Joy Orbison
Seriously, how good is 'Hyph Mngo'? It's probably my favourite electronic thing I've heard all year, somehow manages all at once to be summery as hell, massively danceable and creatively produced, and sounds IMMENSE on a good club system.
Blackdown's essentially written his entire Pitchfork column about him this month: http://pitchfork.com/features/grime-dubstep/7680-grime-dubstep/
If you haven't heard any of it before, there's a link on here to a mix he's done, and it's great: http://dot-alt.blogspot.com/2009/06/joy-orbison.html
So yeah, check it.

its brilliant innit
blackdown linked to our sonic router blog in that article too!
I cant wait to get Hyph Mngo on hotflush they are killing it at the moment.
What's so impressive is it just seemed to come out of nowhere
There's a load of other producers making really interesting stuff at the minute but in a lot of cases it's been a case of gradually improving a la Ramadanman/Untold/Brackles, but for a first release it's pretty staggering.
yeah
Shortstuff is doing good things too and all the Wigflex lot, like The Hizatron. Untold is just something else his label Hemlock is awsome too, the latest one by James Blake is brilliant.
There is a good discussion going on that goes along side this pitchfork column on blackdowns blog.
http://blackdownsoundboy.blogspot.com/2009/07/where-do-u-call-it.html
Yeah I read this
It's been interesting in the past year with Blackdown, he certainly has seemed to have been distancing himself from the self-consciously limiting 'dubstep' niche he helped to create initially, even if his involvement was never in the 'perpetuating the same old wobble' area. Some of the stuff they were chatting about in the interviews with Loefah and Silkie on there seemed to point in the direction of his new attitude towards dubstep on the whole.
I think his point on the way the UK bass scene is going is a valid one - the most exciting stuff, as ever, happens along the lines where several different genres collide. Cross-pollination tends to be a good thing as it prevents stagnation, which we're seeing in all this generic halfstep wobble stuff at the moment.
yeah I agree
I've never really been one for a wobbler, the odd one or two in a set is good but not banger after banger. I've always been one to head for the margins of dance music though. Blackdown has been sayin this stuff for a few years now at least so its cool that its finaly got a big debate going. There is a big thread on dsf too.
Wow, on their myspace one of them has a Model 97 Winchester 12 gauge just like mine:
http://i587.photobucket.com/albums/ss315/hovercrab/Photo1999.jpg
nice music
oh yeah!
http://www.myspace.com/joyorbison
that looks like a badass gun
it's an ancestral firearm (my Daddy's gun)
Pitchfork loving it
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/11461-hyph-mngo/
Nice.
brilliant
the b-side wet look is ace too
What I love about Hyph Mngo is that it's not remotely complex.
All it does is turn my groove switch to "on." Getting back to what dance music is all about. It's just way too much fun. Supposedly out soon?
comes out in a few weeks
it has been getting loads of hype really early. I love how simple it is as well.
It's SO GOOD
Really can't wait to finally get it on wax.
This and Pangaea's "Memories"
have pretty much made the year for me.
Wasn't someone saying on here they heard Hyph Mngo on Radio 1 recently?
Memories
is so good I love Pangaea, he's done another cheeky R&B sampleing number called Why? and its quality. Not as heart breaking as Memories its a whole diffrent vibe. James Blake has done a freaky version of Bills Bills Bills by Destiny's Child now thats something a bit different.
James Blake's doing some properly amazing new stuff
Some of the bits that have turned up on Rob Booth's show are awesome.
Memories is the good stuff, but there have been so many good bits turning up this year - new Zomby, and Digital Flora which came out this week, plus everything on Hessle and Apple Pips.
If you like Pangaea, Fuzzy_Dunlop, you should check out Clubroot's album. It's not easy to get on physical but you can get a pretty cheap download from Boomkat and it's an amazing record. Sort of like an aquatic version of Burial.
(JAG - http://closebracket-openbracket.blogspot.com/2009/08/clubroot-clubroot-lo-dubs.html)
mary anne hobbs has
joy orbison mixing on her show soon with james blake and pearson sound (ramadanman) also doing mixes on the same show. should be a good 'un.
I just got Digital Flora today
there's no stopping Zomby is there! Have you heard the super cheese raveyness of Skream's I was in primary school, where were you in 92 remix of Float?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C96AcqeX2jQ
Its a beast!
Oh yeah I ordered the Clubroot album, really lookin forward to hearing it.
Digital Flora is, I think, my favourite thing he's done thus far.
Jaggage... http://closebracket-openbracket.blogspot.com/2009/08/zomby-digital-flora-brainmath.html
There's about three tunes on the Clubroot album that are absolutely stupidly brilliant - I can think of Talisman and Sempiternal right now but there's at least one or two more stone cold classics. Initially it took a few listens but once it sank in I fell madly in love with it.
I love his Brainmath stuff
the first one was so good. There should be a cheeky unknown producer dropping one on there at some point its been up on the myspace for a while now, see if you can guess who it is... track name spiders.
http://www.myspace.com/brainmathbrainmath
Talkin of the deeper end of the spectrum I'm really lookin forward to the Kryptic Minds album I keep reaching for One Of Us when I get on my decks.
More Jags the better!
I'll wack up my words on Hyph when I stick them up.
I've just realised I've thoroughly jagged this thread, apologies.
I haven't heard the Skream remix of Float actually either, that's my favourite tune from WWYI92?, so I'll have a listen now.
Wow, it's a proper breakbeat hardcore remix!
TUNE.
its gonna rip up the dance innit
the more I hear it the more I like it, it was a bit cheesey at first but its grown on me esspecialy after hearing it on the radio. Dusk & Blackdown dropped it and wheeled it on their rinse show the other night and it got me hooked.
ROY DIVISION.
haha
I loled
Wait, so this doesn't actually have a release date yet?
I went over to the Hotflush website...nothin'.
Sep 14th
is what it says on the press release.
More love

That Fact review is spot on I think, it's really done a good job of nailing exactly why Reynolds' criticism that it's not fully formed is just plain wrong.
I know it's been caned and is going to end up totally overplayed but I still cannot wait to get this.
I love a good nailing of Reynolds and all that
but Fact do it alot in their dubstep reviews now, I think they did it on their review of Zomby's one foot ahead of the other too. Its not like Reynolds is some kind of master critic of dubstep that needs to be engaged all the time, in fact he's maybe even to easy to nail as he often makes no sense while talking about it yet they keep wanting to drag him into it and almost make the balls he comes up with worth while. I guess I'll forgive them here though its been a pretty big debate with some heavy hitters, someone should get Blackdown and Reynolds in a room to debate it all haha
To be honest I don't tend to read a lot of what he writes these days because I find his commentary on dubstep pretty unconvincing
But the series of articles he wrote on dance music for the Wire (about seven of them I think) over the last fifteen years or so were all great and well worth reading - a little like more concise versions of the segments of Energy Flash, which is still an awesome read.
Seriously unconvinced by statements to the tune of 'I'd rather be in a crowd full of people going mental to Chainsaw Calligraphy than watch a crowd nodding along to Hyph Mngo though. A truly foolish opinion if I've ever heard one, mainly because every time I've heard Hyph Mngo played out the place has gone nuts.
I have a read sometimes when it makes a lot of noise
and people start laughing at him.
I know he's done good in the past I realy enjoyed Energy Flash and I think I've read some of the wire bits but its been ages since I've read owt by him that sounded on point.
Truesay, the Guardian K article was comical
i'm pretty sure he's been trolling to get a rise outta heads since that article
A la Everett True I guess
word from the router
http://sonicrouter.blogspot.com/2009/09/pre-order-joy-orbison-hyph-mngowet-look.html
Yeah Hyph!
http://thesonicminefeild.blogspot.com/2009/09/joy-orbison-hyph-mngowet-look-hotflush.html
such a big tune!
yep so big
that almost all the SR writers are writing about it.
Its up for pre-order right now and shipping on friday from places like Red Eye and Chemical, Boomkat to no doubt. I'm really lookin forward to gettin the 12" and having a good mix.
'Bout bloody time...
Yeah, looking forward to being able to actually play the 12".
Mary Anne
is playing it right now!
still gives me that big goon smile :D when I hear the chords ebbing there way in and the shivers when the first vocal drop happens, then all shit breaks loose when the beats n bass drop all at once!
Interview up on FACT

And Hyph Mygo seems to be in the shops!!! I'm gonna call my local dubstep seller to find out,but it's definitely in the central London shops:
http://www.phonicarecords.com/product/view/58422
I ordered it off Chemical last night, so it's definitely emerging
It wasn't in Sounds of the Universe when I was there on Tuesday though, shame.
Just emailed Hotflush
They said its out on the 14th - Monday. Pisses me off when online shops do this. Fair enough if they state the release date, but that Phonica page makes it look like they have it in stock.
Still looking forward to getting the vinyl,I've been deliberately not listening to it so that I don't get bored too early!
"I actually think I've developed the most from when 'Hyph' was first made to now"
o rly
so we have a lot to look forward to then. hullo 2010.
just seen this for pre-order
Joy Orbison - BRKLN CLLN / J. Doe : Doldrums, DLDRMS001
I guess we can expect this in the not to distant future then
Yeah J.Doe is on his myspace:)
yeah its ace
heard it in a few mixes, I love that all these new producers just start up labels too more bands should try it. You cant move for quality new labels from these guys, I mean people are starting to make Joker and his Kapsize label look like one of the old guard the rate these new labels are popping up.
lol
Yeah,so much for the death of the music industry!
Got Hyph Mngo yesterday and its ace:)
The vinyl sounds much better than the internet clips I'd heard before. I really like the long intro - hadn't heard that online. One of the singles of the year I reckon.
Should be arriving this morning :)
I got the second Hyperdub 5 twelve yesterday though, tis quite the greatness. It's excellent to have more Joker & Ginz.
I love that Samiyam track too
Zomby's aint to shabby either haha solid 12". The compilation is going to be too sick, Aidy's Girl, Weekendfly, Ikonika, King Midas Sound are the others I've heard off it on a sampler thingy cant really fault any of them love it. Now I just cant wait for Burial, Mala, Martyn, LD, LV, Quata 330.
Have you seen Darkstar's myspace lately?
Aidy's Girl is finally being released as a standalone 12" on Hyperdub in October. 'Bout bloody time, such an amazing track and it's been stupidly long since it first appeared on dubplate.
I'm particularly excited also about the new Burial and Mala tunes.
saw the dsf thread a bit back
its got a nice detroit techno/house remix from Kyle Hall as well.
I've heard Mala and Martyn's in mixes but not to often, its always an event when Mala drops can't get enough of him. It will be well nice to get some new Burial.
Apparently Hyph Mngo uses an Electric 6 sample
can't place it myself, surely it can't be the vocal?
hahah
really?
maybe this DiS boards can help out, I know cowcow likes to spin some Electric 6
Next release coming very soon!
Joy Orbison – BRKLN CLLN / J. Doe Doldrums
12 £4.49 DLDRMS001 28/09 UK NO BARCODE
Following on the release of the totemic ‘Hyph Mngo’ on Hot Flush, South London upstart Joy Orbison offers another dose of synth-infused garage-house kicks, this time as the debut 12" on his own imprint, Doldrums. Both recent highlights from his Ministry of Sound and Radio 1 mixes ‘J.Doe’ and ‘BRKLN CLLN’ find synth swells washing over an intoxicating UKG clatter. Press coverage from Resident Advisor, Pitchfork, Wire, FACT and NME; DJ support from Ben UFO, Mary-Ann Hobbs, DJ Flight, Gilles Peterson, Scuba, Untold and many more. Undoubtedly one of the hottest new producers coming up right now and destined for big things in a garage-dubstep-genius fashion.
May be earlier than that as this came from Cargo, but it may come out through ST Holdings before that.
LARGE
really lookin forward to it
my 12" came yesterday I've been mixing loadsa stuff with it, cant wait to play it out sometime.
this week I'm mostly hyped abot Quest - Last Days/The Unknown those two tracks are awsome.
You've got J.Doe already!
Will have a listen to Quest - sounds good:)
no sorry I meant Hyph
came yesterday
Quest is brilliant
Oh,I was gonna say!
Can't find any audio for Quest ATM
not seen any on the record shops either
I just know them from all the Anti Social Entertainment Rinse shows with Silkie, Quest, Jay 5... they've been around for ages Silkie and Quest are a bit like Mala they have stuff for ages and release it a year or 5 later and it still sounds fresh.
this Quest, yes?
http://www.myspace.com/conquestrecordings
Deep Medi crew. Loads more bigness coming from camp Joy.
The Shrew Would Have Cushioned The Blow, Smother...
Yeah thats Quest
I think theres a few more that make d'n'b hence the conquest The Unknown and Last Dayz go off in the dance, love seeing Silkie and Quest DJ out.
Zane Lowe's Hottest Record In The World!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/zanelowe/2009/09/hottest_record_joy_orbison_hyp.html
I really like this. Does that mean I like dubstep ?
I may have to back track on previous comments made..
hahah
there is loats of dubstep around that is in this vain so you may well do. If you're feeling Joy Orbison check out: Mount Kimbie, Brackles, Shortstuff, Martin Kemp, Untold, EL-B, Pariah, Sbtrkt, Geiom... loads of people. It's not all stupidly dark trudging pap or agresive post rave wobble there is loads of other sounds in there too.
Joker
I can see alot of people liking Joker, same with Guido and Gemmy too. Oh and James Blake who also dose stuff with Mount Kimbie and Air head, Mary Anne Hobbs reckon they'll be suporting Radiohead in no time but I reckon they'll have to fight off Darkstar for that right.
I may well check some of this out. I want stuff that sits well with
minimal techno / deep house, big bassey stuff. Have you heard the Modeselektor RA mix ? well I've been inspired by that basically.. Always happy to admit I'm wrong as well !!
there is loads of that about
I've got that Modeselektor mix yeah there are loads of good artists on that one just dig deeper with those lot. Ramadanman & Pearson Sound who is the same guy and the label he runs with Pangaea and Ben UFO Hessel Audio, Appleblim and his label Apple Pips, Shackleton, Headhunter, 2562 and A Made Up Sound are the same dude. They are very techno infused.
cheers fella. looks like I may be busy..
no probs
there is loads around you cant move for the stuff, hope you find some stuff to dig.
lol
I love Zomby he's got a new dubplate called... "Fck Ur Mgno" hahah
Dusk & Blackdown played it along with some others on Rinse the other night http://blackdownsoundboy.blogspot.com/2009/10/rinse-october.html mmmmmmm dubs
Even Sasha is making this an anthem, he played it to 40k kids...
https://twitter.com/sashaofficial/status/5370140868
If it wasn't winter it would be an ibiza anthem!
four tet's done a remix of joy orbison,
gilles peterson played it on his iplayerable show tonight.
it's very good, complexing it up a bit, but not boring idm.
Orbison's remixed Four Tet as well, tis coming out in a couple of weeks with a Roska remix (!) on the flip
Guess they're both of 'Love Cry'. I shall have to listen to that show, intrigued by what Four Tet would do with his music.
.
he's also just snuck out a mix of jose james with untold on the flip..it's on hype machine. BIG tune
