Dizzee Rascal's new album is a colossal, steaming turd.
All he talks about now is shagging girls (yawn) and money (double yawn). How can someone who once wrote something so perceptive, witty and focused release such inane drivel?!
The entire album is complete bollocks, bar 'Money Money', which has an adequate backing track, but loses points for a) recycling lyrics from 'Bubbles', and b) being lyrically vapid.
Worst album i've heard all year by a long shot.

Dizzee Rascal
powr powr powr powr powr powr powr BONKERS
soooooooooooooooo baaaaaaaaaaaaaad
its brilliant
to quote dbag That track is pretty flawless as a crowd pleasing pop choon
'that track' makes everyone bop their head up and down
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmoy1uVNXeE
Dance Wiv Me is class
* painful
don't like pop music huh?
your loss
"bla bla, let's get a hotel room, bla bla, sex sex, clubs, girls, dancing"
+ Calvin Harris lame-o rap does not good pop music make.
don't like sex huh?
your loss
i reckon you don't know what makes good pop music makes. That track is pretty flawless as a crowd pleasing pop choon
calvin harris doesn't rap in it does he?
...
Yeah, good single.
I was thinking of holiday
dance wiv me is terrible, holiday is good
Calvin Harris doesn't rap in it.
Considering Maths + English was musically one of the biggest letdowns I've ever had
I literally hope I never hear this record.
Multiply its awfulness tenfold.
Maths + English was great.
he's been on a steady decline.
Boy In Da Corner was a very solid album and since then it's as if he's being trying to get away from the sound that made him such a captivating artist to begin with. It's pretty obvious that he's happy now to make an all-out pop album, but it's not for me. I would wager that a large chunk of his post 'Dance Wiv Me' fans would possibly turn their noses up at the sounds on Boy In Da Corner. Horses for courses though I suppose.
See also: Biffy Clyro.
off topic but
cannot agree more about Biffy.
You seem to be way, way too concerned with the subjects of rap lyrics.
You should be more concerned with the way these subjects delivered, whether it's with great metaphors and rhymes, such as a Weezy or Bun B or Ghostface Killah, who admittedly reference sex, clubs and women in their lyrics, or with sniveling delivery, a total lack of memorable lines, weak flow and preachy demeanor such Immortal Technique and his ilk who address high minded lyrical themes in the most fucking boring manner possible. It doesn't matter what he's saying, it's how he's saying it.
^^^ WRONG WRONG WRONG ^^^
Instead of just saying "WRONG WRONG WRONG" which means absolutely nothing
why don't you tell me what you know about it? Or maybe refute some of my points? Would that be too much work for you?
ok.
I just completely disagree that it doesn't matter what's he's saying. Yes it's important how he says it. Very important. But to me what he's actually rapping about DOES matter.
well
I Luv U is pretty much one of the defining tracks of the decade and that is about, well, shagging girls. Multiple girls. Cheating on girls. Getting blowjobs off girls. Being promiscuous with a number of laydeez. The difference is that it has incredible production, broke in Grime to the world and harnessed a killer flow. i think it is, ultimately, the way he tells them.
i do agree that he's gone downhill though. To think the guy who wrote Stop Dat now creates dog eggs like Dirtee Cash is pretty sad.
I pretty much agree with this,
actually 100% agree. But I can get down on some insane lyrical buffoonery, regardless of how boring the voice is, if the backing track is sufficient enough.
But yah, style over substance in rap is always preferred. Its when the two mix that you really get something special.
so it doesn't matter...
....what people like Nas rap about?
this album as is good, cos it's all about the music?
Not really sure what you just said there.
Nas is great, some of the time, Illmatic...classic, and why? Because he dropped unrivaled lyrical bombs over some of the best New York boom-bap beats to grace rap music. Perfect example of style and substance coming together.
Not it all.
This album may very well suck, I haven't heard it. But what makes or breaks a rapper is not the subject of his lyrics but the mechanics of his language, the rhythm and cadence of his delivery, the quality of his allusions and allegories, having a distinctive voice and being able to construct memorable lines, these things are what make or break a rapper. It's admirable for a rapper to cover more sophisticated subject matter, but it's far from priority number one when it comes to rap. Re: I'd rather listen to a great club track from UGK then a sniveling preachy whinefest from Immortal Technique, Atmosphere, et.al.
*at.
I've been having typing accuracy problems lately.
yes to that man
yeah i agree ...
...with all of that, and to be honest i love a good rubbish lyric, i had a good jump around to NWA today, but even they had some valid and important points to make in the odd song....but it never got in the way of the tune, it added to it even...
so yeah, i agree with you (it's funny i haven't heard this album either) but i do think it's better when the rapper has all the above qualities you mentioned and goes about in a clever, witty and insight way lyrically - then you get something really special like Public Enemy...
...and i reckon Dizziee's a smart guy, with some good insight - pity he just sings about the usual stuff....kinda like the cliche promos that are being made for the album too - party in ibiza dance promo anyone? mind you having said that the bonkers promo was fun...
it'll be interesting if this release stands the test of time - good pop does....i think some of it will, regardless if i like it...(odd that...)
i have it from a good source all he's interested in doing at the moment is huge anthems for the masses, so more to come in the future i guess...
Insert "are" between "subjects" and "delivered" and "as" between "such" and Immortal.
I honestly don't know how I missed those. Damn.
Dizzee rascal's one of the few people
to go from being unlistenably shit to being FUCKIN ACE.
Holiday - 9/10
I absolutely despise Dance Wiv Me but Holiday is well good
surely the fact that it's Dizzy fucking Rarseclart should have put you off?
Talentless fuck, albeit quite funny on Newsnight.
.
haha what the blaze are you talking about
Hmm
His freestyle on american radio a few years back with the (i think) Grit Boyz or something was one of the funniest and most embarrassing things i've ever heard (for the americans)
Not that bothered by this album though. It's like he's trying to be Basement Jaxx now.
nah he was good with basement jaxx
this is just pap.
I've not heard any good freestyles from Dizzee in ages he seems to have got lazy lyricaly rescently, his flow is still good but hes not saying much its a shame. This was the last time I saw him on form I think...

If you think Boy in da Corner was shit
you're an idiot.
If you think he's really shit now, you're an idiot. You don't have to like it (and like permafrost said, it's not really for me his new album) but to call it a steaming turd is overdoing it somewhat.
please guide me to where i said Boy in da Corner was shit.
I think it's one of the best albums i own.
It was a comment on people like wrightylew who say it's shit
I didn't refer to you
Culturally perceptive still, non?
With a Pina Colada or whatever you'd rather
White wine, that's fine, just give me a lager
not heard this album
but that's one damn fine couplet.
yeah its probibly shite
I dont think I can bring myself to listen to it and I really like BiDC and Showtime, Maths & English was half solid as hell as well. But I can't listen to a whole album of this pop leaning even if I do enjoy a bit of Bonkers and your right that Dirty Money? is it that... track he played at glasto was like a daytime radio Pussy'ol and pretty cool but nahhh I'm not feeling anything else.
I'd be even more fucked off if he wasn;t still suporting the underground roots though, at least he's bigging up Newham Generals who suported him when he was a young'un on pirate radio. A week heardly goes by when I dont see one of the gens do a random vid of freestyle with lots of backing from Dirrty Stank Dizzies label. Not to mention releasing their album.
what the hell did you expect? how long do you think he can mine that same crap?
Its just hip house . . .
. . . and that was never that good. http://www.whatisthegrain.com/record-review/is-dizzee-rascals-tongue-n-cheek-the-second-coming-of-hip-house/
I suspect it's not great after album number 3
Though I like the singles. However, note the title:
'TONGUE 'N' CHEEK'
Isn't he recording this album as a bit of a laugh, like? Not actually pimping out girls from his estate to the local South East Side clan?
it really gets my goat
when internet critics call musicians/artists 'talentless fucks'
the fact remains he has his own record label, released four albums and won the mercury prize at an age when you were no doubt furiously masturbating to your mums bravissimo catalogues.
you may not like what he does, but to call him talentless is misguided
again: when did i say he was completely talentless?!
I referred to the debut as "perceptive, witty and focused".
i was referring
to kissingkansas' comments, apologies for poor use of the reply function
Dance Wiv Me, Bonkers, Holiday
amazing
agree 100%
his first album is shit too, apart from I luv U.
don't care how many hipsters tell me its "genius".
I never want to hear this
maybe I'm putting too much trust in your taste and should probably just make my own mind up, oh well.
Boy In Da Corner was all kinds of ace, he seems to have been on the steady decline ever since.
Words can't describe how much this album disappointed me
As each of his singles was released, I became less and less enthusiastic about its release.
why would anyone even take english hip hop seriously in the first place?
as if it could actually be anything other than colossal, steaming turd.
We really need a '^ Not This' button
for posts like this
I'm sorry, I just hear "THIS IS SO LAME THIS IS SO LAME THIS IS SO LAME"
every time a British MC opens his mouth. I'm sure there's great British hip hop producers out there but there should be laws prohibiting the donation of their beats to rappers of British origin IMO. The accent..the fucking.....everything.
oh man
purists are gonna go bare skatty when they see you describing grime as hip hop.
I bet you'd find some stuff you liked if you dug deeper
grime is where its at with UK stuff really the hip-hop hasn't really been cutting it.
I guess a lot of people have grown up with american stuff so cant see past it.
honestly don't think I'll ever see past it jimi
I just can't get over the fact that these rappers have grown up with british culture, which is inherantly lame and are then vocalising the lameness in really horrible english accents. I'm sure there's some with good skills and everything, I'll just never hear it for the above. Was listening to some Giggs earlier actually to see what the fuss was...really didn't like it.
Giggs is an aquired taste
his flow is well sluggish, plus that road rap thing and a hell of a lot of UK rappers just try and do bait US immertations. I think our guys work better on the raw hype stuff that grime provides... My fave UK MC's are Trim, Wiley, D Double E, Footsie, Durrty Goodz, Dot Rotten, Tempa T, Riko, Dizzee Rascal even though he's fallen off rescently.
this might do it for ya http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZ6G7qwjom4 its just a hyped up party track just about energy and violance haha
Wiley Freestyle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKzc385G5wU
this is damn good
didnt really like it jimi, soz
no doubt there's skill in wiley though
fact gave away one of dizzee's finer moments today
Roll Deep - Eskimo Vocal
http://www.factmagazine.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3826&Itemid=99
classic grime, one of Wiley's best beats ridden by Wiley, Dizzee, Flowdan etc...
and why can't Tinchy do this again?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGKJc7nvPJE
I got that comp of classic Roll Deep
sooo good
ace
I'm going to grab it soon I think, I could really do with alot of that stuff. I'm playing catch up with grime really the old stuff anyway.
I DLed this rescently...
Roll Deep - Creeper Vol.1
http://www.grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/Creeper_Volume_1
Roll Deep - Creeper Vol.2
http://www.grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/Creeper_Volume_2
so good... they were scrapped but released as a free DL by tip top grime DJ Logan Sama. Loads of freestyles and classic eski beat wiley productions.
i think Wiley > Dizzee
yeah
Wiley is the godfarther of it all and has loads of better music too as a producer and MC its just scatered about instead of Dizzee's one amazing album. Its a pitty they have all jumped on pop/electro now though they just don't cut it. They were loads better at doing their own thing and Dizzee even showed they could be succesful at doing grime but hardly anyone has even bothered trying it since.
hmm
dunno. i think Wiley has achieved it pretty well. He even did well making something with Mark Ronson, that takes talent.
its just there are millions of wiley mixtapes and quite a few albums and a lot of them are hit and miss but the highs are really good, not that I've heard them all like.
Wiley hated that album with Mark Ronson on it he went on a rant saying he'd do unkind things to anyone who bought it or something hahah
I can't find the quote at the moment it was pretty funny and all in capitals, but searching for stuff with Wiley in the name on grimeforum is a mission as every other thread mentions him...
Wiley has been signed again
he's now been on most if not all the majour labels apparently...
Pay As You Go (Sony)
Roll Deep (Relentless/EMI)
Solo (Asylum/Warner)
now Island/Universal
