That would be a great show. We could get Jim Bowen in and he could have a go at 'lo-fi' and make a joke about having a bad back and not being able to bend down that far.
I like the homemadeness, the mistakes, the intimacy and in the momentness, I don't like it when bands deliberatly make their recordings sound bad and then try to pretend that they are just doing the former
But I absolutely fucking hate deliberately self-consciously lo-fi production. It's really really fucking annoying and the musical equivalent of a middle-class cultural tourist who thinks it's a laugh to play at being "poor".
I mean, Times New Viking have become one of my favourite bands, but it's been hard work. I really couldn't stand all the crappy production and had to really dig through it to get into the great hooks underneath. The same happened with their peers, like Eat Skull. But I often find myself hoping that their next release is 'properly' produced. Sometimes I have to listen to moderation, because all the static gets on my wick.
But it doesn't actually cost all that much to make well-produced recordings. I go on about Steve Albini's recording style all the time... but he records bands for a very cheap or fair price and always produces high sound quality. That, to me, would be a better statement: you can hear these songs perfectly clear, but they're not giving you a headache. Whereas lo-fi and super-slick production can give me a headache.
It's well produced for what the band could afford at the time. It was also run through distortion during production to give it an extra edge. It's done very well. It's also my favourite album ever.
youre living all over me was recorded to tape, really loudly leading to tape saturation and natural distortion, sounds great, im guessing tnv et al use computers (which is why it is annoying when they claim it just how they sound when they record) to boost the volume as much as possible, hacking off the top of the waves leading to unnatural nasty distortion, sounds good for atari teenage riot not so good for indie rock. I may be completely wrong about everything though.

as just having that as their aesthetic. It doesn't really bother me to be honest, because as haribo says above, it's a pretty unique sound when most things are compressed and shined up beyond belief - I really hate in particular that shiny tech metal/post rock production which seems to be so in vogue - it sounds so saccharine and saps all the grunt from the record.
some people like it recorded that way. 'loretta's scars', pavement: one of my favourite songs ever, and the vocal on it is completely drowned out by the instruments. times new viking, i love the way their albums are recorded. i can't explain it logically really, just that kind of sound does it for me, you can't dismiss it as shit just cos you don't like it
I really don't see what's so great about making something sound like it's got dodgy lo-fi production. It's a bit like these guys on the social board who say they like their women to have imperfections. Why? I want everything perfect.
It's so bloody boring - there's no dynamics or grunt to the sound, it just all washes over you. It's like a really shitty cheap convertible - looks flash, but got no soul or actual power behind it.

It's A Cop-Out!

i don't know what you mean?
I like it when it is people making the best of rudimentary equipment
I like the homemadeness, the mistakes, the intimacy and in the momentness, I don't like it when bands deliberatly make their recordings sound bad and then try to pretend that they are just doing the former
Haha
It's always your choice to listen to music, so I don't see why how they are recorded makes a fuck-all bit of difference if you WANT to listen to it.
Alternatively, I could grow a sense of humour and bother with this conversation man :-)
It's fine if a band have got absolutely no other way of recording and want to get the songs out.
But I absolutely fucking hate deliberately self-consciously lo-fi production. It's really really fucking annoying and the musical equivalent of a middle-class cultural tourist who thinks it's a laugh to play at being "poor".
i don't agree.
i think in a lot of cases it's a reaction against overcompressed, super slick production, which in itself is much more annoying and destructive
It's a bit of a silly statement to be making though.

what about something like 'you're living all over me'
technically it's not well-produced but god forbid it was cleaned up cos it wouldn't sound as good
Yeah, but it's not a fucked up, static mess.
It's well produced for what the band could afford at the time. It was also run through distortion during production to give it an extra edge. It's done very well. It's also my favourite album ever.
top 5
think it might come down to analog vs digital

I've accepted TNV, Sic Alps and Eat Skull
as just having that as their aesthetic.
The other thing about TNV of course is that they're ultra trebly anyway
- no bassist.
I agree with that to a large degree
of course sometimes it is preferable to overproducing something.
Times new viking are unlistenably lo fi though.
Japandroid are just the right amount of lo fi.
When something is made to sound lo-fi on purpose, when there was no need for it
then yes, I completely agree with you.
'when there's no need for it'
that's a very hard thing to define.
Any lo-fi made to sound like that on purpose
is shit. That's all I'm saying, you can't possibly pick holes in that.
why though?

of course it personal opinion

But you must admit all this shiny electro blippy post rock produced stuff is so bloody tame
It's so bloody boring - there's no dynamics or grunt to the sound, it just all washes over you. It's like a really shitty cheap convertible - looks flash, but got no soul or actual power behind it.
It's all about
NO-FI!
Your statement is true for all rock artists
but not for electronic artists
the DIS unabomber strikes again
Nah
way more bands have been ruined by over-production than under-production
In general I like to hear songs produced properly...
I do not normally want music I listen to at home to sound like it would sound like live if played in the top room of a spit and sawdust pub.
Hence why TNV are too much effort for me, having listened to most of their recorded output.
HARDLY ART, HARDLY STARVING
HARDLY ART, HARDLY GARBAGE.
:)
if its done alright its fine
if it sounds like shit and the music is shit then its really annoying more so than stuff that is hi-fi and shit, somehow...
