Golau Glau (damn! We've got yet another awesome band lurking about on DiS)
Anyone speak Welsh? "Golau Glau": Light Quick? Light Soon? Light & Sound? Don't know, don't speak it myself although I am one eight Welsh. I am half Erse and don't speak a word of Gaelic either. Funny, I am only one quarter Swedish and one eighth Danish but I am fluent in both Dansk and Svenska- go figure. Kidding- I can barely speak English and that is all.
There is some random lovelyness bubbling up somewhere in Leeds and possibly Criccieth, Wales and has begun to leak onto the internet and it is something called Golau Glau. Golau Glau is a band of some sort who is making infectious and charming music which they are sharing with certain enlightened individuals (like me) in an effort to make themselves a bit known in the world outside their studio. Golau Glau sent me four tracks off their album called "Arianna" and told me that the music is all the information they were comfortable sharing with us at this time. It seems these people are going to remain anonymous for a bit and withhold all the usual information which music people usually go clamoring for when they discover a new band like "what are their influences and who, what music do they listen to and oh, I don't know, silly stuff like: "WHAT THE HELL ARE THEIR NAMES?". Nah, I am a huge fan of obscurity and mystery; half the fun of being a Residents fan is not knowing who the crazy idiots that make their music are- it could be anybody, it could be your mailman, it could even be me. For the first two years after I became a dedicated SWANS fan I didn't even know what country they were from. Mostly because I became a SWANS fan before the internet was invented and not because of purposeful cloak of anonymity instituted by SWANS.
Golau Glau did share with me this cryptic message: "We lurk on DiS. YES." , "Golau Glau are two of our favorite words that go well to gether." , "The noise in our heads keeps leaking out."
Yes, I think Golau Glau are now two of my favorite words and their "noise" has now leaked into my unsuspecting and innocent noggin as well- mi caru Golua Glau!! Damned if they haven't got me vamping around the house in my unders and a feather boa singing songs about "beautiful nostrils" and girls buying records when they "snap".
Here's what I CAN tell you about Golau Glau just from the music:
I love all four tracks:
La Dame Blanche
Snap
Soft Silver Young
Summer Games
There is at least one female in this band (that is soooo obvious). I seems they've employed someone's gran to play the old Hammond organ. They've scared up a nasty conga player and threw in some smokey samba dub beats and came up with a mysterious and lovely concoction which smacks of a teenage Peggy Lee vis a vis Vaselines vis a vis Stereolab teaming up with the Hello Kitty Kabaret miraculously resulting in dreamy and exquisitely bubbling music. Warning: the surgeon general has found Golau Glau to be clinically cute which can cause normal testosterone levels to suddenly drop to gay levels. (not a bad thing)
Bottom line: I suspect many others lurking about on DiS are going to love (cherwch) Golau Glau, I do:

Um, hi
GGx
-
o'well
Really, really do love the songs!!!!
Could I trouble you for a lyric key?
Hey, don't worry about this, it was kind of a lame piece, no reflection on Golau Glau. I'll be blabbing plenty about you guys. Go make music now.
-
here, you can download their latest album for free from last fm
http://www.last.fm/music/Golau+Glau/Arianna
also, this is actually good enough, might check out those other two bands youre pimping l8r sir
-
: ) Not "pimping"-"heralding" Hey, it's happening here and now. These bands are great!!!
Yeah Dood, bloody hell, I love it but you know me; I'll be all effusive and pimp any band I love- I do it all the time. It's just more exciting when I am an heralding an unknown band and I get to pimp them first.
It's sad because Esben and the Witch are great writers, they give very mindful, coherent and intelligent interviews and their correspondence is very well written- they could and should do their own writing to the public but I guess that'd be tacky.
check out Esben and the Witch too:
http://www.soundcloud.com/esben-and-the-witch
http://www.last.fm/music/esben+and+the+witchGolau Glau seem the same, in a letter to me they describe their new album "Arianna" thusly: "Arianna" is effectively an ongoing depository... as we finish new songs we're happy with they go here for free download" :
check out Golau Glau: They just formed about a month ago and they've had about 10 listens on Last FM- why not be among the first in the world to hear their music?
-

I requested a lyric key from them and got told that it may be unwise to delve too deep
and that the "black and white" of Golau's lyrical content and the literal gist of their themes might be a bit overwhelming or too stark in and of themselves alone.
I read somewhere that one of their songs was about a family who leaps to their deaths from a railway trestle but I can't suss out which song that is except that "La Dame Blanche" uses choo choo sounds as a rhythm track all through it and the singer refrains the phrase: "watching trains".
Yeah, the lyrics are a bit tantalizing in their playful enigma.
-
That one's 'Soft Silver Young', and it was from Beachy Head
We can tell you if you want what they're about in terms of the stories/events/things that inspired them, which are all true, we'd just rather people didn't sit and pore over the words separately at the moment. Maybe one day. We're not embarrassed by them. Some are quite oblique, we know. We'd just rather people got what they wanted from them instead of being prescriptive. Perhaps that's naive of us.
'La Dame Blanche' is about female and teenaged spies in Belgium in World War I. That was the name of the network.
-
I have come to the conclusion...
That I like you a lot.
like lots and lots.
very well done
-
Actually, I do much prefer a lyrical conundrum over obvious information
Unless the obvious information is itself a puzzle or bares up a double entendre of some sort like: "Now, I wanna be your dog" - is he being subservient or does he want doggy style sex? Given the lines proceeding this one it is obvious he wants the latter but taken out of context it holds much more interest.
Lyrics which exist outside of context or clear anecdotal underpinnings make the experience of words one of an ever expanding or contracting and ever evolving nature. That's what I love about a lyricist such as Paul Banks. So true about "poring over lyrics". It's so much more enjoyable to let them come to whatever life or fruition they're naturally destined or even randomly likely to have. It is cool to have that smidgeon of background color such as you've just given for "La Dame Blanche" but not as a starting point for whatever experience you're bound to have of the song. That is cool information to have come to you later on. Now I get to spend the next ten years thinking about girl spies de Belgique and how that relates to "watching trains" - no don't tell me! I'll figure it out. I actually only asked for lyrics at all in hopes of triggering vantage points from which to write about the music not because I naturally thirst to know the meaning of lyrics.

*blushes*
Thank you.

New song
http://www.last.fm/music/Golau+Glau/Arianna/A+Better+Drinker (on Myspace too)
We know it's quiet. But compression was making it clip.
-
I was JUST burning "Arianna" as I saw this
funny
I'll make another one soon
-
I am just in the midst of burning "Arianna" and now you've got a new one
I love on going repositories as opposed to you typical albums. They are the albums that truly keep on giving.
-
"A Better Drinker" (track 5?)
Are we basically watching an album take shape here? The pacing of the eight tracks I have, in the order they appear in my itunes library thus far seems very good. This "Arianna" project of yours is like being at the end of a pneumatic tube waiting for the next piece of the puzzle to come swooshing in. I remember hearing about crowds of people in America in the nineteenth century standing on the docks waiting for installments of Dickens' tales to arrive. They would actually shout up to the people on the arriving boats and ask for them to tell them what's happened next in the book.
So, you formed a little over a month ago and now you've got these eight songs in your ongoing depository. By Halloween, "Arianna" will be a 40 song tour de force of . In that time might we see Golau Glau throwing us any change ups or curves in the songs of August, September or October? Seems logical given the pace of your output but I don't want to jinx it- ce sera sera.
-
Yes I agree with this massively
Loving the depository Idea.
I adore reading about the days when novels were published daily in chapterts in newspapers for people to read then when it was done published in there complete form, what a wonderful way of doing things, now the only thing that gets that treat ment is parts of celebritry wank offs about "traumatising" hair straightener incidents.
GG getting better and better but Saint Cronin is right, would be suprised if there is no change at this speed of writing and releasing, hopefully towards even better shores!
-
a guitar based projection of ep length and...
...another conga song
an accordion song with sax, brushes and or handclaps
a song with vibra slap and electric piano
Daniel Copeman Remixes!!!
Esben and the Witch cover of Placer Hush, La Dame Blanche or Snap!
(pssst~How's Esben and the Witch's new recording coming? Honestly, your new ep is what I anticipate with the most eagerness; more than Paul Banks' record or even a surprise record from Boris. I look forward to it more than Liars even!!!~)
-
No guitars
Unless they don't sound like normal guitars. And none of us play guitar anyway. It's in the rules.
-
Well duh, who plays guitars normally? no matter...
...beastly things anyway.
I was just probing around a little, hoping to shake loose any tidbit of extra information about Golau Glau. How about talking a little about your anonymous persona? I am sure you have your reasons, would you like to share them? Are you familiar with other bands who've maintained secrecy in regards to their identities such as The Residents who have kept their identities hidden for nearly 40 years? Or Clinic, who use their real names but conceal their physical identities? Is it more of an internet safety protocol?
?

Aiieeeee, tennis anyone?
I kid that my Son and I have been gaming with for centuries has a Virtual Boy console that he bought on ebay when he and my Son were were about 12 year olds.

-
Ooh
Can we "borrow" it?
-
Yeah!!
Come to Montana
but...
He's leaving for Game Design "uni"l in Seattle soon. I'll ask if he's taking it with him and if he wouldn't mind if I sent to you- to BORROW.
-
Do let us know
Also if he makes any cool games.
-
: (
my son says that friend sam will more than likely be taking it to the school so he can impress his mates with his nintendo purist, completist guruisms but we could probably talk him into parting with his nintendo power glove (cause it sucks).
But I will make him an arianna disc and tell him the Golau Glaus want to use it- you never know.
-
Holy crap- he said yes!!!
He said you guys can use it if you buy a new power adapter for it. He's lost his and has been using it with batteries. He also said he only two has games:
tennis & baseball (both with nintendo characters)
-
That's amazing
Thank you so much.
HE HAS A POWER GLOVE? We have an NES. We dreamed of a Power Glove. Possibly because of its terrible reputation. But mostly its super styling.

Meeeeeeeeeeeeee!
I speaketh the Cymraeg. Yeah, it's probably meant to mean 'Quick Light' / 'Rapid Light', although it could also mean 'Audible Light' I guess....which probably sounds even cooler.
Diolch for the heads up - looking forward to hearing this :-)
