There's really no contest.
from time to time I get really obsesed with Joy Devision and have to put everything they have done on loop for days then I'm alright again.
I'm going through that right now, listening to:
Unknown Pleasures -> Closer -> Still -> Substance
Closer > Unknown Pleasures >>>>>>>> Still
Substance is amazing as well, probably equal to UP, but I won't count it as its just singles. Their early songs like No Love Lost are just so good.
It'll be because I've killed myself, The Idiot on the stereo, noose around my neck.
..but I'm not keen on the first 6 tracks - i'd probably take anything from Unknown Pleasures over them.
Unknown Pleasures is well better.
Disc 4 of Heart & Soul is the awesomeness.
are brilliant too
decades or 24 hours for me best two songs.... mmmm
I rate unknown pleasures higher, due the fantastic new dawn fades being on it. But I don't dislike any of the joy divisions output. Except the fact that they have like 4 best ofs.
While I can still appreciate that it's miles ahead of anything they did before, and anything else around at the time, it doesn't connect with me the same way it used to.
due to the fact it's not even as good as unknown pleasures.
I absolutely love Joy Division and all their releases (especially Closer), but it really isn't the best album ever. Compare Closer to something like The Velvet Underground and Nico, or Daydream Nation and it just doesn't compare. In my opinion it is great but not the greatest because of its lack of full emotional range.
Or do they suffer from shitty compression and reduced dynamic range/ OMG LOUDNESS WARZZZZ?
...my opinions always changing.
the best of the beatles
One of my favourite albums by so far, doesn't get much better than this.
I don't care that it's a "singles" compilation -- Substance (with Appendix) is the best Joy Division album.
and I feel like you just sucked me right back in. Normally the lack of their music on my new computer would be a problem... Fucking Spotify.
is righteous. but best album ever?
meat is murder.
is definitely good, but the new White Lies is seriously up there for me. Might even be the better record, if you discount the joy division legend etc... Trust me, in 10 years time people will look at White Lies in the same way they rate JD today.
I don't dislike Joy Division and they've influenced some of my favourite bands, such as Cocteau Twins and The Cure, but... their music is just Rock. Even if it's admittedly inventive and idiosyncratic Rock, it's emotionally and structurally quite limited compared to, for example, free jazz and other improvised musics.
Also 'Closer' seems to suffer from the dated and superfluous effects on some songs (Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook have stated on numerous occasions that they dislike the production).
