Krautrock
So I spent a good part of my sunday morning exploring Krautrock I don't know (anything except Can and some Neu!) as aided by Julian Cope's Krautrocksampler list...
Amon Duul II- Yeti has blown my mind and some Tangerine Dream seemed pretty amazing. So what would others here recommend?

Will be taking care of this at some point. Cheers.
Phaedra - Tangerine Dream
isn't mentioned on that list, nor are Rubycon or Stratosfear, but they are all well worth checking out. Tangerine Dream were fantastic.
There's a great bootleg of an early Kraftwerk radio session when Michael Rother was in the band and they were much more motorik rock than electro pop here: http://duesseldorfhbf.blogspot.com/2007/07/kraftwerk-1971-live-at-radio-bremen.html but if you haven't already heard them Autobahn and Trans Europe Express are pretty essential.
Hapsash & The Coloured Coat
the self titled album. Its pretty mad. Was mentioned in the Julian Cope book at some point as a big influence on the early Krautrock sound. Its on Spotify too.
Faust! Faust! Faust!
Are a lot better than 'krautrock' or whatever, and all their album are greeat. Get the double thing of the first two albums, Faust IV and The Faust Tapes.
Overrated.
They're really not that good.
i must confess since august
i've got into more Cluster, Ash Ra Tempel, solo Michel Rother and Harmonia.
but much though i love some of the others, Faust really are great.
And what other krautrock band can continue being great and interesting up to 2009, without any nostaglic backwardness.
Try Riton's krautrock mix
It's really rather good.
http://moveyourfeettothebeat.blogspot.com/2008/07/eine-kleine-nacht-musik-riton-mixtape.html
that's a really good mix though.
and I can see why people see Faust as too self-conscious or ironic.
I suppose ironically, contra Mr. Cope, these days bands like Ash Ra Tempel and Amon Duul are a lot more 'mythical' than the quite functional experimentalists, Faust; who many people might with Tony Conrad, or at Atp.

From some genius individual who realises we can't all read German or afford to pay £100 for an out of print book. Wonderful. If it's ever repressed I'll be buying a copy for sure though.
Bought Popol Vuh - Lietze Tage~Lietzte Nachte yesterday
Amazing stuff. I don't understand why this band hasn't received more acclaim. I showed the record to some guys in their fifties who were well into Hawkwind, Tangerine Dream etc in the Seventies and they'd never heard of them.
My next Krautrock purchases are gonna be Cluster - Sowiesoso and Can - Future Days. I still need to watch that BBC4 documentary on iplayer.
The Popol Vuh stuff I've got
is very very good indeed
^
It's just a shame that their stuff is so hard to find.
just bought a copy of krautrocksampler, been after it for a while
and was prompted to finally purchase after reading julian cope interview in Wire this month, he said it will never be reprinted and is getting harder and harder to find.
Nice,
I think I might try to track down a copy as well. If you haven't read it I highly recommend his autobiography Head On.
yeah, think its my favourite rock bio, crazy acid induced times aplenty..
lol
it is pretty wild!
How much did your copy of Krautrocksampler set you back?
It's a pricey book what with it being out of print for so long.
14 quid.
Wow
nice one!
BBC4
have just did a documentary about Krautrock. It's on iPlayer! And is very good too
If you liked Amon Duul, then try Ash Ra Tempel
Similar heavy-psych vibes going on. Grails sound a lot like Amon Duul as well, for something more modern.
Harmonia's Live 1974 is nigh on untouchable as well. And Neu! '75
I really need to investigate the genre more - I really love everything I hear. Next stop for me is some Can.
The Krautrock documentary has gone from iPlayer :(
Anybody know where else i could find it?
It's on Youtube
Heres Pt 1:

yeah I have it saved in my sky+

Thats a bit harsh isn't it?
I don't understand why anyone would pay for sky either, but each to their own and that.
erm.
i don't think he was handing out invites for people to come 'round to his front room to come watch it. although i may be mistaken? huh? cup of tea?
i have it on sky + too. but no point saying that - cause it doesn't help other people to see it.....
hence.

Also a good article in the Wire
on Kosmische bands a couple of months ago. Opened my eyes to another batch of far out German 70s music.
Cheers for reminding me:)
I still haven't got around to reading that, it looked like a really well researched article.
The bloke from Emeralds did a little guide too

As I always say when people ask about Krautrock
get some Agitation Free - their first albums Malesch and 2nd are fantastic.
Nice one
I've never heard of them, but going by their write up on discogs they sound very interesting indeed.
Have a listen here:

Cheers,
they sound good, though maybe a little rifftastic for my tastes. I suppose I lean towards the more electronic side of Krautrock.
cluster-
zuckerzeit and sowiesoso
la dusseldorf
the self titled album is a work of pure joy imo
Conrad Schnitzler
that is all...
