Blur at Glastonbury.
Not very good. The band sound tight enough, but Albarn doesn't seem up to it. Sad to see bands like this come back after their time for no other reason than they're a bit skint. Thought they'd be a lot better, to be honest.

Blur
so its you who's tagging the threads NAD & U2
they're doing alright
I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would. I'm just not hungry for a blur reunion as I grew up with all of this music and it doesn't seem distant enough to me to warent a comming back.
it ain't bad
it's as good as they are ever going to be.
reminds me that alex james is a great bassist even if he is a complete toss.
they could be playing dross..that audience won't care
Albarn seems too into it, if anything.
Like he's trying to compensate for folk saying they're in it for the money - "Nah, I'm really enjoy this - look at me giving it some!" Coxon looks awkward and like he wants to be home with a pot of tea. I'm amazed he still has that t-shirt too.
Why has Coxon lowered himself to this, blur are/were shite.
Erm... this was ace
until the fucking beeb cut it off
Gah,
Is it Zane Lowe's job to interrupt music? That spotify ad makes me stab things
oh
so its finished then?
I might go back and watch some Glastonbury, then.
albarn isnt up for it?
are you watching the same thing
theyve been alright yeah, country house wasnt very different like i expected
vocally, i meant.
that rendition of Parklife was one of the most cringeworthy things i've seen in my life.
I don't need to see Phil fucking Daniels dancing around like a sad uncle. Cheers.
for a thing like this
i always think it's stuff like end of the century, tender, the universal that really goes great
Ow come on...
that gig is ace. And I'm a Pulp fan, Suede might even come second as far as the Britpop era goes. But they're tearing it right up. Certainly a heck of a lot better than the Black Eyed Peas the BBC cut to after...
It's certainly not ace or tearing anything up, comparing them to black eye peas, oh dear.
I wish Alex James wasn't wearing those jeans.
"I need to be down with the kids. I can't be wearing my farmyard cords on stage."
the universal!
blub
I really couldn't bear it
My opinion, and all but sorry, I had to leave the room. They could barely play. It's only cos I know the melodies were there that I could "hear" them. Albarn just shouts. Ironically, seeing as they were in (a somewhat media constructed) competition with Oasis for so many years, that was one of the most horribly ladish things I've seen for some time.
I am now listening to Xiu Xiu to bring myself back to some kind of equilibrium.
this
albarn was just bellowing away for the whole thing... a couple of good moments but not enough MLIR material (unless they played it while the bbc were showing fucking black eyed peas or something) and tender went on for FAR
TOO
LONG
yup MLIR stuff was during the beeb break
Underwhelming.
If Jo Whiley likes something it's guaranteed to be shit. I have to turn the mute on whenever Zane Lowe talks, the most annoying voice, vocal delivery, opinions, presenter ever.
She said just before
that Karen O was just one of the many iconic women at the festival this year. Now, I love Karen O more than most people in the world but, shit, she ain't iconic. Neither is any other woman on that stage this weekend. Use a fucking dictionary woman.
Doesn't Jo Whiley like *everything* though
I agree totally.
I still enjoyed it, but it wasn't triumphant. And I'd been looking forward to it quite a bit. Nice that they played Country House though despite Graham apparently hating it.
Why is this thread tagged Ned's Atomic Dustbin?
They seem like a band that get unreasonably mocked. I wasn't even really alive when they were properly famous but listening to God Fodder recently I have found it to be consistently excellent. Maybe you had to be around at the time...
yep
ah god fodder
awesome stuff
this is a great thread
Well I saw them In Newcastle on Thursday
and it was absolutely fucking amazing. I shook Albarns hand, twice, and Coxon did a forward roll whilst playing the guitar solo in Popscene. Also they did two encores and played Advert and Oily Water. I haven't seen the Glastonbury gig though, it's recorded, doubt it will be as good as Thursdays gig like.
People who keep saying Coxon looked awkward:
Coxon always looks awkward. it doesn't mean anything. stop looking for clues
Blasphemy!
I'm wishing all ye naysayers into the corn field. *zing*
They were fucking great!
This bodes well for friday. Honestly people, you are so full of shit when it comes to things loke this. Really, what is your fucking problem?!
*like
This will teach you all for watching live music broadcast on TV
When will people learn, eh?
IT'S ALWAYS SHITE.
^ This
BTW Do you get the feeling that Mr Giro doesn't like Blur that much?
Quite possibly
Even the stuff I watched at Glastonbury in '98 that was awesome looked crap when I watched it back on video the week afterwards.
It never really does it justice does it? It baffles me that some people want dozens of music DVD's in their collection...
Good one.
I like Blur's music, i've owned all the records, i like Graham Coxon, but the rest of them are insufferable bores. Me questioning the logic of people paying £45 to see them live, and then that they were poor at Glastonbury from what i could see, has no bearing on my thoughts of their music. I like them, always have, but Albarn & James are horrendously dull and Coxon was better as a solo artist.
maybe you should see them live then you can judge if..
a) they actually sound good (as opposed to what they sound like on TV)
b) £45 is economically the correct amount to see them
Instead of justing started neagtive threads, one of which you started by accusing everybody that disagrees with you (ie would pay £45 to see them) as a 'retarded muppet'. You can understand why I got the wrong impression about your views of blur.
Did they play Bank Holiday?
no
Are the majority of you fucking retarded?
Blur absolutely destroyed Glasto and were just amazing. End of.
this
^this again
Gutted I wasn't there, even on the TV it looked fantastic. Not sure what performance everyone else was watching...
I soooo disagree!
I thought they were fucking ace. Albarn seemed like he was loving it and giving it some right welly. Shame it got cut off half way thru... wish I'd gone now ;-(
It was exactly the same set as in Newcastle
so I'm hoping they'll mix it up a bit for Hyde Park. I want Colin Zeal!
Blatant jealousy
It always amazes me when people can't tell a good performance from a bad one. Blur absolutely nailed it last night and were obviously having the time of their lives, particularly moving bearing in mind the band's falling out in the past. If you don't like Blur's music than fair enough but you gotta give it to em, they put their heart and soul into it. When I read criticisms like those above I just imagine a load of wannabe musicians in their bedrooms dreaming that they could be on stage at Glastonbury for just a minute. But they never will be and they know it. So instead they make a dumb comment about how crap they were on an internet messageboard and it feels like some small victory, but it's actually SO insignificant. The whole band will be so buzzing after that closing show and so they should. Yeah and f*ck Zane Lowe. I wanted to see This is a Low.
i didnt watch any glasto to be honest so cant comment on the performance of blur
but id rather be shot with balls of my own shite than listen to them
thanks for that, you've added a great deal to the thread.
good performance/bad performance
subjective?
i'm not saying they didn't put everything they had into it but that was the problem, it just came across a bit brash and laddish and oasisish... i'm not trying to score points off blur (obviously) but i'm kind of glad i'm not going to hyde park now.
obviously it is subjective!!!
However if we only have objective discussions there would be no fucking threads on this site. 99% comments here are subjective and the other 1% are incorrect infomation from wikipedia - FACT!
I sense that 90% of people on this thread.....
view Oasis and Panic at the disco as seminal? Blur were amazing. Fact.
It was amazing to see them, and they definietly seemed really up for it...
I'm glad i saw them in the relative confines of the Newcastle Academy though as there'll always be something lost in the perfromance of a band like blur at a massive outdoor gig. Sill amazing though by all accounts.
subjective to a point
but it's like with The Boss, even if you don't like him you couldn't say that was a bad performance. Depends what constitutes a bad performance, I mean they were tight as f*ck, played all the hits with gusto and Damon jumped around a lot and still managed to sing. What's not to like? Are people deaf or what? they hit it! and to accuse them of being laddish? Well that is Damon's image and that's what made them appeal to the pogo-ing masses. That is their brilliance I think, laddish, unpretentious lager swigging energy but with wonderful musical intricacies from Graham teamed with fantastic songwriting. They were always onto a winner.
I thought it was great.
Tender, For Tomorrow, End of A Century, Song 2, Universal, Tracy Jacks all sounded like they should, and the band really looked up for it. How pissed was Albarn though?
I liked the lyric change
'Love in the 90s was paranoid'
I don't know why. I just did.
'as you get closer, to 50'
was a good one
it was amazing
everyone who was actually there will admit it. i don't even like them that much but they were really memorable. judging tv performances is silly
you were sober, i take it?
because it'd be pretty silly to accuse people of not being able to judge the performance whilst you yourself were inebriated.
he would still have more reason to judge
considering HE WAS THERE AND YOU WEREN'T
had a pint of brothers over a pie at about 8
but didn't want to drink much liquid as i would be pissing loads and knew i would be there for a while and wanted to enjoy the last night/band with my friends without needing to go off to the toilets. but then i went to the park and got pretty drunk. but then it rained and bars closed so i went back to my tent and slept for a few hours and got up early and came home.
thanks for asking though, i did not realise that alcohol made you unable to use your senses and i am glad i didn't have too much, boy i would look stupid on the internet if i did!
the points was...
drunk, at a festival especially, getting caught up in the moment, whatever with loads of pals, especially seeing a band you like and who are on a comeback tour, your judgement of a gig is just as likely to be skewed one way or the other as someone sat at home watching on TV.
To suggest that someone shouldn't have any opinion on the quality of a gig because they watched it on TV is one of the most retarded things i've read on this website. Not gain as good an impression of the atmosphere there, sure, but quality of gig, nah. Silly.
it's not silly.
i'm surprised more people haven't pulled you up on this. there is no comparison between watching a gig on tv and actually being there. maybe you'd like to think that
an opinion
yes, but as informed an opinion? no. he (we) are in much more of a position to comment.
plus i juts plain disagree with your opening gambit. they were incredible, i didn't have huge expectations but i was blown away. the crowd was loving it, the atmosphere was amazing, the band were tight as hell, the sound was unbelievable (nowhere near the sound captured by the tv coverage i have just been watching - obviously) and they played all the right songs. it couldn't have gone any better i don't think. and they band were so in to it, albarn's vocals and coxon's backings were spot on. spot. on.
THEY WERE BRILLIANT!
if you'd been there you would know. they were phenomenal. alex james is incredible, too. never really appreciated how good he actually is
alex james' wife ^
It was absolutely fucking amazing
Does anyone have a
setlist? Links at all?
..
http://www.bbc.co.uk/glastonbury/2009/artists/blur/
Thank
you pal!
It was out of this world
I don't think they could have made it any better... Yes some it was laddish but Tender and To the End where truly moving
How pissed was Mark Radcliffe.
just got back
they were absolutely amazing. One of the best gigs i've seen. Tender was beautiful
Best headline set at a festival I have been in
I really enjoyed every second of it, both the band and crowd displayed great energy in what was a really fun and great set list. The double encore was awesome
+ I was a bit drunk
but not too much as anyone would know whose been there that getting drunk at a 2hour gig at glasto is stupid due to pee issues
all that's needed is to create a human cloak
desperate times call for desperate measures
^
my mate used a flag
Just got back
Blur won Glastonbury. Tender was the anthem of the festival. On record, Tender isn't that great. Last night it was that great. The whole site was singing it for hours afterwards. They were really amazing.
I'm still drunk and tired, been up since 4am so you'll have to forgive me if my criticism isn't at its most incisive at this juncture. But yeah, Blur were ace, so there.
