Dubstep/grime/funky 2009 rundown
Martin Clark aka Blackdown has done his 2009 roundup, a bit early IMO and I don't agree with all of his best ofs, but see for yourselves:

Turin Brakes
It's kind of early
But he'll have most the stuff thats gonna drop by the end of the year anyway, on dubplate and probibly has done for the last 2 years haha... Its a solid run down covering a lot of the good stuff, the funky bit needs more Roska but thats about it. The lists could have been epic this year but thats a nice little snap shot of whats going on and the words are really on point summing up the year well.
...
There's two months left in the year! Although I suppose he has access to almost everything thats scheduled to come out, but still, too early.
My rundow:
Dubstep: Aweful to excellent - the good stuff keeps getting better and the bad keeps getting worse.
Grime: Middling to poor - some real dissapointments from scene stalwarts (Ultrasound, Microphone Champion, Soulfood, new Dot Rotten), alot of filler and a few awesome bits and bobs (next hype, race against time, big h, p money...)
Funky: Good but could do better - steady stream of great releases/nights/radio sets but so far has failed to capture the intitial promise of sirens/gabryelle refix/seasons et cetera
Its the grime producers that have stepped up this year i think
Terror Danjah's stuff still sounds so fresh on the planet mu retrospective. Swindle has a mad melodic musical sound, Silencer has been every where and has a lot of bangers, Dot Rotten dropped 50 free instrumentals out of nowhere with lots of good uns, Maniac was on point then went to prision, Nocturnal smashed it. Logan Sama started releasing grime instrumental 12"s from Wiley, Maniac and J Sweet so far...
I really like Ultrasound its got some killer tracks on it, his Gutter Music Vocal for Starkey is something else too it always goes off in the dance. I was disapointed with Soulfood Vol.4 unfortunatly but he's got Monkey Features Vol.1 on the way soon I think and he's seemed in form on radio and free styles rescently. I need that new Dot Rotten CD but I'm hearing mixed reviews unfortunatly, he's got another coming at the end of the month though so who knows... RAT was pretty soild some brilliant stuff on it but also some shite, I'm not feeling Big H he's good value entertainment in interviews and some of his lyrics but the music isn't to hot... I need that P Money CD too 1UP and Fruit & Veg are killer tracks.
I'm not very clued up on Grime.
I've bought a couple of instramentals, but as hardly anything is released on vinyl I tend to forget about it. I like it in small doses, but I get vexed enough with the world as it is without listening to loads of angry music!
I didn't realise J Sweet had released on Earth616. I need to get that, I know him from Mixing Records in Croydon - he's a really nice guy, totally unassuming and modest.
...
Logan Sama's label its quality so far 3 taster 12"s on white labels, they might be hard to grab now though... But Wiley, Maniac and J Sweet's 12"s are all out on diffrent coloured viynal. I think more are to come from DVA, Skreamz, DOK, etc... at some point.
Grime producer's CD's have been solid this year Terror Danjah's esspecialy, there is talk of Planet Mu trying to get Wiley on board for a retrospective instrumental cd too that would be awsome.
I've got the Wiley one on Earth616
gonna hunt the others down now;) I cant really be bothered buying cd's though, I might download some grime podcasts from the rinse site.
I'd rather have grime 12"s too
its not happening though CD's are even few and far between but I'm just thankful I have a few and that one day I'll get some CDJs haha
this will give you a good idea about what producers are up too...

I just wish the Funky producers would get their fingers out
It's been a dissappointing year really for Funky after the way last year was. Still I suppose its better for things to develop gradually rather than blow up big and be over in five minutes.
totaly agree
its been so slow for releases and even when they are released its been old stuff a lot of the time apart from the dubstep guys who have been a little more forthcoming. like Blunted Robots, a few Kode9 bits, some Pearson Sound stuff, Bubblez and Brackles, Shortstuff who almost fit in there at times. We need more new Lil Silva, Ill Blue, Apple, D Malice, DVA, Roska has been one of the only ones doing semi regular releases of fresh stuff...
Agreed - Roska's been killing it this year but that's been about it
There's enough fresh dubs from people but very little that's actually seen release in the last six months or so. Would love to see some more Lil Silva released soon.
A general overview of the year as far as I see it
As far as dubstep's concerned, the amount of amazing stuff that's come out over the last year has made it easier to ignore the mountains of shite.
What I've found most interesting is that the whole, massively discussed 'Bristol-Berlin axis' of dubstep X techno has more or less dissipated. The majority of the producers who were originally described as incorporating techno elements into dubstep and vice versa have been swallowed up into this whole mire of 'what u call it' future-garage/post-dubstep malarkey. Martyn, Scuba, 2562, and even Pinch seem to have been looking further towards more open, fast paced rhythms lately that have more in common with the Hessle Audio or Blunted Robots lot.
No one's really mentioned Apple Pips either though, which is a shame as it's been a solid year for that label as well - every release has been a stone cold killer (Ramadanman, Brackles, Ramadanman & Appleblim, Al Tourettes & Instra:mental).
As far as I'm concerned the very best things that have come out this year have been Shackleton's 'Three EPs' (itself pretty far from dubstep as an idea these days) and Untold's 'Gonna Work Out Fine' EP. Late bloomers but utterly brilliant.
Apple Pips
is an interesting one they are doing something really diffrent even if its in the techno/dubstep vain they really have a sound of their own. I've loved all of them so far I can't stop playing Justify, its grown on me a lot that one. I wonder if they'll do a compilation after number ten like with Skull Disco.
his blog is 5 years old now too
http://blackdownsoundboy.blogspot.com/2009/11/happy-birthday-i-am-5.html
he celibrated with a old pre-dubstep mix from Hatcha its pure FIRE!
he's done so many quality interviews: Skream, Burial, Burial again in depth, Shackleton, Trim, Skepta, Grievous Angel, Appleblim, Spyro, Mala n Loefah, Loefah, Loefah and Kryptic Minds, Silkie, Newham Generals, DVA, Dot Rotten, Marcus NASTY and Zomby's parrot.
