but I have to say I love the Micachu album. I'm rubbish at explaining why though. I *think* it's got something to do with the complicated textures - the way the layers of guitars and electronics blend together and add up to simple catchy pop tunes. Plus I really like her voice. I dunno, I just find that album really addictive. I took me about 4 listens to *get* but when I did I was like *fuck* this is awesome. It's died a little for me now, but still, when of faves of the year so far.
and the sounds fit together really well, and there are pop hooks and it goes from one thing to the next thing really quickly, kind of like the unicorns in that respect. i like them/her/it.
I applaud a band that will use just about anything for an instrument, but what I really like about them is the unabashed catchyness. Also enjoy the production values, and they're odd which is a good thing. Some people will probably think they're guff but that's because they'll be the types that are into 'proper songs'. WELL FUCK THEM.
I find the album Jewellery genuinely exciting as it actually tickles my brain and reminds me that there are still unexplored musical avenues, but what they combine the best is experimentality and pop values. It's just not for the NME crowd... To make stark and arrogant generalisation!
Really, like most music that you enjoy, it's almost unexplainable. It's clearly not going to be for everyone, and it took me about a month to really think the record was anything other than childish and amateurish. Somehow it's endearing in its DIY attitude, and you discover that there are some incredible little pop songs in there, bursting with new life. Leaping from one idea to the next without a care in the world, Mica Levi's music invigorates as you listen. I think more artists should have a "devil-may-care" slant to their music. Rough and ready, experimental, everything I've ever wanted to hear in pop music. Simple.
Apparently there are hooks. Where? Unecessarily Messy, stop/start pop music, accompanied by the most horrible vocals you can imagine. There's nothing I can appreciate about this at all.
Why so reactionary? There a young group who just put out their debut. No wonder music is so stagnant at the moment; whenever something unusual comes out, so called music-lovers go out of their way to stick the boot in.
I won't try to convince you that it's good. I just don't understand why your first post was *so* negative. Because they've received some hype? Not their fault.
And surely you must hear some of the pop hooks/catchiness? Golden Phone?
the blend of bleepy electronic beats and natural, organic percussion. They have an interesting sound, a strange mish-mash of urban, London Animal Collective meets Solex type weirdness. I like it.
No, wait, i mean, WHAT A RACKET WHY?? WHY??? HELP WHYY??
I just couldn't get anything from my listening experience. It's quite irritating that people assume everyone who doesn't like it, automatically doesn't appreciate "weird/different" music. I appreciate some "weird/different" music, just not this.
Don't get what's up with the indier than thou stance that seems to be hanging around this thread. People assuming just 'cause you don't like this that you're going out of your way to stamp out anything that sounds weird. That "No wonder music is so stagnant at the moment" by phreak up above is ludicrous and unnecessary. Reeks of "Rah, rah, I'm a better music fan than you because I like this and you are a cloth-eared buffoon".
Then isn't saying a new band is rubbish just because it doesn't appeal to you "ludicrous and unnecessary" also? I'm sorry but it does seem like some people on this forum are continuously negative. I don't usually comment on it but I couldn't resist this time. Anyway, glad at least some people share my opinion of this band.
Really didn't like it - strong negativity
Didn't like it, but no strong feelings - mild negativity
Not bad, decent music - mild positivity
Great stuff - strong positivity
I'm sure you get the picture. People should be allowed to express their opinions on bands, without getting slated for it. I disliked this and I said so. I wasn't overly fussed by the Dana...kroyd release, so that response was more like "meh, s'alright I guess". I shouldn't be expected to pussy foot around, just in case I upset someone, who happens to be a little over sensitive about music.
just clicked straight away with me. it's just catchy, original pop music. i'm getting the feeling that they're a bit marmite though; i wouldn't bother trying to get into them if you weren't initially grabbed.
I like the sound of the music behind it but the voice grates a bit on me. I might get over it if I grab the album, I've only heard a few tracks here and there. But she kinda reminds me to much of the voice noel feilding puts on while singin songs as the hitcher in the mighty boosh (I fuckin love the boosh btw). I'm nto sure I can handel that for more than a few listens unfortunatly.
have finally persuaded me to check out this album, i've had people banging on about it for ages, but only now am i persuaded that they're attention towards the album is more than just indie-affection, there must be something about it for it to divide people like this; so it's definitely worth checking out i think.
Loved it. Infinitely more interesting than 90% of what else I've heard this year. I suspect the album couldn't maintain the standard for its duration but I might get it to find out.
Adventures in the Beetroot Field mini festival at Fabric last Thursday...probably my favourite all night, sounded genuinely unsettling and unusual and post punky fun without trying too hard (hello Apes and Androids)
Listened to them on Spotify, and the music is alright actually. It's not great but I hardly find anything great these days anyway.:-) But then I saw some live footage on Youtube and was a bit disappointed. Because it seemed so dull and lifeless and they had no charisma on stage. But then, they're not the only ones getting the hype and then life turn out to be completely unexcited. Plus they have "the hair". I can't take any band serious with "the hair", if you knkow what I mean. The music is quite good though, mind you.
They aren't actively dull, and shite. Just really quite average. I managed to listen to the album the whole way through, but it got to be a chore towards the end.

im with you, bro
lol
Explain what exactly?
They're a band.
Well done, Clive.
I meant why is the album gettig so much praise. I've just listened to a preview of it on Lala and it's bobbins.
Presumably why most albums get praise
Because people like it.
A lot of shit albums get praise
I cannot for the life of me understand the fuzz made over Kings of Leon...I actually like the Micachu album, it was not what I expected at all.
No
It's not likely to convince you anyway is it.
Ok breif overview of what their sound is like please.
I was interested to hear them, now I'm not so sure. Twaddle?
.
listen to em and make up your own mind!
I agree with this.
Sounds like a fucking Pokemon band.
it really does
although pokemon musci is better
i'm basing this on

vs

.
what is there to explain?
This disappearance of post is dis-fucking-satisfying!
i saw them live
it just sounded like an awful racket. I don't get all this praise at all.
Usually with you on most things KiK

I wasn't blown away when I checked them out on Spotify
About to listen again though.
all the sounds are good sounds
and the sounds fit together really well, and there are pop hooks and it goes from one thing to the next thing really quickly, kind of like the unicorns in that respect. i like them/her/it.
They're decent
I applaud a band that will use just about anything for an instrument, but what I really like about them is the unabashed catchyness. Also enjoy the production values, and they're odd which is a good thing. Some people will probably think they're guff but that's because they'll be the types that are into 'proper songs'. I really like it.
really poppy and hooky. Maybe you should listen to it more than just the previews. Pitchfork gave it a 7.9 but I think it is an 9.1.
just been
confirmed for Field Day this year.. adventures and the beetroot field stage.. glad some of the people on here like them!
That is fantastic news
Not seen them live yet so this will be an ideal opportunity!
Glorious racket
That rare thing: an independent, imaginative, pioneering British act.
They are awkward, deliberately so, and the only thing that could go wrong is the hype machine moving into - and then out of - gear.
Micachu
Weird shit. Weird shit. Good, but totally weird shit.
And kucos for using a vacuum cleaner on record :D
Amazing.

Oh christ
Not this as well..
Agreed.
Apparently there are hooks. Where? Unecessarily Messy, stop/start pop music, accompanied by the most horrible vocals you can imagine. There's nothing I can appreciate about this at all.
"Unecessarily Messy, stop/start pop music...most horrible vocals"
Why so reactionary? There a young group who just put out their debut. No wonder music is so stagnant at the moment; whenever something unusual comes out, so called music-lovers go out of their way to stick the boot in.
It's nothing to do with it being unusual
I just don't like it.
Fair do's then
I won't try to convince you that it's good. I just don't understand why your first post was *so* negative. Because they've received some hype? Not their fault.

...
No. Saying a band is rubbish because it doesn't appeal to you is actually quite a natural reaction.
This is how it works...
Really didn't like it - strong negativity
Didn't like it, but no strong feelings - mild negativity
Not bad, decent music - mild positivity
Great stuff - strong positivity

OK
Keep going, you're doing great.
i don't think there's much to explain really
just clicked straight away with me. it's just catchy, original pop music. i'm getting the feeling that they're a bit marmite though; i wouldn't bother trying to get into them if you weren't initially grabbed.
I'm not sure I can get past her voice

very catchy pop tunes
great album.
Heard one tune
Loved it. Infinitely more interesting than 90% of what else I've heard this year. I suspect the album couldn't maintain the standard for its duration but I might get it to find out.
they/her were awesome at that...

Did so last night at the ICA. One of the most refreshing and exciting things going on in British music at the moment.
great band
great songs
great show
For once I agree with KiK
They aren't actively dull, and shite. Just really quite average. I managed to listen to the album the whole way through, but it got to be a chore towards the end.
