music story of the year? patrick cowley & jorge socarras- catholic
great album cover. the tapes were recently found in someones basement and it's got a release. the wire has given good coverage and andrew weatherall span something ace off it which reminded me. generous helpings on myspace...

that bbc 6 mix show is well worth a listen too, can't get enough of darkstar aidy's girl and the jon spencer tune he plays is wicked.

Yeah, fuck you, Jackson!
haha,
that was a sleb story, not music.
This is bloody wicked!
I'm praying for a vinyl release of the album as the 12" only had 2 original tracks on,though it did have a Morgan Geist remix on.
I seriously need to check out some more Patrick Cowley productions now if this is anything to go by:)
nice one,
did you catch metro area at big chill? really good, prefered them to lindstrom after.
check out patrick cowley's 'sea hunt', is absolutely incredible. on you tube and his myspace.
aids really destroyed those '80's dudes- cowley, arthur russell, walter gibbons. kevorkian and nicky siano about the only ones left now.
No I've never seen Metro Area unfortunately,
but I love their stuff and I think it's a shame that no one has mentioned them in any of the 'Best Of The Decade' things. I think they were one of the main caralysts for the Italo Disco revival thats been going on in recent years - have you heard the Unclassics comp they released? It has Gaz Nevada - Special Agent Man http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPudv5Yq68g&feature=PlayList&p=B2DE3470DAE8DDC1&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=75 and loads of other Italo gems.
Sea Hunt is wicked, I think I prefer Cowley to Giorgio Moroder now.
I love that late eighties/early eighties New York scene, don't know how I've missed out on Cowley! Hate to tell you though Walter Gibbons died of Aids in 1994. I sometimes wish I'd been born a few years earlier - I have some older friends who were lucky enough to see Larry Levan DJ in 1992 when DJ Harvey bought him over to the UK shortly before he also died of Aids. I was old enough to have gone, but unfortunately was probably e'd off my head at some sweaty hardcore rave...
I got it yesterday
Man I didn't realise it was quite so leftfield! Some awesome tracks on there, I particularly like track 8, Room: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYdt7s2u2EE
I also got a repress of Sexual Harrassment's I Need A Freak album. It's a must have for these two tacks alone:
I Need A Freak http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eL5ymYY_tE8&feature=PlayList&p=C8EE5A90283E3028&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=85

Awesome leftfield disco! I heard Weatherall play I Need A Freak last time I saw him, but original copies go for big bucks so this was a godsend. Loads of wicked music around at the minute:)
not heard unclassics.
have you been on the beats in space website? it's amazing, click on the playlists section. shitloads of free streamable/ downloadable mixes from geist, jesrani, weathrall, mike simonetti, james murphy etc.
i prefer cowley to moroder too, much more modern. 6 mix was great this week too with derrick may. he played a cowley track as well and said something like what him and juan atkins were doing was copying cowley.
room is really good, more downbeat than i'd expect from cowley.
early '80's stuff is really cool, in art too, keith haring also died of aids. arthur russell died in the '90's as well, but what i meant was people who's main work was in the '80's.
interesting review in the wire this month of some disco album's where they argue arthur russell is the only disco figure to get massive acceptance because he was a classically trained auteur, but disco is still frowned upon.
have you heard the black science orchestra album walter's room inspired by gibbons? is really good, glad i've got a copy, 'cause think it's quite hard to get now.
larry levan designed ministry of sound's soundsystem apparently, don't know if it's the same type of setup they use now, but well after going there one day.
Yeah I really like Beats In Space,
haven't been there for a while, will have a look in a bit. I missed the Derrick May show, he was on there a few weeks back and did a really nice mix - first half was music that inspired him and the second half was what he plays now I think.
Was the Belgian track he played this?

Never heard Walter's Room, but I may have to buy it as it's surprisingly cheap on Discogs. Ashley Beadle is a legend, this is my favourite track of his:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5vsHHrgniI
I knew The Ministry was inspired by the Paradise Garage, I didn't realise Larry designed the soundsystem. Haven't been there for at least ten years, I wouldn't mind a trip up there soon. The Derrick May 7 hr set the other week must've been amazing.
The cd is only £8 at Chemical Records:

Just found out there were two 12" which came out recently as well:
http://www.wordandsound.de/article/60835
http://www.wordandsound.de/article/61720
I think I might buy them direct from the Word & Sound site cos nobody in the UK seems to have them.
may seems to have a sort of residency at 6music then,
well done the bbc.
had another listen and i got muddled up before, it was a recent tune that was playing, so techno is still from detroit. the belgian one was liaisons dangereuses- peut etre. very good, funky proto-house.
did you hear the ashley beedle and horace andy album from this year? disappointed the inspiration information series hasn't had more coverage. mulatu and the heliocentrics are great together and the tony allen/ jimi tenor tune i heard is incredible.
think i went to fabric when that derrick may night was on- moritz von oswald trio, juan atkins and octave one, was wicked.
that's a good price for cowley/ socarras.
A Derrick May residency!
I'm gonna have to start tuning in for this.
Peut Etre is wicked, first I've heard of Liasons Dangereuses but it seems they were an influential New Wave band in the early Eighties, I would like to get this album - theres a still shrinkwrapped cd going for 12 euros but the vinyl is a bit pricey:

Liaisons Dangereuses - Peut Etre

I will have to check the Ashley Beedle/Horace Andy album, cheers for the tip off.
Man I bet the Derrick May night was wicked, amazing line up.
picked up the allen/ tenor album,
his drumming is better than ever, what an inspiration. the album is more vocal than i expected.
apparently kid creole and hercules and love affair are up next. might be interesting.
just got the ze compilation. the levan mix of creole is very good, quite intense, but light at the same time.
