Bands with a shitty attitude.
I went to see Wavves last night. It was weird. I really like his/their songs but their onstage attitude really put me off.
They pulled in a decent sized crowd for Cardiff which is fairly rare here, especially for a band who've not really released anything over here. People nodded along to the music and clapped and went "woo" and all the usual behaviour, but then the band kept making comments like "you people are boring" and "I think everyone here's sisters just died or something". I'm not really looking for a "we love you Springfield" moment or anything, but I do think it's pretty rich to chastise an audience who've come out to watch you on a cold Wednesday night and paid a 5er for the privilege. It's not as though they even gave us a chance to warm to them, it was pretty much from the first song onwards.
I usually like buying merch at gigs too because it's nice to think that maybe you buying a CD or a t-shirt means that the band might be able to buy a nicer brand of service-station sandwich on the way to their next show, but I just thought "fuck 'em" really. Rather my local record shop get their share of my money.
My friend pointed out that it seems a bit contrary to the whole DIY/all-inclusive thing they seem to be a part of.
Also, reading your own reviews on Pitchfork in front of a crowd of people - pretty lame?
