Jetplane Landing
I was listening to this band at the weekend and it struck me they've been quiet for some time, unless I've missed something.
Really do seem like a top band, foolishly I never went to see them live when they were active.

This the wayyyyy I think the summer should end
I really liked that first album, it was the soundtrack to my university years.
Yeah great band
3 fantastic but completly different albums. I know Backlash Cop was divisive but it was my album of the year 2007(?).
Pretty sure they're not together anymore despite no official split up announcement.
I thought they split...
I don't anything by them, never found any of the records in shops.
<cough>
https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=jetplane+landing
Or indeed:
http://www.smalltownamerica.co.uk/
(They're in there somewhere)
pft, amazon's not a record shop.
no impulse purchases you can make on your way home.
Impulse purchases you can make at your desk :)
but I know what you mean.
You should check them out though.
I very much intend to! :)
They've done very occasional sets in Belfast in the last couple of years
though with Fighting With Wire's rhythm section in place of their own, so it's essentially Fighting With Wire plus Andrew Ferris.
Only seems to happen on special occasions, the ones I'm aware of being the re-opening of the Ulster Hall and one of LaFaro's three album launch shows. I missed both.
I was told a while ago
they were working on one last album, but with FWW busy and Andrew running an increasingly busy STA out of Derry these days it's probably gone back in the priority list. Three fantastic albums (and an EP likewise), in any case.
NOW I CAN NEVER PLAY THAT WHITE MUSIC AGAIN
One of my most favourite bands ever. All three albums are solid gold. Absolutely love Backlash Cop; it was my favourite album of 2007 also.
I thought they were working on a new record actually. I did an interview with Andrew Ferris a few years back and he said he wanted to tour Backlash as it was 'made to be played live.' Hmm...guess Cahir is well busy with the very awesome Fighting With Wire.
ONE SEVEN HUNDRED CIVILIANS...WE SURVIVED! WE SURVIVED! ONE SEVEN OH! *crunchy riff breakdown*
A LADDER! A MOONWALK! A BACKFLIPPING PIRATE!
Shucks, you're a man of taste
What jetplane album should I order first?
I think given your taste for the heavy rock, Once Like A Spark
would be a good place to start. Give the 30 sec snippets on amazon a listen:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Once-Like-Spark-Jetplane-Landing/dp/B0000BXBYH/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1291649007&sr=8-2
All 3 albums are quite diverse. Their first, Zero For Conduct, was more lo-fi sounding, but still riff-tactular in places. Backlash Cop (most recent) is proper experimental - rap, funk, punk rock, all mashed together. It's a concept album about funk/jazz musicians/boxing!
ooh, and the Els Quatre Gats EP is definitely worth a purchase
has got 2 of their best songs on it.
They're all on Spotify too
<3 Jetplane.
Atoms Dream In Technicolour is deffo one of my favourite songs EVAR.
SO YOU LIKE HIP HOP????? WELL I'VE GOT SOUL
For every God there is a censor and a corpoation gain!
GO!
WE'RE BUILT OF FRACTIONS,
CHANCE, DECISIONS, A *MULTITUDE* OF CONCEPTS.
He really is an excellent lyricist Andrew Ferris, can we have a JPL lyric quote sub-thread? I'll start:
Architecture, geometric proof,
Consciousness, nouns, adjectives then books
Goya painting pictures of Spanish inbred kings
Inspiration, as skylights cave in
Cameras chart imperceptible spin
This isn't oooooover!
This isn't over!
I'd kneel and take a bullet in the back, kid. But would it stitch the disenfranchised to the MASSES!
:D Can we also have a JPL sub-sub top 5 songs thread as well?
1. Acrimony
2. I Opt Out
3. White Music
4. The New Standard
5. The Last Thing I Should Do
1. Atoms Dream In Technicolour
Then, in CHANGING order: My Fundamental Flaw, Conventional Thought, Tiny Bombs, What The Argument Has Changed, Calculate The Risk.
I've not heard Backlash Cop!
AND OBVS SUMMER ENDS.
I'm holding the pages of that boring book
You left by my window so I took a look
the top 5 should be
The Last Thing I Should Do
This Is Not Revolution Rock
Summer Ends
Dizzy Gillespie For President
Effect A Change
I'm so happy all this stuff is finally on Spotify! I can include "The Last Thing I Should Do" on EVERY SWEET MIX I EVER MAKE
I also really like
I am the journalist bereft of all metaphor
too busy to read his own papers
but he's NEVER felt so, HE'S NEVER FELT SO ALIVE
<3 totally listening to them on my way home tonight.
Yeah this has made me put on Once Like a Spark.
You were the best thing on it!
I said let's be lets be honest!
Top 5 (very hard, off the top of my head)
1. Summer Ends
2. Sam Cooke
3. Brave Gravity
4. Interstate 5 (what number interstate is it again?)
5. What the Argument has Changed
6. Song for Sonia Sanchez
7. Do It... Now!
8. Why do they never play Les Savy Fav on the Radio
9. There is no real courage...
10. Atom Dreams...
So top 10 and in no real order :P
and it strikes me now so very very clearly,
that the world has always centered on your demands
and can't stand your company a single second longer,
A
SINGLE
SECOND
LONGER
HUH!

*air punch*
Woo! Excellent!
I really thought they had split.
I love Jetplane Landing.
I took my username from the lyrics to Tiny Bombs infact.
They're very sorely missed & I sincerely hope that we've not heard the last from them. Would love to see them live again.
Keep the love coming
Hopefully Andrew will spy this thread and organise a long overdue show in London. Been threatening to for a while but nothing has ever materialised. Think its the 10th anniversary of Zero For Conduct being released next year, so would be a good time to do it!
They could get Distophia and Reuben to reform and support, haha!
Yeah some tweet him or Cahir the link to this thread.
(someone who knows how to do such things)
just sent him an email
WHYDON'TTHEYPLAYLESSAVYFAVONTHERADIO?!?!??!
Answer: Because they're heinously over rated. The question should in fact read, WHYDON'TTHEYPLAYJETPLANELANDINGONTHERADIO?!?!?!
As I pointed out and Andrew also picked up on
that came out in the year Let's Stay Friends was released and thus they started playing Les Savy Fav on the radio.
i've tried to get them to play nottingham on and off for the last four years
i'll email andrew and then three months later he'll say he's having a kid or whatever. i should email again actually.

i saw them once
no one was dancing, it really pissed them off.
Great band.
I've got nothing more to say...
GENETICALLY FUNKY
we'reallstillwaitingforpunktomeanSOMETHING!
A London show next year would be ideal, bit optimistic though really
Anyone get the live album thing they released back in 04 with 'There is no Courage...' being the single?
I did, what brilliant value for money!
yeah I've got that, it's great stuff.
Andrew gets really angry and shouty on the live bits. :D "LAST GIG OF THE TOUR! I WANT YOU ALL TO GO FUCKIN' NUTS! WHY ARE WE RESTRAINED???"
Yeh and in 'lights out' he gets angry too
this just makes me want to see them more.
hahaha, doesn't he start properly shouting at someone? Can't remember now.
So eager for people to dance. :D
HOW MANY PEOPLE BOUGHT ONCE LIKE A SPARK? SHOW OF HANDS!
NOT ENOUGH! NOT ENOUGH!
<3 so much.
LIGHTS OUT! LIGHTS OUT!
They tell me there are only 6 real metaphors
the sun,
the moon,
the stars,
the air,
the ocean,
the earth.
I chose to be angry
but failed to make the killer speech
it took me so long to notice
that we could HIDE! SO EASILY!
Oh father make me, a lethal instrument...
of words so deadly they will never mount
A COUNTER ATTACK!
CLIMBING UP THE FACE OF MILES DAVIS...
I saw Africa from his eyebrows, I got a clear view of the Lebanon
WAIT, DID I JUST SAY GENITALS?
I probably wouldn't have got into JPL for years if it wasn't for 'SAUNTER'
Derry's own 'United States of Whatever'.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KatNqUASEzE
a couple of years ago Fighting With Wire walked off stage after just one song. While everyone was wondering what the flip was going on these sirens faded in. "NO" thought i, "it COULDN'T BE" the sirens got louder and louder and what do you know jetplane landing (or rather the fww + andrew lineup smicarus mentioned) were on the stage playing 'Backlash Cop' while i roared in my unimpressed friend's ear "IT'S FUCK-ING JET-PLANE LANDIN'!!" The end
How much of Backlash Cop has been played live?
When they played Truck in 2006 they started with Backlash Cop, played White Music with much attention drawn to Jamie on cowbell and something else the identity of which escapes me now.
purely guesswork but i'd be surprised if tracks 6-14 have been played
They did 'Backlash Cop' 'White Music' and 'Les Savy Fav' and possibly another'n from the album that night..
I have a vision
of Andrew wandering onstage during a FWW gig, reciting Us And The Ringside Stars and leaving.
I heard that years ago and only found it was JPL about a year ago!
I still can't mention the Strand Bar without exaggurating the 'r'
FACE ON HIM LIKE A MANGO!
My maths teacher played it for us in class
Good times.
apologies for shaky camera work.

^FYI, this is worth clicking on
it's Andrew from Jetplane Landing covering BRING THE NOISE.
Just given Once Like A Spark a listen for the first time.
This is ace, right up my street!
What next?
Els Quatre Gats!
http://open.spotify.com/album/4GLZbjpfHh8eFYAaZNlpUk
I've never listened to Backlash Cop, but Zero For Conduct is ace too, you'd probably like Atoms Dream In Technicolour and What The Arguement Has Changed best. It's a bit poppier. But yeah, still excellent.
the next logical step is Backlash Cop
a funk/punk concept album about some of the most influential icons of african-american culture and les savy fav

WHAT WE KNOW NOW COULD DOUBLE OUR ART

<33333333
Was listening to Backlash Cop last night for the first time in a while
it really is a fantastic album. One of my favourite bits is the first song, where you here the sirens and other noises, random chatter, the light cymbal crashes...then they begin to tease with that guitar riff that they keep building up = so awesome.
stoked about new songs and possible tour next year.
<3 I genuinly think Backlash Cop is an overlooked classic of the last few years
and really should get mentioned more (at all?)
Think this deserves a bump cos they're meant to be back this year innit.
<3 JPL.
Summerish, according to Cahir
by then it will have been 6 (SIX) years since Backlash Cop! ._.
Been listening to Once Like A Spark a few times in the past week or so. I've always maintained BC was my favourite but I might be changing my mind. Stupid OLAS with its bloody awesome riffs and songs and resonance.
Anyway i pretty much emptied my self-restraint reserves in not shouting down lyrics on the twitter and tagging you and shucks in them
still need to do the whole 'listen to Backlash Cop' thing.
OLAS still slays.
WHERE ARE THE BEAUTIES READING MIND OVER MATTER?
REACTIONARIES
READY INTENSE!
WO-OH
THROW DOWN YOUR POSSESSIONS!
Um, has anyone noticed they've taken all their records off Spotify?
Sadface. Gonna have to rip my CDs tonight.

IT'S SO COOL

IT BREAKS ALL THE RULES!
CLIMBING UP THE FACE OF MILES DAVIS

Jetplane Landing were awesome
plus they feature in Peppa Pig.
I didn't know this.
Excellent fact.
How do they feature in Peppa Pig?
Very puzzled!

awesome!
I've still got my New Standard one from 2003. It's full of little holes and marks that won't shift, but I'm never getting rid of it.
I watched the Smalltown America documentary thing last night
and it made me rip all my JPL CDs so I could listen to them this morning. On the back of Zero For Conduct there's a message from Ferris to me which says "Happy Birthday Niki! 8/10/02" - which signifies the first time I saw them, my 17th birthday. Ferris bought me a pint. My friend took me as a present and afterwards we decided to set up our own Isle of Wight music fanzine / promoter thing called TINY BOMBS (<3)
Anyway, a few months later we got Jetplane to play on the Isle. Unfortunately after we'd agreed the date and venue and stuff, our school organised a trip to Berlin which clashed with the gig, so we couldn't even go and see them, at our OWN gig which WE'D organised. We were really upset. On the day of the gig we wore our "fuck you and your opposite sex" tshirts, and the teachers didn't seem to mind, cos they knew how bummed we were.
When we returned from Berlin, our parents surprised us with a VIDEO: they'd gone to the gig themselves and filmed it all for us. Apparently my mother had got in contact with Ferris and asked if she could come along and film the gig in our absence. Of course they could! I still have that video <333
tl;dr. Jetplane memories <33333
hahaha
i remember Tiny Bombs from the JPL board. who did you run it with???
My friend Vicki.
I remember the JPL board! I met some people off there at the Islington Academy gig I *think*.
I loved our Tiny Bombs days. We interviewed Biffy Clyro before they were ANYONE! Lulz.
I was almost certainly one of them
I still keep in contact with some of them, a whole bunch of them were at Truck last year!
:D
Brilliant.
Pretty sure I met someone off here at a random Jetplane gig in Bournemouth too. I was quite hideously drunk, and I wasn't even eighteen. Great days.
at a show in Cambridge in summer 2004
I was so drunk that when Ferris told me to get on stage and sing i did. there's video of it somewhere.
:D
I look forward to when they tour later this year and the inevitable drunken DiS meat.
oh god I'd repressed this
find the video guntrip!
I watched the STA documentary the other day too
and it really brought back some good memories. I was really lucky and was at their first gig ever. It was a matter of right radio station, right time as three days before the gig, they played The Boy You Love to Hate and mentioned that it was a new band featuring Andrew and Jamie from Cuckoo (who I loved!), so off I went and had a blast. Andrew, the total gentleman that he is also give me a copy of the promo EP which they used to book their tour with and for radio etc. which only 50 or so were pressed up. Of course, typically I lent it to a girl that I went on a date with and then never saw her again. I still have the cover floating around somewhere though.
I noticed the other day that the JPL stuff was removed from Spotify, however I think almost all of their stuff is on the STA Soundcloud page.
Cahir has been tweeting recently
about them working on a new record at the moment. He said that they hope to have it out by the summer.
This is a good thing. Especially if it is followed by a tour. It's been way too long.
The 80's were a void
a f**king wasteland without merit.
So excited about the new album and tour
also this email: Jetplane Landing are wrapping up work on their fourth studio album - one of the band's most adventurous and dynamic outings so far. Song titles include the intriguing: 'Magnetic Sea', 'The Beat Generation Ha!', 'Broken By People' and 'Cortez & Colombus'.
Die-hard JPL fans will be delighted to know that the band are planning their first tour in six years to celebrate the release. We will be issuing lots of JPL goodies this Summer to celebrate.
YES. So much yes.
This isn't....
some weird, belated April Fool's joke is it???? I'd LOVE to hear some new JPL. It's been a long time :)
playing Glasgowbury, their first show in seven (!) years
