our band could be your life live weekender
I've been putting on twice yearly alternative cover nights at The Windmill in Brixton, well, I've done two last year, and they have both gone down great. Top performances from some of the best small alternative bands in the UK, playing a split set between their own songs, and their selections by classic alternative bands - basically all the great ones from the early/mid 90s.
Someone suggested for the next one doing a night featuring the bands from the book Our Band Could Be Your Life, and I've been giving it a bit of thought, but if I was gonna do it, I'd want to do it properly, and have all 13 bands. This is simply too many, even for an all dayer. So I was thinking of doing a two day weekend.
But the thing is, would it work?
Would I be able to find bands to do a good job of all the bands?
Would people be genuinely interested in actually coming to the show (most likely at The Windmill in Brixton on a Saturday and Sunday in summer sometime)?
Does anyone have any suggestions of who they would like to see do who? (NB. bands would have to be small enough to play in a 150 capacity venue, and be willing to play for an unguaranteed split of the door takings)
We'd need the following :
Black Flag
Minor Threat
Minutemen
Mission Of Burma
Big Black
Husker Du
The Replacements
Sonic Youth
Dinosaur Jr
Beat Happening
Fugazi
Butthole Surfers
Mudhoney
And I was thinking if we were doing two days, we could add three more bands featured in the book (but not attributed a chapter) to make it 8 each day. And I was thinking ...
REM (81-87 era)
Meat Puppets
Rites Of Spring
Though feel free to make a case for other bands, and I might stretch it to 9 a day.
I think, just because I can, my band 4 or 5 Magicians would play both days, and be REM on one, and Dinosaur Jr on the other.
Would be good to hear the thoughts of anyone who might be interested in coming!
