Ayler has based his career on an uncompromising approach
good luck
Maybe Witches and Devils?
try listening to Captain Beefheart playing sax for a couple hours
then Ayler will seem more accessible
If you're looking for accessible
Albert Ayler is not what you want. Try Elton John.
While I'd agree to a point with the above.
New Grass and Love Cry are both 'accessible' and quite good and by Albert Ayler.
But to be honest, I'd just give Spirits, Spirits Rejoice, or Spiritual Unity a long, hard shot.
Spiritual Unity
Grin and bear it
At some point it'll all click and you'll realise that Ayler is the greatest music maker of the 20th Century.
Whoa, a thread about Albert Ayler on DiS.
I like.
His late-period albums New Grass and Music is the Healing Force of the Universe are definitely the most accessible but not that great (although nowhere near as bad as free jazz purists would have you believe). TBH if you want that Ayler sound but more accessible you are probably better off investigating Archie Shepp's 60s output.
Get The Live in Greenwich Village double album on Impulse! for the best live recordings of his marching band-influenced stuff - certainly accessible by ecstatic jazz standards. If you like it there's more goodies like that on the Holy Ghost box set. Spiritual Unity is the masterpiece though.
