Is it seen as pirating to copy library CD's onto your computer?
After joining the main city library this week I've discovered a treasure trove of CD's there - As most of my music is in digital format I don't care too much about owning the physical copy - I borrowed loads of stuff, Bonde Do Role album, couple of SFA albums I was missing, Yo La Tengo, Michigan by Sufjan Stevens - all for £2.50
Is there anything wrong with that in the minds of record companies? I've never heard it mentioned before.

yes
it's part of the reason why we're not allowed to have new releases when they first come out
i'm with you on this
stoke gets a lot of stick but it's library cd sections are the shit
the other day i got the latest from yeah yeah yeah's and maccabees (previously only listened to on spotify), the beatles live at the bbc, the bonzo dog doh dah band anthology, an ali farka toure compilation and the special 2 disc edition of BTC. touch.
it might just be as bad as downloading but i couldn't give a fuck right now. i properly can't afford to buy albums right now and i don't have spotify at my flat. the library is my only lifeline.
I didn't realise they'd have as many new releases as they do
like I picked up Dark Days/Light Years today for 50p. Kind of seems like an oversight by the labels - can't imagine many people enjoying a CD without popping it onto their mp3 player
it's an interesting offshoot of the downloading argument that i don't feel ever really gets touched on in the endless debates
morally, it must be pretty similar right?
an album i otherwise may have paid probably at least ten spuds for i now only pay 50 pence for...surely affecting the musicians pocket.
so why are downloaders the spawn of satan but library card holders go by unscathed?
how does the library system work? do they effectively just make that one off payment for the album and then loan it out as they please? there must be more to it than that
you'd think the library copies would be
special, copy-protected versions. Like how DVD's are rental versions. Perhaps the percentage of people who use public libraries in this way is so small as to not be worth it? Whatever I'm going back there tomorrow
same
we should probably hush this up now before someone realises and cuts off the gravy train.
I've been thinking of something similar for a while
There are plenty of ways of aquiring music for free, so no money goes to the artist, without touching torrents or p2p. Just plug your i-pod into your friends computer and transfer as many albums as you want. Or borrow their CDs and rip them to your PC.
of course it's illegal
are you simple in the head or something?
to be fair,
i think he was more making a comment on the abstract morality of it, not the technical legality...or that's how i read it
no, but
its like if it was legal to buy a packet of Maltesers, but illegal to eat them all
it's like earlier this decade
when me and my mates would copy CDs for each other. it requires a physical movement + some time to do the pirating, so it's never going to be a massive problem unlike torrent sites where loads and loads of people can get instant access to stuff.
would be funny to see this brought up in a serious debate haha
in the scheme of things I guess its better than downloading
libraries pay the artists like they pay authors so they'd be getting some money (probably like 0.0000006p. dunno if it's per borrow or what though
