Is the UK too soft & Indie? Time for Heavy Brits?.........Uh, sshyah.
Pssst, hello England, metal is cool now. Metal is not just for brain dead laboratory apes and nose picking, ass scratching inbreeders anymore. Can I get an amen?
In a nation where the per capita band inception rate must be running close to 50%; you'd think that more young musicians would think or feel like letting their balls swing a little. And ladies, err, I mean "birds"... if the guys are unwilling to do it, I'd say go for it cause we needs more females in Metallumzia too.
another hint: you don't have to be beardy to be metal or heavy or ridiculously rocking so if you are worried about the aesthetics- don't.

Gallows have just signed a £1 million recording contract
keeping the spirit of punk alive
etcetera
check out
Chickenhawk & The Mirimar Disaster.
My two favourite UK metal bands.
I thoroughly endorse this post
Metal is doing alright though
Basick records in particular have been signing loads of acts this year, and although they're technically more hardcore orientated 30 days of night are doing pretty good too.
AMEN BROTHA!
Preach the truth!
I still don't see why everyone is so down on heavy music
I'm sure thats why the biggest percentage of folk pick up a guitar in the first place. To let , as Cronin says, their balls swing.
Which of these is more likely in secondary school
"Want to start a band and sound like Metallica?"
"What to start a band and sound like The Kooks?"
Chist it was bloody invented in this country, we need to do more.
Too True.
It's high time for you Brits to show us new jack Americans some metal!
B
I'm being serious, have several friends who work in music colleges around the country and depressingly Kooks-lite is how they want to be.
BITCHES
http://www.myspace.com/peaceandbitches
UK music is weak as piss
indeed
Don't really have any other places to compare the UK to
so I wouldn't really know, are you Americans a lot more metal over then Cronin? I would've guessed this but thought I might have come to this conclusion due to inaccuate stereotyping.
ignore "over"
listen to this band
http://myspace.com/lavotchkin
then this one
http://www.myspace.com/mcvln
haha soapy those are awesome bands
i like Machiavellian more- they sound like Immortal and I like the name. I am finally getting into some hardcore, hardcore punk now (scratching the surface really) with a few cds from Overmars, Genghis Tron and Circle Takes The Square- it's cool music.
Yeah, I know there's probably tons of Heavy English Music out there- I am just trying to find out what it is.
Simon Lavotchkin is my neighbour
I'm guessing he didn't make the noise complaint about recording guitars in our living room! I should really go see them live, think they've just got their album back from mastering..
you should check these guys out
http://www.myspace.com/landbong (turn it up)
I saw them support Boris and they made them sound like a kids cover band with practice amps or something. Very heavy indeed!
Holy Shit!
That's what I'm talkin' about! And you don't see many better names than that...
part chimp are rather loud
and rather fucking
the best live band in the country.
nah
metal has never been cool, it never will be... that's kinda the point

Throats, so much.
I'll try and check these out tonight or soon
been working pretty much 24-7 and the DiS time I have had has mostly failed cause the site is always, being updated, down for repairs or completely non-existent.
throats of gold and deslavoland look good
watch the videos on desalvo's page
thems wrong uns
thanks cod- great bands
I'm getting excited now
No metal is ever good
I'm sure you're an expert.
"Nothing good is ever metal"?
there's been some good music that were metal- I'm pretty sure.
prove it
be serious
haha, I was being a facetious bastard too wasn't I?
: )
I sometimes feel like this
quite a lot.
But there are quite a lot of good ones around right now, and we've just put 4 of our favourite heavy new UK bands on a split 7" out next month : Le Swing, Easy Hips, Dreamboats, and run, WALK! Honourable mentions to Manuscripts and Betty Pariso too, who are also releasing a split.

Throats are still the best evahhhh though
http://www.myspace.com/throatsofgold
In conclusion: there are some good heavy UK bands around right now.
Thanks for these. See I knew there was some of this going on!!!
Easy Hips are cool, Le Swing looked awesome but their myspace was devoid of music, runWALK! was great, Throats Of Gold are awesome and I am going to order "New Roars On The Block" and review it.
I didn't have time to check out the others yet but I WILL
I love that this is happening in the UK, seems proper- I feel much better now
We need a Wee bit of Heavy Scottish music and some Darlin' Irish Sludge now.
Thanks holyellen!
Scottish contingent
http://www.myspace.com/takeaworm
Take A Worm For A Walk Week. Glasgow-based spazzy, grindcore-y nonsense, which until recently involved spandex wetsuit uniforms. Mentallists.
Take A Worm For A Walk are the new Minutemen!!!
I love them.
How is playing music like this humanly possible?
thanks!
Take A Worm are awesome.
Their cover of 'Whip It' is particularly great.
DOWN I GO
www.myspace.com/downigo
this reminded me to check them out
the few tracks I heard sounded good.
Heard them mentioned loads here
they seem to fit into the "hardcore" genre. I like their matching stripy cotton briefs and the whole "Tyrant" motif.
: )
the mass grave wallpaper really adds to their myspace
not to mention
rolo tomassi, hardly pains of being pure at heart are they?
I like the pictures I've seen of RT
I was listening to "throats" or Throats Of Gold on their myspace and saw pictures and read mentions of Rollo Tomassi, I'll check them out.
'sjust Throats, no Of Gold... bloody ace though eh? you can get both splits for like a tenner on the holy roar site
White Boys For Gay Jesus aren't called RapeJazz either though i dunno which is better.
Ha, I saw White Boys For Gay Jesus were "friends" on Down I Go's myspace
thanks. I got confused in the articles I read- "Throats", alright. I'm going to go the the Holy Roar site tonight after work.
We're more than friends...
...we've exchanged fluids from every orifice.
Oh and
www.myspace.com/lonewolvesuk
www.myspace.com/frostypunk
http://www.myspace.com/tortugakings
well besides Kong and Chickenhawk
there's Humanfly, Take a Worm For a Walk Week, Blacklisters, Manatees, Monster Killed By Lazer, The Freezing Fog, Year of The Man to name a few
I love Kong
and I'm listening to Take a Worm For a Walk Week (who are taking up where Minutemen left off), my god I can't fathom how music like this is played.
I'll check out these others too- The Freezing Fog sounds like I'll like them for sure.
: )
another couple
in the slightly more traditionally heavy vein:
The Plight get described as Thin Lizzy meets Black Flag all the damn time, kind of twin guitar-led hardcore.
http://www.myspace.com/shortsharpshockuk
SSS are old school crossover thrash, fast as fuck and loads of fun.
these bands are representative of olde skule english metal
The Plight takes riffs from the bands you mentioned; they even totally nicked one from Led Zeppelin in "Pull The Trigger". I think Ali's voice has about ten seconds to live.
SSS
ShortSharpShock
I love how they've added an "S" to "SS". Again, old school- I love it.
good stuff- they're doing the union jack proud.
yep The Plight are filthy bags of greatness
SSS are awesome
some of them are in The Bendal Interlude and there's another band from that group of peeps that i cant remember the name of but are just as good. well maybe not as good but yknow good still.
i'm gonna throw in
http://www.myspace.com/letourenemiesbeware & http://www.myspace.com/hotbone
seeing as we've gone from metal to just kinda heavy stuff
I always seem to be lagging behind when it comes to heavy music
and don't have the same depth of knowledge as a lot of the people in this thread, but if Twin Zero aren't the UK's finest heavy band of recent years I'll eat my hat.
It saddens me that they seem to be inactive nowadays.
...
The ending to Monolith is one the heaviest, strongest album endings I own. But yeah, where did they go?
Wikipedia say they're still active (2003-present"
"2003-present"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vc5CINX60zk
Yeah, I definitely like them. They just put an album out a few years ago (2006), they are probably set to drop another one any second now.
how about Anathema? Anyone like that English prog band that put out some great albums in the late nineties and early noughties? Whatever happened to them I wonder?
Anathema are playing Bloodstock this coming weekend.
yaaaaay!
I love them. good, I hope they've got something in the pipeline.
I think england has a big metal scene but its old skool metal bands
however theres hope for harder rock coming through with bands like pulled apart by horses.
did i read any of this thread
did i hell
they just seem to have stopped without having the decency to officially split up
and it's impossible to find any news on them since The Tomb to Every Hope came out.
they evidently don't play the internet is all
some bands do that
they probably just go about their business completely oblivious to the usual stuff that bands feel compelled to pay attention to.
Until just recently, sunn O))) hadn't logged onto their myspace four almost four years; now they seem to be using it regularly but time was they hadn't visited their own myspace in years- we used to laugh about it "Hey, sunn O))) hasn't been on their own myspace in over three years- haahah."
they used to have a decentish website with a forum though
and the singer used to participate in the forum a bit with updates about what's going on. Now all of that has disappeared.
They still log into their myspace occassionally but nothing ever seems to get updated. I think they are probably defunct, even if wikipedia says otherwise
If you like occult Victoriana-themed atmospheric black metal then try
A Forest of Stars.
http://www.aforestofstars.co.uk/
Amazing website too.
http://www.last.fm/music/A+Forest+Of+Stars
I'd suggest listening to "God"
cool
I tried to get them a support booking in London with Jarboe but she cancelled her tour and then I forgot about them but I will definitely look into them now.
