Juke/Footwork
This is dance music from Chicargo that originates from house roots over the last 30 years or so... via a sample heavy hip-hop tradition and fuck knows what else, I'm just a dude from Yorkshire after all... This music is raw as hell, massive sub bass, twisted samples chopped and screwed out of proportion and insane drum machinie workouts. Its all pretty fast 160 bpm or so, the juke stuff is more stright up whilethe footwork stuff is that mad shit that makes peoples legs turn to jelly. I guess the nearest relations the UK has met up until now is prob ghetto house or booty bass, but that still doesn't prepare you for the mad drum workouts and raw energy. Dance Mania are kinda proto juke, folowing that thread...
Its hard where to start with this since I only came across it last year sometime and its pretty hard to pin down online, you've gotta be from Chicargo to really pin it down it seems...
DJ Nate cauht my ear with his really serreal drum machine/sample workouts, RP Boo and DJ Elmo did too. They all worked in that space between raw energy, speed and space an energy stuff like dubstep and jungle has been playing with parralel to this for some time so it kinda clicked... But this was really diffrent, it's so RAW.
Headhunter un-earthed it around the same time: http://soundcloud.com/headhunter/headhunter-juke-mix-december-2009 for me with that mix and one before it on some Oz radio show. He played loads of DJ Rashad, DJ Spinn, DJ Clent, god knows what else...
His own productions as Adision Groove took influence from this stuff, Footcrab and Bumb Shit have been anthems in the scene for a while and take the big bass drum workout feel and blend it with dubstep. It kind of kicked off a UK juke/footwork hybrid in the underground bass scene with Night Slugs who have been on it for time too dropping Girl Unit's IRL, which is another insane dance floor drum machine workout. Ramadanman and the Hessle crew have always been on a rhythmic tip but the latest platter by him Work Them has a Juke feel to it too, it comes on Loefah's Swamp 81 label, he's a guy that has been working the space vs time 808/909 thing for ages too so its a good home and cross polination between the UK and US.
But it aint all hybrids that are doing it right now... Planet Mu have finnaly got a Juke/Footwork producer on board to release some music outside of the Chicargo scene mixtape/cdr/youtube thing. You can grab stuff from DJ Rashad, DJ Clint and DJ Spinn on Juno download but others are kind of elusive... So check some links out for some sounds.

P.S. Shut up Jook/You're No Jook
The samples go from the sublime to the rediculess, I mean one min you'll be listening to film soundtrack strings building and building, looping and looping over mad beats, then you'll be listening to Evanescence or some other emo bo-locks before a big pop/r&b/rp sample will drop. But somehow it all works and ballances out the fucked up bass, beats, speed and space. A sample will get chopped up and fucked up out of context and it'll make you smile, it just adds to the energy.
DJ Nate aint even making Juke/Footwork anymore he dropped it to make R&B/Rap, leaving heads like Rashad and Spinn to keep things moving in the Chicargo scene as far as I can tell.
...I dunno its just raw, dark and fun, perfect fucked up club music. Its what I always wanted d'n'b to sound like in my club going lifetime instead of re-bore breaks and bait rinsed out lfo wobble basslines.
One more bump...

^UK Hybrids...
Addison Groove - Footcrab
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWfiog1Ure4
Girl Unit - IRL
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jturruPAcoU
Ramadanman - Work Them
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SDoiEoZsWI
More Addison Groove, Ramadanman, Night Slugs related material fits here too, hell even Clap Trap by Joe on Hessle isn't far off...
I don't think it's the kind of music
for 8am Saturday morning, but what I've heard of this (and that's mostly those UK Hybrids actually, I like. The ridiculous fastness of the beats reminds me of breakcore in a way, people like Drumcorps or Bong-Ra. I used to go mad for that music and Juke, with all its fun, almost joke-like, samples perhaps is a more 21st century form of ultimate beats per minute
Preview of the Dj Nate release
I must confess not sure when I'd get the urge to play a juke full-length but...
http://www.urb.com/2010/06/28/dj-nate-hatas-our-motivation-exclusive-stream/
It's actually a really, really great album
Intense, but a surprisingly easy listen for 25 tracks of juke.
Oh cool.
Well, I'll take your word for it.
I need to get myself a blog or summat so people send me promos...grumble, grumble, grumble :)
Haha
I was surprised to be honest, I've always found regular juke to be maddeningly intense and a little difficult - I think it's probably got something to do with Nate as opposed to anyone else, his music's a lot more soulful than you might expect for something so functional.
i find it unbelieeeeeevably annoying
and i think some producers' reactions to it seem a bit tokenist as well. but oh well, it gave us footcrab so musn't grumble.
WORK THEM WORK WORK THEM WORK THEM WORK THEM WORK THEM WORK THEM WORK THEM
WORK THEM WORK THEM WORK THEM WORK THEM WORK THEM WORK THEM WORK THEM etc. etc.
the drums in that song are actually amazing
and the synth that comes in is absolutely gorgeous, and emerges from nowhere (bit of a ramadanman watermark now, cuz he does the same thing in glut to stunning effect). buuuut i just find how fast it is absolutely exhausting to the point where i just can't be bothered to put up with it any more. AND YEAH JUST STOP SAYING WORK THEM.
also i forgot how absolutely fucking incredible IRL obviously is so maybe if i just let other people listen to juke and make records it'll be fine.
I don't know why but I got bored with IRL pretty quickly really....
I was just listening to Glut/Tempest earlier this evening and it struck how much I've slept on Tempest...not that jukey but such a beautiful track, kinda reminds of Emeralds or OPN or something while being danceable (for some of it)
I've only ever heard Work Them played out later on when I've been pretty pissed and then it's perfect. APart from Level Crossing, might be my track of the year.
My desire to like juke because I tend to like fast, odd intense styles of music kinda outstrips my actual passion for juke which is a bit limited (but then I've never been to a full-on set of it.
I got bored with IRL pretty quickly
The rest of that EP is much better imo.
Work Them yeah is quite slow but really intense, perfect club fodder. But then so is all of Ramadanman's stuff, he's gradually perfecting a quite incredible style of music that's mega percussive but really thoughtful and well composed, and with a real sense of emotion.
Agreed on Level Crossing, along with Work Them and a couple of other bits (Al Tourettes' blinding 'When I Rest I Rust' and Scuba's 'You Got Me' and 'So You Think You're Special') it's up there with my favourite tracks of the year.
I need to get that Al Tourettes actually
Because so much Ramadanman came out round that time, I slept on his Midland collab a little, but I've gone back to it in the last couple of weeks and it's really great, kinda under-rated I guess. I still really love Basic Music Knowledge just for being a bit of a spanner in the works, and loads of the dubs Pinch played on MAH the other night were amazing - real atmospheric, deep stuff.
work them is only 133 bpm its pretty much a house track
it even says so on the record haha. Its not even the 140 dubstep pace let alone the 170 juke pace.
Work Them destroys it in the dance though so addictive.
There was a nice chicargo showcase on Resonance FM last night, you can hear it still... http://www.thewire.co.uk/articles/4649/ Its by Dave Quam one of the guys thats been introducing/educating loads of us heads about it this last year or so I guess...
After seeing it on a dsf thread
I can't help but hear that voice saying 'Bottom' rather than 'Work Them' :(
TUNE though
Ah. I saw that but had completely forgotten about it.
Cheers for reminding me...haha

That grumpy old fella from the guardian talks DJ Nate :')
http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/jul/20/new-band-dj-nate
haha
oh yeah him...
he's the one who likes to refer to every band with a black member as <insert adjective> dubstep. I wouldn't mind if it was ever even close to being accurate...
Planet Mu are really getting things moving now
DJ Nates first 12" is out today and his album/comp not far away.
Then this: http://www.factmag.com/2010/07/29/juke-artists-dj-rashad-and-dj-roc-ready-new-records-for-october/

Is toooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much

Its pretty confusing esspecialy when hung over but it gets under your skin and you get into the groove of it, find some sort of hyped up dreamy headspace in all that chaos, plus who knew you could make Evanescence into a a fucked up dance floor bomb on 'see into my eyes'. Now what the fuck am I going to mix this with? haha
New mini mix from RP Boo aka Arpebu
http://davequam.wordpress.com/2010/08/07/mix-series-vol-7-rp-boo-d-i-sco-v-ery/
Not sure if anyone's noticed but Bleep have a bit loada stuff about footwork going on at the mo...
http://blog.bleep.com/2010/08/12/mike-paradinas-introduces-juke-house/
There's a few more bits - some samplers for a quid, etc etc
Hey, if it means we get more stuff over here soon I can't wait. Nate's album keeps growing on me, and we've got Rashad's coming soon as well...
(Rashad's Drop Juke Out fucks with my head)
(In entirely a good way)
I enjoy how much more danceable his stuff is than Nate, a lot less psychedelic and abstract.
And this is awesome
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_XU6FLJIgk
that vid is madness
this is too
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PHQXYkmKRM
this thread needs more of these haha it captures the vibe better
Loads of Rashad on Juno
bleep and boomkat are getting it in now too, plus mu are onna release a load. DJ Nate is a freak in the scene really, he sounds really mad and lo-fi compared to Rashad and Spinn or Elmo and RP Boo. They can be more stright up and less twisted, well kinda... its all pretty fucked up.
Dj Rashad's Betta My Space
is so mad too, love that one.
I love Nate's stuff
It makes me feel dizzy/hypnotised, pretty bizarre really for a guy who makes stuff and whacks it up on t'internet at uber lo bitrate.
There are definite parallels to be drawn between people like him and the whole lo-fi hypnagogic, James Ferraro/Oneohtrix thing - subverting pop music through samples and a perverse sense of warped nostalgia.
I can see where you're coming from there
They both obviously using some sort of shared technique but for diffrent ends. And I dunno how much can be read into it. Cos that thread can prob be read into all music, people making their own takes on things they know and have heard but it coming out pretty wrong. Its just the way people work I think. There are threads though some sort of sample/hip-hop/breakbeat/creat digging culture but its just filtered diffrently thru either nostalgic hazy glasses or hyperactive dance music and electronic music culture in general. I dunno its all a big mess haha I mean the hynagogic stuff sounds homemade on perpose and the juke stuff is really home made but doesn't sound it half the time cos its soi extream and massive sounding, there are as many diffrences as there are simularites...
Oh definitely, and that's the main problem with that whole 'hypnagogic' thing
But I always think there are striking similarities between the lo-fi culture and the more DIY ends of electronic dance music culture - sampling, mixtapes, an emphasis on 'keeping it real' and staying independent...
It's interesting, there's a lot of talk among the whole lo fi US Ferraro thing at the minute about chopped 'n' screwed stuff, and hip-hop in general being a huge influence, and it's hard not to wonder whether it's at least in part because that's been a huge part of the pop cultural background of our generation when growing up.
yeah hip-hop is a big thing I think
more than people realise it was prob the first genre that took on everything and played with it. So much other stuff since has taken that idea and ran with it. Either really litraly by doing what DJ Screw did and got twated and played stuff at 33 instead of 45 or in a more general fashion by recreating nostalgic visions of things they heard or thought they did in the past. Which is pretty much playing about with a sample all over again.

This sounds awsome too: http://www.planet.mu/discography/ZIQ291 'One Blood' :O !!!
Its not a retrospective I don't think
I mean quite a bit of this stuff has been around for a while I think but it doesnt go back to the roots of it. Bleep have a good thing up about juke: http://bleep.com/index.php?page=dynamic&module=juke_feature Its all built for footworking yeah but you can listen to it as much as any dance music haha DJ Nate's stuff is a bit more out there compared to someone like Rashad or Spinn thoes guys are a little more stright up and easier to get your legs around haha. I like the mad raw almost psychedelic sound of DJ Nate.
Can't stop playing
Footwurk Homicide / My Heart / Give Dat Man Room / Let Da Beat Build / 3 Peat... by DJ Nate. Those last two are Lil Wayne fuck ups if you aint guessed already and they are pretty hectick. Give Dat Man Room and Footwork Homicide are insane hyperactive hip-hop anthems. My Heart is pretty mellow... kinda... footwork mellow... Loved up samples, spooky piano, skippy grooves what more could you want? records a vaugly simular tempo/half tempo? yup.
i'm a massive fan
just got hold of dj roc - crack copane. its a lot darker than the nate album with king of the circle and dj roc symphony being highlights.

I'd drop the back end of that remix
the front is really nice until 1.33 then the vibe is just gone for me at least. I'd have continued on that vibe until the end and lost the gnarly bit. It doesn't add any more energy the breakdown is nice n'all but after that it's well shit... It goes all clunky instead of getting that flowy, drum machine fucked up flow going. Close mind, nice effort.
Thanks
it was our first foray into juke territories, and were trying to make something that's a bit more of a challenging listen than the standard juke style.
At least you half enjoyed it.
feeling the vibe here
needs a boost in mastering or something but it sounds good. Nice flow nice vibe.
ta dude
yeah, i agree - tryna get someone on mastering it.
feedback on my juke/footwork track please!
Hey guys, just trying to spread my music and get feedback on this juke/footwork track. Let me know what you think.

bumping this
because I finally bought Bangs & Works and think it's incredible. Real glimpse into a strange and uncompromising dance subculture. Most of it is, by any objective musical criteria, terrible. But yet I'm finding it brilliant and completely addictive. So, yeah, I'm finally on this one.
thought someone
came here to go on about how great the Machinedrum album is. IT's fucking excellent people, best juke related thing that isnt footcrab.
