When Led Zeppelin answered back to punk...
with 'Wearing and Tearing'.
This is a bit odd, isn't it?
According to Plant, they were responding to the 'we hate Led Zep' ethos of punk.
First of all, why did they bother? Punks reckoned they were taking rocknroll back to its roots and that Led Zep were too elaborate and solo-ish for them. But Led Zep were taking blues back to its roots, particularly with the first record.
Also by 1980, when they did the song, punk was fast on its way out. It had lasted properly for what? 3 years? Led Zep's popularity was as big as ever after ten years. They should have realised how miles more important they were than this flash in the pan comprised of bored teenagers - and the fact they were all going to grow into lawyers and teachers and bank managers eventually.
Secondly, GOD, how awful is it?
