The Annual Record Store Day Thread - Share Your Haul
What time did you get up? How long did you queue? Which store did you goto? Did you meet any nice people?
What did you get? (share a picture or tweet it to us @drownedinsound )
What was already sold out?
What was everyone panic buying?
Didn't go out to RSD, why not? (Asks the chap still in his PJs, still slightly irked after queuing to buy that Deftones covers album last year only to discover there were nearly no copies of it in the UK)

Just the Nick Drake/Jeff Buckley split cassette EP for me.
Queued from 9pm last night meaning i've caught cold on my kidneys, and had to sell my passport to some jihadis to fund it, but i'm happy with my purchase.
Go on then
http://t.co/VfkiXJWN
Almost everything I was after. Copies of the White Stripes and Karen Elson singles didn't arrive in the wilds of Swindon, but luckily someone else has grabbed me copies in Bristol. Gutted I missed the Stax boxset. Oh well.
Was about 15th in the queue when I arrives at 7. Not too bad, but I arrived much later last year and was at the front. It's definitely getting more popular.
Still queuing here, been here since 7.30
Don't think I can be arsed next year, this really isn't fun.
where's 'here'?
Music Exchange in Nottingham
Got the Refused back catalogue including shape of punk to come on clear vinyl, and on 7" fotl, pelican, mastodon/flaming,lips and orbital.
Knackered now. Quite pleased with my haul.
im swinging past town in half an hour
want me to bring a croissant?
got up at 4, went to rte
didn't even buy a RSD release. got the Best of Serge Gainsbourg, and a Field Day ticket. just for the experience i guess, met the people i wrote for, etc.
didn't get anything
No Refused, no Mastodon/Feist, no Zomby, no Metallica...probably didn't stock it because I was at least 12-15th in the queue. Boo to RSD!
just had a shower
put a scott walker album on to download.
you have the best insults
really want to hear the Metronomy woodwind EP
if you have an online stream/download, please post :)
Can't be arsed to leave the house.
Might download a few albums later though as Primavera preparation.
you could just listen to our Record Store Day playlist
it's about the least you can do to support RSD http://drownedinsound.com/news/4144760-playlist--record-store-day-2012
Wait
``the least you could do`` to support a day whose entire concept is going to record stores and not just listening to music online, is to listen to a playlist online? Wut.
I'm only heading out now
Primary objective is to get a non-RSD release (first johnny foreigner album), anything else I get is a bonus.
knowing me I won't even get the jofo album
walked straight into Beatdown just after 9.
Got zomby and shabazz palaces, then queued a fair while at rpm mostly just because they deserve to be rammed and got the tallest man on earth release.
there were mental queues at reflex when I went past at 9 and it still looks about an hour long. I'd like the mclusky repress but I don't fancy waiting all that time and it was amongst the first to sell out elsewhere apparently.
turned up 20 mins after opening
my store hadn't ordered in the two things I wanted most (Human Don't be Angry and the Gruff Rhys split 7") and somebody got the last Flaming Lips split 7". Ended up moping around and found hidden away The Czars 'Sorry I made you cry" reissue on blue vinyl. Got that, happy with it as I love John Grant. That's all.
Not unless you want to start queuing at 2am.
I queued at Flashback at 8 and was 3rd in the queue
I queued at Flashback at 8 and was 3rd in the queue
That's lovely
Just heading in now.
Not that interested in much this year. If OneUp in Aberdeen still has Mclusky Do Dallas and Human Don't Be Angry, I might part with some cash, otherwise meh.
walked past sister ray about 15 mins ago
ridiculous queue, was at least back to wardour street. will go past again on the way home but not sure I want anything enough to wait that long.
Went in phonica records, didn't have anything I wanted in though.
Did get a bearsuit vinyl off their website on the bus though for £3, so not a total loss.
has the flaming lips collab LP leaked yet ?
can't imagine it will for a while, not till the US wakes up at least
it's not even 9am on the east coast yet
I got to Polar Bear in Brum at 6:40.
4th in the q they didn't have the white stripes seven inch that I was after, but picked up
Feist/Mastodon split 7"
Mclusky do Dallas
Ryan Adams 7"
no worries, you can get it here (obligatory look-how-much-they're-getting-sold-for-on-ebay-post)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WHITE-STRIPES-RECORD-STORE-DAY-2011-2-x-7-RARE-45-THIRD-MAN-RECORDS-2012-RSD-/251044307255?pt=UK_Records&hash=item3a73682137#ht_500wt_1287
Think those were last years releases
Managed to get the white stripes 7'' though, thought it was a red and black swirl record, but mines clear red (whinge)
so it is
forgot about it
checked online and got the natural snow buildings 7" from norman records
Going to Resident in a bit
probably won't be able to get in.
Not really that fussed about any RSD releases apart from the Animal Collective one. I'm going in to get Dross Glop & maybe the new Jon Porras one.
Went in at about 3
Very pleasantly surprised to find out that they still had the AC record in stock. Picked up Feistodon too 'cause it sounds interesting. Too busy to look for Jon Porras so I'll just go back in the week. RSD = not too bad!
Action Records - queued at 8am, opened at 9
The main thing I wanted was the Slow Club LP, but the one thing that I thought no-one would buy sold out, they also sold out of Beach House, happy with my haul though
- Animal Collective
- Smugglers Way
- The White Stripes (red 7'')
- M83 (etched 7'')
- Bat For Lashes (etched 7'')
- Future of the Left 7''
- St. Vincent 7''
- Arctic Monkeys (purple 7'')
Kinda poor now..
Jarock87 that was last years
Not sure that I'll be short of ebay otions though
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=hand+springs+white+stripes&_sacat=0&_odkw=hand+springs&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313
cunts.
my band was meant to have something out
didn't get sent in time! we're going to sell it at gigs though, it's all cool.
Went to Concorde Music in Perth...
arrived about 9, an hour after they opened, a lot had gone after the initial rush (missed out on Ryan Adams and MC5/Afrika Bambatta) but still managed to pick up the Flaming Lips/Mastadon 7" and Otis Redding/Aretha Franklin 7". Pretty chuffed
£17 for Smuggler's Way - madness!
if anyone got it: what is it like? was it worth it?
Got it for £15
Think it's very reasonable for a fanzine and 5 flexidiscs, specially when they're flogging off LPs for £20, not read through it yet though..
most actual fanzines that come with a flexidisc cost about £2-3 though.
HELP! I'VE BEEN CONNED
Olafur/Nils 10"
Beach House 7"
Gene Clark (US rsd release) 7"
Chocolate Watch Band (US rsd release) 7"
Anywhere LP
Flashback Essex Road. Not much of a queue when I arrived.
Anywhere as in Flower Travellin' Band? Nice.
I think it's that new Mars Volta/Mike Watt/Sleepy Sun band
will need to hear that first!
Yes, Mars Volta dude
Nice turquoise vinyl.
New band fro
Much as I'd have loved to have the Gene Clark 7"
11 quid for a 7"! Forget it. Stayed on the shelf (...well table).
Went to Truck in Oxford
Got:
Feistodon Split 7"
Human Don't Be Angry LP
King Creosote & John Hopkins - Third Swan 7"
Belle & Sebastian - Crash 7"
Along with some other non RSD stuff.
These are actually my first vinyl purchases. Exciting! Now to buy a record player! Any recommendations for a reasonably priced one? Don't need anything fancy or high end, just something cheap and reliable.
project essential is a great entry one
don't bother with naff automatic cheap ones, I used a 50 quid auto one for a couple of years but the sound starts to deteriorate after a while and the cartridges arn't often changeable.
just got the graham coxon single from sister ray
Didn't have anything else I wanted though. Oh well.
I don't know how much I like this RSD thing
It seems to be more about collecting 7" rather than actual music appreciation. Jus' sayin'
seems pretty pointless to me, emphasising the worst parts of physical music (limited editions, too expensive, queuing) instead of the good stuff (chatting with people, looks good).
also the whole thing with limited editions really annoys me. the reason that small labels do ltd editions usually is because they can't afford to print loads or there's not enough people to buy them, not just to make rare stuff. it's a co-opting of underground culture to look 'cool' really, just like that zine which costs nearly £20 that, like i say above, would probably be about £3 when done by actual independent zine makers.
I just feel that the whole focus is off
Record Store shopping isn't about finding 'exclusives'. It's about browsing, talking to staff, listening to stuff, getting recommendations, finding incredible records you'd never heard of/never seen before.
I get the impression that most RSDers don't go into RTE and browse the racks, but instead queue up for their Radiohead/Animal Collective exclusive 7", get out, go home and brag about how they got hold of one before filing it away for years on end.
Last RSD I participated in went to Flashback's second hand paradise in Crouch End and spent 2 hours finding amazing stuff and talking to the staff. Isn't that what we should be encouraging?
I agree with this a fair bit.
It's all too rushed and formal to be able to experience the positive points of record shops, you only get that if you pop in during the week before to see what they've ordered and what they're excited about.
One place I popped into today (windows in Newcastle) only had a couple things on shelves on display behind the counter, the rest were in boxes, out of sight. So you could only get something by asking specifically for it, they didn't even have a list to search through. Just made it so formal and impersonal.
The prices are another thing, but that varies. I got an LP, an EP and a 12 inch single, all previously unreleased, for the price of a Cure/Velvet Underground re-release.
I look at it in simple and slightly selfish terms
I like going to Beatdown Records and doing the talking thing anyway, so if there's a day in which they get loads of revenue which will help them stay open then i'm all for it.
If people want to visit the place once a year to pay loads of money for stuff i'm not bothered about that's fine. More power to those people - give the record shop your money so we can continue to enjoy it!
good point, well made
also
I like seeing people walking around town looking cheerful & holding records. I reckon MOST of em will enjoy them and not sling them on ebay.
I get what they're trying to do
the mechanism just sorta comes across as cynical though. Buying songs you already own on a different coloured vinyl. Really emphasises the collector mindset, like people who art as an `investment`. People hardly ever seem to talk about the music on the discs that they're buying, just how rare it is or what colour it is.
Went to rough trade east about 7
Got
Animal collective ep
Lcd Soundsystem losing my edge reissue
Andrew Bird 10"
The Fall 7"
White Stripes 7"
St vincent 7"
Was really surprised how well organised it was year. Managed to get in and out pretty quickly and the staff were really helpful
I got
Ty Segall & White Fence. It's mint so far!
One copy of the Poison Idea 7" in each Newcastle shop :( so that was a no go especially for someone who hates queuing and didn't get out of bed til half ten.
also got the new Haino/O'Rourke/Ambarchi lp and Turning It Down by Noxagt too. And a free tote bag!
hey and that Tomahawk box set is (relatively) cheap!
£24 for 3lps isn't bad. Although it is one of those supergroups that didn't quite live up to expectations.
Yeah, but it did give us this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt856_nRxQk
And the last album with Stanier doing native american percussion is really cool
I still haven't heard that one!
But yes they certainly have some good tunes. Anything with Kevin Rutmanis involved gets my vote.
Hmm, love Mit Gas
but probably right
It was €45 over here!!!
Even if I had a record player that's €€€€€.
I went and bought a copy of Wire and the re-issue of Hototogisu's Floating Japanese Oof! Gardens of the 21st Century
that haino/o'rourke/ambarchi release is incredible
definitely one of my favs so far this year
the second LP is nuts
the heavy riffing at the end, proper 'world is ending' stuff \m/
a few years ago i walked past one store and it looked like a rammy
cant be arses with it. i accidentally found the flying lotus remix lp and the parlophone 7" collection from last years RSS in Greene, TX in a country and western store. almost apent $200 on stuff but reigned it in.
i am not a big fan of it tbh
I got
VU - Loaded pink vinyl
VU - Sweet Jane/Rock-n-roll 7"
Bowie - Starman 7" pic disc
Morrissey - Suedehead 10" pic disc
Gorillaz 10"
Also picked up the Kindness LP
and then went and bought a bunch of 2nd hand vinyl too - Simon & Garfunkel, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions and some DFA 12"s
....
these days I have no idea if people are joking on here or not
Black Friday is the lesser known spin off from US Record Store Day
Sort of the "Ooooo, RSD makes us loads of money, let's see if we can get away with another one".
er
Record Store Day came into being in 2007 when over 700 independent stores in the USA came together to celebrate their unique culture. The UK followed suit...
USA get even cooler stuff than the UK
I beg to differ....
I would love to be able to get some of the UK RSD releases just as I'm sure some of the UK folks would love to get hold of the US RSD releases....I guess it's all location location location
Couldn't find Future Of The Left
so I bought Smugglers Way. It was really quite expensive though, and probably not worth it - if RSD wasn't always my birthday weekend I don't think I'd bother.
Here's my haul
https://twitter.com/#!/PrincessQuatris/status/193629524439728128/photo/1/large
Got up at 5:30 to head to Dada Records in Chiswick for 6:40 ish. Me and mates were only keen, so ended up first in the queue, and no one joined us for ages. Could have so slept for longer.
Had a fairly good time until they opened the doors and people flooded in. Being polite we got shoved out the way, so queuing up first was made a waste of time. Managed to blag the stuff I wanted though, so worked out alright, just about.
For anyone who can't see, managed to grab:
Slow Club - Paradise
Zomby - Where Were U In 92?
Feistodon
Mastondon/Flaming Lips split
Smuggler's Way
Bat for Lashes for the gf.
Going to a less popular record shop seems like the way to go for these. RTW and E seemed like hell holes. Popped along to RTW to see about grabbing the Bat for Lashes one (I accidentally nabbed Coldplay instead of BfL, so had to trek around London to find it for the gf. Finally got it in Universe of Sound) at about 11 and it had a queue all the way down the road. Ridiculous.
Anyway, happy with what I got, and glad it's all done so I can get on with listening to it all.
Where Were U In 92? - so good
enjoy it
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4336308?community-latest#r6708410
It isn't even a band name, man
apart from the fact it's fucking mentioned in the original post you flapbarrow
Went for Transverse Temporal Gyrus and Where were U In 92
didn't get either, obviously. I hope most people really dislike the animal collective EP so then will try to flog it.
David's music in letchworth
Managed to pick up the Andrew bird 10" and the Icarus line live album, but most importantly the heads bbc sessions. Worth the 1 hr spent queuing
Love that shop. I opted to go to Sister Ray today though...just more stock.
Got to Sister Ray at 6
was 73rd in the queue. By the time the doors opened there were hundreds. Had fun however, if it's not for you then it's not for you. Got everything I wanted (that they had bought into the shop):
Animal Collective Live
Anywhere LP
Refused Shape of Punk (clear vinyl!)
Hot Chip Daphni mix 12"
Deerhoof / Of Montreal 7"
Tortoise 2 x 7"
Beach House 7"
MC5/Afrika Bambaataa 7"
Feistodon
Xiu Xiu / Dirty Beaches
Then after breakfast went over to Rough Trade East and picked up the Metronomy woodwind 7" and the Oscar Cash plays Metronomy 7" which both look fun, and the Sufjan Stevens / Rosie Thomas 7"
Didn't get (due to money, not availability):
Domino 5 x 7" flexidisc + fanzine looked AMAZING.
Tomahawk 3lp boxset
pretty tired now.
I stayed in bed - still got a hangover
not really feeling spending money I don't really have on records I don't really want
+ last year I queued at Rough Trade East for a while
fucking depressing load of shit that was
I think I h8 Record Store Day - just an excuse to trick people in to buying a load of crappy overpriced vinylz because they are limited edition
still, if it actually helps keep records stores in business that's no bad thing -- I guess I'll just completely ignore it as I did this year
i'm so pumped for this flaming lips album
it's 10ish now...must not be impatient.
If anybody wanted the Human Don't Be Angry
chemikal underground are selling it online. Just ordered a copy. Really feeling this album, Monologue:River is a beautiful track. Playing it super loud at the moment.
My first experience of Record Store Day today...
Queued from 4am at Resident in Brighton. Got everything I wanted except for the Coldplay 7" - was 44th in the queue. Got served by 10am...6 hours standing ouch! But got some great stuff, met some great people and generaliy had an awesome time. Some guy in front of me spent £1,000! Got free cakes in the queue as well, nice :)
Got an awesome video of the queue as well...
When I get back home later I'll upload it somewhere!
I love my Bowie Starman Picture Disc quite a lot.
6 hours queuing for a Coldplay 7"
That's the most damning indictment I've read of RSD2012
Went to Piccadilly Records in Manchester
I originally went at about 4am, but after about half an hour, i couldn't be bothered so went back home and slept and went back at 11.30am, I was in the queue for 3 hours but I got everything I wanted so I'm pretty happy.
Shabazz Palaces - Live at KEXP
Zomby - Where were U in 92?
Animal Collective - Transverse Temporal Gyrus
Beach House - Lazuli/Equal Mind
Chuck Persons - A.D.D. Complete
Things were cheaper than I thought they would be aswell, most of those were less than £10 so it was decent.
I'd like to share my haul
but I'm too freakin' disgusted that there are currently FORTY EIGHT copies of the Kate Bush picture disc (out of 1000) for sale on eBay.
I know - Record Store Day. It's just like Field Day. Every year we moan and every year we go back for more.
Disappointed not to get the Go-Kart Mozart single but got pretty much all the other things I was after. If anyone in the London area is desperate for that ludicrously overpriced Arcade Fire single, Banquet in Kingston had loads of them and it wasn't exactly flying out the doors.
Don't live anywhere near an independent record store.
Surely this RSD thing should apply to HMV? Makes things a bit more inclusive.
*doh*
Pleased with my haul
Adele - 21 on CD
Now 82 on CD
Justin Bieber bedding
Pack of four Daim bars
All from Asda in Corby.
:D
I live nowhere near a record store
so me and a bunch of friends made the journey to Edinburgh. By the time we got there it was about 11:45. First we went into underground solushuns, then later moved onto avalanche.
I managed to pick up
Animal Collective - Transverse Temporal Gyrus 12"
Xiu Xiu/Dirty Beaches split 7"
The Wedding Present - 4 Chansons 10"
I got all of those from Underground Solushuns, and they were all my RSD exclusives.
Went to Avalanche at about 12:30, it was pretty quiet and I picked up
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over the Sea 12" (just had to)
Veronica Falls - Veronica Falls 12"
Monoganon - Songs To Swim To 12"
Dante - Monochrome EP 10"
Lingered about a bit longer in Avalanche and saw Withered Hand play a set which was sweet. Kinda wish I'd make it to VoxBox to catch Neil from Meursault and PAWS play but alas, it was not to be. I had great fun.
https://p.twimg.com/ArA-WGTCIAAABR_.jpg
my cat is currently fascinated with the xiu xiu ep. he can't take his eyes off it.
also, I asked for the st vincent single in US and it was sold out, and I really wanted the sigur rós single but that had just sold out everywhere as I was asking. avalanche hadn't put an order in for the admiral fallow lp which was a shame.
ALSO
i didn't have to queue anywhere. there was a really friendly, almost relaxed atmosphere in all the shops i visited today.
Hey avalanche-goer
We'll have the Admiral Fallow LP in on monday, it was just late shipping out. Was due to arrive midday today but didn't.
hey hey thought you didn't work there anymore
also i really should have gone, it just totally passed me by though
was just in helping out for RSD
aw, you should've just asked me! Could've kept you something aside :)
I'm sure this is exactly what happened last year too
I fail @ records :(
didnt go
its not for me, to me buying records isnt about queing for hours etc. its good that it brings in business for the shops but thats about it.
Queued at sister ray from 8 and got in at half 11 :(
Bought the Mclusky and Zomby. Headed over to phonica and got esg. Headed to RTE and got the mark Stewart and AC.
Then went to Flashback and got Bodily Functions by Herbert for 7 pounds.7 POUNDS!!!
Unfortunately for me...
I live in Belfast, and none of the Record Store Day exclusives made their way over here into any of our indie stores. I picked up an E.P by a local band whose name escapes me at the moment, and a Smalltown America vinyl compilation, but that's it.
RIP Head
Same here
pretty grim for record shopping in Belfast now and I didn't fancy driving to Dublin or Derry to be told the stuff I wanted wasn't in stock. Here's hoping a great independent record shop opens in the not too distant future.
2 loaves of bread
some stellas
a bag of carrots
the guardian
mclusky do dallas
fuck sake i forgot about the mclusky one.
Anyone else getting up early tomorrow
to illegally download rips of the Record Store Day 7s?
First proper Record Store Day today
Got to RPM for about 10:30, got in at 11 but everything I wanted had sold out so I just grabbed a croissant and a cup of coffee and chatted to the guys for a bit (always a lovely bunch so it's nice to see the place proper rammed out). Then took a jaunt to Reflex, queued for a bit longer and, luckily, they had pretty much everything so I came away with:
St Vincent - Krokodil (the one I was most after)
Caitlin Rose - Piledriver Waltz/Love is a Laserquest
sigur ros - Ekki Mukk
Aretha Franklin/Otis Redding - Respect
Also my free RPM raffle 7" was a great Kool & The Gang record picked at random. Jackpot!
I mean, sure, the whole exclusives thing is a bit rubbish but I met a bunch of ace people in the queue and while watching some of the bands RPM had on.
Disappointed nowhere seemed to have that Flaming Lips collab LP
Flaming Lips collab LP is US only, sadly.
Went to RTE at about 11, had to queue for about 15 minutes
Guess they didn't have the Gold Panda 12" or Glassjaw- Worship and Tribute in, or they sold out first-thing. Bit of a shame. Would have liked the gJ record.
Grabbed Refused- The New Noise Theology, Neon Indian- Hey Girlfriend and Olafur Arnalds/Nils Frahm- Stare.
What Gold Panda 12"?
I'll be mightily upset if I missed it.
fao groucho
a heady fwends rip has surfaced.
Flaming lips collab LP
http://flaminglips.com/shop/item/1417/the-flaming-lips-and-heady-fwends-(rsd-release)/
Not sold in the UK but you can order it from here I believe. Too expensive for me though
all on soundcloud atm. http://soundcloud.com/slowonerveoaction-4 gonna wait for someone to take them from soundcloud and .zip them to dl though.
the ke$ha song is good
I enjoyed queuing up at Sister Ray. My fave record shop in London so best place to do it.
They'd sold out of 'Shape of Punk to Come' and a couple of others I was after which was annoying.
Still I got:
Mclusky Do Dallas
Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent
At Magnetic West 7" (Future of the Left0
Catalogue / Preserve / Amass (Steven Wilson)
here's the flaming lips lp on mediafire:
http://www.mediafire.com/?9n4b3e9kap9jjo4
thanks!
i really like their sound at the moment. the groovey robot bits rock and the slow sad synthy bits are weirdly emotional.
yeah this surprisingly good for a record store day release
it's like a proper good album
all the collab EPs they released last year were really fun as well
RSD- Twist and Shout, Denver, CO
I got to the store at 8:00am this morning and the queue was about 100 strong already. By the time the store opened it was well around the whole building, I'm sure. T&S seems to have RSD down to a science- they placed all of the releases in the back of the store w/ all the vinyl filing them alphabetically- pretty easy to find what you're looking for if you were nimble enough to navigate the crowd in each aisle (this was rather fun, really!) Great comraderie ("Hey--can you grab me that?" "Sure! Here ya go!") Word was McClusky sold out almost instantly, from what I heard. My haul included:
Refused- Shape of Punk 2LP/CD/DVD thing
PiL- One Drop EP
The Knack- Live in LA 78 10"
Medicine- Buried Life/Shot Forth LPs
Artic Monkeys-7"
Civil Wars- Live at Amoeba cd
I did pretty well, considering (better than previous years)
Freebies in my RSD bag included a really nice looking SubPop sampler, Coachella sampler, and other bits and bobs.
Pricing....
Sounds like US pricing has been a bit more reasonable than UK ($26.99 for the Refused 2LP/CD/DVD)..that was the most expensive item I bought. Artic Monkey's 7" was $7.99 which is a bit steep for 2 songs :\ I did see that PiL Live at Rockpalast 3x12" for a whopping $42.99 at another shop and politely declined.
Got to monorail in Glasgow at about 8am
had a good wee chat about all sorts of obscure music with a couple of the guys in the cue, must have been about thirty in the cue it was definetly much busier than last year got everything I wanted apart from destroyers-rubies LP my haul was as follows
The Wicker Man OST 7" which is awesome mono only had 15 I got the last one
beach house 7"
tangerine dream 7"
nils+olafur 10"
animal collective ep
doctor who sound effects lp
velvet underground-loaded lp
ty segall and White fence lp
Tangerine dream lp
and last but not least a the wake boxset with signed booklet that was an exclusive to mono good day
it was fun for me
went to a nice shop in Montreal, showed up an hour early and was 5th in the queue. Spent an hour talking to nice people then they let everyone in and it was pretty civilized. Grabbed everything I wanted except Do Dallas but have ordered it online from Too Pure directly now so not too fussed, I got :
-Destroyer's Rubies reissue
-Flaming Lips Heady Fwends
-Refused reissue
-Animal Collective EP
-Death from above 1979 reissue
also splurged on :
-Lee Hazzlewood - LHI Years 68-71
-Morphine - Cure for pain reissue
don't think these two were part of record store day
all in all a very good day even though I ended up spending a lot more than I intended too. No guilt though as I think everything I got is well worth it and didn't cave in to any of the gimmicky releases
Thanks for the heads up on the McLusky Do Dallas being online.
I'm sure they'll get in trouble with the organisers for it though.
Just checked the Too Pure site....
I wasn't able to tell if the McLusky Do Dallas LP is the white vinyl version or not...
Think I saw somewhere
that it was clear red vinyl
whatever...
RSD is orange.
Idk about the version they're selling online. Doesn't really matter.
Had a great day
Got to Rough Trade East around 5am, got chatting to a few people in the queue. Was one of the first batch in, felt a bit sorry for the staff as some people were absolute bellends when they got in. Thought the layout and organisation was spot on this year. Picked up the following haul :
Future Of The Left 7"
Orbital 7"
Lianne La Havas 7"
The Flaming Lips / Mastadon 7"
Belle & Sebastian 7"
The Fall 7"
Dracula 1972 AD 7"
Wicker Man 7"
Feist / Mastadon 7"
St Vincent 7"
M83 7"
Laura Marling 7"
Deerhoof / Of Montreal 7"
Beach House 7"
David Bowie 7"
Sigur Ros 10"
Kate Bush 10"

Tegan And Sara LP

Mclusky LP
: O
Wow
That must have set you back a fair bit. And made your arms longer carrying it home.
boy got taste
Just over £200
I stopped smoking a couple of months ago and I've been putting the money I would've spent on fags into a pot just for RSD :D
did you pay £7 for each of those 7"a
fucked that up.
but if you did pay 7 quid for each of those do you not feel incredibly ripped off? it's unreal. it's a rip off for the stores and the buyer. just can't see the point of it all really. destroys the actual magic of record buying.
I wrote an article on local record store for local magazine
highlighting RSD, and am now on my way to spend some cash there. To be continued...
Got to RTE at 7.20 in by 8.10
Organisation was a dream this year. Plenty of stock, despite being about 150th in. Everyone was friendly (staff & punters) and managed to get:
Arctic Monkey7"
Feist/Mastadon
Radiophonic Workshop Out of This World
Domino records fanize x5 flexidiscs
Clash 7"
Pistols 7"
White Stripes 7"
Orbital 7"
I also bought one of the most beautiful records ever, Superemes Baby Love on Red Heartshaped vinyl. Couldn't stop showing everyone.
Then spent the afternoon at RTE to see some great bands, beer and sunshine.
Let RTE have its haters, best out of the three years, although heard some queuing horror stories about Sister Ray
Afternoon was spent at Rough Trade WEST not east
I didn't see Keane.
spent my day doing CPR
i had better things to do than queue to go in a shop all day when i can buy records every other day of the year.
Not a sinle thing anyone has said
Has made me feel like i've missed out. Not even the Mclusky 7".
Went to Monorail at 6pm.
Bought Battles' Dross Glop and Errors' Have Some Faith In Magic. On CD. Not limited. Nothing at all to do with RSD.
Saw Snowgoose play in Monorail. Spotted a couple of mates and had a chat over a couple of pints. Got the bus home. Lovely stuff.
RSD would be a million times better if there were no exclusive releases at all.
Whatever floats your boat, but I can't see the difference between queueing and wetting your pants over artificially limited releases and the 6AM opening of the Next Boxing Day "Sale" or the midnight release of a new iPhone. Actually, I can. You'll be able to buy some more trousers from Next and new iPhones will be stocked in the Apple store at some point during the next few weeks. The records will only be available on eBay.
well you're a barrel of laughs aren't you!
defo more fun than the dawn queue crew
cheers
well i went to visit relatives in Aberdeenshire
and left the record buying to my little brother, who apparently got me all the stuff i was after
Nice user name
Went to Sound Knowledge in Marlborough.
Wonderful record shop. I turned up at about 10:30. Hadn't made any proper list of wants this year to avoid disappointment and wasn't prepared to queue for the doors opening at 8:00. I came away happy though. Got the Orbital, Garbage and Django Django 7"s, the FSOL 10", Gilles Peterson Brazilika (1/100!!) and the one thing that I really did fancy getting which was the Upsetters Blackboard Jungle Dub box with red, yellow and green records. Had a good listening session tonight and am pleased with all of it.

RSD Part 2
From Sound Machine in Reading today picked up Hot Chip 12", Animal Collective 12", St Vincent 7" and Rodrigo & Gruff 7". That should do for this year but I'll have a scout round on the internet next week to see what's left.
Here are my RSD pickups. Queued at 6am outside Mono in Glasgow.

only RSD thing I got was Richard Hell 7"
from Sister Ray around 1pm. Pleased/surprised as I really wanted that, but they didn't have the Cymbals EP - anyone get hold of that one? Also really wanted Deerhoof/Of Montreal, but obviously not enough to queue.. Still, got The Chap's Well Done Europe LP for 1.99, Lawrence Arabia CD album for £1, then a Randy Newman LP for £1 in Reckless AND my pre-order of Jack White's album along with free 16 saltines 7" came through the post 2 days early! Good day, but when I think about all those it's kind of shit paying £6.99 for 3 Richard Hell songs, so I try not to.
also beforehand at 11.30ish went to Rat Records in camberwell & picked up some second hand stuff but sadly missed the DJ Food set.
Go Kart Mozart
cover of Roger Whittaker's New World in the Morning from Probe in Liverpool. Nearly broke me neck getting the record player down from the loft to listen to it
I didn't buy any RSD specials
but I did get:
Cocteau Twins - Stars & Topsoil (2 x 12")
The Righteous Ones Of The Blazing Rockets - Rockette (7")
Robb Johnson & The Irregulars - Once Upon A Time (CD)
Souljazz Orchestra - Rising Sun (CD)
Really pleased with my Cocteau Twins purchase. I strongly advise you all to give The Righteous Ones Of The Blazing Rockets a spin, they're bloody marvellous:
https://www.facebook.com/therighteousonesoftheblazingrockets
Still don't get it....
Would you people normally buy every:
Future Of The Left
Orbital
Lianne La Havas
The Flaming Lips / Mastadon
Belle & Sebastian
The Fall
Feist / Mastadon
St Vincent
M83
Laura Marling
Deerhoof / Of Montreal
Beach House
David Bowie
Sigur Ros
Kate Bush
The Cure
Tegan And Sara
Battles
Andrew Bird
Animal Collective
Mclusky
etc...... Vinyl release?
If so, you guys are loaded and have very big homes. If not, why are you buying these records?!?!?
Wy do you have to want to buy every release
just to buy one RSD release?
huh?
Why can't I just buy
e.g; A Beach House 7" just because IO like Beach House, rather than the fact that I want to buy everything Beach House have ever done?
OK, maybe I made my point poorly.
Going in and picking up a 7" by a band you fancy listening too? Sounds great, that's what I believe record shops are for.
Going in and spending £100+ on overpriced exclusives by artists you're not even especially into? That seems odd to me.
I collect records of a few of my favourite acts, Bright Eyes, Phoenix, Saint Etienne, Primal Scream and Wilco mostly. Last year there was a Saint Etienne 7" singles box-set, it was £40-50 (I think), that just seemed crazy money to me. There didn't seem a point to it. The ltd edition version of the next Bright Eyes lp, I'll probably buy. A RSD exclusive 7" of a track from an LP I've already got? Nope, sorry, I just don't get it.
It seems to be about collectibles for collectibles sake.
I guess maybe if it was really expensive, then yeah.
I understand that. There didn't seem to be that many really expensive things from what I could see though.
From my perspective
If I had £7 spare, I would have had the choice between £7 for a 7" of something I already had, or £7 towards most of the cost of say Sleigh Bells - Reign of Terror. I'd have gone with the latter and got an album instead of a track.
everything was stupid expensive. Unless you normally pay £7 for 2 track 7"s,
20 - 40 quid for lps? FUCK THAT!
The Zomby album was the most expensive thing I got
that was only £13 for a whole album, Shabazz Palaces was £5.49 for a 4 track live EP and Animal Collective was £9 for about 25 minutes of music. Those were pretty decent prices I thought, although yeah, in hindsight the Beach House one was pretty damn expensive.
If I had the money I would yes
I only buy vinyl releases these days, money permitting. As I said above, I don't smoke anymore, I very rarely drink these days. It's my vice so to speak.
Fair enough
My view is that there must surely be some stuff in the shops that would be a better purchase than some overpriced LTD 7", often of a track the artists never had any intention of releasing.
If these releases weren't promoted as RSD exclusives they wouldn't budge from the shelves.
sort of agree with you there
there are loads of fancy collector's items for sale on RSD which I wouldn't mind having, but it does overshadow other more reasonably priced releases.
That said, lots of releases of new music were on sale for RSD.
lots of releases of new music are available every week
I go into my local record shop and I don't ever have to que for them!
Well yes...
...but I'm the vast majority of RSD-goers also visit their local music shops and purchase music.
Which is precisely why I think it's a bit of a waste of time
I always thought RSD should be about getting new people through the door. Certainly that's what a lot of the organisers seem to like pretending it's about. But it's become (if it wasn't always) basically a bit of a fundraiser for independent record shops along the lines of a £1000-a-plate charity dinner or something. Not that that there's really anything wrong with that, and if people enjoy it then fair enough (I've never had any desire to go), but I can't help thinking it's a bit of a missed opportunity and certainly not the popularising PR campaign it markets itself as. If you went into HMV or a supermarket or something today and asked everyone who was buying a CD what they thought of RSD, I reckon 98% would never have heard of it.
I'm happy for RSD to exist in its current form...
...but it would be better if it were supplemented by a significant across the board discount on all stock. If they cut the price of everything by 50% (something meaningful that made me buy it in a shop rather than through amazon, etc), then I'd be in there stocking up. The 7" fetishists could mix with the wider music buying public in a frenzy of music fandom.
At present it just seems to me to be a way of spending a lot on cynically re-packaged vinyl. That just heightens the idea that 'real' music fans are elitist vinyl junkies interested in exclusivity for the sake of it. Record Store Day should emphasise what is good about record stores - hearing the music with others, coming way with a lot of exciting new stuff that you've not heard before and chatting with other customers / music lovers. Record store day in its current form is not going to make "the downloader" embrace music in physical form - not one bit.
my local did just that
20% off all non-sale and RSD items, 40% off between 4-5pm on Saturday and Sunday.
That would have been awesome if it had happened at my store
and I would have bought quite a bit too.
I appreciate it's not easy for every store to do
depending on margins etc, although presumably more popular record shops could risk doing so in favour of better cash margin. That said, I guess they don't have any reason to do that if they're established...
I think, rather than discounts,
if I was in charge of promoting these things I'd be trying to secure indie stores exclusive rights to stock albums by people who are actually popular - not necessarily Adele or Coldplay (that'd be slightly optimistic), but someone who's likely gonna trouble the charts a bit. Even if it's only exclusive in indie shops for a fortnight or something before hitting HMV and teh internets, you're still gonna get a lot of new faces through the door who may just like what they see.
I mean, I don't really know if that's plausible, but it's gotta be better in the long-term than stocking "limited-to-100-copies" exclusives by artists who would probably struggle to sell 500 copies of anything even if it was new material and not a couple of album tracks pressed onto flexidisc and sold at £12 with a free bag of haribo and a child's drawing of a dog to make it seem personal.
What funkycow said
x 100
I buy mine from Amazon and I don't even have to leave the house
I think all the people who are trying to apply logic
to the act of buying on RSD are missing the point. The whole act of buying records is emotional compulsion that I've had in me ever since I can remember. RSD is fantastic for record stores and fans alike. The fact the records are all released at once, in limited form is a huge part of the appeal. I don't buy every Animal Collective/Sigur Ros release - I could never afford to. But over the last two days I've really enjoyed listening to my records over and over.
But...
What's so special about that Animal Collective release (for example), why couldn't you do that any week? Is queuing really that appealing?
Seconded
I mean it is essentially queuing to buy songs regarded by the artists' as not LP worthy.
I got..
Refused's 'Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent' which i am extremely happy with, however i wanted 'The Shape of Punk to Come' as well but it had sold out.... And it pisses me off how people buy certain records and then put them on ebay at a massive mark up. This was the case when i got home to see 'The Shape of Punk to Come' go for around 50quid on ebay. Bastards.
fucking hell...
just searched ebay for Record Store Day-related items. Some people are right cunts.
Some people are taking the commercial aim of RSD to its logical end point...
the daft thing is it's probably worth more than my original pressing of The Shape of Punk to Come.
It's not the people selling it's the buyers which cause the problems with them going on ebay. No fucker buy off them and problem solved.
It's the same with RSD overall, I don't blame the shops for selling the records at ludicrous prices, it's the morons who buy them and que up.
My experience in Brighton with video and photos...

FYI
Banquet are selling their left over RSD stuff, right now.
http://www.banquetrecords.com
really suprised....
they still have copies of the Mclusky Do Dallas.....(!)
I got The Fall and White Stripes 7"s
within an hour of them going on sale on Banquet. Phonica have also put some stuff online from RSD
I want to thank RSD...
for turning me on to Medicine, Refused and resurrecting my interest in Mclusky... job well done!
