mainly because they're shit and pretty much always have been.
the new album is worse than puzzle which is an achievement.
They've always been shit
and yet you've already listened to their new album enough to compare it to their last? Why bother?
I haven't heard the new album yet but I'll be picking it up later this week. Golden Rule is definitely the best song they've released since IL so I'm expecting good things.

but have the boxset waiting for me and fully anticipate I'll enjoy it. probably not as much as the first 3 mind.
I still find it odd that there's been such a degree of bile post infinity land, the change in sound really isn't that drastic. There's just a lot more marketing megabucks behind them.
First impressions -
their weakest album, but still pretty good, which is a measure of how good they once were, and still are. Inevitably the loudest moments are the highlights - That Golden Rule, Cloud Of Stink etc. A minor gripe for me is the shiny production.
Essentially I think they are still the same band, just a lot more produced. The riffs are there, the strings are there, the breakdowns are there. The trouble is, the craziness is all diluted, in comparison to to the first 3 albums, and to an extent the 4th. It's a fantastic introduction to Biffy Clyro, but as an album, that's all it can ever be - an introduction to greater things.

people talk about how they've gone bland or sold out their rough edges for big anthemic choruses but listen back to Blackend Sky, it's full of huge melodies and singalongs.
if anything, the 'weirdness' that people harp on about them losing was more of a phase than the pop stuff. they only really went 'out there' for maybe an album and a half, but they've always written 'pop' stuff.

Some of their best stuff was on Blackened Sky, and that was a relatively melodic, straightforward album. Scary Mary, 57, Justboy etc would all fit on the new album, but I wonder how much of their impact would be affected by the new production values. What makes it stand up against the following two "classic" albums is the power, and the phenomenal rhythm section, the edge of which is now 80% sawn away.
Booooom Blast And Ruin is a prime example. It's the same tempo as The Go-Slow, from Blackened Sky, but it feels empty in comparison. Radio-friendly, sure, but indistinguishable from the Foo Fighters, or even Funeral For A Friend for a few seconds at the beginning. Not that it's "bad", just disappointing, as I find myself dreaming what it would sound like produced differently. Having said that, That Golden Rule is probably powerful enough on it's own to shut me up on that count.
The album is enjoyable taken on it's own, but it's impossible to take it out of the context of their superior back catalogue. It's happened to plenty of bands, such as Muse, and will continue to.
I like the new album
I was more disappointed when Marmaduke Duke went from 'screamy and experimental' to 'lightweight pop shit'. Biffy were always going to go mainstream. OR is far far better than Puzzle, they've grown into that mainstream sound now, plus, there's nothing as god-awful as Folding Stars on there.
as a long time biffy fan
im very happy with this album, enjoying it a lot more than puzzle, golden rule, bubbles and especially cloud of stink, awesome stuff. My only issues is ggggarths production which is just a bit off, everything gets a bit mushy and all the guitars lack treble.
Good on them though, i wish them all the success in the world, too many of my favourite bands from my youth broke up and work in Office Depot now!!!
I don't understand all of the hate being thrown its way
Lets get the hard facts out of the way:
Yes, it is the worst album they've doneYes, the "new direction" is generally less interesting than their old stuff.
However it is far from a terrible album, the first three albums are excellent (among my favourites ever) and being not quite as good as them is not something to be ashamed of.
I don't know if its because of all of the love that so many people gave them, that so many people championed them and now feel somehow betrayed.
I don't agree with this, its great seeing them do so well, and for christs sake, I first saw them in front of about 15 people 8 years ago (indie points please), I'm sure as hell not the same person I was 8 years ago, and expecting them not to change is stupid. And in the grand scheme of things I'd much rather see them fill stadiums than the Kaiser Chiefs. Biffy could easily turn people onto other good music,
Saying that, I am disappointed in the album, but I'll live with it.
It's slowly growing on me...
and i'm seeing them on thursday, so I sort of need to force myself to like it if i'm to like half their set come thurs.

I only know the 2 singles (and obviously the old stuff, apart from 1/3 of Puzzle that I didn't listen to much) and I prefer The Captain to That Golden Rule.
Their setlist is a mix of everything, so we'll be alright. Plus it's always better live, we might like it.
And if we don't, we'll go to the bar or for a tab during the new songs.
