Lets try a recommendations thread
Okay, so I was thinking the format could be; someone posts an artist they like, in order for other users to reply with recommendations of similar music. Thises (to suggestions) would help determine good suggestions. A few pointers:
Keeping replies, other than recommendations, to a minimum would help declutter. Longer posts are fine however (to a point of course)
And yes, last.fm does this...but it shouldnt be a patch on the wisdom of this community. Nonetheless, dont choose something too obvious (radiohead fans might like thom.yorke etc).
I'll get the ball rolling...

Rolo Tomassi
you must have heard Melt-Banana, right?
if you haven't: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQ6Sk8Aj-SQ
but see them live. they're not even in my top 50 studio bands of all time, but they're unquestionably and gloriously the best live band I've ever seen. and I've seen Cardiacs
I have heard them, but a few years ago when I wasn't really into that kind of music
I should probably try listening to them again. That track sounds fucking amazing actually.
also...this is a parallel move that bears only a tangential relation to RT
but Melt-Banana got me thinking 'Japanese, female singer' and whaddaya know it's Shiina Ringo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKuW0mvTTUY
^^^the album this song opens is one of the most astonishing pure-pop records ever made

good luck finding it tho :/
Julian Lynch
jazz & world tinged noise pop
Paavoharju
I'll try resurrecting
Four Tet
A few suggestions
Fridge (Hebden's old band - if you've not heard them, 'Happiness' seems to be the most Four Tet-esque)
also
Mice Parade (I guess a good comparison would be with 'Pause', albeit more 'post-rockish' and with a bit more of a Spanish influence in places)
Gold Panda
also, if you're fan of recent...
you can't go wrong with Mount Kimbie
Just listened to a few Mount Kimbie tracks whilst researching Beacons Festival
I'm impressed!
which era of Four Tet?
From more recent Tet
Daphne (caribou's dancier arm) is reasonably similar
Floating Points
Theo Parrish
Moodymann
MOMUS
PLEASE HELP
or The High Llamas
The first Miracle Fortress album
definitely
Roy Orbison
Everly Brothers
Patsy Cline
Del Shannon
Dirty Projectors
or, ya know, stuff in that sort of quite kinetic chamber pop style (if that makes sense)
Deerhoof
Delicate Steve
Talking Heads
St. Vincent
Lucky Dragons
Ponytail
in the months since this post
I've become obsessed with St. Vincent, so definite thanks for that!
This is getting to multiple bumps now...
but I really would like to know if anyone had any recommendations for:
Julianna Barwick (or just general vocal loop stuff)
