February 2012 - Highlights
I know the month has only just begun but after the success of the January thread, I thought it might make sense to start early with what you're looking forward to in terms of releases. Many of Febs finest are streaming or being reviewed already. And I thought it might be interesting, as we collect the best bits of the month (to be digested at the end of the month) to reflect on whether the things we were looking forward to end up being what we hoped.
This thread is basically to discuss albums you recommend and to share links to songs, vids, etc which have gone online this month.
Predicting my album of the month will be BLONDES. Stream it, especially if Errors was your album of January or Oneohtrix, The Field, Luke Abbott, etc float your boat: http://drownedinsound.com/news/4144408-album-stream--blondes-self-titled-debut-album
Absolutely adore THE SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS record which is due out at the end of Feb.
Some DiS-friendly picks from the Feb release schedule...
Week 1: Twilight Sad, Blondes, Ben Kweller, AIR, Sharon Van Etten, Cloud Nothings (UK release)
Week 2: Shearwater, Gotye, Barry Adamson, Field Music, A Place To Bury Strangers, Islands, Tennis, Young Magic, Anais Mitchell, Earth, Pulp (re-issues), Simple Minds (re-issues)
Week 3: Grimes, Sleigh Bells, Perfume Genius, Cursive (!), David's Lyre, Lambchop, Peter Broderick, Beth Jeans Houghton, Wooden Shjips, Tindersticks, Gonjasufi, Azari & III, Hanne Hukkelberg
Week 4: Memoryhouse, School of Seven Bells, Xiu Xiu, Olafar Arnalds, Fanfarlo,
Also out in Feb: Ting Tings, Dodgy, Speech Debelle, Emilie Sandie, Paul McCartney, and InMe
...whilst we're on the subject of release schedules, does anyone recommend anywhere online that's good for seeing what's coming out? Thinking of improving DiS' and it's either gonna be a case of data-entry or taking a feed from somewhere.

Cursive
Shearwater
but also Anais Mitchell, Perfume Genius, Tindersticks, Lambchop, Wooden Shijps, Grimes and hopefully something amazing I've never heard of before.
February is when new music starts up again.
anais mitchell should be worth a listen...
Shit!
Didn't realise there was a new Anais Mitchell release, Hadestown was brilliant.
Feb
January such a slow start to the year, but things are looking up. The Sharon Van Etten album is streaming and is the first outstanding album of the year for me. Shearwater, can't wait for this, love this band. School of Seven Bells has sounded good from what I've heard so far.
Gonjasufi has an album out this month?
If so great! Although i'm totally skint this month i can just about afford the twilight sad and sharon van etten one's next monday then i'll have to wait until next month to pick up school of seven bells and memoryhouse. And gonjasufi too if indeed he has an album coming this month.
There's been absolutely zero talk or buzz
about the Gonjasufi album. Really surprised. Maybe Warp want to sweep it under the carpet.
re: gonjasufi - here's what andrzej but on the blurb for reviews
- 'MU.ZZ.LE', although short in it’s length, is huge on messages. Political, social and spiritual interpretations that define him as an artist. Written on the road, it was an outlet for Gonjasufi to challenge himself. It’s the response to all the adrenaline, aggression and anger he felt travelling the world, it’s a spectrum of his creativity and a testimony of how one man’s passion and determination is often misunderstood as anger. “There’s a duality that exists and to deny it, is the biggest mistake”. The albums downtempo strings, heartbreaking soul, reanimated hip-hop and crackling haunting vocal stylings are stitched as a running thread throughout each song like a patchwork quilt.
Thought that Gonjasufi thing was more of a patchy EP than a proper album
(haven't listened to it though)
It's out already.
Came through my door yesterday. On first listen it's quite good. Different to the debut but thats to be expected without Gaslamp producing. Some brilliant drumming on some of the tracks.
yeah I think Jan has been slow...
and that both the Cloud Nothings and Errors albums, whilst good, have benefited from having not much competition. Still DiS throws out 8/10's like bl0wj0bs in a wh0rehouse.
what happened to my post?!
basically; shearwater and tindersticks are solid 8/10s at least and i can see them being in my top 10 of the year. tindersticks especially is sublime and i think itll still grow on me.
was it in the other thread?
I deleted it seconds after posting it due to typos but it took about 5mins to GO AWAY
oh, i wasnt aware there was another
in that case; that's lovely.
does anyone recommend anywhere online that's good for seeing what's coming out?
has been asked a lot and I think the general consensus was that there wasn't any one large comprehensive list. Gap in the market maybe?
Indeed. I wonder if it's something we could communally do? Ie not everyone so it isn't full of bumsnogger and sweet janye....
there's a new bumsnogger record coming out?
Might be quite nice
could get a couple of 'cartographers' to work through distro release sheets/store pre-orders/news etc.
^This
I check NME.com on a Monday morning. Its a small list but covers more than just NME type bands.
Pitchify is handy and so is the New Album Releases playlist on Spotify.
Sean - DiS needs to get on the case! I like the idea of a communal one. I'm pretty sure someone on the music board started a weekly thread for releases. I think it only lasted a week.....
Pitchfork's quarterly upcoming releases articles are all right.
Only really comprehensive for the first month of each quarter though.
Other than that, you could just check pre-orders on places like rough trade and insound? The records shops with the widest range.
Quite a few this month that i'm looking forward to
Grimes, Sharon Van Etten, Twilight Sad and Demdike Stare's Elementals gets a CD release.
Hanne Hukkelbergs new one sounds interesting too. It got a glowing review in Wire but I've barely seen any mention of it elsewhere. The one song I've heard is very good http://www.musicquack.com/2011/08/hanne-hukkelberg-new-album-set-for.html
Just found out there's a new Tenniscoats album as well
Could be good
only listened to bits and pieces of that Sharon Van Etten album...
on soundcloud but it all sounds absolutely great.
looking forward to lots that have been mentioned
and of the top of my head also out this month - geographer, damien jurado, cursive, of montreal and mouse on mars' first release in 6 yrs which could be interesting.
Waaaw ..
so many bands I like are releasing albums this month.
Was disappointed by the Errors lp last months, hopefully things will be looking up now.
My favourite from last month was Cloud Nothings - I see they're still topical in February. :)
you were disappointed with have some faith in magic? :(
I listened a lot
to Magna Encarta last year - great track
I just feel the rest of the abulm is Errors - by - number.
I will listen to it again but not won over first time round.
I wanted it to be good ...
consequence of sound
have a good release calendar :
http://consequenceofsound.net/upcoming-releases/
Sorry for the self publicising...
... but at http://www.spotimy.co.uk we collate the new releases that are available on Spotify and also have a playlist that updates each week if anyone is interested.
I'm pretty behind the new Yppah album
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIfxTbDOA00
First track to be taken from it.
That new Dodgy album
is getting good reviews pretty much everywhere so far. Just sayin'.
Re: the other stuff
I am massively excited about the Field Music album.
I actually think it's gunna be really good
now we just need The Wonder Stuff to do something.

I'm holding back my judgement for now...
Big Shearwater fan, not much has grabbed me in 2012 and became obsessed with the early tracks which were released. And I've enjoyed every listen so far, with numerous favourites...but its a different album to their previous work, more visceral and direct and less a creation of a very natural world to lose yourself in. I think it could grow to be an excellent rock album, but part of my mourns a slight loss of majesty (very slight mind, You as You Were is beautiful).
Same feeling here
but I haven't been a big Shearwater fan like you. It could be a grower. I listened to it for the first time in full today.
Some tracks sound 'forced' to me, as in ... let's get uptempo for the sake of sounding urgent.
However, some tracks are really beautiful. A mixed bag?
How you feeling about this now?
Still haven't quite made my mind up
The Icarus Line
have re-issued all of this back catalogue with expanded editions to help fund touring the UK with Killing Joke http://theicarusline.org/
good reminder about awesome they are (and Stevie Chick is) here http://steviechick.wordpress.com/2012/02/08/loose-lips-sink-ships-so-lets-just-be-friends/
Mickey Pearce - Don't Ask. Don't Get / I Am
huge.
Field Music
Plumb got a 9/10 today http://drownedinsound.com/releases/16798/reviews/4144467
i'm glad you liked shearwater, seany
have you 'eard tindersticks yet?
nope
not got my mitts on that yet but then again i've never been much of a fan of theirs...
St Vincent video for Cheerleader
http://youtu.be/LEY9GJAm8bA
My vote goes to Anais Mitchell
Have people started hearing it yet? The eight I gave it in the review was a real borderline nine. Also, glad to see Tennis getting a nice response - still loving them a lot. Was of Montreal this month too? Really adoring that - hard work, but such a glorious grower. Such a monster compared to false priest, and actually less scattershot/total mess than I first thought.
And for anyone interested...
My thoughts on the Of Montreal record: http://musosguide.com/of-montreal-paralytic-stalks/20150
(You did suggest that we post reviews, right Sean?)
yeah, of course
share away
In that case...
... check out my review of Blondes, which I also love http://musosguide.com/blondes-blondes/20237
Are Therapy? so far off the radar these days?
I thought that last album 'Crooked Timber' was easily their best since their mid-90s heyday and have high hopes for 'A Brief Crack Of Light', out this week.
School of Seven Bells remixed by Scissor Sisters?!
http://soundcloud.com/vagrantrecords/sviib-lafaye-remix
Patrice & Friends
follow up Cashmere Sheets with the brilliant Champagne Saunas. Pay what you want on their Bandcamp. Juke/footwoork-style edits of r'n'b numbers, it's a hoot
'The Last Goodbye' by The Kills
Bloody marvellous. Just made it single of the week: http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4144493-this-weeks-singles-06-02-12--the-kills-sleigh-bells-m83-first-aid-kit?singles
Objekt - Cactus
Peverelist - Livity Sound #003
The amount of music being released in February
IS TOO DAMN HIGH
Burial - Kindred EP
my picks of this week's streams
http://drownedinsound.com/news/4144511-five-for-friday--poli%C3%A7a-ema-the-kills-chromatics-perfume-genius
Milagres - Glowing Mouth
atmospheric, romantic, anthemic pop.
Could well be underrated by people on this site as they sound slightly like ... Coldplay.
Imo, very different though, and you can't deny them a way with a tune.
On Spotify.
you got taste!
because ..
I've got pretty much the same musical tastes as you? :p
Great minds etc. :)
Ben Kweller?
Do me a favour.
The Smoking Hearts - Victory!
entire album for stream here.
http://themusic.com.au/audio/4215/the-smoking-hearts-victory
if you like punk/hardcore/rock 'n roll.
Nearly the end of the month...
What songs, mixes and albums you been loving?
Albums:
Cloud Nothings (was a February release in the UK anyway)
Anais Mitchell, Sharon van Etten and Sleigh Bells all sounding promising too.
Field Music - Plumb
Keith Fullerton Whitman - Generators
of Montreal - Paralytic Stalks
Patrice & Friends - Champagne Saunas
Rome Fortune - Voyeur
Tindersticks
Absolutely brilliant album. Was meant to be seeing them play this weekend, but Stuart Staples (the singer's got laryngitis) - gutted.
Yep, Tindersticks for me too.
Seeing them in Berlin on 7 March, hope he's recovered by then.
Anais Mitchell
Burial
Shigeto
Matt Elliott

blurs the lines between orchestral modern classical/indie/post rock exceedingly well

Listen to the Tindersticks album too this morning. Wasn't bad, didn't really blow me away.
