Wrong Animal
Bruce Springsteen
No
He has written several fantastic songs though
I hate it when people go 'He's...The Boss, isn't he' when they're asked why they like Bruce Springsteen
it is the correct answer, though
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4309882#r6413389
look, everyone!!
He has used a putdown of himself in a sarcastic way!! What a witty man!!1!!
YES
JFC Troll Lord!
O_O
It's all saxophoney triumphant tuneless words
No, it really, really isn't
Dumbass.
^has only ever heard one Springsteen song.
Which must have been Duran Duran - Rio
Great trolling
untrue
Every song on Nebraska, cheers.
But surely Nebraska is
all saxophoney triumphant tuneless words?
;)
yeah, god, the sax on Highway Patrolman is so shrill and the lyrics of the title track are far too triumphant.

Drowned in Springsteen
The entirety of "The dark side of Town" is pretty sensational.
Still not a massive fan though.

What has Bruce Springsteen ever done for us?
Um
Played three hour sets as standard, and done completely different set lists with half hour request sections every night?
The above...
...humour fail
HAHAHAHAHA great trolling
Rosalita alone is better than anything you'll ever do with your life
ha
ha
ha
ha
ha
this has to be one of the most ridiculous things anyone has ever said
This is exactly why I never use forums until I have something devious to gain from it.
The world is insane. Springsteen used to be the best on the planet...maybe he still is.
I think I just heard Ronnie Ancona on QI say 'You've really erased the stakes now'
I can listen to a Springsteen song and think "Yep, that's an impressive song by a quality songwriter"
But the appreciation is 100% intellectual/critical. When it comes to the heart/soul factor, Springsteen leaves me completely cold.
WHAT IS THIS THING YOU HUMANS CALL... SPRINGSTEEEN
*sparks come out, tape reels unwind, Kirk makes out with green alien lady*
I like the one about the hard working blue-collar American who is a little down on his luck
proper giggled out loud at this
I have 15 Springsteen albums.
That's quite a lot.
Everyone knows Born To Run is ace.
It's like all those Bon Jovi songs people claim they don't like.
I read an article all about that one song once...
...and got really excited that there must be a treasure trove of greatness I wasn't aware of. Then I actually listened to 'Born to Run' and I was sooooo disappointed. I think the article had convinced me 'The Boss' didn't actually sound like 'The Boss' does.
I do like Nebraska though. He's certainly diverse.
Is there a worse group of people on earth...
...than the ones who claim to/try to hate Springsteen? I mean, seriously.
It's not all Tunnel of Love and saxophones you know... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-LIEr43_wk
hey,
Tunnel of Love is actually alright you know!
* really fucking amazing and one of the best 'divorce albums' ever
Woah woah woah...
...I love Springsteen! Tunnel of Love IS actually alright! I love 80s Bruce as much as anyone (Tougher Than The Rest is in my top ten Boss songs).
I was just saying that people think of 80s Stadium Bruce™ and saxophones and shit and assume they've heard it all. They're wrong.
For the record I think Nebraska is very, very overrated. Heresy and all that but, I don't care...
yes, you are now dead to me
Nah, I enjoy the hits
Can take or leave the rest though to be honest.
You really think Dancing In The Dark
is better than anything off Darkness On The Edge Of Town or Nebraska?
i kinda do
Dancing in the Dark...
...is as good a pop song as ANYONE wrote in the 80s. Anyone.
As a result, it is up there with Springsteen's best material if you ask me.
I was in the tuneless/saxophone camp...
... until I was persuaded to give him a proper listen by some friends whose opinions I generally respected. Shelled out for The Essential Bruce Springsteen comp and quite enjoyed it, enough to move me out of the "tuneless saxophone" camp but not enough to make me actually want to buy any of his proper albums. And there did seem to be quite a lot of songs about waitresses from New Jersey.
However I've always kind of suspected that Springsteen might be one of those people where a 'Best Of' actually isn't the ideal introduction... Any thoughts, people?
Darkness On The Edge Of Town
I'll give it a go.
God bless you, sweet Spotify.
Best Of's are the worst introduction to Springsteen because
they put all the big power ballads on them, which I love but it took me longer to love. So yeah, Darkness, Nebraska, The River. Side 2 of Born In The USA is fucking great though.
Although Blood Brothers is only on The Best Of so you have to get it for that really. And Amerian Skin (41 Shots)is only on The Essential. FFS.
Can we start ranking his albums yet?
Someone else go first...
KIDA>.....
...bah I haven't even got the energy
1)Nebraska
2)Darknes On The Edge Of Town
3)The River
4)Born To Run
Today:
Darkness On The Edge Of Town
Nebraska
The River
Born To Run
The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle
Born In The USA
Devils And Dust
The Rising
Tunnel Of Love
The Ghost Of Tom Joad
Greetings From Asbury Park
Magic
Working On A Dream
Human Touch
Lucky Town
Would have put the three disc live album about number 4.
Also even if you discount all of his recorded output
He wrote Because The Night
i guess i have no soul
and i am properly stupid and evil, but british people will listen to anything as long as it's american, won't they?
not really
in fact, i'd say that that works even better in the opposite direction; you guys will lap anything up by the uk
Nebraska is faultless
Sean Penn even made a movie out of one of the songs, not that that means anything. Great album, and great opening track.
the film is really good actually
Listened to Darkness On The Edge of Town after this thread
Sounds like Meatloaf. I'm out.
...of my mind
The Bruce Springsteen Born to Run Glockenspiel Addendum
http://www.popmatters.com/pm/review/cory-arcangel-the-bruce-springsteen-born-to-run-glockenspiel-addendum
"For those not in the know, Bruce's Born to Run record is littered with glockenspiel... The Born to Run record itself contains 3 songs that feature the glockenspiel, ... For this project, I decided to create an addendum to the original and compose, play, and record glockenspiel parts for the songs on Born to Run that do not already feature the instrument (Tenth Avenue Freeze Out, Backstreets, She's the One, Meeting Across the River and Jungleland). I have made a 12inch vinyl record (signed, edition of 300, hand silk screened covers by kayrock, etc, etc, etc). Basically you can play the vinyl at the same time as the original recording, and you got your self a seemless mix with even more glockenspiel then originally provided by Bruce and the band. If you listen to my 12inch, you just got glockenspiel and alot of silence (yes, it IS susposed to be silent most of the time,... I had to do it in Bruce's style, and this meant very sparse arrangements...)."
http://www.coryarcangel.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Cory-Arcangel-Glock-Mix.mp3
The only thing worse than the op is DiS's apparent disbelief that there are people out there who don't care much for Springsteen.
If we're talking about this sort of music give me Knopfler any day.
It's not disbelief
It's a belief that these people are mad.
i've got three words for the author of this thread:
Fuckoff Cunt
.
living on a prayer
only kidding
*applauds thread*
I'm On Fire gives me the chills.
He's fucking great.
im on fire gives you the chills?
Thats irony of Morissette proportions.
Seeing as we're on an MBV tip this week
I'll state here my wish for Bruce to do a 30-minute 'holocaust section' before the 3rd verse of Born To Run
75 replies to it
fuck me
I want a wife with tits
Who just smiles all the time
In my centrefold world
Filled with Springsteen and wine!
is saxophoney triumphant tuneless words a genre?
are there any other artists like that?
Your parents would have to have been brother and sister for you to think this opinion is valid.
Really tried to like Springsteen
Gave him a real good shot.
But always come back to Warren Zevon instead, who's about 10 times better
hi
I've never heard a bruce springsteen song that I've liked.
admittedly I haven't tried very hard to find one, but there you go.
You do realise he wrote S Club's "Reach for the Stars" don't you?
Care to rethink your position?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reach_(S_Club_7_song)
don't understand how a blue collar worker perennially down on his luck
couldn't find anything to like about Springsteen.
I can see that Springsteen is a great songwriter & performer
but he leaves me absolutely 100% stone freezing cold.
He's written plenty of good songs - probably
But he's no God as he is frequently portrayed. Born To Run is still his best album. If that one didn't exist, he'd have a scattershot audience of stupid followers trying to get him into the R&R HOF, like Hold Steady or someone.
wasn't aware there were so many spingsteen fans on DiS
thought you freaks would be poo pooing all over him
Proper bloke, proper masculinity, proper emotions, proper hard graft
If he was English, the bedwetters would treat him even worse than they do to people like the Kayas, or Paul Weller.
that doesn't make any sense
he could only exist as an American.
I kind of agree
I remember reading about when Brett Anderson called him a "dullard." Bit harsh.
I put people who don't like The Boss in the same bracket I do people who don't like Fleetwood Mac or Steely Dan
the MASSIVE IDIOT bracket
Just reminded me to watch this again.
