you never gave the solo stuff a go... do it! Do it now!
do not do it now
the solo stuff has been on a downward curve after rockin' the suburbs... and then he went electro-zany and it makes me want to hurt mys-
ANYWAY BFF YES
WRONG
I got Rockin the Suburbs and wasn't into it
my brother is a diehard fan (can play all the songs) and he really doesn't like the solo stuff either so I haven't heard his latest stuff.
I really struggle to understand
how people who liked the Five don't like the solo stuff. It's a bit different, but not that much. There's no growling bass but other than that it's still a mixture of the quiet and raucous, the beautiful and occasionally the silly...
Its very, very different
and nowhere near as good.
OK...
I'll resort to the old "if you haven't heard it, Spotify it" gambit. :)
if you can't hear how different it is in terms not only of arrangement
but also general tone, especially Silverman onward, you're not allowed to be throwing out 'WRONGs' at me.
There are some absolute gems in his solo career though, despite the albums being far from classic

massively agreed. He's still got something in him that can
pen wonderful, wonderful songs, and he still writes lyrics beautifully, especially when he does his stories about characters.
I was being a little flippant with the one word response
but I really love the new stuff. OK, there's the odd (relative) dud on recent stuff such as "Hiroshima", but even that same album also had "Cologne" and "Kylie From Connecticut" on it, for instance...
holy shit
...i am so excited by this
Ben Folds Five at The Albert Hall in December 1999
is still one of the best gigs I have ever been to.
I can't see how a show at Brixton Academy at three times the price, over 12 years on can be better, but I might go along just to make sure. Or I might have a little day trip to somewhere else. Hmm...
Ironically
didn't that one end in a strop after they ran out of time without completing their set? Even a slightly off-par BFF gig is better than pretty much anything ever.
I freely admit to losing all objectivity over this news. Massively excited.
Awesome news!
Didn't get into them until after they broke up, so this is one reunion tour I can get fully behind! :D
Ha

Thanks for the link Kmart!
Got meself a couple for Brixton.
Tickets purchased for Bristol (start of tour, where I live) and Brixton (end, where I can catch up with friends)
1) Joy
2) Wallet pain
£10 discrepancy between London and the rest of the UK is pretty unprecedented. Usually a couple of quid isn't it?

the bristol gig was brilliant!
got a lump in my throat when they played missing the war as the second song.
it took them a while to get going, but once they did they completely owned it. this blog is pretty much spot on; http://thestoryandthetruth.wordpress.com/2012/11/25/on-ben-folds-five/
i was ever so slightly disappointed they didn't play emaline and i'm not super keen on all the new tracks but overall the set list was pretty perfect. if i had enough money i'd try and get to one of the london dates too.
